And (this is more a switch complaint) if a user wants to invite a friend to play, that user needs their own nintendo online subscription. I can't just buy an individual plan for my console, I have to buy a damned family plan... for one console. All of the issues could be trivially fixed, but doing it this way was a deliberate design choice. It pisses me off. Expand

If you are the first person you get to experience everything the game has to offer. There isn't anything you don't have access to. You can get new villagers, Build stores, paths, bridges, and even change the landscape to truly make the island yours.

If you are the second person to play on the console, you get to experience one aspect of Animal Crossing. You get to make a cool house. That's it. You cannot get new villagers to the island and you can't build bridges or paths. You might as well be playing as another Animal who takes up residence on the island. It isn't your island, you are just a guest.

The fact that Nintendo consciously made the decision to force households to buy multiple consoles if everyone in the household wants to experience all this new game has to offer shows exactly how greedy the company has gotten.

Yes I am fully aware that, as a company, they want to pull in as much profit as possible, but all this decision has done is made consumers angry and against the idea of giving them more money to feed their greed.

Great Job creating a wonderful game and ruining it with your greed Nintendo.

This game doesn't deserve its high review score as it is unplayable for anyone with more than one user per system.

A Family member started playing the game before me and is therefor by default the main account. Everyone else, including me, is just a simple resident with a lot of handicaps compared to the main account.
This is a game about developing your own town on a deserted island yet everyone except the main account practically has NO SAY IN HOW THE ISLAND SHOULD BE DEVELOPED.
Therefor the game is unplayable and absolutely deserves zero points.
This might have been a fun game IF I HAD THE CHANCE TO ACTUALLY EXPERIENCE THE GAME.
Go to hell Nintendo. I'm so sad and angry and disappointed. There isn't even a way to export a save file so I can't even throw everyone else off the island and start over.

There's clearly a decent game in there but it's completely ruined by a clumsy local multiplayer system that involves one player being the 'leader' and the other player being utterly worthless. The game allows you to switch leader on the fly but the whole thing just becomes a confusing mess. "Who is the leader? Oh, you are. Let's switch so I can pick up this item. Okay. Now let's switch back so can open my inventory and give you this other item. Okay, you've picked it up. No, wait, you weren't the leader. That item's now been sent to the chest by Tom Nook for no apparent reason. Right, well we'll have to waste time heading back over there in a minute. But first I want to do some stuff at my house. I'll need to be leader for that and you'll need to sit and wait for a few minutes doing nothing. You know what, just forget it actually... This isn't fun."

The worst part is that this is clearly all in place as a ploy to get you to buy a second Switch and two copies of the game. The whole thing stinks of greed and I've lost a ton of respect for Nintendo as a result of this.

If you're playing on your own and you're into these kind of games then there's probably a good time to be had. If your main reason for buying the game is to play locally with a friend or partner then don't waste your money.

For how expensive the switch and the Nintendo online account and the game was not acceptable seriously this should allow two or three or four kids to play at the same time.

Additional players are limited to what “player 1” has achieved, and only player 1 can advance gameplay by achieving goals to upgrade Nook’s shop or the museum. Additional players also do not get to invite new animal residents or choose where to build houses and buildings, nor do they have access to the same resources and quests as player 1. At this point, I only play out of obligation and I'm astonished with how they released this in the state that it's in. It is abundantly clear that New Horizons was released in an unfinished state, seeing as there are straight up omissions of features and items that were in New Leaf, and plenty of rookie mistakes that seriously should've been spotted in the testing phase but were left unfixed. Such as the lack of bulk crafting, ability to take materials from storage while crafting, the list goes on.

When there is a fanmade video that shows the kind of QoL changes that could be in this game, you know that the devs did not take the time to fine-tune the game before release. I'm aware a lot of people are glad the game is out with current world events happening as of now, but that should never excuse that the game has problems that should be addressed and that the players should at least be notified that there will be some kind of QoL update down the line. Instead, they go and just screw with the bug spawn rates, just making it harder for people to catch them for no good reason; and even go around and heavily reduce the interest rate to only a maximum of 9,999 bells. Something which was not needed in the slightest and it's an enigma of how they thought that was okay to even consider.

Not to mention the multiplayer is a complete joke when sharing a console with others and online multiplayer is just as bad with mounds of text form Orville to just connect online and even then, Nintendo's netcode is still just as lousy as always.

All in all, Animal Crossing New Horizons is a game that has massive potential, but is held back by a tidal wave of problems and lack of QoL from releasing unfinished. As such, this is the worst game in the series, and I cannot in good faith recommend this game which sucks coming from someone who adores this series and just wants to see the best for it and this new entry. Hopefully, later updates address and fix the myriad of problems and turn New Horizons into the worthy entry that it should be.

