Ive seen a lot of these reviews saying, why is there only one island per switch. This was told to us way before the release, another thing, Anyone reading this debating whether or not to get it, please take the editors review more serious than these ones, as theres a group of Facebook switch members downrating the game on purpose, because they want another game to be higher rated :)

Player 2, if you are coming into the game expecting that you'll be able to do so so much, you wont. Just like player 1, they had to slowly and painstakingly put time into the game to get to the points you're complaining about.

I understand the one island per switch, but there's two reasons for this.
First, an island takes up a significant amount of space on your switch. With the addition of progression and adding items to your inventory, and your museum and encyclopedia, that all adds up. Then imagine every user on a switch, 8 users with their own individual islands, on top of that per user, 7 additional houses per shared island. That's a grand total of 8 unique islands, and 64 unique players. That amount of data adds up, quickly.

Secondly, adding onto the data situation. The game allows 8 users total on an island. If you're playing online, the max is 8 on your island total. Given the switch has a total of 8 users, its the best choice to make. One island per switch, one player per user.

To review bomb a game means you aren't taking time to understand and come to terms why the game is built like this.

Overall, in my opinion, the game is a 10. With future DLC, it'll bump it to an 11.

Kinda going off on Pokémon so I’ll get back to animal crossing. I love all of the new characters and improved quality of life additions. I know there's been a lot of criticism of only one island per console, but I honestly LOVE the concept of sharing an island on the console. It makes the island feel more alive and is true to real life, that you're not the only one in the world.

In previous games, it would feel like you are the only character who really matters. Animals would hardly interact with each other or their environments and New Horizons is a breath of fresh air in that department. It is hard to find a time when the animals won't be doing something, whether it's talking to each other, going fishing, or even reading a book. To me, this adds a much better feeling of connectedness between everything on the island. Multiplayer lends itself to getting stale pretty quickly right now, but I don't see that as a criticism that detracts significantly from the overall experience of the game. What you get from this game is a relaxing experience that stands on its own as one of the best in the series. Expand

    Pros:
The amount of detail put into it. For example, the museum, with its hundreds of fossils, fish and bugs.
There is so much to do, you’ll almost never get bored. There are tons of daily activities you do, and the game constantly encourages you to get that 5 star island rating. The seasonal events are mostly very fun(except for bunny day). There were only one or two moments around the end of the 130 hours I’ve played that I had nothing to do, but the next day when all resources re-spawn, you can do your daily chores, meet special characters, and do much more to try and improve your island. The sense of progression, and the feeling that everything on your island was made by you, feels great and rewarding. The online is pretty decent, and I like that you have a best friends list so that your best friends can help you and interact with your island more than strangers.

    Cons:

The one island per console limitation is frustrating, since I tried playing with my friends locally, and it was very chaotic and confusing. If you’re buying this to play as a family, I would still recommend it, but only if everyone gets along well, and likes to work together. Some tasks in the game are a bit annoying to do, and the game starts off very slowly since to actually start the actual game and finish the prologue(which is everything before you get the upgraded resident services building), takes 5-6 days.

Overall this is a great game that lived up to its hype, but for families who want to play together, the one island per console limitation is a huge turnoff. 9/10

For all of you complaining about the single-console multiplayer experience, I have some rhetorical questions below.

For the complaints about one villager making all the story driven decisions: If you play this game as a family, does everyone in the family make all the real-life decisions or is it just the adults? Does everyone pay for the bills, mortgage, decide where the kids go to school? This game is a social simulator.

For those complaining that you have to wait for the main villager to progress so you can enjoy the island as the second player: Do you not play together? Do you all not enjoy real life together and usually make decisions together? if you are an adult with kids, does the adult make most of the decisions or do the kids? This game is a social simulator.

I understand the Nintendo Switch is very popular and there are many more new players to the Animal Crossing franchise. These complaints are mostly from new players to the series because previous installments of Animal Crossing are similar, i.e., New Leaf. If you played New Leaf and have complained on this site, not sure what you were thinking, and I can't help you.

In conclusion, If you want an adventure game where you share one console but have separate experiences, I recommend The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Because that's what you all are complaining about, Animal crossing is not Breath of the Wild. All together now, this is a SOCIAL SIMULATOR!

People are giving this a zero just because they are mad that they can't have more than one island! This game is one of the best switch games ever made. If the people weren't so passionate about this game..they wouldn't be on here giving it a zero...but a zero is rediculous!!

Second, the new leaf had no Co-op, no Animal crossing game up to this point had no one console Co-op, so at least it is a thing? Animal crossing is fun either way and honestly, all the stuff that you can do as the first player does not matter. Yes, I know that that is not a valid argument but still, it's not as big of a deal as people make it out to be Expand

This game is great and people are salty you can only have one island per console. I will take a point off because there isn’t much to do in the late game but otherwise it is everything you’d come to expect from a modern animal crossing game.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons joins titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a system seller. This isn’t just a must-have title; it’s a reason to buy a Nintendo Switch.

