My wife and I bought this game. We both paid for it (half and half).
I just realize I can't contribute with important decisions on the island just because I started to play after my wife and she is the only one that can make important decisions in the island. That sucks, Nintendo, that really sucks! We won't spend on another Nintendo switch + another AC game to play the way we want to! Fix

I just bought it, and I let my brother start the game, and it turns out that with my account I can't get the progress of the game to advance, when it's my Nintendo Switch. Terrible decision that there is a single spokesperson for the island.

I am disappointed in the game, since in that case they would have better allowed one island per profile.

Absolutely unthinkably stupid to limit one island per switch. Asinine. Idiotic.

My kids were excited about all the buzz, they were thrilled to visit the website and see how they could make their own little world. Then they bought it. To have that reality yanked away, I don't think I'm being overly dramatic here, but it was kinda cruel. My kids saved up to buy this game. What in god's

It's lovely to see, in the time of forced quarantine, a game touting itself as a stress relieving, calming, creative time spender, to literally 'yoink' that promise away for everyone but the first household member to log on.

Anyone who has anything to do with this should be ashamed, because you should know, and I don't think I'm the only one: you literally made my kids cry. Not because they're spoiled, or that they can't share, or they won't work together. It's that they saved up for something that was advertised as "something" and got absolutely blindsided by a product that is specifically, maliciously exclusive of their creative interests. It's about having watched hours of people loving the game on youtube, and then the game saying, 'No, you absolutely cannot do what they are doing.'

Of course, the "same island" mode as it exists would be SO MUCH FUN...if it was an option.

If you gave this game a good score because you're the only person playing it...I think you're missing the point. This game is mean to families. It is. There's not really another way to put this.

But hey, whats the point if only one player can truly enjoy it?! Second player cant do anything or make any decisions. The second player is basically a glorified NPC. This needs to be fixed. It feels like a f***ing scam tbh.

I was pretty excited to get into the animal crossing series but this is one of the most boring, lazy, content lacking games I've ever played. I made a Metacritic account just to express how disappointed I am with this game. I've been playing the Animal Crossing series since Wild World on the Nintendo DS. I was SO hyped for this game. I got it the minute it came out on launch day, played for about a month straight aaaaand... I don't play it anymore.

This game is mediocre hence the 5 out of 10 score. Sure the graphics are nice, it runs well and the terraforming is a huge new feature. But Nintendo released an unfinished game. This game does NOT have enough content to justify the £50 I payed at launch day. So many iconic characters are missing. Where's Resetti? Where are Copper and Booker? Most importantly of all where are Rover and Brewster??? Yes I know Rover appeared briefly in the May Day update but honestly it wasn't enough screen time for such an iconic character.

Here's my other gripes with the game:

    - Iconic characters like Rover got shafted but we have to sit through Isabelle's boring dialogue every single day. In this game Isabelle does the morning updates so no more Rover in the spotlight. Isabelle is frankly an extremely annoying character in this game, always repeating the same dialogue about how she found her sock or something. She's supposed to report the news but the devs didn't think for her to perhaps report on the weather or mention which town visitors are on the island. Nah it's more important for us to hear about how she finished her puzzle (nobody cares Isabelle).

    - Speaking of dialogue, the villagers feel soulless compared to other games. What is the point of even talking to them when they repeat the same crap? And they always get annoyed when you talk to them twice in the same day. What a joke.

    - Furniture sets are gone. No more Froggy Chair was bad enough but so many iconic furniture sets just ceased to exist. I like being able to craft but not at the expense of many classic items which fans have loved for a long time. Gracie Grace is missing from the game so now I can't decorate my house with ridiculously expensive dessert shaped furniture - wtf is the point in playing?

    - Speaking of crafting, it is a long and tedious process. Say you want to craft 1 fish bait. You can't just craft 100 at once. Oh no you have to do it one by one. Everything in this game is unnecessarily difficult and even though fans have been begging for quality of life changes for months Nintendo don't care.

    - Events are so bad now. The egg event in previous days was just one day. This time it was a 2 week fiasco where your normal daily activities were interrupted by the stupid eggs. During the egg event you could catch eggs by fishing, from the sky etc. The problem was that this completely ruined fishing as it felt like 80% of what you caught was eggs instead of actual fish. If all events are going to be like this from now on I'm not looking forward to events like Halloween.

    - Town visitors seem to visit certain players over others with some people getting Celeste (who gives rare DIY recipes) every week while other players like myself have never had her on the island despite playing since launch day.

    - Finally, on to the terraforming... It's boring. That's all. It is so tedious and so boring. I don't enjoy the terraforming which is a shame because it's the only thing to do in this game. If it's something you think you may enjoy go ahead, buy the game but ever since I unlocked terraforming my playtime has probably dropped by 80%.

There are so many other gripes I have with this game but these are the ones I had off the top of my head. It seems like Nintendo aims to keep updating the game every few months with the content that should have been included on launch day. Apparently this is to "combat time travel" (also why they set events to 2 weeks so people would have to play during the 2 weeks and wouldn't be able to travel back to events). I don't see why Nintendo had to release such a bare bones game just because some people are triggered by people who play the game differently.

Anyway, maybe in a year when Nintendo has actually added the content that should have been in the game to begin with I'll go back to this game but for now I can't be bothered to dedicate any time to this boring game.

Context is important here as people seem to be dismissing this issue as not important. Co-op and multiplayer is not the issue, as some people might want to play the way it is implemented. The issue is that any other account on the system that plays AFTER the first person to open the game is FORCED to play a lesser experience that happens to be shackled to the multiplayer experience. It is then not an equapl, stand alone playthrough with all the features of one.

