Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a really charming, cute, and unique game. Seeing every new level is a delight. The only problem is the game gets super repetitive fast. Best played in small doses.

The thing is, they can't jump, so you'll need to find other ways to get there, such as climbing ladders or standing on rising platforms. A big challenge comes in collecting the three Super Gems in each level. Sometimes they are hidden behind head-scratching puzzles.

The puzzle gameplay is as great as it was on Wii U...except for the controls. Whereas the Wii U version has you touching the GamePad screen to move platforms, here you either have to touch the console screen in handheld mode or, on TV, move a cursor (with the controller) to the platform and press a button. These controls felt awkward to me, and although I got used to them somewhat as I played, it's not as good as the Wii U version.

Regarding differences between this and the Wii U version, there's not much. Basically, the Super Mario 3D World levels are replaced by equally entertaining Super Mario Odyssey levels.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a fun game that has gained a few issues in the conversion from Wii U to Switch. You could go far worse than this port, but I recommend the Wii U version over it due to better controls.

I'd originally played this on Wii U. The levels are fun to play through, and there is a great variety of stages to work through, so it was an easy enough decision to get this again. No one is forcing a person to re-buy a port so I don't really see why some people get so upset when they do so.

Perhaps a 3rd book would have been a welcome addition to add into this port but there is enough variety and number of stages that lack of new content shouldn't be much of a deal breaker, perhaps we can hold out hope that they will offer DLC in form of a 3rd book or make a sequel in future, for now we can enjoy the Mario Odyssey themed level additions. its about 40% less than the cost of most other titles on Switch. This game was never offered as a full priced title even back when it was on Wii U and for the cost of the game I'd say you get a decent amount of content included for what you are spending on the game.

I'd recommend playing this game either with a pro-controller or handheld, since controlling the camera with the second joy-con can be awkward given its placement, and the amount of camera adjusting you'll do in this game. Using the gyroscope sensor to manipulate the puzzle aspects of each level was an easy enough work around since we no longer have a touch pad in docked mode.

Now that I showed what I think that are the biggest flaws of this game, I'm going to write it's major strengths. Captain Toad : Treasure Tracker is a nicely done puzzle experience with 70 levels with various and creative ways to finish them which makes every single level unique and fun to play. The artstyle also makes the game cute and gorgeous.

Though I’m mainly referring to the main line Mario games like Odyssey and Galaxy, and most of the Paper Mario games. Their wholesomeness and charm never fail to make me feel like a child again.

Captain Toad is the first sideline Mario game to produce that same, childlike happy feeling in me. It’s infinitely satisfying to guide the adorable little pairing of Toad and Toadette through a series of perils to get to each and every star, and that happy dance they make when you do always have me a warm little happy feeling.

This game has great puzzle design, and I had tremendous fun discovering each and every new level, but I gave this an 8 because there isn't much replay value, the controls are awkward on the levels where you're running across platforms instead of solving puzzles, sometimes the camera feels awkward, and the narrative doesn't really give you anything. To extrapolate on that last point, I know Mario narratives are traditionally simple: Bowser kidnaps princess to marry her because Bowser wants to be king, or whatever reasons Nintendo happens to give him for that game, but at least there's usually just enough there to explain why you're running through the stages and collecting stuff, but Captain Toad doesn't even give you the bare minimum. There's a bird, the bird kidnaps Toadette and steals a star for reasons, and there are other stars, and you're collecting stars because you're a Treasure Tracker I guess judging by the title of the game, and you collect them arbitrarily on your way to save Toadette from the bird (spoiler?: and this reapeats itself in the second episode, where the bird kidnaps Toad, and you play as Toadette traveling to save Toad, and then there's a third episode where you alternate between Toad and Toadette trying to find each other after getting separated again). I mean, in previous games you're usually collecting stars to power something that will get you somewhere or allow you to go somewhere, and it's never the important part of the game, but it does at least motivate the action of the game and give you a reason to be exploring the brilliantly designed levels. This time around, you're just doing it for the sake of doing it. And that's not bad at all. I still had tremendous fun with this game. But I still do wish there was just a little more there.

Anyways, I loved Treasure Tracker, it's adorable, infinitely charming, and smartly designed.

What is the genre and subgenre of the game?

Captain Toad is a straight up Puzzle game and its one of the best Puzzle games that I have ever played.

What did I think of the story?

The story is very basic and its a classic Nintendo story. Toad and Toadette are hanging out and all of a sudden the main villain Wingo appears and takes Toadette. Toad has to make his way through the levels to find Toadette. That's Act 1, Act 2 is Toadette makes here way through levels and then Act 3 is them coming together.

    Favorite Character?

The characters are Toad and Toadette. They're exactly the same except for a palate swap making Toadette a female that has more pink.

    How are the Puzzles?

This is the bulk of the game, each level is a small series of short puzzles. Each level has 3 diamonds that you want to collect and you want to make it the star which is the end of the level. You need to collect the diamonds because that's how you unlock new areas in the world but you also need to collect the star at the end of every level because that's how you move onto the next level.

What is the gameplay like and how does it feel?

I kind of went over the gameplay before. Start a level, figure out how to collect all 3 diamonds, then figure out how to get to the star so that you have completed the level. Rinse and repeat for maybe 10 hours and then you've beaten the game. It's a very simple concept and it's a fun game to make your way through slowly. Personally me, it took a couple weeks to beat the game but that was because I would sit down and go through a few levels so I sat down and played maybe a half hour every night for a couple weeks.

What is my favorite moment or sequence from the game?

