Each descent into the pit begins with an almost pathetic damage output but as you gradually gather a chaotic constellation of powers, the screen begins to resemble a pinball table on overdrive, an intoxicating display of destruction orchestrated by you. It’s anything but a straight shooter, it’s a memorably sideways take on a classic.

BALL X PIT is exemplary of what a great game should be. Combining simple to learn mechanics, with a lot of depth and variety into a strangely unique beast of a roguelike. Once it got its fangs into me, the game simply wouldn’t let me go. Above all what struck me the most is that it's a game that looks almost effortless in its brilliance. Yet, the attention to detail and the sheer amount of customization feels unexhaustive. I have gone back into this pit again and again over the last few weeks and I am still not getting tired of it. You’re even able to challenge your friends on leaderboards with the fastest time that can keep you engaged for long after you’ve reached the bottom of this pit. BALL X PIT filled a hole, or a pit if you will, for me that I wasn’t aware I had. The only thing I can do is keep crawling back out, shouting that others should join in, before I’m dragged back into its depths again. I don’t think I’ll be leaving the BALL X PIT anytime soon.

In its current state, BALL x PIT is dangerous for my free time. It feels laser-targeted to me in somehow combining bits from genres I enjoy into something incredible. The Nintendo Switch version has a few rough edges and the game itself could use some visual tweaks for better readability, but I absolutely adore the time I’ve put into BALL x PIT. I can’t wait to work at unlocking everything it has to offer, assuming I don’t delete it so I can be more productive.

Ball x Pit is a tremendous brew of so many ideas it ought to collapse under the confusion. However, it operates in such perfect balance that it appeals both to the one-more-go instinct and to more cerebral planning and creativity. Kenny Sun Studios set itself a heck of a challenge but, fortunately, hasn’t dropped the ball.

Ball X Pit carries the spirit of an arcade classic, while imbuing it with modern roguelike ideas. It’s immediately one of the best indie games of the year.

Overall, Ball X Pit is one of the most fun games I’ve played this year. The bouncing-ball mechanic is a game-changer. Couple the addictive gameplay with the upgradeable characters and light sim elements, and Ball X Pit is easy to recommend.

Despite having a lot of verbs, stats, tinkering, and codexes, Ball x Pit feels brainless. I’m just clicking on things to make numbers go up, because numbers going up is the only way I’m going to get through a level. There’s no clever strategy or hidden breakthroughs buried off the beaten path, which is weird in an action game based on pinball you can mold into turn-based combat at one point. For all the gimmicks, ideas, and mechanics Ball x Pit has up its sleeves, it’s so focused on Being a Roguelike it misses the forest for the trees and corners you with stats from the jump. While Vampire Survivors makes me sidestep my own tastes, Ball x Pit simply reinforced them.
