One of the most boring and tedious games I've ever had the misfortune to play, the game is 80% scripts and dialogue, and not exactly a entertaining dialogue.
The characters are simply poorly written, and while the RPG system has potential, it's completely wasted.

Gameplay is very shallow and simple, the RPG aspect could have been explored in a better way.
It's a graphic novel disguised as a game, so there's a lot of reading to do between the few playable moments, and in my personal opinion, the story could be better.

The visual novel is good, but it's not only a visual novel, and that's why I liked this game. There is some exploration too and a lot of opportunities to battle. (Even if more event battles would be appreciated, but it's useful to battle to gain xp) (By the way, we can choose the battle's difficulty and I appreciated because at the end event battle was more frustrated, so thanks for the easy mode)

I have finished the first story in 40 hours, and there is the new game + and other ends to do again, so the game is rather long to beat.

Things to know : affinity is important to evolve your monsters, and use your phone.

Thanks Hyde et Bandai for this game, an other visual novel with Digimon would be a good news!
I played in French and the french translation is good. It was my first Digimon game, and I had no problem no knowing with licence.

Would be a solid 10 if the displayed percentage chance was correct. I mean, not mentioning the 'Be my friend' chance which is not even half the displayed, missing two 80%, one 66% and one 62% hits in a row is ridiculous (literally 0.008448% chance of happening).

Digimon Survive is a good example of a franchise growing with its audience, succeeding at taking the character archetypes and dynamics present in the original Adventure anime and approaching them in a more serious, mature, and at times horrifying way. I'm in the minority of preferring the visual novel aspects over the tactical RPG features, favoring both the storytelling and world-building to the fight sequences; 98% of gameplay really does feel like stepping into an anime, which isn't a bad thing. The world is immersive and proves accessible to those unfamiliar with Digimon while still being unique to keep established fans engaged, while the characters feel complex and wholly realistic (though, due to cultural differences, I can understand how certain ones might seem otherwise to Western audiences). I hope that future installments in the Digimon franchise continue to utilize the ideas introduced in this game. Expand

When the game decided to actually let you play the tactical part of it, you were just given a barebones experience with no real meat to it. It felt like a chore for me to just rush to the end of the game just to say I beat it. And I genuinely hate games that want you to play it more than once to get the real ending. I honestly just don't think this game was made for me, I am happy for everyone who did enjoy it, I just couldn't. Expand

The visual novel art graphics of Survive is stunning with a memorable cast of characters. The karma system that plays into the VN which directly impacts the evolution your digimon takes is interesting and has potential in future games. The story is dark and is clearly meant for fans like myself who grew up watching Digimon adventure in the mornings before school. In terms of tactical gameplay - it is pretty underwhelming. The animations are slow and have a low frame-rate which makes it feel extremely sluggish. If they had the level of butter-smooth, fast gameplay like Disgaea, this would resolve a majority of the game's problems. Survive is a decent entry in the Digimon series but leaves much to be desired. Expand

A great narrative driven game that genuinely makes you feel for the characters involved. The only changes I would have made would have been more digimon/digivolution lines and heavier and wider consequences on the choices that you make across the whole story.

For me, this is the best visual novel I've ever played (and I've played a lot). Cool plot, good dialogues, interesting narrative, cool storytelling, intriguing plot twists and very interesting ideas for the digimon franchise. And the fights. The gameplay is really cool for a TRPG. Very deep and interesting fights. 10 out of 10.

