Against all odds and its troubled development, Digimon Survive is a breath of fresh air in the franchise. Heavily inspired by the Shin Megami Tensei approach to tell new stories with existing core mythology. For fans of dark visual novels a la Death Mark, of tactical jRPGs, and again of SMT, Persona and Devil Survivor (especially the latter). I would dare say, some people with no prior knowledge of Digimon might even enjoy it more. Survive has hiccups but the attention and dedication is all there and more. The translation has few bugs to be squished in update patches, but the few liberties it takes are to make a text heavy game flow easier. The writing stays true to the Digimon style even through it finally gathers up the courage to explore darker themes - something Digimon writers have always been forbidden to do against their own wishes. This game has been precious to its producers and it will be as precious to many players in years to come despite the underdog treatment even its own publisher gave it. I stayed away from Metacritic for years, but couldn't hold back from such injustice as the review bombing of this title. Expand

To be honest I would like some more variety considering the range of digimon you can recuit and use, but the main companion's evolution path (and mechanic) gives this game a "real" feel, considering the simultaneous growth of both Digimon and Partner. All in all an amazing experience so far, I really doubt it gets worse from here. Hope you guys enjoy the game as much as I do.

There are so many route that you can take that can alter the story. Loved it 10/10. Took me 6 days/ morning and nights to finish it. Bought it released say, finished it Wednesday night. The SRPG aspect is not without flaws - it's too easy to become overleveled through free battles, "defeat this digimon" can be a bit easy, and a wider selection of digimon or a multiplayer mode would have been nice. But it's still challenging, thoughtful gameplay that's far from just being tacked on, and more than once I had to revise my strategy and try a battle multiple times. Digimon hasn't had a SRPG since the Wonderswan era and it left me hungry for more.

I had never played a visual novel before, however after hearing that certain conversation points can influence characters and their potential risk of death I was captivated by “what if I chose this instead”. The morality system makes up for the limited tactical gameplay elements and encourages you to alt for different routes through the next play through. I finished my first play through in 15 hours with 2 deaths and none of the side characters partner Digimon hitting their mega forms, a bit of a cop out but encourages you to expand on collecting ally’s throughout your journey. This game has a lot of potential and I encourage others to give it a chance after the first chapter. It’s a deep story with a lot of twists and shocking turns. Expand

The characters are well developed and operate outside of the tropes they inhabit at the beginning. Great art in both portions of the game, a great soundtrack that knows it's in a horror game. There are some genuinely unsettling moments too. The tactics battles are definitely second to the narrative, but they're still really fun. And abundant once you get past the introduction section. Between collecting mons and equipment and managing evolutions you can really create some interesting builds.

The cons are, yes, it drags sometimes especially at the beginning when you're meeting the squad. But once the plot gets going the quieter Persona chats with everyone moments are well paced. I've also spotted a typo or two which is a shame, but the rest of it is such a well polished package that I'm fine to overlook them. Overall. I would definitely recommend it if you're into this really specific blend of genres. I know the visual novel thing isn't for everyone but it's my cup of tea. My favorite Digimon game so far.

I'm in the minority of preferring the visual novel aspects over the tactical RPG features, favoring both the storytelling and world-building to the fight sequences; 98% of gameplay really does feel like stepping into an anime, which isn't a bad thing. The world is immersive and proves accessible to those unfamiliar with Digimon while still being unique to keep established fans engaged, while the characters feel complex and wholly realistic (though, due to cultural differences, I can understand how certain ones might seem otherwise to Western audiences). I hope that future installments in the Digimon franchise continue to utilize the ideas introduced in this game. Expand

The biggest problem to this game is that you pay $60 for a game where there isn't much actual gaming, you get to see a lot of story and make decisions. The sound design also leaves a bit left to be desired.

However, the actual story is great and it is full of twists, turns and darkness. The art is great and satisfies you from an aesthetic stand point. I thoroughly enjoy playing it despite its drawbacks.

The actual battling, which is a turn based grid system, is fine. It is done better in other games, but it suits its purpose for the game.

Amazing game. Any negative reviews are from those who didn't know what they were purchasing. This is a visual novel game with strategic battle elements. The game is beautifully done. The music, characters, world and tone are all varied and really engaging. The length of the game, the multiple routes, and the collecting and using of various digimon is already enough for the $60 price point. Factor in a wonderful story full of ups and downs, smiles and tears and an overarching mystery that sets a dismal but optimistic tone throughout the story.

