NINTENDO! FIX THIS! This one island deal is an outrage. Can anyone tell me of another game that has ever done this? Sorry but I'm not buying a second switch so that my wife can play this game for like two months and then wait for the next bandwagon game to catch on.

The policy of one island per Switch console is an inexcusable deal breaker for any family with more than one family member, or for that matter for any person wanting to re-play the game for a different experience at a later time without deleting old saves. When you start the game, you're drawn in by the charm of the character designs and the laid back feeling. You aren't pressed for time and can do what you want. I spent my first two weeks catching a wide variety of creatures to fill the museum, creating my own house and trying to make money.

However, I then spent the next two weeks doing the exact same thing.
You need allot of money to progress in this game, so you're going to have to go catch creatures and craft items to sell. Once you upgrade your house you are then presented with another option to upgrade (progress in the game, essentially) so you'll have to go catch creatures and craft items to sell so you can get another upgrade and do the same thing again and again.

This isn't just limited to the main game either, filling out the museum requires you to spend hours catching fish and bugs over and over and finding fossils (you have high chances to keep getting creatures and fossils you've found before).

The character dialogue? repeating. You start to notice the same dialogue being used over and over after about a week or so of playing, and while that may be fine normally this is a game that's supposed to be some sort of long term investment and is praised for its supposed 'small details' and charm, which I found ran out after the first week as the game kept trying to repeat the same tricks over and over to try and impress and engage me. This game is essentially a one trick pony, after the initial 'wow' there's not much left to be impressed by.

Its fun at first but everything about this game screams repetition, its more like a chore than a fun game.

I can't really recommend this game, its not the worst game I've ever played, but its just dreadfully boring.

Bought this game to play with my wife as it is supposed to support local coop. Not only the local coop is a joke as the player who is not the leader basically can't to anything but if you're not the first player to run the game and be the representative you won't get to actually play the game.
Now I still don't have a game to play with my wife as she is the only one who can play it.

Can't actually play the game because I wasn't the first player to play it.
Will need to spend another £300 on a switch to be able to do any of the story.

Bought this for my girlfriend who has really been enjoying it. However, recently we both thought it would be fun for me to make an island on my account too and were dismayed to find out that there is a one island limit per switch.

This is a very questionable design choice and seems borderline predatory as an attempt to pressure families into buying multiple switch consoles.

What I do have a problem with is the game itself, it's way too grindy and doesn't offer me a 'relaxing' experience like others claim. I find myself actually getting stressed more because I can't find the materials I need to proceed, for example, 30 iron nuggets to build the shop. There are 3 stones on my island and not 1 gave me an iron nugget, meaning I have to constantly spend Nook Miles to go to other islands so I can get them, it took me multiple days just to complete that task due to bad RNG. And don't get me started on the 3 plot stuff...6 items per plot, and some of the materials needed for said items I cannot get on my island at all, which means MORE grinding for Nook Miles to travel to other islands for them to potentially not even have the materials I need. I just want to be able to have villagers on my island without having to constantly grind.

I'll give it to Nintendo that the animal residents are adorable. It's why I was dragged to the game in the first place, which looking back was a huge mistake. With all the content it has, I can see why it's being sold for £50, but the gameplay itself doesn't make up for it. If you want a game like Minecraft that has cute, interactive animal villagers and 10x more grinding for materials, then this game is absolutely for you. But sadly, it was not for me at all.

I’ve bought this game for playing solo, and seeing how pretty much everyone enjoys it that way, I thought I would too. And to my disappointment, it was such a chore that it became boring after two weeks of playing.
Some of the aspects that killed the game for me:

    1. Grind. I initially expected the game to be kind of similar to Stardew Valley. There, you were always rewarded for everything: catching new species, donating items to the museum, talking and giving gifts to the villagers (aka getting cutscenes and gifts).
What is the situation like in ACNH? Want to travel to mystery islands (actually a one very cool feature), want some cool hairstyles? You gotta get nook miles. And in order to get them, you’re given the most enjoyable tasks ever imaginable: chop 10 trees, catch 10 bugs, sell 20 weed. It was getting so tedious I wanted to CRY. People actually spend 60$ on this and enjoy it??

Museum is actually really beautiful on the inside, I did not expect it at first. But the sensation wears off real quick, because essentially it’s all this game is about - looks. Nothing rewarding in terms of gameplay.