I cleaned up my island and did significant upgrades in three days. After that, and even during, there is little to do. There are lots of tiny goals to knock out, but to minuscule reward. Grinding towards more upgrades feels pointless because the game starts with little to do, then you get a few upgrades. Is there more to do now? No. More to buy, maybe, but no injection of more activities. Just more fishing and shaking trees. Grind for more upgrades. Is there more to do, now? Not really. You can spend an extra 30 seconds a day now digging up fossils. That all.

It's not really worth talking about. Or playing. Feels super lonely, and flying to others' islands to fish next to them doesn't make it better.

    Really disappointing.

My youngest daughter is the primary island owner......and I have played with her as a visitor. I am here to say...that the experience between the primary owner and the visitors is vastly different. Visitors are essentially drones for the primary. There's no joy to be had because there's none of the feeling for working for something you consider "yours". And therein lies the rub, friends and neighbors. In terms of a gaming experience to be shared with others....this game is crap. But, in terms of playing the game for one's personal experience of personalizing your island and interacting with AI's.....this game is pure gold. In as such.....to require families to have to BUY A WHOLE NEW SWITCH GAMING CONSOLE......AND...TO HAVE TO BUY A WHOLE NEW GAME CARTRIDGE ITSELF TO PLAY A SEPARATE GAME SAVE WITH A NEW ISLAND......IS ABSOLUTELY A DISGUSTING MONEY GRAB ON NINTENDO'S PART! There is no other way to interpret this maneuver by Nintendo. It's inexcusable and its egregious enough of a ploy to drag this reviewer's review score alllllllll the way down.

There are times when coercive publisher behavior....consumer ransom, so to speak.....is so repulsive that outcry is the only way to change that behavior. It happened to EA with Battlefront ii. It's not going to happen to AC:NH, though I know. Nintendo is too impeachable to the millions and millions of fans. They can do no wrong. Still....there are some here who've been courageous enough to trash the score for trashy behavior. Kudos to you.....you know who you are.

I loved the time I spent with this game. Now realizing that after all this time I spent, everything I’ve earned and unlocked along the way was truly for nothing. And it makes me angry. At this point it would be unfathomable to delete everyone’s save data and start over. I’ve come so far and done so much. I’ve got some rare items, crossbred many colours of flowers, unlocked just about every item currently available in Nooks Shop...and now here I am. Faced with a decision I shouldn’t have to make. Do I delete all this work and start over...or do I just quit?
Nintendo has shown great disrespect to its customers with their one island decision. It may be the shadiest thing I’ve ever fallen for in terms of video games. I can’t believe they ruined it with this decision. I haven’t enjoyed a game this much in YEARS but...yeah they had to find a way to absolutely kill it for some reason.
Very disturbing decision by Nintendo and hopefully not a sign of things to come. It’s sad. It really is. Was it greed that prompted this decision? Idk, do they actually think people the world over would buy a second Switch so they could have their own island? That’s just not in cards for many people. Could I? This game is tricky to rate. 8/10 if you are the first player on your island and resident rep. But if you aren’t, then you are nothing more than a glorified NPC. You can’t progress your island whatsoever and with only one island allowed per switch you have no possible way of actually playing the game.

I'd never played an animal crossing game, and everyone I knew raved about them so I thought, hey, we're under lockdown, a nice relaxing game is perfect... I personally don't have a problem with the one island per console as I'm the sole user.

    Pros:
It's quirky and cute and engaging and there are so many things to make.
The time of year events are a nice touch, but could be more interesting

    Cons:
Most DIY items, shopping items etc are the equivalent of the amazon deals page; a few nice items but 95% plastic tat. I understand the aim of the game is to fill your island with consumer goods to raise it's 'rating' but it really just feels like someone raided the unity asset store for free models; very few things are aesthetically pleasing.

    Interactions, menus, inventory etc feel unintuitive (to me);
    i) 'drop' should not be the top item on the inventory menu.
ii) I want to be able to shake a tree for fruit even if I'm holding a spade without it trying to (ineffectively) dig up the tree.
iii) Many sub menu interactions kick you out of the whole menu/inventory after doing one thing, e.g. unequip a hat, and if you want to do anything else (unequip more etc) back into the inventory you go.

