This is largely the same as the NES classic Super Mario Bros.. In terms of core gameplay, some enemies and items are in different spots. You can, however, change the screen to your liking; you can increase its size to cover the background on the edges, for example. You can also upload your high score online and change timer speed, among other small bonuses.

The game is probably what you'd expect from the title; an arcade version of Super Mario Bros.. Gameplay is familiar, involving stomping on Goombas, Koopa Troopas, etc. to get to Bowser, defeat him, and rescue Peach. Games are started (and continued should you run out of lives) by "inserting credits" (don't worry, no additional payment required, it's done by pressing a button), which is a charming feature.

If you've played the NES classic, you're not getting much new here. More of the same (akin to the difference between that game and The Lost Levels), but that's not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to Mario platformers, as proven by this release.

Arcade Archives: Vs. Super Mario Bros. is a fantastic way to experience Nintendo's defining 2D platformer in a slightly different light. In the end, if you're a hardcore fan then buying this long-lost gem is a no-brainer.

Super Mario Bros. being playable on a Nintendo system is not particularly surprising, but that it should first appear on Switch in its VS. incarnation is a welcome bonus. The excellent gameplay, catchy music and a large chunk of the levels are still present, but the new stages make for a different feel that muscle-memory won't get you through. Those levels may have since appeared in The Lost Levels, but their inclusion here alongside changes to existing levels (including a different solution to a multi-path puzzle) make for a still enjoyable but tougher alternative way of playing, with highscore chasing also adding to the fun thanks to the online leaderboards. Even if you can play through the regular version of the game in your sleep, VS. Super Mario Bros. is an excellent - and challenging - choice for platforming fans.