I went into this game somewhat blind. I’d seen some of the trailers, but this was my first time playing and owning an Animal Crossing game. Additionally, the simulation genre just isn’t my cup of tea. The only other life simulator I’d dabbled in was Stardew Valley(another great game).
However, from the opening minutes, I knew this game would be special. It’s probably the most relaxing game I’ve ever played. After playing New Horizons and more recently, some excellent survival horror titles(Resident Evil 2 and 7), I’ve realized you don’t need fast paced action to make a game enjoyable. However, take that into consideration before purchasing/playing this game. It’s very slow paced and unfortunately, there is some unnecessary tedium. It would go a long way if a feature was added to craft sets of an item instead of crafting them individually(Tip: spam the A-button while crafting to speed up the process). Tool durability is also an unnecessary annoyance. Weapons durability suits a game like Breath of the Wild much better. It lets you experiment with the sandbox and make full use of all your items. That isn’t the case in new horizons. Another minor gripe is playing with multiple accounts. You can only have one island per system. This wasn’t an issue for me since I’m the only one who plays my Switch, but it’s something to keep in mind if you have young children, friends, a spouse/partner, or anyone else who wants their own island.
Like I previously mentioned, this is an extremely slow paced game. Some Players used “time traveling” to speed up the game, but I don’t recommend that. I suggest you play how the developers intended.
With my (mostly)minor gripes out of the way, let’s talk positives. First of all, this game is absolutely gorgeous. It may not quite reach Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, or Mario Kart 8 levels of beauty, but I’d still put it in the top ten best looking games on the system. The art style is amazing, the lighting is top tier, and it ran at a solid 30 frames-per-second with no drops or stuttering from what I noticed. Sound design is as relaxing as it could be. The music is beautiful as well, although it might get on some players’ nerves during extended play sessions, especially before town hall is built.
In terms of strength in gameplay, I’ve never felt this much freedom in many other games. However, if I had to pinpoint my favorite aspect, it was probably collecting bugs, fossils, fish, and other sea creatures, and donating them to the museum. It was always fun having friends visit my island and showing off all of the rare catches I’d obtained. This was one of the few games where I displayed audible excitement whenever I caught a whale shark, sunfish, or oarfish for the first time.
More than many other games, New Horizons displays progress in a visual sense, rather than experience points, cool weapons, or armor. Your island will start out messy and overgrown with weeds and unwanted trees, but as the game moves forward, you’ll unlock more villagers(and their respective houses), shops, and items to put on display. There are plenty of mindblowing islands on display on the internet, that even I(someone who played for more than 150 hours) couldn’t begin to think of. It truly is your experience, and everyone’s will be different.
If I had to point out one last gripe I had with the game, it would be updates. This review is being written almost 1 ½ years after launch, and although Nintendo has been consistently updating the game, it has lost a bit of longevity, but that’s only because I played so frequently at the beginning of the pandemic and I possibly could’ve been burnt out on it. You’ll get plenty of hours out of the game, it’s just after this many, there isn’t as much of a reason to pick the game back up.
Despite the minor issues I have with the game, I think this is a game anyone can enjoy. If you only like fast paced action, you should still give this one a try. I did, and I’ve loved nearly every minute.

I like the progress of the "story" is provides, and the progression of the island over time. If I were going to complain about a missing feature though, is the fact that multi-select is not a thing when it comes to putting stuff away in your home storage. Other than that, the game feels very well done in spite of all the negative reviews it has.

I feel like Nintendo will fix this just to mitigate the number of complaints people are throwing at them. But this won't stop people from attacking it from base release...

Right at the start of the worldwide pandemic, ACNH released and allowed us to enjoy a virtual life while being forced to stay indoors.
A simple groundwork of starting off on a isolated paradise island; You are tasked by Tom Nook to help develop your island to a livable home that people will want to come visit and live at. Finding all sorts of villagers along the way to come move to your island. There is almost 400 different villagers you can find that range in personalities and looks. Try to be nice to the non kawaii ones. They have feelings too. Besides Shari.
A game that never really "ends" I was debating on when to write a review but I have achieved a 5 Star Rating Island and now have began to try and catalog all items in the game. There have been a couple updates and each one adds in something new to experience. This game is a enjoyable work of art that can easily be viewed as a stress relief. It also holds a special place for me as me and my girlfriend like to play it together and hold little special dates when we have the time.
    Well done Nintendo.

However, the longer you play, the more you realize that - in comparison to Animal Crossing games in the past - there's really not much to do/not much content in the game.

For any other game, being enjoyable for 80 hours would be amazing, but Animal Crossing has always been designed to be a game which can be enjoyed essentially for as many years as you want. But there's just not enough to do in New Horizons - a ridiculous amount has been cut from previous games, with not enough new things added to make up for it. I imagine Nintendo's plan is to add these things back as free content updates, which is understandable from their perspective as it will keep people playing the game, but there's just not enough content in the base game to keep the game feeling fun and not like a chore to play everyday. Additionally, the villagers have been watered down so much that dialogue is repeated almost constantly, and the characters barely have any personality anymore.

