I got the collection for AC4, often touted as the "best" AC game, as my entrypoint into this popular and controversial series. Disappointedly, I found the game very mediocre. It starts off strong enough with a fun chase scene that introduces the player to a lucious, tropical setting in the Carribean and interesting characters. The protagonist, Edward Kenway, is also immediately likeable.I got the collection for AC4, often touted as the "best" AC game, as my entrypoint into this popular and controversial series. Disappointedly, I found the game very mediocre. It starts off strong enough with a fun chase scene that introduces the player to a lucious, tropical setting in the Carribean and interesting characters. The protagonist, Edward Kenway, is also immediately likeable. But the praise basically stops there. Each cutscene is only around 30 seconds to a minute long, and while the dialogue and voice work is well done for the most part, it leaves the side characters grossly underdeveloped. And the overall story arc is simplistic, predictable and ridiculous and ends abruptly out of the blue.
The missions range from tedious and frustrating tailing missions with unforgiving checkpoints, to killing x amount of enemies, assassinations and naval sections. Each story mission blends into the other, which is in no part helped by the pretty, albeit samey looking open world. The combat in this game is also god awful. Mash y to attack, press a if you see a red exclamation mark above an enemies head, and press b to break an enemies defence. That's it. Its ridiculously superficial. The ship combat is slightly more engaging but quickly becomes repetitive after being forced to farm for resources. Overall I found AC4 boring and soulless and has put me off trying any other games in the series. 4/10.

What’s really striking about the two games in The Rebel Collection is that, like I said up top, unlike ACIII they’ve both aged fairly well. Both Black Flag and Rogue are excellent additions to your Switch library, and they’re well worth the dozens of hours you’ll get out of both.

If you don’t mind encountering several glitches along the way, then you’re sure to have a blast with Assassin’s Creed: Rebel Collection on Switch – particularly with Black Flag which remains one of the best entries in the Assassin’s Creed series.

The Rebel Collection is an all-around enjoyable and if you can understand that these games have some age to them, then I think anybody will find themselves enjoying it. Even those who have grown up with butter-smooth controls.