This game is a 100% buy if you know what to expect. Expect lots of dialogue. Expect your choices to matter and the story to matter a lot. You get to battle often but it's not a combatic game first off. This game's focus is on the story, the dialogue, friendship, bonds, and player choice. If you can get into that, I highly recommend this game. It has everything you'd expect in a VN. The voice acting is lovely, the immersive writing is great and engaging and the characters are interesting, even while some may be better than others.

The battle aspects are fun and easy to play with. Boss battles are far more fun than other basic battles but even those can be fun with befriending new digimon and grinding. They're a great break from the story elements that can definitely be heavy on your brain, so go do some free battles to give yourself a break here and there as the story doesn't really take days off from being pretty heavy emotionally.

It pains me to see the negative reviews because you can tell the game has been crafted with love and care. The negative reviews have a lot in common in that they're all from those who didn't know what the game was before really purchasing it. Please do your research on the game first -- if you're interested in the game, it'll hit all your expectations. If you want to play an RPG, check out Cyber Sleuth.

PS -- Knocking a point off for one specific character and his treatment of a special, precious bean. It honestly infuriated me (sign of good writing in a good game, in fairness). I wish I could have done more in the game to avoid a certain event happening. I believe you can in new game+ but it is still infuriating I had to sit idle and watch as this character did these things to the precious bean. It ruined my mood for many hours lol. If it were real life, that guy would have had issues with me far before this event. I didn't like how that aspect was constantly ignored without worry from the cast.

Now, onto the review! It's different from other Digimon games, and I've found I love it! I'm currently at chapter 10 in the game, and have gotten really invested in it. It's got the dark feeling of Tamers and is certainly geared towards adults, as you can actually get characters killed in this game. The characters are charming for the most part (except for one character everyone has collectively decided to hate, and for good reason), and the story is pretty good! The karma system is predicable after a while, but that's great if you're trying to go for a certain ending or a certain branch in Agumon's growth (you can mix up vaccine, data, and virus just so you know). There is combat in the game, both as free battles (the main way to recruit wild Digimon, and get items, and through the story itself. I highly recommend grinding the free battles for levels, as some fights can get tricky depending on your team's setup. Keep in mind though that combat is only 30% of the game. There's two issues I have with this game.

First is the localization (though this is nothing new with Digimon games, sadly). From chapter 5 and onwards, female Digimon (according to their profiles) are given masculine pronouns. It's not a big issue, but it's a bit annoying. Secondly, the poor marketing. I got a physical copy here in the USA, and didn't get a preorder code for the special DLC Guilmon. They should have said which retailers do this, and which don't, and if you needed digital or physical up front. As a result, I'll have to wait for Guilmon to be released later as PAID DLC.

Overall, if you're looking for a game with a story, that feels like an anime, and don't mind reading, and aren't too bummed out on less combat, this is the game for you! If you're looking for a game that's just a mindless button mashing fighter, and has little-to-no story or dialog, this is not the game for you.

Do note that if you're getting the switch version, do NOT play it docked! People are reporting a dip in FPS. Play it handheld instead, and you won't have this problem.

My score is a 9/10. I love this game, but am disappointed that my physical switch game doesn't come with the Guilmon DLC due to their poor marketing involving this. Here's hoping they'll correct their mistake in the future, as so many of us were left confused.

Interesting mix of VN and tactics. If you like these genre’s, you will love this game. The atmosphere and music are top notch and moving. I really enjoyed cyber sleuth and this is just another take on the digimon universe in a new form.
If you enjoy tactics, Digimon and VN story building , play this game.

A really good take on the Digimon story! I've super enjoyed the darker and more mature storyline a ton! The only reason that I'm giving it a 9 is that there are several translation errors in the game that were glaringly obvious to my eyes, but other than that it's a very very fun story to experience!

True to the original roots of the Digimon anime with a compelling story and very likable characters. Some parts of the game are a bit drawn out and repetitive but otherwise, an excellent visual novel with battle elements!

I've been caught off guard by what my choices have led to more than once, and it reminds me of the thrill of those Goosebumps choose your scare books from when I was a kid. There is only one large flaw and two small ones:

    Large
    1) that the sprites of the digimon (especially champions ultimates etc) just don't do justice to how awesome and epic you would imagine these digimon look, and they end up looking like cheap mobile game characters in battle.

