Defense Grid 2, then, is a success, albeit not a perfect one: a fun if simple game that scratches the itch it sets out to satisfy.

I was a huge fan of the first game in the series. I happened across it by accident in the Xbox Live Marketplace way, way back in 2010. II was a huge fan of the first game in the series. I happened across it by accident in the Xbox Live Marketplace way, way back in 2010. I spent hours on this unique take on tower defense. Fast forward to 2014, and voila, a sequel arrived, and it did a good job at being a decent sequel. It didn't do too much to change a working formula, and the continued story adds a layer of depth always lacking in games like this. Here we are now in 2019, and so what if it's being brought to the Switch this late in the game. It's very playable, and a great way to introduce people to the world of tower defense if they aren't already familiar with the genre. There's enough towers to give variety, and the leaderboards are enough to add a competitive layer to the game. It would be nice to see some more customization elements in the game, but then again, this is a port of a game released 5 years ago, so you can't expect them to add that many new elements to the game. I'm a fan, and I hope Hidden Path has plans for a third installment that can be released on the Switch at the same time as other consoles & PC. Full Review »