    2. Villagers. Again, can be pretty, but they all have the same cookie cutter cutter cute and lovely personality. Maybe it’s me who’s got so unlucky, i don’t know. But you can develop even characters like this, but all I got is some copy paste bs monologue about how that one likes to sleep and eat, and that other one likes to lift weights. Amazing.

    3. The time you have to spend to do such routine like buying or selling. Like honestly, do I REALLY need to stop to read greetings every time I walk into the shop, followed by ANOTHER line when I try to talk to them?? To then watch how my character hands them the goods, and they talk pointlessly??
Optimize the menus for god’s sake and stop making everything so slow. You can make immersive game without trying to artificially drag out things like selling, buying and crafting, especially when you’re doing it so frequently...

    4. It was actually partially my fault for not reading about the game enough, but real time synchronization is stupid. You want to build a home, a bridge, or literally anything? Wait for one day. Want to see new clothes? Wait one day. Want to have fun right now? Unlucky for you, wait one day.
I could get behind this idea if it wouldn’t have hindered me from doing what I want when I want. Why can’t I move quickly with the game if I want to? Why is this game forcing one play style on everyone?

I know you can time travel, which I usually do, even though it kinda feels like cheating. And you know why? Because if you do that, it’s extremely apparent that the game relies on that real time gimmick to be interesting. It severely lacks any real content.
I believe you will enjoy the ACNH if you like customizing stuff, because it’s one thing the game is objectively good at.

All in all, I really, REALLY tried to like this game. But you can only catch bugs for so long.

I spent 60 e on the game and also had to buy a memory card to be able to download it. Now it turned out that only one profile can own an island and others are just guests. So now I have one happy kid and one sad. I’m very disappointed at Nintendo. They better fix it. I'm not even given the (bad) option of buying a second copy of the game to open up the option for a 2nd island. This is an awful, awful design decision. I'm in the end game and having the ability to terraform is amazing! I love creating things, and hunting for bugs and fish! I also love visiting friends (outside my own household) islands and snagging fruits I don't have.

But when New horizons released she was eager to let me jump in. I have never played animal crossing, but this was outstandingly a great experience, I fell in love. But I struggled to help her build homes, and wasn't treated the same, nor did I interact with importance with Tom, I felt discriminated against. I soon learned why, with the one island per console, and the founder having all the decision making, really, really, really sucked. I would have loved to then start my own island, or co-run the one we were in. I couldn't choose where buildings went, I couldn't progress, and I couldn't even invite villagers, one of the most important and enjoyable aspects of the entire game! I was stuck, and worst of all... This literally damaged my relationship with my sister. I'm twice her age and I felt we finally found a way to bond, but no, Nintendo turned from a "family connecting" idea, to a "family tearing" nightmare. I absolutely hate it, and I can't play it anymore, and that has led my sister to stop, and now I feel guilty, and everything is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. How could a overly family friendly game turn into a despair-enducing experience. However, it's still a 4 because if you were solo this game is absolutely perfect, but this game is built around socializing and family, and it decided it wanted to ruin both. If you want to play with anymore then a SINGLE person, which is what was frost attractive about the game, then DON'T BUY.

NINTENDO... Please, I beg you to rethink your decision. Make multiple islands where others can found, or make a co-founder system where both share absolutely the SAME privileges.

Now I feel awful because my girlfriend really wanted to play but I was the first one to start up the game. The greed is unreal. I guess Nintendo wants people to have to go out and buy another console. NOT HAPPENING. In fact I'm going back to just sticking with the PS4. I hope Nintendo reconsiders otherwise they've lost a lot of future customers. Oh and for those saying review bombing isn't okay, obviously they are the only ones in their household. The rest of us got screwed and the rating is fair and justified

I thought it was a great game and spent hours and hours building my island up to my Specification, halfway through I have found there is a limit to my features needed to complete it, such as inclines and bridges. I am very angry and after spending so much time and effort to get to this point I honestly just want to put down the game and never play it again.

