    I'd love to encourage more developers to leverage 1-bit aesthetics. The high contrast and level of detail that can be worked into the art, using modern technology, makes for a distinctive and highly appealing art direction. However, it's still got to be playable. A fast-paced strategy game that is almost impossible to follow because everything is so tiny on the screen, coupled with high levels of contrast that end up encouraging eye strain, is just not on. Death Crown would be brilliant on PC, where you can see everything that's going on (I imagine). This lazy and ill-conceived port to the Nintendo Switch is almost worthless, sadly.

In terms of visual uniqueness and the cool factor the 1-bit black and white look of Death Crown definitely shakes things up and starts out as being pretty cool. Unfortunately, the honeymoon phase doesn’t last too long due to a small number of issues. The first is simply the scale of everything on the screen on Switch, which makes it pretty well unplayable in handheld mode but fails to take advantage of the space well even on a larger screen. The second is the tendency for your pointer to obscure what’s going on as you move it around. The last is that when you pair the above issues with a pretty brisk pace and it gets to be roughly a visual cacophony of chaos. There can be fun if you don’t mind that, but it’s hard not to reflect on the missteps made in terms of the unique, but not terribly functional, visuals.
