That same day i got home from work, booted up my switch in docked mode and started playing Crosscode, 10 hours went by and i craved more.

The story is well written, the atmosphere of the world is superb. The characters suck you in and you feel involved with all missions. The pixelated graphics is excellent, game play is fun, side missions is interesting and doesn't feel like a chore, upgrade skill tree is interesting .

All in all Crosscode is on par with Zelda Breath of The Wild and the only issue is with lag issues in the Menus and when you enter a busy town. Why this wasn't fixed before release i will never understand.

Well worth playing Crosscode. Well done Radical Fish Games.

Tight platforming and combat, satisfying (if challenging) puzzles, and only a sprinkling of grinding (for the completionists; entirely optional). The story is intriguing, too. Obviously gorgeous with a nostalgic-though strong-score. I'm 19 hours in and hooked.

This game has terrible gameplay mechanics. My right arm began to hurt from how long you have to hold the right stick down, combined with how you have to SLOOOOWLY correct your aim. It helps little that the aiming reticule has two settings: move at the speed of a dead grandmother, or ludicrous speed. There is no third option. This is why slowly was in all caps and dragged out. You have to barely move the joystick hair by hair to correctly aim. And the game absolutely requires *tons* of shots where you have to aim perfectly, and it isn't shy about lining up multiple shots like this in a row. Which must be done quickly. Part of this is due in part to the joycons, but the meat of the issue lies solely with the game itself. It's largest flaw is it tries to do so much with such a limiting interface. The old school look drew me, so I'm not one to bash throwback formats. The platforming is abysmal. I got stuck for hours on one side quest bc I could not figure out how to jump to a platform in a time limit. The answer was that a nearby platform, that looked lower than the destination, and thus useless, was actually on the same height level. This was in a side quest, however, which I could overlook

I cannot say the same about the temples, as they are mandatory. After doing the first one I immediately began dreading the fact there were at minimum four more. I spent hours doing every single side quest available between temple 1 and 2, simply bc I dreaded doing it. I was not wrong to feel so. Recall the issues I mentioned about aiming and the hair/hairless trigger for aiming? Without giving away any solutions, one such puzzle involved shooting through an ice orb to freeze four water pillars which are cut at an angle. Then you must get into position and wait the one second charge up which allows your shots to bounce. The pillars unfreeze if anyone anywhere on the planet breathes.

I'd like to note there's a difficulty setting, for both combat and puzzles, which would increase the time the pillars are frozen. This feels like a cop out via lazy programming; reclassifying bad programming as "challenge". The game goes out of its way to tell you there are difficulty sliders directly from the start. That's a red flag sandwich. It's by default set to max, and most games aren't going to start you off on expert. A flaw becomes game time padding.

Ultimately, that's what a lot of smaller issues that snowballed into much more feels like: lazy programming. I'm willing to buy that perhaps it is the Switch hardware, but until I see otherwise, I won't be purchasing anything from this company again. The very few high notes (humor/story) simply aren't worth the torture of playing something made by people who learned to code last week.

The devs are bad and mean. The game was released on Newgrounds, but only as a demo! The game is better suited as a flash game from what I experienced from the Newgrounds demo (I don't own it), and it should have been full game on Newgrounds. Play the demo, and see if you like it. >:-(

When i first started the game and played the first two chapters, it was 10/10 for me. Intriguing story, fascinating characters, gorgeous world design and a fun gameplay experience.

Then the game started to show its problems, and one of these problems eventually ruined the overall experience for me.

This game has one of the worst pacing issues I've ever played. Once you completed the first dungeon, it just drags and drags, everything becomes such a chore to finish. For example:
    - there is a main quest later on where you have to take down a pillar-shaped enemy. Every time you destroy one pillar, it just generates one or two more, and every time you destroy all the pillars, it escapes to another map and you have to repeat the same thing again. And you have to go through multiple maps to finally beat it.
    - the "pvp" missions, why do I have to win all 5/5 duels? normall if I win 3/5 i am already a winner. especially one of the pvp duels against one specific character, even after you won 5/5, that character just keeps going and asks for yet ANOTHER duel.
    - the second the fourth dungeons, there are just so many puzzles and so many rooms. I love puzzles and I like most of the puzzles, the problem is not about solving the puzzle, it's about the awkward platforming and aiming mechanic. 99% of the time, I absolutely know what I have to do, but it takes me forever to aim it at the EXACT correct angel, or have to run all the way back to the start point of a puzzle because I misjudged the fake 3D platform (the one you think you can jump onto but it turns out to be higher)

Even the characters in the game are making fun of how boring and tedious the game can be, at least the devs are self-aware.
I really had to take several hiatuses from CrossCode to continue. At one point, I basically stopped caring for the story because all the dragging missions were so annoying to go through and they totally interrupted the progression of the story.

    The bottom line:
    - if you just want a puzzle game, this game is not for you.
    - if you just want an action RPG, this game might be for you.
    - if you just want a decent story, this game might not be for you.
    - if you hate puzzles, this game is definitely not for you.

