Crash Bandicoot is back for a nostalgia trip for those that have experienced the first three games, but only this time, the games are remastered to fit them all into a modern console. This is a game that I do recommend so you can at least experience the first three games in high definition whether for fun or nostalgia.

An excellent switch port. Runs great on both handheld and docked mode, although I would like it to be less blury on handheld mode. I've never played Crash games before so this is my first time jumping onto the series. Just amazing. A solid platformer game for switch owners.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is one of the best made ports to the Switch so far. Very good quality and enjoyable games with a few kinks of the past still lingering like the controls being a little bit slippery and trouble with depth perception. However, it does not take away from how fun and classic these games feel even in a high definition polish. Three games definitely worth $40.

I never played Crash Bandicoot for the Playstation, so this game is somewhat new to my playing (I know that is sad but true). However I really enjoyed playing it on the Switch. The challenge level is tougher than I ever imagined but just enough not to make it impossible. It is a great throwback game and one you should get if you are nostalgic on the 64-bit era.

After many years of disappointing games and being left alone in the shadows, Crash was finally back in 2017 with an incredible remaster of his original trilogy that took the gaming world by storm in the 90s. And now, one year after his amazing comeback, the world's favorite marsupial crashes the Nintendo Switch. But, does the hybrid console manages to run the game well?

The answer is yes. Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy is a well-made port that runs in a good resolution and a stable 30 fps, with absolutely no frame drops. Sure, some things such as the lightnings in some levels and the textures are quite toned down, but it's not a huge difference, as the game still looks beautiful on the TV and when playing on the go. The developers did a great job at porting this game to Nintendo's newest console.

Now, speaking aside from the port's quality and such, is the remaster really that good?

It's best to say that "good" is not enough to describe N.Sane Trilogy. This remaster keeps everything that the original Crash games had in terms of gameplay, level design, story, characters and such, but also improves on everything it has the chance to, such as the graphics, animations, and voice acting. Doing that, it not only creates a sense of familiarity and nostalgia by playing the three original Crash Bandicoot games remastered, but also gives us a feeling of "freshness", by being faithful to the original trilogy. To say it short, this is a remaster made with so much passion that will satisfy every fan of Crash Bandicoot.

Of course, that doesn't mean N.Sane Trilogy is absolutely perfect. By being faithful to the original games, the remaster also brings back a few problems that the original trilogy had, and doesn't try to fix them. Some things such as the controls at some levels and how it can become frustrating in a few moments are still there. These are things that long-time fans of the series won't have any problem with, but new players might not be ready to face a few of those problems and the big difficult these games bring. That doesn't mean it's impossible to adapt yourself to the game if you're a newcomer, though.

In the end, it's safe to say that Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy is one of the finest examples of how to make a remaster right, keeping everything important the original games had while tweaking everything it possibly can. This means that some common problems are brought back, but it's nothing the player cannot get used to. At the same time, the port for the Nintendo Switch is absolutely great, with no huge difference to the other versions. But, the greatest thing we all get from the remaster, is that Crash's finally back, and better than ever.

However, newcomers to the series may be put off by the steep difficulty spikes and little to no explanation of some of the finer mechanics. I remember playing all three of these Crash games back in the 90s when I had better hair and reflexes. I bought this game on PS4 last year and was hesitant to plop another 30-40 bucks on a technically inferior Switch version. But one of the Switch's selling points is its portability and that makes one's 'definitive' version of a cross-platform the Switch version one can take anywhere.

First, the graphics are noticeably worse than the PS4 version. No fancy hair effects on Crash, poorer shadows, and less vegetation are all easily recognized with a point of comparison. After playing for a few hours on a proper monitor though, those differences become less and less important. The resolution is a bummer however, I really wish they could have hit 1080p on docked. The frame-rate is solid and I haven't noticed any slowdown at all so far. The 30fps target isn't stellar but that's all this port had to aim for. ONE HUGE IMPROVEMENT comes with the load times. Holy cow! One of the main reasons I didn't like booting up or playing this game on PS4, was the obscene loadtimes for the games themselves and every level in and out. That hasn't been patched out as far as I know. On Switch everything loads quickly and is no longer an annoyance.

As far as the games themselves, they are still a blast if you like more old-school platformers. I've read some reviews that pain these games as out-dated or otherwise showing their age with regards to gameplay. I think that's an absurd argument. Certainly, these games are harder than a lot of more modern games, especially certain sections of Crash 1. The mechanics are more simple but they are tight and pushed to the hilt. The games challenge relies on precision jumping in both time and space.

I personally enjoy this style of gameplay. The levels are varied aesthetically and filled with secrets. For completionists there are plenty of very challenging activities in nearly every level.

