Diablo 2 Resurrected (Alpha) vs Diablo 2 Gameplay Comparison

Diablo II: Resurrected meticulously recreates the classic PC experience. The gameplay is as faithful to the original experience as one could hope for, and while the modern graphics are dazzling, the ability to kick some demon butt still takes precedence. Newcomers may be a bit put off by some dated mechanics, but for fans of dungeon crawlers or those who just want to relive one of the best PC games of all time, Diablo II: Resurrected won’t disappoint.

Diablo 2: Resurrected makes playing Diablo 2 more enjoyable than ever. The visual upgrades are immense, and I still enjoy the tight game design as much as I did 20 years ago. I wish that more quality of life improvements were introduced with this remake/remaster. Just a few more small changes could have rectified some annoyances that stem from it being a 20-year-old game. As it stands, it’s almost too close to the original in all the wrong ways while missing multiplayer options that were removed for no reason.

On the whole Diablo II: Resurrected still has enough of the old magic left in it to be worth playing today, twenty years later. Thankfully, the developers realized that and largely left things untouched. Most of what has been added is optional even if you don’t find it welcome, and beyond that the only troublesome new bits are a few bugs that will hopefully be fixed. The online/offline character business may cause headaches for those who like to play both on the road and with others, but beyond that I have trouble finding many nits to pick with this remaster.

If you’re like me and playing Diablo II: Resurrected with fresh eyes and no pretext to speak of, I give it a strong recommendation. I expect that fans who fell in love with Diablo II the first time around are also going to get quite the thrill out of this enhanced version of a genuine classic.

Diablo II: Resurrected gets enough polish and features to appeal to fans of the original release and to series newcomers. The exploration/combat loop is still fully engaging, with only a few remnants of its age interfering with gameplay on the Switch.

Diablo II Resurrected, for the most part, strikes a perfectly respectable balance between maintaining the look and feel of the original and updating it for a modern audience. It's unambitious, but it doesn't really need to be any more than that — Diablo II was a wonderful game, and all it really needed was a bit of sprucing up at the end of the day. That's been done here, and done mostly well, and the transition to a gamepad is probably is good as it could've been. Still, it feels dated in some ways, and its online/offline character split was a dreadful choice, given how bad the servers have been for it. Still, it is Diablo II, for better and for worse, and if you're like me and have a nostalgic attachment to it, it's probably worth a play.

Diablo II: Resurrected is a great game, but in a genre that has seen drastic growth and evolution ever since. It’s an experience that is certainly worth playing, especially if you understand the context that it was launched and its importance to today’s titles.

Everything else is just a far, FAR better version of D2. Graphics are well made though it annoys me that they tried to alter clothing to be less revealing, prudes. It's great that you can revert to the original graphics though!

I'm having tons of fun with this game on the switch.

I'd give it 10/10 if it supported open-battlenet style multiplayer with my offline characters. Why do I have to chose between having a character that I play when I'm on a trip, and another to play multiplayer with? It's ridiculous. Cross-play would be good to have too.

BUT … sadly the online capability is really not that great. No way to find a lobby. It’s really hard to connect to other players. No real crossplay … you’re stuck to your platform. It would be so awesome if we all could really play together and form a much bigger community to play such an great title.

I don't have the nostalgia factor for this game as I never played this when I was a kid.

    Saying that.

I wish more improvements were made to get this up to speed with modern day standards.

The update to the graphics was nice but this really needed more.

I managed get to the last area and can honestly say my time was mostly filled with frustration over the ridiculously small inventory sizes. Most my time was spent uselessly managing loot and going back and fourth to town to sell.

Also the sheer amount of potion vomit was so lame. I can see why the newer game did away with potions like this in favor of a refreshing potion. Being bombarded by all these potions and junk loot felt ridiculous. That felt like such a massive design flaw keeping the loot system like this and the inventory this tiny but maybe how they artificially made games longer back then.

Just because this was a classic back then, doesn't mean it's good now. Shiny new graphics only can go far.

Playing on the switch was a pain too. Handheld mode is the most uncomfortable as nothing really felt optimized for the small screen size.

Switch is a console I take out on short public trips, people take switch with them when going to bathroom, you can't afford having 30-minute long queues on Switch!

Switch version has awful performance, infinite loading screens, framerate drops over the course of the game, reaching unplayable depths, forcing to restart.
Game crashes most unexpectedly as well.