Dialogs/Messageboxes are WAY too verbose and always on; most games with chat dialog may have a verbose version the first time, and then a terse version from then on, not AC. Every time you talk to a shop keeper you get the whole 4 or 5 dialog box spiel you have to click through (even pressing b to speed things up it's still a chore), want to post a few presents to friends? *Every* one requires you to read 'hmmm, it looks like they have a postcard rack, maybe I could...' - 'who do you want to send it to?' - 'connecting to the internet' -etc, and when you're done, do you go back to the previous menu for more? No, you're kicked out to start again... 'hmmm, it looks like...'
This coupled with the above items means for example it takes *minutes* to buy one of each of the few flowers on sale from the flower merchant; click through spiel, choose item, buy, watch unnecessary animation of bells being handed over and flower being handed back, click another message, repeat. We need multi-select to buy (like fossil assessment), we need shopkeepers to have a 'I've heard this message 300 times, please just say hello and go straight to the wares' mode.
Some shops even force you to click out of a dialog just to exit the shop!

The island-visitor restrictions are odd, and strikes me (as a software developer for over 20 years) as a quick workaround rather than solve an underlying issue:
Why do we need to close dialogs when someone is visiting?
Why do we need to watch a (needlessly long, honestly, what other games take so long for people to join?) progress animation as they 'fly in'
Why can I not place items when someone is there?
Why can I not talk to a shopkeeper when a visitor is in the changing room.
All these things make the friends/visitor mechanism stilted, janky and, like everything else, a chore

Every time you catch or make something you have to watch a little 'look what I caught/made' animation, with a terrible pun, of which there is only one per item: 'I caught a sea bass, oh no it's at least a C plus' (I have stopped fishing simply because of these, and of course, you have to click again, to dismiss it.
With crafting, each item (and YOU CAN ONLY MAKE ONE AT A TIME) has an animation too (while you can speed up the crafting time, basically, you have to sit there mashing a button to make a number of the same items

All of which could be avoided if they weren't pretty much the only thing to do in the game... like, any kind of quests apart from help Gulliver find his bits and help Whisp find his bits.

Basically the only thing to do is fish, craft, catch bugs, shop and those things take 5x as much time and 5x as many button clicks as they need to (even keeping the immersive chatty nature some might like) and all interactions are repetitive, there's no variation.
None of the game-play is fluid, very little is intuitive and that 'what's the point' feeling creeps in very quickly.

If you want crafting, smooth multi-play, adventure etc... Get portal knights, AC did not get QA tested with users playing for a length of time.

It’s like a full war, especially how resources can only be collected ONCE per day. Now, I agree that’s perfectly balanced and makes sense, but not when there’s siblings fighting over who gets the rocks or fruit or fossils. This whole thing, wouldn’t even be the worst thing ever, if everyone had the power of the resident representative! Like, my sister managed to log on first, and she barely even plays! But she plays enough that she won’t let me take over her account. So if I want to move a building, make a bridge, etc, I have to drop money, save, go on her account, build the thing, save, then go back on my account. It’s ridiculous! Why can’t the other players make bridges inclines layout changes etc. Not to mention only the main user can do the tasks to try to get K.K. on the island. I just realize I can't contribute with important decisions on the island just because I started to play after my wife and she is the only one that can make important decisions in the island. That sucks, Nintendo, that really sucks! We won't spend on another Nintendo switch + another AC game to play the way we want to! Fix

I just bought it, and I let my brother start the game, and it turns out that with my account I can't get the progress of the game to advance, when it's my Nintendo Switch. Terrible decision that there is a single spokesperson for the island.

I am disappointed in the game, since in that case they would have better allowed one island per profile.

Absolutely unthinkably stupid to limit one island per switch. Asinine. Idiotic.

My kids were excited about all the buzz, they were thrilled to visit the website and see how they could make their own little world. Then they bought it. To have that reality yanked away, I don't think I'm being overly dramatic here, but it was kinda cruel. My kids saved up to buy this game. What in god's

It's lovely to see, in the time of forced quarantine, a game touting itself as a stress relieving, calming, creative time spender, to literally 'yoink' that promise away for everyone but the first household member to log on.

Anyone who has anything to do with this should be ashamed, because you should know, and I don't think I'm the only one: you literally made my kids cry. Not because they're spoiled, or that they can't share, or they won't work together. It's that they saved up for something that was advertised as "something" and got absolutely blindsided by a product that is specifically, maliciously exclusive of their creative interests. It's about having watched hours of people loving the game on youtube, and then the game saying, 'No, you absolutely cannot do what they are doing.'

Of course, the "same island" mode as it exists would be SO MUCH FUN...if it was an option.

If you gave this game a good score because you're the only person playing it...I think you're missing the point. This game is mean to families. It is. There's not really another way to put this.

