Anti-social writing clashes harshly with cozy art style.

I did not buy a cute game with cartoon animals to read incessantly and unecessarily and unprovokedly cold, mean, biting words spoken for no story-related purpose. It's just the writer's horribly out of tone style. I hate it. It ruins this game, as it does many other artsy indies.

People don't have to talk that way to each other. I don't speak that way to my friends, family, or strangers. Just because it happens some times to some people doesn't mean it is universally relatable or has any appeal in escapist fiction. In gritty, realistic fiction, sure. It belongs.

But not embedded in an otherwise nice little game. It's word poison. The writer ruined the game.

This is a beautiful game but sadly seems very unpolished and not at all optimized for the switch console. Most notably, I experienced several game crashes, which aren't that bad luckily thanks to the auto save feature but it's annoying nontheless. Loading times on the switch are way too long for a game like this and get longer the more you play. In several instances the game just seems unpolished or downright unfinished. The cooking mechanic for example isn't fun at all on the switch and I can't imagine that it's much better on pc. It's not fun, it takes forever and I have no idea what the plan behind it was. But what makes clunky game elements like this even worse on the switch are the extremely awful controls. Never have I seen such overly complicated and unoptimized controls. You have to press a or b a dozen times before doing ONE simple action in the menu. And because this is a crafting and building and cooking game, you will have to do A LOT of that. It is honestly so annoying that I considered getting a refund if possible. Which would be a shame because this game is so charming in almost all other aspect than the technical ones. It has a lovely art style, such a fun story and wonderful characters. The idea overall is amazing too but it just doesn't work out that well. There are also smaller issues that just make the game seem unpolished in other aspects: you can't sell or otherwise get value out of any items you collected, bought or crafted. Since trash (one of the two currencies) gets more rare and harder to find later on, this would have been a good opportunity to give the player and additional option to get trash (recycling of old items). Sometimes things just don't work, even though I'm never sure if it's a bug or just the horrible controls again. All of this is, as I said, such a shame because the idea, the art style and character designs are amazing. I do not recommend buying this game for the switch at all. If the art style and idea is something you'd absolutely love, rather get it for pc. Otherwise I don't know if I'd recommend it at all at this stage. But I do hope it gets some very much needed updates in the future. If they sort their technical issues out and optimize some of the horribly clunky or missed features, this game would be one if my favourites for sure. Would love to come back here in a few months and give a better score. Expand

I wanted to love this game, as I’m a big fan of building and resource gathering sims. But the game feels almost unplayable in its current state. There is also a lot of lag during autosaves. The UI is very frustrating to deal with as well. The text is very small on both handheld and docked, and there is no option to upscale it. Functionally, the UI is unnecessary complicated. The tutorial, that pops up automatically, cannot be scrolled through or closed without activating the Y menu. From what I can tell, each section of every menu must be selected separately before you can interact with any item or option on that menu. This causes you to have to enter and exit menus constantly. As one reviewer said, the cooking function is nearly impossible to use despite it being necessary for multiple quests in the game. Now, I gave my rating as a 3 because there are enjoyable aspects to the game. The art style is pleasant, and the concept is fun. If the game gets updates to fix these critical issues, I’d consider trying to finish it. But, for now, I deleted it and do not recommend. Expand

This game does not work for console controller. The UI and controls are terribly solved for switch, though I can see the lack of problems with the way it's design with a keyboard and mouse in mind. It's completely inconsistent, to confirm/perform an action you sometimes click the A button and sometimes it's the Y, or the X, and even R3 if you're in build mode. It's completely inconsistent, to confirm/perform an action you sometimes click the A button and sometimes it's the Y, or the X, and even R3 if you're in build mode. Not only that, but the text is barely legible, if I'm on handheld mode it's impossible to read anything on screen, and on tv I have a lot of difficulty. The scores of the rooms are so thick it's blurry, I can never figure it out if it's a 33 or a 24, the missions strike through is barely different from not accomplished tasks, the cooking menu is unnecessarily hard to navigate just as much as the in game menu is unnecessarily filled with partial selections (you need to select the menu, then a section, so you can access the items in this section that are visible the entire time). Not only that, but the organization of the crafting catalogue has no value, since you can't really filter by sections, like only showing the bathroom items, or maybe level 1, 2,3 items. You actually have tabs but the remaining tabs have no content. A lot of this things are easily fixable with the help of a designer, swapping typefaces and colors for a better readability and consider a bigger font size can improve so much of the navigation. I have headaches after playing a little bit of the game because of the effort on trying to read the scores. Navigation can also improve vastly by removing some unnecessary clicks in the middle (you don't need to select each part of the menu you want to open, you don't need to select the inventory when you're already in build mode. Craft mode and cooking would also work way better if we could navigate more easily in the sections. In cooking, there's only the cook book that you need to go back and forth in pages, so you could unlock the sections and keep the button to return to the cooking recipes without breaking the rest of navigation. Controls being fixed, typefaces being changed for better readability, my grading would easily raise to 7 or 8. The game is quirky and there's a lot of attention to details when it's come to story telling, the music is really nice (despite the standard sound mixing being the game sounds so loud it's unbearable to stay in A24), but the actual playing of this game makes it unaccessible, too tricky and annoying and induces too much errors. I believe in your prospects, but this way it's just a terrible game Expand

Undoubtedly, the most remarkable aspect from the beginning is the artistic section of Bear and Breakfast, really beautiful and very consistent with this game. Highly recommend on Nintendo Switch.

Bear & Breakfast has its share of issues, but it's filled with great characters, wonderful visuals and pretty sweet music. Hopefully it's a little more stable by the time this issue goes to print, and the devs implement some more U.I. improvements. My 3-star review: It's OK, but would be better with some extra polish. Bear and Breakfast is a cosy and relaxing management sim that offers players rewarding gameplay and an exciting story. The game does suffer with some janky controls and a HUD system that needs tweaking for Nintendo Switch systems, but if you want a management sim that isn’t the run-of-the-mill, this one’s for you.