There is nothing to do with your friends. You cannot build things together. You cannot paint together, decorate together, or even use basic terminal functions when someone is on your island. You can't sell things on a friends island if you are playing too late at night. if someone tries to come to your island they will not be able to if you have a dialog box open. When a person comes everyone involved will have to wait through a lengthy loading screen. If anyone disconnects everyone's progress will be lost. These issues make no sense in today's video game landscape, no other large release has these problems. I want to love this game. It is beautiful. But the actual act of playing the game with my significant other, the reason i bought it, is near unbearable tedium. Expand

I've been obsessed with this game since I started playing a little over a week ago. I'd never even touched my husband's switch before, or another Animal Crossing game, so I had no idea that when he added me as a second player I would basically get to play one tenth of the actual game. It's probably a little dramatic, but I was devastated when I realized that I would never be able to progress the game on my own just because my husband made his account first. I really don't care about buying another console/game to have my own island, but the thought of doing that now after all of the effort/hours I've already put into the game makes me think I'm just going to give it up entirely. I really wish that at the very, very least there had been a warning when setting up an additional player on the game so I could have just bought a second switch before I got so far into it. This is the only problem I've found with the game, but it's a deal breaker to me and apparently a lot of other ACNH players. I've seen quite a few good suggestions of how to fix this, including adding the ability to switch between designated primary players or allowing the data to be transferred to another device via the cloud storage. If you're going to make people buy multiple devices & games, don't pour salt in the wound by wasting their time too. Please warn future players in advance of what to expect as player 2+.

But one person getting creative license over a single island per Switch and not per account? What did you think was going to happen, Nintendo? Peace? Do you all live alone or do you think we all are going to shell out a couple thousand just to keep fights from breaking out over a bridge being erected or a beloved/bemoaned villager being ousted/invited? The game is meant to be a relaxing escape and it is... until the Island Rep breaks out Lloid to build an expensive incline to a cliff that goes nowhere or thinks it'd be hilarious to send Sprinkle packing because she's the villager someone else likes best.

It's a 5 star game. It gets 3 for literally inciting days long fueds. Days. Fix the single island thing, even if it means buying another cartridge or memory card like we did to get around this in previous versions. People will throw $60 at you five times for each family member to have their own control of their own island on the same console if you'd just let them. We'll do it. We clearly love this game franchise.

Already the game is quite addictive in that certain game mechanics "reset" at the start of a new day (such as harvesting and long-duration builds completing). I've not yet visited another island as the cost is still a bit too high. The synced world time is pretty interesting as well as certain things are available based on TOD--I've never played a game like this. To think that there are seasonal elements is quite exciting--can't wait until Halloween!

So far, the cons are the highly irritating character voices that can't be muted; after the initial few minutes I was wishing I could just do away with it. Cycling through the menus is rather tedius.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is a overall solid game but I can’t really bring myself to say that I personally enjoy it. It has its place for people who can tolerate how slow the game is and its repetitive gameplay loop, but I don’t think that it suits me.
The general gameplay loop is slowly upgrading your island, catching creatures to submit to Blathers, visiting new smaller islands, and that’s where it about ends. I never have a great motivation to make my island look nice or to do anything for its inhabitants due to them often feeling robotic or one note caricatures such as this guy is strong, this girl is moody, and that’s their whole personality. It’s worthy to note that your islanders personality rarely play a part in your daily gameplay, the only islanders you interact with frequently (The shoo vendors) have set in stone personalities that don’t factor into anything. So all in all it makes villagers just feel like side attractions/decorations instead of a motivator to continue upgrading your island for you and its inhabitants. To make your island look great you need tons of bells, which turnips become the primary way to farm them later on, which I dislike since they feel so disconnected to actual gameplay. In terms of the other parts of the loop, catching creatures is admittedly tedious but rewarding so I don’t have much to say on that note. But one thing I think everyone can agree on is the major design oversights that honestly I don’t have any idea how they got past play-testing. Crafting one object at a time, a long drawn out arriving cutscene that despawns any creatures near you whenever someone arrives, and more just take a noticeable toll on my enjoyment due to bow frankly annoying they are in this type of game. This isn’t to say that there’s nothing good about this game, the amount of things you can collect, your customizability, multiplayer, and general aesthetic are all things to take into account. The character designs are adorable, and nothing about the game aside from those oversights really frustrates me, but it’s just not my cup of tea. If you’re into those games where you can collect tons of stuff, and are a fan of its slow pace and relaxed nature, I’d say it’s for you. My final rating is a 6/10 which in my terms is a game worth playing if it suits you well.

