This game, while good, proves that Nintendo is behind other companies as the game's graphics don't even look that good on a TV screen.

Although the game is good, the switch port kinda sucks. If you look at games like Zelda Botw or Super Mario Odyssey you can see how good a switch game can look. Crash looks like a 2008 IPhone game in comparison.

This remake looks and sounds good, but those are the only compliments I can give it. I've always wanted to love Crash but despite all the quirkiness and colourful graphics I despise the original trilogy. These games are a relic of the past, back when developers were still trying to figure out how this brand spaking new 3D thing worked - and it shows.

I've always wanted to love Crash but despite all the quirkiness and colourful graphics I despise the original trilogy. These games are a relic of the past, back when developers were still trying to figure out how this brand spaking new 3D thing worked - and it shows.

The gameplay is beyond frustrating and in most cases it comes down to simple trial and error and cheap deathtraps you can't possibly react to the first time around.

The controls are stiff, while in the water levels you float all over the place and being precise is impossible. Jumps are ever so slightly low and short, just enough so that you can only barely reach neighbouring platforms if you're pixel-perfect and jump from the very edge on a cliff. Frustrating doesn't even begin to describe this. The third game gives you a double jump, which just like in Jak & Daxter needs to be performed within a certain time window. Press the button too late and instead of an elegant double jump you'll land in a lava pool.

Add to this an awful camera with an even worse perspective that makes it very hard to see where you're going to land. Occasionally the game goes into a 2D perspective, yet even then it's not truly 2D and you can still fall off the stage and to your doom by simply walking too close towards the screen or away from it.

No bad game is complete without lazy linear level design and one-hit deaths, and you will burn through dozens of lives in mere minutes - so prepare to be replaying those first few levels of each game and farming lives A LOT.

I've played Dark Souls and Bloodborne and neither of them are as frustratingly difficult as these 90's kids games. There's no fair challenge to be found here, it just boils down to a bunch of cheap deaths, memorisation and luck. If you're lucky and you don't fall through platforms or get electrocuted through a wall, you may even have a good time, if only briefly before anger and frustration inevitably get to you. A remake can only be as good as its source material, and frankly Crash was never good. If you're starved for some 90's nostalgia, play Spyro Reignited or the upcoming Medievil remake instead.

Expand

Back when I was a kid, I managed to achieve acquiring every single gem, crystal and platinum ankh in the second and third games, and when trying to do the same today, I marvel at the patience I must have had, because I had forgotten just how RIDICULOUSLY unfair the series was.

Toe barely over a cliff edge?
    You fall and die.
    Didn't jump far enough?
    You die.
    Jumped too far?
    You die.
Barely touch the edge of an enemy?
    You die.
Run past one enemy only for another one to suddenly surprise you over the hill because of the horrendous camera angles?
    You die.
    Jump too soon?
    You die.
    Jump too late?
    You die.
Spot an enemy on the screen as your sliding across a patch of ice, but you can't slow down in time?
    You die.
All your lives are gone. Game over.

And yet, somehow, Crash Bandicoot is still less forgiving than Dark Souls ever was. Gathering lives is a pain due to how many times you fall into pits. Gathering Aku masks is pointless for the same reason. Most of your deaths are due to falls, and this was always true in Crash Bandicoot games. When re-releasing the series, Vicarious Visions did nothing to update this, I imagine because they wanted to stay true to the original game's "spirit."

Well, the spirit of Crash is definitely there, and for that I'm grateful... but I'm also this close to chucking my controller across the room whenever I play these. I remember them being annoyingly hard, but not this harsh.

Still, a lot of the pain is worth reliving some of these games. The visuals are fantastic, and I never thought I'd see Crash updated to this level. And I'd be remiss if I didn't say I had a smile on my face when remembering myself as a kid, sitting on the floor with a Playstation controller in my hand and playing the hell out of these.

Are they as fun as I remember? Eh... sadly, no. They're a LOT more painful than I recall them being, and I don't know if that's intended or not. Do they reignite my love for old Playstation games? Absolutely.

Still... if you haven't played these games in the past, I actually wouldn't recommend them. They're at times insufferable and anger-inducing. Few games are as nonsensical as the Crash series nowadays, and there's a very good reason for that. Trial and error is really not any fun.

Most of the criticism I saw for this game is either in its difficulty or controls. And I can definitely agree that there are some pretty bad difficulty spikes in Crash 1. But other than that, these games are just really solid and fun platformers that every Jump and Run fan should play at least once.

The controls are unresponsive at times, which results in a lot of deaths. This can be very frustrating, and it will take a long time to beat one game out of the three. I feel like the controls were better on the original consoles because it took me longer to beat the game than when I was seven years old. Expand

At the fair price of $40, the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy offers three fun platforming classics that have been re-created from the ground up, and only minor adjustments have been made for the Switch. The first title suffer from its unification strategy, so it's a more frustrating experience, but Cortex Strikes Back and Warped play really well. The visual style and graphical performance on the Switch are fantastic thanks to the minor adjustments, making this a well-deserved port for the handheld's library.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy lands on the Nintendo Switch with a compilation of the first three games of the Crash Bandicoot series and what a welcome addition it is to the console's catalogue. Thanks to its charms, to its immense content and to a reworked visual outlook, this trilogy will provide many hours of fun for those feeling nostalgic for these games and to those curious to discover them.
