I enjoyed my time with Double Dragon 4, it looks, sounds and plays exactly how I remember it back when I was a kid. The addition of new modes, being able to customize the controls and fun local multiplayer will make this one I most certainly will break out when friends are over. I mean how often do you get the chance to show somebody a green version of Abobo getting tornado kicked.

There's certainly nothing wrong with celebrating the past and polishing up classic game concepts for modern consumption, but Double Dragon 4 is a prime example of how not to do a revival - which is ironic when you consider that the WayForward-made Double Dragon Neon did a much better job back in 2012. The use of NES-style graphics isn't a negative in itself, but too little has been done to refine and improve gameplay which, even back in the late '80s, was showing its age against a new breed of slicker and more enjoyable examples of the genre. The co-op focus of the Switch and its Joy-Con controllers does at least mean it's easy to rope in another player for a trip down memory lane, but this is nonetheless a crushing disappointment given the incredible potential of the franchise, and should only be purchased by diehard Billy and Jimmy fans.

Double Dragon IV is nostalgia for nostalgia's sake, and nobody should be happy about that. [Issue #30 – November/December 2017, p. 20]

What makes that great however, is you get to replay it as any of the characters (including bosses, enemies) through the game again. There are several game modes to it.

Difficulty aside, one of the better DD games. Lots of great moves, so the combat is better than ever. Some of the fights are challenging, but you get several continues and can restart at last level beat. Still, very glad I purchased it and incredibly cheap for what you get.

It has multiple buttons so all the different moves are now featured with a single button press. The flow of the game is great and makes you want to keep going even if your time is up in real life. Excellent if a fan of the original DD, and much better than that farce that popped up on Steam a year or so ago. Expand

It's tough to enjoy a game that has so much wasted potential. Many modern-retro games manage to capture the look and feel of 8-bit and 16-bit-era games while adding modern conveniences and game design. DD4, however, comes across as little more than a ROM-hack of the original Double Dragon games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Arc System Works did get one thing right -- they captured the repetitive and sometimes frustrating gameplay that makes the original trilogy of DD games feel so outdated today. Expand

Double Dragon IV seems like a rushed project, quickly put together just to get it out to fans because of the game's 30th year anniversary. TheDouble Dragon IV seems like a rushed project, quickly put together just to get it out to fans because of the game's 30th year anniversary. The game has a wide variety of moves the player can use against enemies from start to finish, but it is missing some iconic techniques DD fans will notice. Still, the variety of abilities available is nice, along with the various attacks unique to each enemy.
The worst part of the game is its story. Nothing of note takes place in between levels after Marion is kidnapped at the start. Each cut scene to the next stage is nothing more than a new character/enemy introduced at the end of the level, beat up, telling Jimmy/Billy where to travel next with the same reasoning, "If you want to find out where to go, go here." That sums up the plot.
Overall, the game has a lot of potential, but its creators didn't spend enough time on details which could have made DD IV the best game in the series. However, die hard fans will enjoy DD IV.
