    Bear & Breakfast has its share of issues, but it's filled with great characters, wonderful visuals and pretty sweet music. Hopefully it's a little more stable by the time this issue goes to print, and the devs implement some more U.I. improvements. My 3-star review: It's OK, but would be better with some extra polish. [Issue #62 – November/December 2022, p. 28]

    Bear and Breakfast is a cosy and relaxing management sim that offers players rewarding gameplay and an exciting story. The game does suffer with some janky controls and a HUD system that needs tweaking for Nintendo Switch systems, but if you want a management sim that isn’t the run-of-the-mill, this one’s for you.

    The most glaring problem for Bear and Breakfast is that controlling the game is an immense chore on Switch, which means it ends up being a chore to help a bear complete his own chores. Opening up new areas and completing specific goals to move forward in the game is rewarding, but trying to navigate menus with the clumsy control scheme isn't worth getting out of bed for. Despite its flaws, Bear and Breakfast is no doubt a better game on PC, so play it there if you're smarter than the average bear.

    There’s a massive gulf between finding a game’s concept charming and actually wanted to play that game, and Bear and Breakfast never comes anywhere close to crossing that gaping chasm.

Didn't experience crashes like the other reviews on here indicated. Maybe their was an update by the time I started playing and it's no longer an issue. This is an asolutely adorable game. Seriously when i started like 10 hours just flew by like it was nothing because I could not get away.

    The writing and humor in this game just took it to the next level for me. It was adorably witty, dry and fit with the theme really well of being a bumbling bear trying to run a business that they are not at all qualified to do. The premise is nonsense and I love that the writers acknowledged it and made some good consistent jokes. The Cruel shark character was probably my favorite. The shark consistently would read you to filth in such a high camp way, I definitely giggled a ton.

    The management aspect of this has such a good loop too. The game design was clever with how they eased you into harder things. For example you start your first area just making room, don't have to worry about bathrooms because there's an outhouse already and don't have to stress about anything else just rooms. The 2nd area they then ask for rooms and bathrooms, don't have to worry about dining though since there is a diner in the area. The 3rd area you then have to worry bout all 3 with the addition of cooking. Etc. Etc. Etc.
    The design behind this was fun and felt like meaningful progression to manage more and more. Right when you're in you're way to the 4th area the game does a great thing too and opens up hiring a concierge so the stress of managing all the properties don't tie you down too much either so I never felt overwhelmed. Just superb job with pacing, it just felt so fluid ! Designing, Building and making guests happy was fun to try and maximize what I can do with each space given. The currency starts flowing in easily so it's fun to go back and make upgrades periodically and really mid max.

    Only thing I didn't like about the game were the UI was a bit difficult with a controller. It felt like it used touch screen logic but there is no touch screen enabled. Very weird UI use that in the beginning made me feel a bit cluttered navigating, by the time I'm on to building area 3 though was right around when I hardly noticed anymore. The cooking part I think trained my brain with where they were going with control. It was complicated wrapping my head around it but you get used to it.

    Overall this game is quirky, adorable and excellently paced. As long as you're patient with learning the controls and UI awkwardness then this game is totally rewarding. It made me smile and feel fuzzy inside with its campy writing combined with a great management sim.    … Full Review »

The UI and controls are terribly solved for switch, though I can see the lack of problems with the way it's design with a keyboard and mouse in mind. It's completely inconsistent, to confirm/perform an action you sometimes click the A button and sometimes it's the Y, or the X, and even R3 if you're in build mode. Not only that, but the text is barely legible, if I'm on handheld mode it's impossible to read anything on screen, and on tv I have a lot of difficulty. The scores of the rooms are so thick it's blurry, I can never figure it out if it's a 33 or a 24, the missions strike through is barely different from not accomplished tasks, the cooking menu is unnecessarily hard to navigate just as much as the in game menu is unnecessarily filled with partial selections (you need to select the menu, then a section, so you can access the items in this section that are visible the entire time). Not only that, but the organization of the crafting catalogue has no value, since you can't really filter by sections, like only showing the bathroom items, or maybe level 1, 2,3 items. You actually have tabs but the remaining tabs have no content. A lot of this things are easily fixable with the help of a designer, swapping typefaces and colors for a better readability and consider a bigger font size can improve so much of the navigation. I have headaches after playing a little bit of the game because of the effort on trying to read the scores. Navigation can also improve vastly by removing some unnecessary clicks in the middle (you don't need to select each part of the menu you want to open, you don't need to select the inventory when you're already in build mode. Craft mode and cooking would also work way better if we could navigate more easily in the sections. In cooking, there's only the cook book that you need to go back and forth in pages, so you could unlock the sections and keep the button to return to the cooking recipes without breaking the rest of navigation. Controls being fixed, typefaces being changed for better readability, my grading would easily raise to 7 or 8. The game is quirky and there's a lot of attention to details when it's come to story telling, the music is really nice (despite the standard sound mixing being the game sounds so loud it's unbearable to stay in A24), but the actual playing of this game makes it unaccessible, too tricky and annoying and induces too much errors. I believe in your prospects, but this way it's just a terrible game… Full Review »