5/10 if you don't care about Digimon, 7/10 if you do. A lot of folks focus on the idea that somehow this game is great as long as you recognize that it's a visual novel, but that's simply not the case. Not to say it's bad either, it's just a very middle of the road title. In all honesty, the story and characters are enjoyable, which is obviously a big plus for this sort of game. The5/10 if you don't care about Digimon, 7/10 if you do. The presentation is also very easy on the eyes, with expertly drawn artwork, a mild amount of animations, and great looking Digimon rigs in battle. Some people may see the number of available Digimon and be disappointed when comparing to games with larger rosters, but the scope and progression of the game really make that a non-issue, the number of Digimon units you can recruit and evolve feels just right. However, where the game begins to lose points is in the gameplay itself, both the visual novel and tactics gameplay. Starting with the battles, there is absolutely nothing new brought to the table here. If you've played a strategy game on the PS1, then you know exactly what you are getting into. Maps are big but units don't always have movement options to account for that, so you can end up sending 4-5 turns just trying to reach an opponent, or more if said opponent is programmed to just run to the far corner of the map. It's pretty uninteresting overall, especially when playing on lower difficulty levels. I hear some people say that auto-battle makes that a non-issue, but if the preferred way to play a game is to not play it at all, then there is likely something wrong here. Similar to games like Fire Emblem, you can attempt to recruit opponents depending on the battle type, though this process is very tedious, and begs you to just use a guide. Whether you have the chance to recruit depends on whether you guess the right answers to 3 questions, with the mediocre translation making your responses nonsensical at times (a running theme in the game). Not that it matters, as there is absolutely nothing to indicate what the correct answer should be, it's a complete guess if this is your first time hearing that enemy give that question. Even if you do get every answer right, you can still lose out on recruiting simply because you only have a percentage chance to be successful, depending your character's current alignment, so some Digimon will always just be more difficult to get depending on the route you are attempting to take.

Battles of course are only a third of the equation, possibly less depending on how you play. The game is first and foremost a visual novel and it really likes to draw that out. The scenarios exist largely to waste your time, as it can take a significant amount of time for anything meaningful to happen. Characters waste time repeating information constantly, and not just single sentences. A perfect example is chapter 4, where the exact same 5-minute situation plays out at least 3 times, with no progression of any kind, followed by the most drop-dead uninteresting exploration I've ever experienced. It's clear they were really trying to include gameplay elements for the sake of simply including gameplay elements, but these portions of the game would have been MORE interesting without needless player interaction. Meanwhile for cases where player choice does matter, the localization is once again very hit and miss, making it sometimes difficult to choose an answer you would actually agree with. The free-time segments are probably where the visual novel aspect shines, as despite the confusing translation, you generally do end up at least getting to know the characters better.

All of these complaints are mostly harmless, but they do add up to make an experience that isn't by any means new or interesting. There are much better visual novels, there are much better tactics games, go play those instead if you haven't. If you really like Digimon (which I do), then you may at least find value in this being an enjoyable Digimon narrative.

The story is very good, but it is so long cause it have a lot of filler, it could be 15 hours instead of 30 whitout all the filler, and it would be more enjoyable.

The combat system is horrible, but there is barely 20 combats in whole game, so its not a big problem, and whit x3 speed the combat its not that slow at least. Edit: the other 2 routes are so boring, 90% its the same, true

Each character has their own story, but only by playing all the endings will you understand all of them. Playing through the entire story multiple times was quite exhausting despite being able to skip most dialogues from 2nd run onwards.

Gameplay is 7.5/10. I love playing tactical strategy games like this, but despite the x3 speed, it still felt a bit slow, and took up quite a bit of my time in the subsequent runs.

The number of digimon in this game is also considered quite little, really wish there's a bigger variety of digimon we can recruit, but the MCs' unique digivolutions helped carry it, so I give it a 7.5/10.

All in all, I still enjoyed this game A LOT. Some of the dark moments were really dark, and that's what I love best. The concept used is also different from the other games I've played, so I felt it's very unique, fun, and playing through all the endings covered my questions in the game.

If you're someone who love Digimon + Visual Novel + GREAT Story, definitely try this out. It's definitely worth the money!

One of the best turn based strategy games. Digimon games become better every year, cause they mature like their audience. This game is a dark nouvelle with story which changes depending on your choices, which gives it great replaybility. 10/10

There are some genuinely unsettling moments too. The tactics battles are definitely second to the narrative, but they're still really fun. And abundant once you get past the introduction section. Between collecting mons and equipment and managing evolutions you can really create some interesting builds.

