Despite the usual pains of being a Switch port, Crystar finds a new home on this console. Every system of this moody JRPG provides a unique experience that you will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. I’d highly recommend this version to those who have yet to play, but keep in mind that this game is as niche as they come, so it’s best to keep that in mind to know what you’re getting yourself into.

Crystar combines a stunning supernatural setting with simple hack-and-slash fighting to draw you through a complex and profound plot that bounces between realms.

You won't be saving the world but you will be fighting sadness and depression. Crystar’s story is marred by poor gameplay execution that can become repetitive very fast. If you are looking for something different in the JRPG genre then this is a good start, especially with all the Gothic Lolita style.

CRYSTAR is certainly a fascinating video game. Now it arrives on Nintendo Switch, enriching itself with the portable mode.

Crystar is not a particularly brilliant JRPg, but it's a decent one, with a good story and interesting characters. It's a pity, then, that the dungeon design is very bland and the combat system feels boring after ten or so hours.

Crystar is an excellent story wedged between way too much repetitive and meaningless combat inside gorgeous yet long-winded dungeons. The non-stop button mashing fights add no value or depth to the story except for the simple reason to progress. Unfortunately, what initially started with a shocking plot and opening unfolded quickly into a tedious gaming experience.

Crystar is an action RPG with a compelling story, great voice acting, and excellent music. It is let down by mediocre combat and level design. On Nintendo Switch it includes all the DLC right from the get go at a lower asking price than other versions, but it has seen some noticeable visual and performance cutbacks compared to the PS4 version.

This Switch version of the game is decent enough, though it does make some expected concessions in its visuals when compared to the PlayStation 4 original. If you’ve set your mind on playing Crystar, this is a fine enough way to do it. There’s certainly something here to enjoy, with a twisting narrative that keeps on delivering to the bittersweet end. But you’re going to have to deal with some lengthy stretches of truly dull gameplay between those story nuggets, and I can’t really make a strong case that it’s worth it.

Crystar runs really well on the Switch, but is held back by poor combat and level design.

Crystar is a very fun JRPG game I can recommend to about anyone who loves this kind of game. It’s a very solid port of the previous games as well.
