  • Summary: You are Hidalgo Bladewing, a bird with a beef. You'll hack, slash, and soar through a beautifully chaotic pixel-art neonscape in your quest to save your feathered friends. Deep roguelite elements and enough demonic sword sass to keep you laughing between dodging Tengu hordes!

Atomic Owl is a beautifully drawn and well-orchestrated platformer that wavers between a punishing retro 2D sidescroller and a roguelike. If it had made a bolder stab at one of those genres, perhaps its gameplay would feel meaningful. For now, there are other roguelike platformers that are deserving of your time.

When you’re trying to compete in a crowded genre space, forgettable play and iffy controls don’t help make a great impression.

Atomic Owl markets itself as a frantic roguelite, but delivers neither; slow combat, few resources to strengthen yourself, and several performance issues on the Nintendo console. Even the non-roguelite mode was added without much thought and created a type of difficulty that is almost a softlock, requiring rebalancing and perhaps a bit more polish, especially to consider gameplay on a handheld.