The cons are, yes, it drags sometimes especially at the beginning when you're meeting the squad. But once the plot gets going the quieter Persona chats with everyone moments are well paced. I've also spotted a typo or two which is a shame, but the rest of it is such a well polished package that I'm fine to overlook them. Overall. I would definitely recommend it if you're into this really specific blend of genres. I know the visual novel thing isn't for everyone but it's my cup of tea. My favorite Digimon game so far.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Darker and more real approach to the Digimon franchise than ever before. I had never played a visual novel before, however after hearing that certain conversation points can influence characters and their potential risk of death I was captivated by “what if I chose this instead”. The morality system makes up for the limited tactical gameplay elements and encourages you to alt for different routes through the next play through. I finished my first play through in 15 hours with 2 deaths and none of the side characters partner Digimon hitting their mega forms, a bit of a cop out but encourages you to expand on collecting ally’s throughout your journey. This game has a lot of potential and I encourage others to give it a chance after the first chapter. It’s a deep story with a lot of twists and shocking turns. Expand

However, the overall BGM felt weak as the dubbing decreased compared to the beginning, and the total number of Digimon, which can be said to be the main, was also disappointing.
This part was regrettable because there were times when they intentionally hit to increase the game time.
I didn't know this game would be ruined because the release was postponed several times.
But it was much more fun when I actually tried it.

The developers are so cheap and lazy, they couldn't even be bothered to make the anime in the start longer than five minutes. So they turned the rest of the cutscenes into a PowerPoint presentation, in a pathetic attempt at keeping the budget low for this game. The story is trash. The very little combat in this game is boring and repetitive. The graphics are a joke. It literally looks like a GameCube game during combat. The physics are beyond horrible.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, this game will go back to the shelf and collect dust. Charging $60 for a game with no replay value is a cashgrab. And the greedy developers had the audacity to charge $60 for a PowerPoint presentation. Not even EA or Take-Two would be greedy enough to sell $60 PowerPoint presentations. To make matters worse, these cheapskate developers were too stingy to pay for English voice actors and still had the nerve to slap a $60 price tag on this "game". Not to mention that it doesn't even have the AAA quality to justify the $60 price tag. This outrageous greed infuriates me. I don't recommend this poor excuse of a game at all.

The SRPG aspect is not without flaws - it's too easy to become overleveled through free battles, "defeat this digimon" can be a bit easy, and a wider selection of digimon or a multiplayer mode would have been nice. But it's still challenging, thoughtful gameplay that's far from just being tacked on, and more than once I had to revise my strategy and try a battle multiple times. Digimon hasn't had a SRPG since the Wonderswan era and it left me hungry for more.

This game was a very pleasant surprise. It does take its time to get started, and it does prioritize visual novel/storytelling elements far beyond the TRPG elements.

However, when Digimon Survive is playing to its strengths: Dark character driven storytelling, where classic anime adventure stories play out with real and sometimes brutal stakes, it is a joy to play through.

Things I would love to have fixed/amended:

-The Cursors for exploring seems a bit slow, some quality of life adjustments would be awesome!
-The assets for the talk sprites seem to.. fade separately instead of all at once? you will see some of the characters bald when they switch poses or leave the conversation.

I love this game in general! I was a bit surprise that it was a visual novel, but the story in itself is great as a grim vision of what the Digiworld has to offer. My main point against is the fact that some of those characters are difficult to root for as they became excessively defeatist and whiny to a point where if you can save them, you begin to wonder if you want to.

Not only was the dialogue not immersive at many points in the story, but the exploration options and constant re-using of the same scenes (Looking at you red lilly woods and waterways) did not help it's case. I did know it was going to be heavier on the dialogue. However, I wish they would've drew a bit more from some other story-driven games such as Disco Elysium which showed greater depth of penmanship as well as a more lushish environment. I'm about half way through, so I'm going to finish it and give it a chance. I think for how high my expectations were for this game - it definitely fell flat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To begin with I want to preface this review with the following statement. Those of you that have review bombed this game because of it's visual novel elements I am truly perplexed. It is perfectly acceptable to not enjoy VN games or desire a greater level of gameplay from games that is your preference. However, it is dishonest and reprehensible to review bomb a game because you did not do enough research into the product you are buying. With that all said and done the actual review.