I really like the way the game set up the first boss battle. Where you're just traversing up through the level and then you accidentally defeat the boss. Its a perfect way for Toad to defeat an enemy. Unfortunately, they rehash this boss battle 3 or 4 times. After the first time, the idea loses its charm.

    Was it fun?

Yes, its a very simple concept but very rewarding and enjoyable. It's not too difficult but there are times where you will have to stop and just think about your next few steps.

How is the sound design and music?

As with any Nintendo game, the music design is on point.

    How are the missions/levels designed?

Every level is on its own separate cube where you just move around. Which keep in mind Toad has very limited mobility. He can walk, slowly run, climb ladders but can not jump. So if you need to get to a higher elevation, your options are to walk onto an elevator or climb a ladder. Now keep in mind, every level has secrets hidden on all sides and all over the place. So you're constantly rotating the camera around looking for areas for Toad to explore.

AT least Nintendo had the common sense to not charge full price for this game. 2 years of premium prices and recycled content... that's what you got. If you already played TT there is "absolutely" no reason to play this game, and once again Nintendo does nothing to honor the million plus that already bought it. They are getting a copy and paste title.

Soundtrack is nice, albeit repetitive, but it packs a few cozy and entertaining songs. Sound design goes without saying, since Nintendo always knocks it out of the park on this aspect. Graphics feel "comfortable" and safe, waving from deliciously built levels and some very simple moments, that warmed my heart.

Still, there are a few things to dislike here. The camera, although mostly 'ok', can become a pain. Controls can feel a little bit stiff, sometimes. Some levels are unnecessarily "big" and this Switch version, overall, might just outstay its welcome. "Boo" levels seem to always drop the ball and the "special" and "bonus" levels lack the variety and creativity from regular chapters. Also, the game is way better when played by couch co-op, since a few stages feel like they were exclusively built for it.

But the bad aspects of this game does not outweighs the good ones. This is a very accessible, well-crafted and beautifully designed product. It may not be perfect or super creative all the way through, but it's totally worth it.

Fun and unique game. The puzzles are creative and the graphics are smooth and appealing. The gameplay feels great and motion controls didn't feel unnecessary. However, do note that there is little to no story and the game feels extremely repetitive after the 2nd chapter.

Absolutely a great game. Fairly easy puzzles. Not a fan of the bosses but I never am. Level 15 is annoying so I’d skip it if you’re not a perfectionist. Fun game but 82 levels is kinda long. Wish it was shorter. Other than that, worth getting.

Even if that is the case the game has many unique level design choices that it makes you smile of how creative some levels can be, the soundtrack is supportive as well. Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is a unique puzzle game that keeps giving new ideas each time you play a level, the charm is always there and it always keeps the game alive, I just wish if completing the levels 100% would have a better rewarding outcome. Game looks good and there are always different puzzles that are challenging, fun, and engaging! This may be a port, but there is a bonus book which has puzzles based off of scenes from Super Mario Odyssey which is really neat. I dislike that the books have the same story line where Toad gets stolen then Toadette and back to Toad. It is just a repetitive storyline. Captain Toad; Treasure Tracker is a fun puzzle game worth trying. In terms of gameplay, this game is really fun and brings up a neat concept. You can not jump whatsoever, which can lead to interesting levels. This game's level design is superb. I love the ideas and the use of the touchscreen and gyro controls can be really awesome. This game's main campaign is pretty darn short, but the run was quite fun. There's quite a bit of extra content to go around like collecting green stars or finding pixel Toads. This is completely optional and is great for dedicated fans. This game has a co-op mode. It actually can be really fun if you have a friend over. I remember pushing my friend off the maps with the touchscreen blocks. This game's music is mostly taken from 3D world, which has a great soundtrack. In conclusion, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a simplistic yet fun puzzle game that a load of casual players can easily enjoy. Have a lovely day/night, folks! Expand

An absolutely lovely little puzzle game that anyone can enjoy. Every level is its own little world, meticulously crafted by the developers, reminiscent of a little terrarium. I find myself coming back to this game regularly when I want to relax and work a simple puzzle or two before bed. Perfect for cozy nights inside with blankets and a cup of tea.

Fun, relaxing game. Works well with a younger co-op partner. One unforgivable issue with the game is that the on-screen prompt displayed when using the wheel/crank frequently obstructs your view completely. This usually occurs at difficult spots like during the dragon levels, which are already hard to orient yourself.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker just brings a smile to my face. There is nothing else like it. It's fun, slow-paced but thoughtful, 3-D puzzle platforming at it's best. Nintendo delivers once again. My only complaint is that the motion control target eye could be smoother and work better. Other than that, this game gets a big thumbs up from me.

A collection of fun inventive puzzles with colourful and polished graphics and a cute story make this an instant classic. The diorama style levels make this perfect for handheld play, each with interesting mechanics and secrets to discover. At a lower price than most Nintendo games this game delivers a lot of value with some great DLC offering even more levels.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a cute little puzzle game. Each level is fun, individual and offers a little challenge. One point of criticism, however, is the implementation of the touch elements, which makes you realize that the game is actually a Wii U game. Otherwise, the game is great!

Overall, Treasure Tracker is a real gem of a game. It’s also beautiful; I was stunned by it on Wii U, but the visuals have only gotten better on Switch. It’s bright, cheery, and wildly creative from an aesthetic standpoint. Each stage is like a diorama, making the game feel like the player is interacting with toys, rather than lines of code. The soundtrack isn’t especially varied, likely because most stages don’t require a lot of time to beat, but I’d have appreciated a few more tracks to spice things up.