A lot of reviews are fair in their scores because they played the full game with no problems on one account. That is fine. But a lot of people have more than one account on their Switch. To say that the opinions on the game by people affected by this are unfounded is frankly ignorant and it doesn't address the core problem.

It's 2020 and we can't have multiple accounts play their own instance of a game? Yes we can, Nintendo has just chosen not to here. For a game that is trying to be a calming community experience, It has only made me feel conned and frustrated and left out because of this.

As someone who is sharing the game with someone in my household, however being the second account to play, I am forced to be an observer to someone elses enjoyment of the game. If you are not the first person to play this game on your Switch you might as well not play it at all as you do not get the full experience. That is unless you buy another switch to have the privilege.

This is a frankly disgusting and pointless choice that only serves to ruin the experience for many people who buy the game and line the pockets of Nintendo. Even the person who played it first feels guilty for playing it, even though they had no control other it.

Be wary before buying this game; unless you play on your own switch, first, on your account from the outset, you will not have the full experience you expected when you bought it. I will be extremely hesitant to buy any future Nintendo games because of this.

On a positive note, the person who first started playing on their account on my Switch says it's a lovely game. Shame I can't play what they're playing.

There is also the fact that parts of your island are completely locked because you don't have any bridges built at the start unlike other games, and it's a while before you build bridges or unlock the vaulting pole. Nintendo also shows their greed in wanting you to buy more Switch consoles, as it is not 1 island per Nintendo Switch user, it's 1 island per Nintendo Switch console. And the only way to get a new or second island is to delete your first. This game also excludes the character of the fan favorite and my personal favorite, Rover. He does not appear on the plane to the island to help you (instead that role is filled by Nook's little scouts), and he doesn't appear in the game at all. My only things to say in defense of this game is that for once the game lets you decide what your villager's appearance is instead of generating it with cryptic questions like the other games (and usually no matter what you answered for the questions, you didn't like how your villager looked). The other thing is that Tom Nook appears to be less greedy and more friendly. He has general interactions the way a peppy villager, or Isabelle, or one of the Ables would instead of constant badgering and pressuring you about money like he does in other games. Expand

The only work around is having the rest of us play multiplayer using her character, but she is still the only one who can complete any of the tasks and advance the game. It's boring and frustrating for the other players. I would return it but they are invested in the island now, but it's creating a lot of conflict. Do not recommend for families. The new crafting system also keeps me coming back to collect more materials. Even with all of this, there's one huge issue that cannot be ignored that many others have complained about.

Animal Crossing fails the most at co-op. The fact that you can only have one island per Switch seems greedy, so that customers go out to buy more switches. Even if you buy another copy of the game, it won't give you another island. That means me and my siblings are forced to live on one island. The leader and follower system can very annoying to deal with, especially if you really want to get things done on your island. The leader retains all of the abilities a regular player would have, but the followers are basically glorified NPCs. The followers can't access their inventory or interact with other residents. Followers can only use their tools and pick things up. When they do pick something up, it goes straight to the recycling bin, for the leader to potentially steal, or for a drawn out sequence where the players have to switch between leaders. It doesn't help that sometimes my siblings sometimes try to cuck me and steal my resources to sell, or for one of them to steal leader from me. It's also annoying that you can shake your controller to change leader. My siblings just shake my hands and steal leader. I'd really like an option to turn that off. I don't get why they locked these features to just one player. It really waters down the experience for me who was excited, since I'll be playing mostly co-op with my siblings.

The biggest flaw with co-op play, the thing that really kills the experience for me, has to be the Island Representative system. There can only be one Island Representative, the person who first opens the game. They are also the only person who is able to progress the story, along with other exclusive benefits like exclusive DIY recipes. That would be fine if there was multiple save files, but the problem is there isn't. The other players that live on the island just have have a way worse experience. I'm not saying it's not fun to play as a villager, I'm just saying you're not getting the full experience. It can still be fun to decorate your house and to complete daily tasks.

I think this game is at its best when playing single-player. Co-op at the moment is terrible and not having extra saves can ruin the experience for many. Also, please keep in mind I don't have access to a single-player save. I'd recommend this game to people to people who have Switches that only they use. This game just isn't made for multiple people to with. Even if my siblings did cooperate with me, the game would still be 6.

This is ridiculous and I have never played a game that does not allow for more than one save file on the same console. Multiplayer sucks. It really makes it hard to enjoy the game when you bought it to play with your partner and the second player is so limited it is boring. It makes sense for children sharing the game with one being too young to make decisions but feels ridiculous and a waste of money for adults to play. And don't get me started on the one island per console problem (eye-roll).

Stardew Valley makes Nintendo look lazy and money-hungry for putting this out and marketing it as multiplayer. The animation is cute though and I really hope Nintendo beefs up multiplayer.

This game is really beautiful and relaxing. The people at Nintendo really put effort into this and it is worth the delay that it gets. Every time you build something it felt like an accomplishment but things like getting material from rocks tree and other needs to take a day to replenish which is disappointing and waiting for a building to be build makes me really impatient all theThis game is really beautiful and relaxing. The people at Nintendo really put effort into this and it is worth the delay that it gets. Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. It may not have won Game of the Year but it'll be the game we all remember from 2020, for sure.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.

It’s full of detail, pretty small things, and surprisingly well working simulations and systems – everything polished in such a way that the player really does care about everything that’s going on. [06/2020, p.40]