Digimon survive is a phenomenal Digimon game. The developers clearly understand the appeal of Digimon and this story is heavily evocative of the anime Digimon Adventures. I can also say with certainty that these developers take full advantage of the fact that this is a Digimon game. Interesting themes are explored here most notably the bond between Digimon and people and how a lack of trust or a negative relationship can have severe repercussions on the individual and their partner.

The tactical RPG gameplay whilst basic is effective and there is just enough spice (Digivolution SP requirements and type matchup's) to keep things interesting. Whilst the tactical RPG gameplay is engaging it is also very easy. This can be alleviated somewhat by increasing the battle difficulty. All in all you will love Digimon survive if you are a Digimon fan who enjoys an engaging story, well written characters and a tense foreboding atmosphere.

    TLDR

    Pros
    Well written story and characters.

Satisfying if basic Tactical RPG gameplay.

Good voicework and a fair amount of the game is voice acted.

NG+ carriers over your Digimon levels, recruited Digimon, unlocked Digivolutions and items making subsequent playthroughs much easier.

Skip dialogue and auto dialogue options (Skip dialogue gets turned off when encountering dialogue that has not been viewed before).

    Cons
Numerous typos (not uncommon for VN games).

    Battles are too easy.

    Neutrals(?)
If you do not like VN you will not enjoy this game.

Characters will do some fairly awful things during your first playthrough (This can be prevented in subsequent playthroughs).

    (Gameplay Spoilers) Helpful Tips
Digivolutions are tied to affinity with characters (So raise affinity at every available opportunity).

When presented with multiple options for giving answers to characters during free time and explorations save and rest until you get the answer that raises their affinity).

Absolutely amazing story and plenty of tactical RPG battle fun to be had. The game is not perfect, could use with a few QoL and UX updates, but overall it is a fantastic game.

as a digimon fan since the 90s. and I've played all the games. thisbgame is the worst. what a waste. too much dialogue. no free motion that we can control. the battles r lame slow and boring. the story takes way too long. 4 years for this trash. 4 years u could've made a remake ofdigimon world 2 and 3 . that would have been the best . what a waste of time

I've been caught off guard by what my choices have led to more than once, and it reminds me of the thrill of those Goosebumps choose your scare books from when I was a kid. There is only one large flaw and two small ones:

    Large
    1) that the sprites of the digimon (especially champions ultimates etc) just don't do justice to how awesome and epic you would imagine these digimon look, and they end up looking like cheap mobile game characters in battle.

    Small
    1) Cheap exposition after certain crucial decisions such as "if only I had done something different, would something different have occurred. I can't help but feel there might have been another way" which just serves as a cheap setup to know you can't get a perfect ending on your first playthrough, which is typical of these branching strategy games.

    2) The visual cursor is kind of clunky, so you're better off using the left and right triggers than the joystick, to investigate in settings.

In sum, It's a great buy IF you are going to enjoy the genre, which involves lots of reading and text. The story is genuinely engaging and creepy af, and worth the ride.

Against all odds and its troubled development, Digimon Survive is a breath of fresh air in the franchise. Heavily inspired by the Shin Megami Tensei approach to tell new stories with existing core mythology. For fans of dark visual novels a la Death Mark, of tactical jRPGs, and again of SMT, Persona and Devil Survivor (especially the latter). I would dare say, some people with no prior knowledge of Digimon might even enjoy it more. Survive has hiccups but the attention and dedication is all there and more. The translation has few bugs to be squished in update patches, but the few liberties it takes are to make a text heavy game flow easier. The writing stays true to the Digimon style even through it finally gathers up the courage to explore darker themes - something Digimon writers have always been forbidden to do against their own wishes. This game has been precious to its producers and it will be as precious to many players in years to come despite the underdog treatment even its own publisher gave it. I stayed away from Metacritic for years, but couldn't hold back from such injustice as the review bombing of this title. Expand

Best Story in the Series if you are a fan of the 1999 Adventure Plot line and tropes you will love this. An interesting take on a digimon story. It feels reminiscent of some of the anime and while not presented in a style of gameplay everyone might enjoy, it’s definitely worth a look.