He was excited to play the game, as my wife and I had played every previous version and had told him how much fun it was. We were all looking forward to playing the game and enjoying watching the island build up and grow. When the day arrived, he was the first to log in and play. My wife and I then created characters and started farming and building our homes. Then, the first major 'milestone' arrived. He started working on the quest, then went out for the day. I decided to log in to my account and help out with his quest. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't. Essentially, I was not the 'main' character, and not allowed to progress the main story line. I was disappointed, to say the least. Although I had put quite a number of hours into the game already and built up my home and character, and didn't want to lose that... I was consoled by the idea that I could always start another island and experience the main storyline that way. After all, the Switch has multiple user accounts, right? Wrong. Apparently I have to buy another game copy AND console if I want to experience the game I paid for in full. Or delete my son's island and start over, which I'm not about to do. This is an incredibly poor design choice on Nintendo’s part. Not allowing separate islands? Or allowing multiple players in a *multiplayer game* to have full access to the game features? Ridiculous. This may be the last Nintendo console I allow in my household. I will certainly be scrutinizing their software with independent reviewers very closely before allowing any future purchases in our household. Expand

Pros: Cute villagers and designs; beautiful environment; relaxing gameplay; relaxing music. Cons: Villager dialogue is repetitive; lack of villager tasks; limited activities to do with friends.

I know nintendo behaves like the apple of the gaming world. But one island per console is ridiculous. Buying multiple games for one console would plain gready, but trying to force you to buy a whole new console to have your own save is taking the “P”. Might be able to stomach it, if nintendo actually brought out proper family sharing

I like it so much, it's a fun game, very reminiscent of the old Animal Crossing games. But, the inability for users of the same switch to have different islands isn’t cool, even above, only the first player on the switch can complete assignments from Tom Nook and other characters. If 2 or more people play on the same switch It become bored for the other players. Thats why i give a 2 to the game

I’m very frustrated at this multiplayer couch co op settings. What a major disappointment.
Why would Nintendo not add split screen or allow others to perform tasks ( pockets, phone, map etc).
Sure the multiplayer online might be fun IF you have a second switch AND a second game otherwise I’d skip this game altogether if looking to play at home with friends.

I bought this game for my 2 daughters cannot believe how bad the experience is for Player 2. Player 2 should be able to have their own island and be able to progress their own story. I regret buying this game

New Horizons only makes me hope for a future AC game with all the great NH has while also fixing all the bad that it has and adding even more to the formula respecting its original purpose. I CAN'T NOT recommend this game when it has given me over 450 hours of play time.

RIPOFF! $60. for a one-person game. Can't even buy and use another. No idea my wife wouldn't get her own experience crafting and controlling development. My gosh, you can have multiple users in Breath of the Wild which is magnitudes more complex. This is easily solvable and simply unforgivable.

I love animal crossing New Horizons so many gameplay features that keeps you engaged for hours on end, the charms and the cuteness of the animals is so heart-warming. After completing the storyline there is sadly little to do but still well worth the experience. Alas 8/10 a great addition to the animal crossing series.

Cute, fun, laid-back time-filler. Bad value proposition, however. Not a great deal of content for the price.

Passing events/occurrences is frustrating. Missing (not being able to experience at all due to time/schedule constraints) meteor showers and more is a bother.

RNG with Redd’s artwork is especially bad.

So I was play enjoying the game but I didn't mean to time travel and now I can't go back to my original file and I don't want to retry the game because I like my villagers and I was wondering if their should be a save file where when you can go back to a old save as in you make a save and a few months of you playing you can go back to that first save but you can't go to your future island?

This game is absolute garbage I can't believe Nintendo of all people somehow messed up animal crossing it takes too long and the controls are like playing Call Of Duty with the resident evil tank controls. Nintendo should look up to Bubsy 3D which has controls that are silky smooth and a story that makes more sense than the kingdom hearts games

I can't believe it... After digging nearly 400 hours into New Leaf on the 3DS, I was patiently awaiting the next iteration on Nintendo's newest console. I was just as excited as everybody else was when the game was first teased and then announced; getting hyped to yet again to be fully immersed in the island life.

It's too bad that this game was such a magnificient disappointment!

I started to play this as soon as I got it as an Easter gift, I started putting in many hours and... something wasn't clicking. Unlike New Leaf, where I would have sleepless nights waiting to enter my village for the next day, this game gave me no such feeling. I also played New Leaf consistently for about three years, yet this game became boring to me after about a month. So what gives?

Firstly, there are a few positive things to praise the game for (although mostly minor in the grand scheme of things). The graphics are gorgeous in the game, and the miniscule details added along with them like Villagers now doing activities is so fun to see! The Soundtrack, while it is inferior in comparison to the wonderful soundtrack of previous Animal Crossing games (Especially New Leaf), is still very nice to hear and I enjoy the songs.