It's not like Switch is hurting for platformers, but, if you like them this is definitely worth looking into because with 3 whole games in the package, you're getting some serious bang for your bucks.

The same fun seen in the original PS4 version is back and is arguably even better with the perk of playing this on the go and whenever or wherever you want. If you missed out on the PS4

And whilst you die a lot from your own mistakes and bad timing, the worst part is that you very often die for something that was simply not your fault, such as the fixed camera making precise jumps close to impossible or you having killed an enemy or broke a crate that you need to advance.

I guess the level making this the most obvious is "The high road", where you already have a hard time to do precise jumps due to the camera behind your back, but it also contains sections where you need a certain enemy to advance. An enemy you can kill. And if you die often enough, the game now gives you a protective mask, which makes things worse because not only does that not help with falling down, it also makes killing these enemies you need by accident a lot more likely.

Everybody who loved the original Crash Bandicoot games and wants to go through the frustration again: it's a great port with lovely graphics and attention paid to detail.

Everybody else: hands off that game. It is frustrating, very repetitive in level design, graphics and music and you simply notice that it was from the very early time of 3d jump and runs. You can get better ones for the Swich easily.

The controls are EVEN worse than the PS4 version, Crash is the touchiest character I've used in my life via these remakes. This remake looks and sounds good, but those are the only compliments I can give it. I've always wanted to love Crash but despite all the quirkiness and colourful graphics I despise the original trilogy. These games are a relic of the past, back when developers were still trying to figure out how this brand spaking new 3D thing worked - and it shows.

The gameplay is beyond frustrating and in most cases it comes down to simple trial and error and cheap deathtraps you can't possibly react to the first time around.

The controls are stiff, while in the water levels you float all over the place and being precise is impossible. Jumps are ever so slightly low and short, just enough so that you can only barely reach neighbouring platforms if you're pixel-perfect and jump from the very edge on a cliff. Frustrating doesn't even begin to describe this. The third game gives you a double jump, which just like in Jak & Daxter needs to be performed within a certain time window. Press the button too late and instead of an elegant double jump you'll land in a lava pool.

Add to this an awful camera with an even worse perspective that makes it very hard to see where you're going to land. Occasionally the game goes into a 2D perspective, yet even then it's not truly 2D and you can still fall off the stage and to your doom by simply walking too close towards the screen or away from it.

No bad game is complete without lazy linear level design and one-hit deaths, and you will burn through dozens of lives in mere minutes - so prepare to be replaying those first few levels of each game and farming lives A LOT.

I've played Dark Souls and Bloodborne and neither of them are as frustratingly difficult as these 90's kids games. There's no fair challenge to be found here, it just boils down to a bunch of cheap deaths, memorisation and luck. If you're lucky and you don't fall through platforms or get electrocuted through a wall, you may even have a good time, if only briefly before anger and frustration inevitably get to you. A remake can only be as good as its source material, and frankly Crash was never good. If you're starved for some 90's nostalgia, play Spyro Reignited or the upcoming Medievil remake instead.

Disappointing that the controls weren't worked on, as it can be unresponsive to input which results in dying. The frustration of Crash needs to come from things which are your own fault, not undetected input as an irrelevant animation finishes, flames which have visually finished toasting you or bad hitboxes. A true shame that this wasn't polished more, opening a new door for the bandicoot IP.

This game is a travel back to my childhood and it's as good as I remember(except for Crash 1, that game was not that good and, if you're not a completionist, you should leave it and play the other 2).

Expand

Crash Bandicoot was Dark Souls before Dark Souls was a thing-- and by that I mean, the difficult can be absurdly unrelenting. Crash Bandicoot is the epitome of "trial and error" gaming, and to get through most of the game's levels, you have to memorize them.

Back when I was a kid, I managed to achieve acquiring every single gem, crystal and platinum ankh in the second and third games, and when trying to do the same today, I marvel at the patience I must have had, because I had forgotten just how RIDICULOUSLY unfair the series was.

Toe barely over a cliff edge?
    You fall and die.
    Didn't jump far enough?
    You die.
    Jumped too far?
    You die.
Barely touch the edge of an enemy?
    You die.
Run past one enemy only for another one to suddenly surprise you over the hill because of the horrendous camera angles?
    You die.
    Jump too soon?
    You die.
    Jump too late?
    You die.
Spot an enemy on the screen as your sliding across a patch of ice, but you can't slow down in time?
    You die.
All your lives are gone. Game over.

And yet, somehow, Crash Bandicoot is still less forgiving than Dark Souls ever was. Gathering lives is a pain due to how many times you fall into pits. Gathering Aku masks is pointless for the same reason. Most of your deaths are due to falls, and this was always true in Crash Bandicoot games. When re-releasing the series, Vicarious Visions did nothing to update this, I imagine because they wanted to stay true to the original game's "spirit."

