I'll admit. I was gonna give it a 6, but I just couldn't find enough good in it to be a 6. 5 is where it's at. But anyways, this type of game. For a Nintendo game, this isn't half-bad. The designs are nice too, with some nice scenery and stuff. The music is horrible though, and does not fit this game. There are three woods to describe this game. Boring, repetitive, and tedious. The long, repetitive, dialogue is tedious, the music is bland and sounds boring, and the whole game, in general, is indeed, boring. I've give it one thing though. It's visually stunning. You can walk and run with no lag, and browse around. The items also look pretty good, and the bugs and fish look stunning in the museum (once you build it). Considering how I got this on sale though, I can't give it a negative rating. I got it for $30, instead of $60, but if I did get it for $60, I would give it a 3 or 4. At least the museum is visually stunning, and looks nice. At least there's not a lot of lag. The controls are basic. Whatever. I can't think of anything more to say, so I'll leave it here. Overall, it's a 5/10. Pretty mediocre and bland, but does have some stunning graphics, and the museum is kind of cool. But the music is horrible, the dialogue is long and repetitive, and the game is boring. Expand

Nintendo had to be SO **** STUPID. There is only ONE island, PER. ****. SYSTEM. I never got to **** play because I had to **** build on MY SISTERS ISLAND. I liked Nintendo, but they had to just squeeze more money out of the players to buy more switches to use more MORE THAN ONE **** ISLAND.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I got Animal Crossing New Horizons in March.
First it was really interesting and I played almost the whole day, but when I was finished with the main part ( having all the villagers, having all shops/ houses and being happy with how my island turned out) it got boring very quickly. I didn't play for weeks now because I have nothing to do. I have to say that Animal Crossing New Leaf was much better except for the graphics. The villagers were fun and you could to talk to them without them telling u the same few phrases over and over again like in New Horizons. Also it had much more shops and locations like the island with its mini games, the hairdresser and many more. In conclusion I think New Horizons is a fun game but compared to New Leaf it's being left on track.
Also it's bothering me, why couldn't nintendo just take New Leaf upgrade it a little bit and leave it there, bet that would've been outsold too in no time...

It has been over a year and they are JUST NOW adding characters to the game that we have had in almost every other game in the series so far from the beginning. Also with all the updates, and knowing what people are most upset about they have not fixed the issue of one island per switch. It is unrealistic to expect everyone in the household will have their own switch just for this game. It was more reasonable to think that with the 3DS and even then multiple cartrigas got you multiple islands. On the GameCube multiple memory cards meant multiple saves. On the switch it’s one island per switch and everyone who uses that CONSOLE (as much as they want it to also be a handheld, it’s a console) has to live on the same island and only the person who starts the file actually gets any real say in how the island progresses. That makes it so that no one else really gets to enjoy the full game. If you have multiple family members sharing a switch that want to play the full game prepare to be disappointed. This fix would not be hard but they chose to ignore the issue in the hopes maybe people will buy more consoles? The new update coming is so large they definitely could have made this part of it and they didn’t. Now that they finally “finished” the game they released too early over a year later they are starting to release paid dlc? Not surprised they are mostly concerned with money and not their actual fan base. Expand

I bought the game for me and my 6 year old daughter to play separately, occasionally together with co-op. One save file per game is not ideal whatsoever. Animal crossing is in everyway except for graphical fidelity a step down from new leaf.
After the tutorial there is no real progression and it really shines a light on how little there is to do in the game. You can go grind ingredients for recipes you dont have, listen to the 4 possible repeating sentences your villagers can say, or catch bugs/fish. Why is talking to your villagers such a bore? talking to them brings up a submenu basically asking "are you sure you want to listen to the repeated dialogue again?". In new leaf, you could talk to villagers for a long time before they started repeating themselves, i really dont know why it is so limited here, since its such a crucial aspect of the game.

With these main gripes clear, i would like to say that the game isnt all bad, designing your island and home is fun. Fishing is also fun, filling up your museum is the replacement for any progression the game otherwise lacks.

