Brawlhalla is a great, free alternative to Super Smash Bros., but just doesn’t have the same spark that makes it stand out beyond that. Still, if you love the grind and want something new to play with your friends without needing an online subscription, this is a good choice.

Though a bit uninspired, Brawlhalla still stands as a solid example of how to do a proper platform fighter, with several game modes, a diverse cast and a beautiful art style making this one easy to recommend. Perhaps best of all, it’s totally free, so you really don’t have anything to lose by giving it a try. At worst, you’ll find a Smash clone that doesn’t have a ton of new ideas; at best, you’ll find a new go-to for when you have a few friends over for a gaming session.

A nice way to pass the time. Nothing spectacular but still fast-paced and exciting to play.

Extra Notes: Pretty good fighting game considering it is free. I had a lot of fun with this game, and its pretty easy to get into as a beginner whilst leaving space to learn the mechanics and get deeper invested in the game

Matchmaking is mostly full of elitist wannabes and other tryhards who spam the same moves over and over again. Not helping is the fact that I'm fighting the same three to five characters over and over again. Some fights get so chaotic that I can barely fight anyone, and just watching certain attacks is enough to piss me off. If this game is supposed to encourage sportsmanship, then it's doing a piss-poor job, especially with taunts like "So Salty" and "Calculated". The crossover events are also pretty damn lazy, since a bunch of cartoon characters HARDLY fit into this disaster of a game. The only good thing I can find about the game is that the characters are really creative in terms of both design and weapons, but that's the ONLY good thing I see. Blue Mammoth needs to go back to the drawing board for the rest of the game, though, and make mammoth coins more accessible. I thought this would have been another fun decent Smash clone, but this is somehow worse than Ultimate. No approval from me. Full Review »