    Small
    1) Cheap exposition after certain crucial decisions such as "if only I had done something different, would something different have occurred. I can't help but feel there might have been another way" which just serves as a cheap setup to know you can't get a perfect ending on your first playthrough, which is typical of these branching strategy games.

    2) The visual cursor is kind of clunky, so you're better off using the left and right triggers than the joystick, to investigate in settings.

In sum, It's a great buy IF you are going to enjoy the genre, which involves lots of reading and text. The story is genuinely engaging and creepy af, and worth the ride.

A great change of pace for Digimon games. Cyber Sleuth and World games have been a staple for so long, it's nice to get personally introduced to visual novels with this game. The combat is good, but definitely could be more robust. The game being a visual novel gives them the ability to really give a good story and they do just that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To begin with I want to preface this review with the following statement. Those of you that have review bombed this game because of it's visual novel elements I am truly perplexed. It is perfectly acceptable to not enjoy VN games or desire a greater level of gameplay from games that is your preference. However, it is dishonest and reprehensible to review bomb a game because you did not do enough research into the product you are buying. With that all said and done the actual review.

Digimon survive is a phenomenal Digimon game. The developers clearly understand the appeal of Digimon and this story is heavily evocative of the anime Digimon Adventures. I can also say with certainty that these developers take full advantage of the fact that this is a Digimon game. Interesting themes are explored here most notably the bond between Digimon and people and how a lack of trust or a negative relationship can have severe repercussions on the individual and their partner.

The tactical RPG gameplay whilst basic is effective and there is just enough spice (Digivolution SP requirements and type matchup's) to keep things interesting. Whilst the tactical RPG gameplay is engaging it is also very easy. This can be alleviated somewhat by increasing the battle difficulty. All in all you will love Digimon survive if you are a Digimon fan who enjoys an engaging story, well written characters and a tense foreboding atmosphere.

    TLDR

    Pros
    Well written story and characters.

Satisfying if basic Tactical RPG gameplay.

Good voicework and a fair amount of the game is voice acted.

NG+ carriers over your Digimon levels, recruited Digimon, unlocked Digivolutions and items making subsequent playthroughs much easier.

Skip dialogue and auto dialogue options (Skip dialogue gets turned off when encountering dialogue that has not been viewed before).

    Cons
Numerous typos (not uncommon for VN games).

    Battles are too easy.

    Neutrals(?)
If you do not like VN you will not enjoy this game.

Characters will do some fairly awful things during your first playthrough (This can be prevented in subsequent playthroughs).

    (Gameplay Spoilers) Helpful Tips
Digivolutions are tied to affinity with characters (So raise affinity at every available opportunity).

When presented with multiple options for giving answers to characters during free time and explorations save and rest until you get the answer that raises their affinity).

Things I would love to have fixed/amended:

-The assets for the talk sprites seem to.. fade separately instead of all at once? you will see some of the characters bald when they switch poses or leave the conversation.

This game was a very pleasant surprise. It does take its time to get started, and it does prioritize visual novel/storytelling elements far beyond the TRPG elements.

However, when Digimon Survive is playing to its strengths: Dark character driven storytelling, where classic anime adventure stories play out with real and sometimes brutal stakes, it is a joy to play through.

Each character has their own story, but only by playing all the endings will you understand all of them. Playing through the entire story multiple times was quite exhausting despite being able to skip most dialogues from 2nd run onwards.

Gameplay is 7.5/10. I love playing tactical strategy games like this, but despite the x3 speed, it still felt a bit slow, and took up quite a bit of my time in the subsequent runs.

The number of digimon in this game is also considered quite little, really wish there's a bigger variety of digimon we can recruit, but the MCs' unique digivolutions helped carry it, so I give it a 7.5/10.

All in all, I still enjoyed this game A LOT. Some of the dark moments were really dark, and that's what I love best. The concept used is also different from the other games I've played, so I felt it's very unique, fun, and playing through all the endings covered my questions in the game.

If you're someone who love Digimon + Visual Novel + GREAT Story, definitely try this out. It's definitely worth the money!

The visual novel is good, but it's not only a visual novel, and that's why I liked this game. There is some exploration too and a lot of opportunities to battle. (Even if more event battles would be appreciated, but it's useful to battle to gain xp) (By the way, we can choose the battle's difficulty and I appreciated because at the end event battle was more frustrated, so thanks for the easy mode)

I have finished the first story in 40 hours, and there is the new game + and other ends to do again, so the game is rather long to beat.