Well, the spirit of Crash is definitely there, and for that I'm grateful... but I'm also this close to chucking my controller across the room whenever I play these. I remember them being annoyingly hard, but not this harsh.

Still, a lot of the pain is worth reliving some of these games. The visuals are fantastic, and I never thought I'd see Crash updated to this level. And I'd be remiss if I didn't say I had a smile on my face when remembering myself as a kid, sitting on the floor with a Playstation controller in my hand and playing the hell out of these.

Are they as fun as I remember? Eh... sadly, no. They're a LOT more painful than I recall them being, and I don't know if that's intended or not. Do they reignite my love for old Playstation games? Absolutely.

Still... if you haven't played these games in the past, I actually wouldn't recommend them. They're at times insufferable and anger-inducing. Few games are as nonsensical as the Crash series nowadays, and there's a very good reason for that. Trial and error is really not any fun.

Recommend the game: its all the 3 best crash games ever in one, with better graphics. The lighting and a few characters may look weird, but the game is still as good to play and still looks fine, so no problem here. Also a few extras like coco and relics in the first 2 games.

Crash Bandicoot is an amazing trilogy and while growing up these were among my favorite games. Crash while silent is an engaging protagonist and there's lots of subtle humor throughout. The platforming is very polished minus a few moments in the second game (where there are some depth perception issues that aren't present elsewhere).

These 3 games are more than worth the price.

Most of the criticism I saw for this game is either in its difficulty or controls. And I can definitely agree that there are some pretty bad difficulty spikes in Crash 1. But other than that, these games are just really solid and fun platformers that every Jump and Run fan should play at least once.

Crash is back. Crash 2 and 3 are still the best in the series and crash 1 is still is fun to play. There's not a lot to complain about crash looks great and you can now also play as coco. The only thing they did that was questionable was that they made all the games have Crash 3 physic so platforming in Crash 1 and 2 can feel off and be a little bit off when landing on the edge of a platform.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The 'supposedly enhanced' and aptly named N SANE Trilogy has a far bigger impact on visual quality rather than the actual controls and game play compatibility. Completely built from the ground up with the Olds specs comes a remained modern day spin on the old classics. But does it hold up? Sort of.

My main gripe with remasters is the way changes are made to 'enhance' an already established play style that isn't broken to begin with. FOR EXAMPLE, Crash controlled differently across all three games for a reason. As the games went on his mobility improved and granted him access to powerups that allowed the marsupi to not rely so much on just solely jumping. This is why his base jump is pretty weak in Warped. However, the devs wanted to make the controls of the remaster feel consistent and unified. So they based all control off of the third games jumping. THIS MAKES THE OTHER GAMES FEEL INCREDIBLY OFF. And that's not the only problem. With current Gen tech, the hit boxes on Crash's feet are pill shaped and this means he will slip off of platforms way easier. Along with a bunch of other wonky changes to his controls, frankly this makes the game such a chore for new and old fans alike. In fact, the time trials, which were added to the first and second game as well, are horrendous. Even the gimmick levels have been tampered with on vehicle stages. It's atrocious. The game may look good but it plays like Crash is carrying around a lot more weight and the slightest fault will send you plummeting to your demise. The only thing the old games needed fixing was the PAL version. But this game just needs to be forgotten entirely. It's sickening.

Imagine a boost pad that sends you into enemies off-camera you can't see with no time to react. This is in one of the levels and I died to it many times. The life system is completely unnecessary, because you are likely to lose all accumulated lives to bosses or badly designed levels. The game tries to be difficult and it is, but not because of the platforming challenges. It is because you can't properly look around yourself due to the locked-in-place camera and also bad level design.

There is one level in the first game, where there is a section with platforms appearing and then falling and platforms visible in the distance, with wumpa fruit trail into the void. So I thought I should follow the fruit, boom, death. WHAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO DO was to jump onto a completely arbitrary spot, on a platform that is about to collapse and fall, and from there, jump onto an off-screen platform. This game's design is literally so cheap and poor I can't believe someone considers it as some amazing platformer.

Not even mentioning the hitboxes and killer Nitro crates that jump from time to time, ending up killing you if the RNG feels like it. And also the incredibly sensitive controls... hmph. Awful game.

At the fair price of $40, the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy offers three fun platforming classics that have been re-created from the ground up, and only minor adjustments have been made for the Switch. The first title suffer from its unification strategy, so it's a more frustrating experience, but Cortex Strikes Back and Warped play really well. The visual style and graphical performance on the Switch are fantastic thanks to the minor adjustments, making this a well-deserved port for the handheld's library.
