It's not manageable and requires more luck than skill. It's really really hard to beat the AI because they drive with speed of light while you move at a snail's pace.
In order to win, you have to permaboost the whole track, get every shortcut, don't get hit once because you won't ever catch up again.
    This NEEDs to be balanced.
    - Loading times take too long
    - Online mode: If you think Mario Kart online is unstable and unfair, well this beats it. There are long waiting times, lag hiccups (appearing and disappearing opponents) and usually balance problems.

    Pros:

    - Very nice graphics. You really see the effort they put in
    - Kart customizatons

Edit: Thank you very much for all downvotes. Maybe you should try this game before voting.

So finally after 1 trillion fails I did it. Arrived first in Crash Cove on Hard Mode, BUT only with Penta Pinguin (one of the fastest guys around). At the end I'm more frustrated than pleased. I won by pure luck because the AI ignored me and kept shooting up itself.

The game can be good but, and that's a big but, it suffer from flaws that outweighs said good. The fact that i'm still getting disconnected from online matches, that finding an online game can take up to half an hour even though i'm using a wired connection is unforgivable, the grind for wumpa coins is unbearable and the fact that instead of increasing the number of coin gained; they thought of adding microtransactions 1 month after the game release says a lot about the people working on this game. Instead of providing a stable and enjoyable gameplay experience, they preferred to make everything tedious and call it a day. The only thing that is salvagable is the singleplayer mode and that's not saying much since this is a remaster and it would've been hard to mess that up. So basically buy it used, this game is not worth 40$. Expand

Lied about adding microtransactions. The game is great otherwise, but a publisher that is willing to lie to get positive reviews isn't worth supporting. Do not buy this game unless you want your experience to be ruined by scumy microtransactions. They have purposely made the game more difficult for the purpose of selling you what you already paid for.

Activision-Blizzard pulled a Blops4: they waited about a month to rack up goodwill reviews, then injected egregious, anti-consumer microtransactions after the overwhelming majority of people were done reviewing the game, and after promising not to add MTX. This is a long-standing pattern of behavior for them. NEVER trust an Activision-Blizzard product and their lies.

If you can get past that, the multiplayer is often so unbalanced that one person will usually end up beating the map so far in advanced the game won't let you finish. You can only race one map at a time - no cups. What makes this worse is that it is the best way to get coins to unlock parts.

Unlocking parts is very grindy - they typically require 1500+ coins for a single part, and single player only gives up to 60 coins per level. To gain more coins you have to play mp, see above.

Everything takes forever to load. While the design is good, everything is very obviously aliased and runs at 30 fps. These things are not a Switch issue - Mario Kart loads faster, looks better, online is fast to jump into with more players, and runs at 60 fps.

The good parts - the racing is fast paced and fluid. The sets are very nicely designed, albiet aliased. There are many parts to customize. Unfortunately these things feel very overshadowed by the lack of polish.

Do not buy this game. Even though it's a single player game, it needs to always be online. You cannot earn cosmetics while offline, so it basically doesn't work while in portable mode. Plus, there is a 45 second load time to get to the main game hub, not to mention each race.

It's an unfinished mess that I hope gets patched one day, because the races aren't bad. But this port is unplayable.

I did not have any nostalgia going into this, but I still expected it to be better than this. Sonic Team Racing was better than this. If you own Mario Kart, there is no reason to play this title. Controls do not feel the greatest, especially the drifting/boost. The game just doesn't feel fluid or satisying to play.

Guess what the game is GAMES AS A SERVICE which means if you don't play online you can't even earn skins in the game which means there's no sense of progression and hence no incentive to even play this as a singleplayer game. It also means once they shut down their servers (which WILL happen eventually) then you're screwed - there's no way to get the skins anymore. These "games as a service" games are being designed with OBSOLESCENCE in mind FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.

A game that could be fun, but was riddled with microtranastions!

Activision took a great game and chose to monetize it well after release. It was fun the way it released. You do MANY races and you can buy upgrades. Then Activision-Blizzard stepped in, to announce that you can avoid all the effort for a few dollars in their cash shop. Then a few dollars more here ... and there.

Yes, they have added extra content, but it's not only that extra content that you can spend money on, but it's also items that have been in the game from the getgo. It would have been fine to put in catchup mechanics but they made spending more money your only option.

The core gameplay is good. The game is well polished offline. Graphics looks good for a switch game but might have some drawbacks.

Online is janky. Your switch will have a hard time maintaining stable 30 fps in online races, and this can come to your disadvantage because you won't know when to jump, etc when the frames are lacking behind and skipping frames to keep up. The game does not have online split-screen races like Mario Kart 8 either. It seems like they went graphics > performance since it an easier sell for people who haven't played the game. Which is a big minus in a competitive racing game

I cannot give a better score when a publisher makes these slimy business moves to maximize profits on an already well selling successful game. If they want to expand a game, they should charge people for those expansions, not screw up the core game with microtransactions.

GP's aren't fun. If you log in every day and complete an online race they might be, but you will only unlock maybe 1/3 of the new items that way. If you want to unlock most of the new items, you will have to spend hours each day grinding OFFLINE battles since the challenges you get daily and weekly require you to complete very specific things in certain stages. You can't play those stages online and actually, have fun with real players since there are too many stages and modes for the game to pick at random, and thus you won't find other people to play with anyways. They should have made the challenges easier to complete and made them online-only and made matchmaking pick only stages and modes that are relevant for the current challenges.