Overall this is a clear downgrade and the praise the game has gotten (perhaps because of release timing and new players) is not promising. I would recommend new leaf over this every day of the week, and you'll save 30 euro!

    What a shame.

Parents. Do NOT buy this game. It’s a scam to get you to buy more than one Switch. It creates non-stop fights between siblings trying to play on their own profiles and is not worth the headache.

This game is awful. The primary resident is the only one who can do anything. All the secondary players are stuck doing the most mundane tasks until the primary player does certain stuff. I bought it for myself but let my young daughter start the game first. Now I’m stuck waiting for her to even find the inclination to complete tasks. Worst game I have ever played.

Animal Crossing New Horizons emphasizes the customization aspect of the experience more than ever before, giving players the option to place indoor furniture outside as well, but most importantly the power to shape the island's landscape to create rivers, cliffs or change the appearance of specific ground tiles. This greatly enchances the decor possibilities, as well as providing much more furniture and clothing options than New Leaf. Even with this, New Leaf offered many more shops and a greater sense of progression with time, whereas New Horizons's town feels stale and empty with only a couple of shops and almost no upgrades. Compounding this problem are villagers, offering an embarassingly low amount of lines of dialogue that start repeating themselves after mere weeks. Furthermore, their personalities have been simplified and infantilized, leaving most interactions feeling artificial. The new crafting mechanic tries to add some flavor to the acquiring of items and furniture through resource management, but its great potential isn't explored nearly enough as it ends up being more of an annoyance, with tools breaking too often. With all these downgrades, uncertain new mechanics and the usual repetitive nature of Animal Crossing's core activities, New Horizons ends up being little more than a visually pleasing but hollow display of aesthetics and virtual possessions.

Very upset that Nintendo took a page out of EA’s book. Very disappointed that only the first user per switch to open the game has full control of the SINGLE island on the switch. Such a money grab. Just allow everyone to have their own separate game and island.

I don't want to review bomb a game, but I do want to voice my opinion. This game is fantastic and I even enjoy the one island with multiple people (it should be an option but that's how I intended to play it anyway) but the fact the first person has the entire control of the island is egregious. I bought it and let my roommate play it first while I finished up work and by the next day I loved the town already at which point I discover (which had not been mentioned anywhere prior to the games release) that he had all the control in perpetuity and there is nothing I can do about it. Now I'm five days in and not going to delete it but oh my god please Nintendo, let us at least switch the island representative if not let everyone spruce up the town. And while you're at it let everyone have there own island to keep that dream alive for the rest of the reviewers here.

PS. I agree with the other people that mentioned it's odd none of the official reviewers really mentioned this.

However, in the midst of all the controversy, people seem to forget that this problem doesn't even affect everyone, and that there is a stellar game past this one issue. I would have rated this game 9/10 for its slow start and lack of camera freedom, but I'm rating it a 10/10 to counterbalance all the reviews that forget to actually review the game and its merit rather than a single one of its flaws. I do not believe that a game so fun, heart-warming, charming, and immersive should receive such a low user rating solely because it doesn't specifically tailor to your needs. I can acknowledge the problem, and sure it really sucks, but it isn't representative of literally everything else about this game. In my mind, this game is a near masterpiece and I cannot wait to continue playing it. If you have multiple people that want to play on the same console, I acknowledge that your experience will be hindered due to Nintendo's admittedly greedy policies. However, Animal Crossing: New Horizons as a game, as a social experience, and as a Switch title, deserves much more than what the user score would initially lead you to believe.

And that doesn't even touch on the multiplayer nonsense. You're limited to one island per console, so player two doesn't get a full experience. Player 1 controls the island, every other player is just a permanent visitor with very little control. If I hadn't started the game the same day as my girlfriend and waited a week or so to start playing, I'd be dropped in a "deserted island" full of houses, people, and businesses.

Don't bother buying unless you plan to be the only one playing.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique.