A game that has been well worth the wait! It's a much darker story than any other Digimon game. Very interesting mix of genres :) I recommend people to give this a go if they've never played a game with VN elements.

True to the original roots of the Digimon anime with a compelling story and very likable characters. Some parts of the game are a bit drawn out and repetitive but otherwise, an excellent visual novel with battle elements!

The game makes no sense to be played if you dont like reading and a game based on history and if the only thing that you like about digimon is being able to raise a digimon and have a great amount of them, in this game your actions will define the ending you get being the first time you play impossible to get the perfect ending, what you choose to do and say will make someone die or live for another day and whether you choose to be aggressive, calm or logical you digimon will evolve accordingly. I think it any digimon fan should be able to enjoy the game but still as i said this is a special game that is to be played only by people that can withstand lots of text and slow gameplay where you should make yourself up the story and enjoy it to be rewarded with a great story and experience that you can replay on game plus to get different endings and explore different choices and evolutions.

Starting from the base, the game is 70% visual novel and 30% tactical RPG. The game is sold as VN and this has been said since day one. The game is fantastic, visually, the music, the characters and their evolution in history. The plots that are handled in each route and the replayability of the title thanks to this. It is a very good game in absolutely everything it sets out to do. It's not perfect, because nothing ever is. But the care that this is to the liking of the public to which it is directed (Fans of Digimon, Tactical RPGs and VN) is noticeable.,
I can not recommend this game more. You have to play it.
And yes, the price in my opinion is excessive. But aside from that, Survive has one of the best Digimon stories and there's no reason why you should miss it.

A really good take on the Digimon story! I've super enjoyed the darker and more mature storyline a ton! The only reason that I'm giving it a 9 is that there are several translation errors in the game that were glaringly obvious to my eyes, but other than that it's a very very fun story to experience!

Great graphic novel with a dash of strategic RPG elements, grow up you man children with nothing better to do then **** on other peoples’ attempt to entertain you.

Digimon Survive should have a lot of depth, with partner Digimon evolving and devolving, free-roaming Digimon to recruit, and a vibrant cast of characters who, on the surface, are generally enjoyable. Looking at the game from afar, it truly captures a feeling of desolation and nostalgia. But it comes up just short when it comes to gameplay and story—the two most important things for an SRPG and visual novel hybrid. A “Truthful” path awaits as a New Game+ option, but the gameplay shortcomings, unfortunately, aren’t alleviated with repeat playthroughs. Digimon Survive‘s charms aren’t fleeting by any means, but neither are its disappointments.

With its mature themes, Digimon Survive provides a refreshing take on the franchise and fits into the series' canon in a really cool way. I hope we get more Digimon games exploring new directions like this! [Issue #63 – January/February 2023, p. 73]

I love visual novels, and I love strategy games. For a subsection of gamers, Digimon Survive will hit the perfect sweet spot between both of those. It’s got everything you’d expect from a digestible entry with a focus on presentation. However, I couldn’t help but feel that the game is just shy of greatness. Make no mistake, Digimon Survive is good. However, despite its best efforts, I found that the pacing drags and the combat mechanics are unremarkable. If you have enough patience to engage with its story and gameplay, the positives will far outweigh the negatives. It’s flawed, but the heart shines through and it goes down easy thanks to being one of the best-looking anime-style games released in years. Are there better SRPGs to play right now? Sure, but none offer Digimon’s unique brand of SRPG and I think it hits more than it misses.
