Cosmic Star Heroine on the Switch is the definitive version of the game. While I would’ve hoped for things like touch support to progress dialogue text, I can safely recommend this to anyone looking for a great RPG to play on the Switch.

Cosmic Star Heroine is an homage to classic 90s sci-fi RPGS, and it works really well to evoke that sense of adventure. It may be a short affair, but its combat mechanics are tight, the drudgery of traditional JRPGs is wiped away by clever design decisions, and at fifteen bucks, it's well worth the price of entry.

It’s not difficult to find new games that are designed with the 16-bit era in mind, but it is rare to find ones that develop new and enjoyable game mechanics. While the writing could have benefited from some additional depth, the expansive party and combat options provide hours of entertainment, making Cosmic Star Heroine a worthwhile addition to your Switch library.

At a first glance, Cosmic Star Heroine is a throwback to the JRPGs of the past. With a superb pixel-art style, deep combat system and fast-paced narrative, it becomes much more than a mere homage.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a retro style RPG that will delight lovers of the genre, but that will leave you wanting more and a bittersweet taste when you see the unexploited potential that could have turned it into a AAA game.

A nostalgic experience that is worth playing if you are a fan of the 16-bit JRPG era. The cast is full of wonderful characters, the plot interesting and the battle system engaging. The whole game is wrapped up in a ten-twelve hour experience which was the perfect length to see the story out.

Cosmic Star Heroine is an accessible RPG that fits very well with the Switch’s lineup. While some issues like bugs and an underwhelming story hold it back from being an RPG classic, the experience is propelled by its innovative and creative combat system and eclectic cast of characters.

Some of the most basic ideas taken from other games are present as day here, as well as some parts of the game missing such core elements, like music at the beginning for example, to make one believe this was made in some RPG maker by some amateur, the tutorials go right over your head with made up words and mechanics that you've yet to even try or look at, as well as every moment in the game making you go "Oh.... okay?"

    Not recommended for purchase.

Graphics and music wise, the game is great, but rather standard. In the mechanics field it seems to shine, or at the very least deviate greatly from the norm. The battle have a few interesting mechanics that keep most fights from being same-y while giving you all the options you need. Battles are not random, you can see enemies coming, and there are very few of them, but you can always grind by initiating battles from the menu. Items tend to be less stat-oriented and give you unique features that help you adjust your strategy.

The story and characters are mostly forgettable but the overall experience is fun.

I recommend this to anyone who's looking for something unique to fill the void between major releases.
