Disney Illusion Island is quite possibly one of the best Disney games about Mickey and Friends made to date. The world of Monoth is such a joy to explore and is made fantastically to feel like a modern Metroidvania platformer.

With credits behind me, I’m excited to discover more of Monoth’s secrets and collectibles I haven’t yet found, and I’m especially thrilled to play more with my 7-year-old nephew. Illusion Island doesn’t overhaul the platformer genre, or the Metroidvania formula for that matter, but its distinctive no-combat focus on simply moving through Monoth keeps the trip amusing, brisk, and gratifying. I would have liked more challenge; this is a simple adventure that might not capture the interest of platformer enthusiasts with little to no preoccupation with Disney. But when met on its own terms, it’s hard to deny Illusion Island is a jubilant love letter to these characters and platforming.

Disney Illusion Island is a marvelous action/platformer with its fair share of Metroidvania elements set in a Disney-themed world. While this is not a combat-rich experience, the game world is a positive surprise on account of its design and size, as well as the way entirely different parts link together, not to mention its immense wealth of collectionable objects that almost make a small museum of their own. Its cut scenes, delightfully animated, are perhaps a bit too long, but Disney Illusion Island easily becomes a very reliable companion for fans of 2D platformers on the Nintendo Switch who want something that just keeps growing.

Disney Illusion Island is a competent metroidvania with tons of collectibles for family and kids to look for.

Disney Illusion Island is both enjoyable and entertaining, but just as the action in the game zips by with slick efficiency, so too is your memory of the time with it going to be breezy. If you’re able to use it as a way to bond with family or friends, then it’s going to have much more value than as a single-player experience. For those playing solo, expect plenty of charm, but given that it has been developed so that the youngest of children can enjoy it, there just isn’t much substance to it.

Disney Illusion Island is a charming all-ages platformer that acts as a breezy introduction to the Metroidvania genre.

With the sweetness and delight associated with Disney absent, this new platform game is a strangely cynical waste of potential.

Great metroidvania based strictly on platforming. Impressive amount of world-building and cutscenes, you will easily sink for like 10 hours to collect all the items in the game. Runs fabulously on Switch, with a minor hiccups in some of more intense boss battles, but nothing game-breaking.
This is probably the best metroidvania to start your adventure with the genre (beside Yoku's Island Express).

Looks amazing, thanks to excellent animations and impressive attention to detail; A charming, easy-to-pick up adventure; Solid level design and fun collectibles encourage exploration; Platforming can be a lot of fun, especially when stringing multiple maneuvers together; Witty and well-written; Excellently animated cutscenes.

    Bad-
Lacks the complexity you might expect from most Metroidvanias; Total lack of combat is a bit disappointing; Uneven boss fights.

    Thoughts-
If those are the sort of expectations you’re going into Disney Illusion Island with, there’s almost no way you’re not going to have a good time on at least some level. It’s a Metroidvania platformer, yes, but it’s much more easygoing and relaxed than the sort of games you’d ordinarily associate that category of games with. It’s bursting with charm, whimsy, and personality, and delivers consistently fun platforming. Even if it never really delivers something on a gameplay level that you’ll be thinking about days after you’ve wrapped up its 6-8 hour adventure, as a whole, it’s an easy game to recommend to all players, regardless of skill level or familiarity with the genre.

There might be some more difficult sections later in the game, but they come from imprecise controls due to the elaborate animations, which are at least nice to watch.
This game might be great for very young children. Me on the other hand got bored rather quickly, getting to the end felt like a chore. If there wasn't its nice presentation I would have given it a lower score.