Digimon Survive is the first Digimon game in the franchise that is a mix of a graphic novel with light strategy rpg elements in the battle system. This being a graphic novel first so expect a lot of reading. If you don’t like to read for hours avoid this game and don’t like subs.

Gameplay: This game is mostly a click and search for items as well as selecting choices throughout the story.

    Gameplay:
This game is mostly a click and search for items as well as selecting choices throughout the story. There are battles scattered through out or you can choose free battles and keep battling until you are done grinding for levels, items and even recruiting digimon. The battles take place on a grid field that you move your digimon units and attack the enemies. It’s simple but it gets the job done. You can equip items or different skills but it’s either and/or if each as two is the max. I didn’t care about the battles so luckily there is an auto battle option you can use to choose how they auto fight. Using the auto fight, the AI made great choices I only took control when there were important battles as battles can be speed up when on auto. I found the battle speed to be on the slow end.

    Story:
This is were Digimon Survive excels at and this is what Adventure 2020 should have been. You can tell all the effort was put into the story from the world building to the difficult choices you have to make throughout the story. In my opinion it was well written and made me care about the characters even the annoying ones as well as their digital companions. In its core this is Digimon and one of the best story so far as these middle schoolers and upper class men get transported to a mysterious island of unknown origin were they fend of foes, explore the land and grow as a person as they try to survive on this mysterious land. You can see the tribute of Digimon adventure to some extent in the story.

Graphics/sound: I was impressed with the visuals and soundtrack.

Overall, if you don’t mind reading a book and are a fan of Digimon, this is a must play. You won’t regret it. It’s a solid Digimon story experience with a mediocre battle system but the story makes up for it. It’s not perfect but it’s great only thing wrong I see is that their is no English voice over since it’s sub like cybersleuth.

The visual novel art graphics of Survive is stunning with a memorable cast of characters. The karma system that plays into the VN which directly impacts the evolution your digimon takes is interesting and has potential in future games. The story is dark and is clearly meant for fans like myself who grew up watching Digimon adventure in the mornings before school. In terms of tactical gameplay - it is pretty underwhelming. The animations are slow and have a low frame-rate which makes it feel extremely sluggish. If they had the level of butter-smooth, fast gameplay like Disgaea, this would resolve a majority of the game's problems. Survive is a decent entry in the Digimon series but leaves much to be desired. Expand

5/10 if you don't care about Digimon, 7/10 if you do. A lot of folks focus on the idea that somehow this game is great as long as you recognize that it's a visual novel, but that's simply not the case. Not to say it's bad either, it's just a very middle of the road title. In all honesty, the story and characters are enjoyable, which is obviously a big plus for this sort of game. The5/10 if you don't care about Digimon, 7/10 if you do. The presentation is also very easy on the eyes, with expertly drawn artwork, a mild amount of animations, and great looking Digimon rigs in battle. Some people may see the number of available Digimon and be disappointed when comparing to games with larger rosters, but the scope and progression of the game really make that a non-issue, the number of Digimon units you can recruit and evolve feels just right. However, where the game begins to lose points is in the gameplay itself, both the visual novel and tactics gameplay. Starting with the battles, there is absolutely nothing new brought to the table here. If you've played a strategy game on the PS1, then you know exactly what you are getting into. Maps are big but units don't always have movement options to account for that, so you can end up sending 4-5 turns just trying to reach an opponent, or more if said opponent is programmed to just run to the far corner of the map. It's pretty uninteresting overall, especially when playing on lower difficulty levels. I hear some people say that auto-battle makes that a non-issue, but if the preferred way to play a game is to not play it at all, then there is likely something wrong here. Similar to games like Fire Emblem, you can attempt to recruit opponents depending on the battle type, though this process is very tedious, and begs you to just use a guide. Whether you have the chance to recruit depends on whether you guess the right answers to 3 questions, with the mediocre translation making your responses nonsensical at times (a running theme in the game). Not that it matters, as there is absolutely nothing to indicate what the correct answer should be, it's a complete guess if this is your first time hearing that enemy give that question. Even if you do get every answer right, you can still lose out on recruiting simply because you only have a percentage chance to be successful, depending your character's current alignment, so some Digimon will always just be more difficult to get depending on the route you are attempting to take.