The controls and level scheme allows for some replayability. You can choose to be melee, ranged, or a hybrid of the two. You can switch up what elements you focus. And while run of the mill quests and characters are disappointing in a beautiful game and a solid main story, the main draw to Crosscode is the combat and puzzles.

Puzzles are hard to the point where it can slow the playthrough down. That can be a good thing--but if you ever take a break from the game, you will have a hard time picking it back up because of all the nuances involved with each puzzle, whether it be platforming or objects you interact with. Combat has a satisfying level of difficulty as well.

All in all, a super solid game that translated very well to the switch.

I appreciate that they removed the major grindy issues of this game as some "MMORPG's" tend to have
The combat is engaging. There is a some button mashing enemies but you have to plan and find weak points in attacks.
However there was some major downfalls on this game for me:
    - The dudgeons. They should be a high point but they were just so long. With some puzzles requiring perfect timing and with so many rooms, it just broke me as it because such a chore.
    - The balancing between zones. For instance, in the first zone you fight enemies at level 11 and could be level 12 by the time to move on. But find the enemies in the next zone to be level 16, why the 5 level gap between zones?
    - I know you can adjust the difficulty in the game at any moment, as I found the game very difficult but the precision needed to shoot key areas to progress is too tight and became very frustrating.
    - Being a top-down game and lack of depth perception I wonder if the platforming had to be such a regular occurrence due to the amount of falls
    - Unlike MMO's the opportunity to find great loot is so sparse and you will end up buying gear from vendors. Anyone that play MMO's know that is not what you want to do.
It took me 45 hours to get though but feel it could of been a 30 hour experience and suited me better. It's a great game and expected something different then what I got. Recommended for the gaming enthusiasts out there that love huge dudgeons and a challenge.

Personally, I think that represents one of this game's main strengths: At no point during my playthrough of this game did I feel like the game was holding my hand. It treats the player with respect and never insults your intelligence. On the contrary: it demands that you learn its mechanics, and it is the first game I've played in a long while that had puzzles that felt challenging. Not cheap, not unnecessarily time-consuming, but challenging.

The Switch version does seem to have stability issues. Moving in a way where your party members can't keep up can cause the game to lag, as does having too many particle effects (which, given late-game AOE attacks, happens very easily) and the game tends to crash after cutscenes, especially towards the end (this doesn't cause any significant loss of progress, since the game autosaves before cutscenes).

Everything else, I would say, is unquestionably great. Whether you like it or not will come down entirely to taste. The art style is great, the characters are believable, the story does what it needs to do, the music slaps, and the gameplay is as polished as it is demanding.

9/10 A great experience all around but the Switch version specifically has its weaknesses.

There are some minor performance issues at unexpected times (navigating the menu even), but they don't often impact the game play so weren't really an issue.

    Mediocre game with abysmal controls.
The core gameplay of needing to switch elements on the fly combined with the hands down worst button mapping possible makes this game a pain to play. You need to dodge attacks all the time and swap elements very often. Both is done with the left thumb. Why they thought that is a good idea, is beyond me.

I had some doubts about this game but after 1-2 hours my opinion changed. It's beautiful, deep and interesting. Story and the characters are amazing. Surprisingly one of the best games I've played last couple of years.

After 50 hours I completed the game, and I need to lower the first grade I gave. I think the first part of the game is really good, but after that the entertaining and quality declined. Most of the sidequests get too monotonous and boring. The dungeons are confusing and not exciting, and I got the feeling, that I just wanted them finished. And as other peoples have mentioned, there are a really annoying problem with the platforms. You are standing on a platform and think, you can jump to another platform, but after you jump, you suddenly finds out, that it is far too high to reach. After my opinion they should have removed a lot of the sidequests and shortened the game and done something about the dungeons. I got the feeling that the producers lost track of the game.
But I want to say that the game have a good story and being easy to control. But it's a cheap game, and if you really love a RPG-game, then it might be worth a try. But I can say for sure, that I won't be playing the game again.

As a whole, CrossCode is a great game with a memorable story and great combat. It makes a great transition from the PC to the Switch aside from a few minor technicalities, and now players can enjoy this game on the go. The gameplay is a joy, taking the Zelda and Secret of Mana styles of gameplay and evolving it into something much better. However, the bombardment of puzzles throughout the game will turn off those who prefer more ‘action’ in their RPG formula. Nonetheless, this game provides a unique experience with plenty of the MMO-esque options and an incredible sense of world-building that will leave players with plenty to do and explore.

Honestly, CrossCode was not at the top of my most wanted list leading up to its launch in the eShop . . . but it probably should have been! [Issue #48 – September/October 2020, p. 23]

I very much enjoyed my trip to the CrossWorlds, much more than I ever did my trips to the World of Warcraft. The game is jam-packed with content, giving you upwards of 50 to 60 hours of enjoyment in your first playthrough. There are secrets galore to find, items to trade, and combat skills to master. However, the game never quite drew me in as much as I hoped when I first started playing, primarily due to the story issues. In the end, CrossCode is a slightly flawed action RPG masterpiece and an absolute stunning achievement for indie games. I can’t wait to see where the developers take the game in the next “patch.”