With that out of the way, let's get into the many negative aspects. For starters, there's nothing to do! In New Leaf you could shop on Main Street, do errands and play minigames with villagers, visit the island with friends, go thrifting, enjoy tourneys and other special events, and plenty more! New Horizons is just... bare bones (which is quite applicable for the state of the game as a whole.). Special Characters and many shops have been gutted from the game. As you can see in some other reviews here, the developers also promised frequent updates to the game which would add in more content and even gave me and others the hope that many characters and shops would return... Nope! A year in and the updates have been incredibly lackluster, adding in nothing of note ( Well except for content that was ALREADY IN PREVIOUS GAMES). Holidays and Tourneys are God Awful in New Horizons. For example, in a New Leaf Fishing/Bug Tourney you would be competing with all the villagers in your town on catching the largest bug/fish. Whoever caught the largest by the end of the day would be placed in the top 3 and receive a trophy and maybe even special furniture for their achievements. In New Horizons the tourneys are... You against yourself? They instead opted for simply catching the most bugs/fish in an allotted time limit to get a prize. That takes away the fun and soul of a tourney. You would also think the events would be better but that is also a lie, some events are months long where all you do is the same stuff (cough cough wedding day). Speaking of soul being ripped out, let's talk about the villagers. It used to be fun and charming talking with your villagers everyday in New Leaf. You would slowly build up friendships by visiting each other's houses, completing errands, playing games, etc... In New Horizons this has all been sacrificed and Villagers have been made cute objects to look at instead of actual living villagers... The big gimmick of this game is the customization of your island with terraforming, decorating, and crafting being buffed or newly added features. Crafting becomes monotonous and grindy when you have to grind resources from your island day after day, making none of this new system fun for me at all. Animal Crossing should be a game where I can escape the stresses of life and relax, not have to grind for some stupid iron ore in a rock! Oh and by the way Nintendo, drip feeding through updates is not how you make previous Animal Crossing players want to come back to your game!

It pains me to say it but I really cannot recommend this game. Another reviewer here mentioned how this game is more like a "Happy Home Deluxe" where the game is great with decorating and customization, but forgot everything else that makes Animal Crossing Animal Crossing. If you want a true Animal Crossing experience, pick up a 3DS and play New Leaf, by far the better game. I entered this game thinking this could be one of Nintendo's greatest series, now I'm left shivering at the future of Animal Crossing Games.

It is very tedious to find the iron, stone and clay, the terrain, it becomes very repetitive, after a few days pass, the developers did not know how to implement it well.

    Music is just MEH

AC ACCF and ACNL, has great music, which made identifying the games in an excellent way, especially new leaf, it has the best music of the entire saga, examples are, 1am, 8am, 1pm and 5pm, you can feel it identified.

    In New Horizons?

His music can be meh, bad, mediocre, I say that his music is very repetitive and bad, it does not fit the environment, which in this case is an island, for me, almost all of them are bad , with the exceptions of 12pm, 8pm, 3pm and 5pm, which do give a tropical atmosphere.

Its graphics are good, to be a 2020 game on switch, although in the animal neighbors, many do not convince me, they look a little plastic, cheer them up, but that is forgiven.

    The mechanics are terrible!

In later installments, Nintendo was forgiven, that you could only generate a world, for 4 players, but in new horizons, that is no longer forgiven.

It's just ridiculous, like that one island? If the switch, being a more powerful console than the wii u, can support several maps, that is, do I have to pay another $ 400 for a switch and the game? it is no longer tolerable.

The animal neighbors, they became someone without personality or soul, in new leaf or later installments, your neighbors wanted to meet you, you could see their personality in them, they were like people or friends of yours, that you could do many things, such as invite them to your home .exchange things, play among others.

In new horizons, they just became puppets without personality, you can no longer do that, which later installments offered you, they are careless and you cannot talk to them so much, I limit myself a bit to that.

    updates.

The updates, from 1.0.0 to 1.9.0, could be in the base game, it is an excuse, so that Nintendo can extend the life of the game, in my opinion, the updates themselves are bad, almost not brings nothing new, just a couple of sets and the events, which could be in the base game, as I repeat.

In conclusion, this game is not for that fan of ancient animal crossing, if you are looking for a delivery, that you simulate a life with animals and feel identified, because this game is not for you, play new leaf, city folk and that of game Cube.

but if you want to hang out, this game is for you.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.