Battles of course are only a third of the equation, possibly less depending on how you play. The game is first and foremost a visual novel and it really likes to draw that out. The scenarios exist largely to waste your time, as it can take a significant amount of time for anything meaningful to happen. Characters waste time repeating information constantly, and not just single sentences. A perfect example is chapter 4, where the exact same 5-minute situation plays out at least 3 times, with no progression of any kind, followed by the most drop-dead uninteresting exploration I've ever experienced. It's clear they were really trying to include gameplay elements for the sake of simply including gameplay elements, but these portions of the game would have been MORE interesting without needless player interaction. Meanwhile for cases where player choice does matter, the localization is once again very hit and miss, making it sometimes difficult to choose an answer you would actually agree with. The free-time segments are probably where the visual novel aspect shines, as despite the confusing translation, you generally do end up at least getting to know the characters better.

All of these complaints are mostly harmless, but they do add up to make an experience that isn't by any means new or interesting. There are much better visual novels, there are much better tactics games, go play those instead if you haven't. If you really like Digimon (which I do), then you may at least find value in this being an enjoyable Digimon narrative.

The finish, production values, and technical ambition resemble (no offense) that of an indie. Which is hardly justifiable in a main Digimon game.

Not only was the dialogue not immersive at many points in the story, but the exploration options and constant re-using of the same scenes (Looking at you red lilly woods and waterways) did not help it's case. I did know it was going to be heavier on the dialogue. However, I wish they would've drew a bit more from some other story-driven games such as Disco Elysium which showed greater depth of penmanship as well as a more lushish environment. I'm about half way through, so I'm going to finish it and give it a chance. I think for how high my expectations were for this game - it definitely fell flat.

Always in your 1st game certain characters will die with their digimon and certain characters will live, even if you send them to the battlefield as a sacrifice.
So it seems that the only real decision is to buy this title or not.

Most of the characters have cartoon personalities and do not make decisions that a human would make in reality and it doesn't feel like a mature story at all, but the death scenes can be disturbing for the little so I don't understand what audience it could be directed.

For other part, Takuma doesn't compl as a character or as an avatar, and it's hard to connect with him. There is no female lead character as in the case of Cyber Sleuth or Next Order.

Regarding the story, it is poorly worked and the translations in parts are poorly done.
I feel that 4 years gave them time to think well about the plot, but not respected the basic concept of digimon (digital beings) and treated them as ghosts/spirits.
The twist of the story is not surprising at all, many events are too predictable, which makes the story feel heavy, for taking so long on something obvious.

Regarding the SRPG, it is an interesting proposal but still green, however, it has potential.

The balance between digimon does not exist, and some have a clear preferentialism and others have been very disadvantaged.

The price for what it offers is not correct.

I would say that it greatly influences how you get along with the characters influences whether you like the title or not, so if you do not check the deaths and survivors you can run into an unpleasant disappointment of the title, as I said the deaths are default and unavoidable.
And I mention it because if you dislike both characters that will survive in all the routes, the game becomes torture for completed and can access to NG+...

To make matters worse, these cheapskate developers were too stingy to pay for English voice actors and still had the nerve to slap a $60 price tag on this "game". Not to mention that it doesn't even have the AAA quality to justify the $60 price tag. This outrageous greed infuriates me. I don't recommend this poor excuse of a game at all.

Digimon Survive should have a lot of depth, with partner Digimon evolving and devolving, free-roaming Digimon to recruit, and a vibrant cast of characters who, on the surface, are generally enjoyable. Looking at the game from afar, it truly captures a feeling of desolation and nostalgia. But it comes up just short when it comes to gameplay and story—the two most important things for an SRPG and visual novel hybrid. A “Truthful” path awaits as a New Game+ option, but the gameplay shortcomings, unfortunately, aren’t alleviated with repeat playthroughs. Digimon Survive‘s charms aren’t fleeting by any means, but neither are its disappointments.

I love visual novels, and I love strategy games. For a subsection of gamers, Digimon Survive will hit the perfect sweet spot between both of those. It’s got everything you’d expect from a digestible entry with a focus on presentation. However, I couldn’t help but feel that the game is just shy of greatness. Make no mistake, Digimon Survive is good. However, despite its best efforts, I found that the pacing drags and the combat mechanics are unremarkable. If you have enough patience to engage with its story and gameplay, the positives will far outweigh the negatives. It’s flawed, but the heart shines through and it goes down easy thanks to being one of the best-looking anime-style games released in years. Are there better SRPGs to play right now? Sure, but none offer Digimon’s unique brand of SRPG and I think it hits more than it misses.