But hey, whats the point if only one player can truly enjoy it?! Second player cant do anything or make any decisions. The second player is basically a glorified NPC. This needs to be fixed. It feels like a f***ing scam tbh.

The npc's are boring, isabelle is nothing more then a mold for a cute character and nothing more, the other villagers only have 2 or 3 lines when you talk to them and the UI is so clunky it takes like 6 minutes for me to leave somebody's island, go grab an item from storage, and then come back. I made a Metacritic account just to express how disappointed I am with this game. I've been playing the Animal Crossing series since Wild World on the Nintendo DS. I was SO hyped for this game. I got it the minute it came out on launch day, played for about a month straight aaaaand... I don't play it anymore.

This game is mediocre hence the 5 out of 10 score. Sure the graphics are nice, it runs well and the terraforming is a huge new feature. But Nintendo released an unfinished game. This game does NOT have enough content to justify the £50 I payed at launch day. So many iconic characters are missing. Where's Resetti? Where are Copper and Booker? Most importantly of all where are Rover and Brewster??? Yes I know Rover appeared briefly in the May Day update but honestly it wasn't enough screen time for such an iconic character.

Here's my other gripes with the game:

    - Iconic characters like Rover got shafted but we have to sit through Isabelle's boring dialogue every single day. In this game Isabelle does the morning updates so no more Rover in the spotlight. Isabelle is frankly an extremely annoying character in this game, always repeating the same dialogue about how she found her sock or something. She's supposed to report the news but the devs didn't think for her to perhaps report on the weather or mention which town visitors are on the island. Nah it's more important for us to hear about how she finished her puzzle (nobody cares Isabelle).

    - Speaking of dialogue, the villagers feel soulless compared to other games. What is the point of even talking to them when they repeat the same crap? And they always get annoyed when you talk to them twice in the same day. What a joke.

    - Furniture sets are gone. No more Froggy Chair was bad enough but so many iconic furniture sets just ceased to exist. I like being able to craft but not at the expense of many classic items which fans have loved for a long time. Gracie Grace is missing from the game so now I can't decorate my house with ridiculously expensive dessert shaped furniture - wtf is the point in playing?

    - Speaking of crafting, it is a long and tedious process. Say you want to craft 1 fish bait. You can't just craft 100 at once. Oh no you have to do it one by one. Everything in this game is unnecessarily difficult and even though fans have been begging for quality of life changes for months Nintendo don't care.

    - Events are so bad now. The egg event in previous days was just one day. This time it was a 2 week fiasco where your normal daily activities were interrupted by the stupid eggs. During the egg event you could catch eggs by fishing, from the sky etc. The problem was that this completely ruined fishing as it felt like 80% of what you caught was eggs instead of actual fish. If all events are going to be like this from now on I'm not looking forward to events like Halloween.

    - Town visitors seem to visit certain players over others with some people getting Celeste (who gives rare DIY recipes) every week while other players like myself have never had her on the island despite playing since launch day.

    - Finally, on to the terraforming... It's boring. That's all. It is so tedious and so boring. I don't enjoy the terraforming which is a shame because it's the only thing to do in this game. If it's something you think you may enjoy go ahead, buy the game but ever since I unlocked terraforming my playtime has probably dropped by 80%.

There are so many other gripes I have with this game but these are the ones I had off the top of my head. It seems like Nintendo aims to keep updating the game every few months with the content that should have been included on launch day. Apparently this is to "combat time travel" (also why they set events to 2 weeks so people would have to play during the 2 weeks and wouldn't be able to travel back to events). I don't see why Nintendo had to release such a bare bones game just because some people are triggered by people who play the game differently.

Anyway, maybe in a year when Nintendo has actually added the content that should have been in the game to begin with I'll go back to this game but for now I can't be bothered to dedicate any time to this boring game.

It's boring and frustrating for the other players. I would return it but they are invested in the island now, but it's creating a lot of conflict. Do not recommend for families. I was about to buy a freaking Switch Lite and ANOTHER copy of AC:NH until I realized I can't transfer saves!!! Good moves Nintendo. Game is essentially unplayable unless the primary player is giving you a play by play update of EVERYTHING that's happening on their end and even then secondary players can't even give those resources to the NPC's that need them. Appalling money-grab from Nintendo in that only one island can be made PER SWITCH. This means if you want to fully experience the game, you must buy another switch console. This is ridiculous and I have never played a game that does not allow for more than one save file on the same console. Nintendo must fix this, as it is transparent that this design choice was greed-driven.

Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.