However, the game still gets a 8/10 from me, because for the first 80 hours or so it's the most fun I've had with a game in such a long time!

Only thing that seriously annoys me are the long dialogues which can be a little painful if you have to click through the same exact dialogue for the 14-th time.

Very solid Animal Crossing experience! Gotta love all the new customization options. That said the game isn't flawless, like how it feels to have taken away some things from earlier games(Like multiple upgrades of the Nook's Cranny, now there's just one), or releasing holidays only as patches, which might be a bit annoying to people with limited internet connections.

On another note though, I really hate how certain idiotic pseudo fans harrassed the localization/development team of the game into removing any references to your character's gender in english localization. Hopefully they stop giving in to them, and instead listen to actual fans who play the game, rather than scum who think video games should be used to propagate their political agendas.

I put in the effort to unlock terraforming and then the game becomes a brand new game. I initially decided to spread villagers houses all over the island, but now I'm in the process of reshaping my entire island, with a residential area, a town business district, flowery parks with a little lake, a big camping lake, a forest full of waterfalls, and I also placed my house far away from the town in the hills and I want to make it bigger and better furnished. Basically, once you find the motivation to make a great and beautiful island to your tastes, you become hooked and it's a very soothing game. It draws you in like no other game did for me.

Of course, the game is not perfect. I wish Nintendo would bring some much needed quality of life improvements, such as bulk crafting, bulk buying, being able to craft in your house with items stored in your house and not only those stored in your pockets. Also, skipping already seen dialogues. It's currently a game of patience to suffer through Blathers' interminable blabber when you just want to identify and donate a fossil. And that, every time ! I wonder if this is done by design or if Nintendo just doesn't bother making player's lives easier. Bottom line, it is annoying that Nintendo doesn't address those problems, but they don't prevent the enjoyment of the game, far from it.

I'm not playing online so I can't comment on online issues. Also, concerning the one island per console thing, let me just say that I absolutely don't approve of Nintendo's decision to allow only one island per console instead of one island per profile. This seems totally arbitrary and anti-consumer. I am personally not concerned by this and I enjoy the game immensely, I think it is deserving of a 9/10. But I can understand the frustration of people sharing a Switch and wanting to both play the game.

I will say, I love animal crossing. I've been playing since the gamecube version and have always loved the charm of having a little town you can escape to. The anthropomorphic animals that become your friends is always welcome in my home and New Horizons delivers on the original concept better than ever before. I've heard critics call this iteration the "Breath of the Wild" of Animal Crossing. I can agree. Never before has there been this much customizability and control of your village. Let me start with some of the positives. First, let me talk about some quality of life improvements that aren't commonly talked about. Your villagers never leave in this game unless you prompt them to leave. This is amazing. Especially from the perspective of someone who likes to play the markets. There is an intrinsic value placed on certain villagers depending on how in-demand they are. In previous games, they would move out unprompted and there was nothing you could do to get them back short of buying their respective amiibo cards. Next, the crafting system is just wonderful and plays well in the new improved atmosphere of New Horizons. It adds a bit of whimsy and character to a series already chock full of the stuff. Now some negatives. As people can see by the review score, you're locked into one island per switch. Which isn't that crazy considering that has been the take of Animal Crossing historically. The biggest thing that knocks it down from being a perfect game for me is the fact that the content wasn't all there upon release. Animal crossing requires long-term dedication for hours a day (within the first few months of this game I have over 300+ hours on my save) and the game can start to feel a little stale by the time a new content update is released. While the charm and whimsy certainly make-up for this fact. There's too many triple-A releases coming out to justify the enormous dedication it takes to do everything you want in this game. All-in-all, it's an excellent experience and if you own a switch, this is a must-have. Expand

One thing that keeps bugging me about this game is the lack of character development between the player of the game and his neighbours. In older Animal Crossing games, your animal neighbours were strangers, and as strangers would act, they wouldn't instantly like you or be instantly gratuitous towards you. This made them personified in a way, they were more characteristic and the bond you formed with them felt more real. However, in this game, although the villagers are more expressive and DO more natural things, they FEEL almost robotic in the ways they act towards you, they say the same things, they feel the same way. It doesn't feel like they are truly happy when they are, or when they're angry, or when they're sad. But, even with that in mind, this game is still an amazing experience

If you feel you want the full control of the game, and want to spend a lot of time on it, you should buy a switch for it. For me, although I'm not the main player, it does not ruin my game experience, and it even makes me feel easier. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. It may not have won Game of the Year but it'll be the game we all remember from 2020, for sure.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.

It’s full of detail, pretty small things, and surprisingly well working simulations and systems – everything polished in such a way that the player really does care about everything that’s going on. [06/2020, p.40]
