This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Recently, we purchased Animal Crossing: New Horizons as a reward for my son, who had saved up half of the cost with his allowance. He was excited to play the game, as my wife and I had played every previous version and had told him how much fun it was. We were all looking forward to playing the game and enjoying watching the island build up and grow. When the day arrived, he was the first to log in and play. My wife and I then created characters and started farming and building our homes. Then, the first major 'milestone' arrived. He started working on the quest, then went out for the day. I decided to log in to my account and help out with his quest. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't. Essentially, I was not the 'main' character, and not allowed to progress the main story line. I was disappointed, to say the least. Although I had put quite a number of hours into the game already and built up my home and character, and didn't want to lose that... I was consoled by the idea that I could always start another island and experience the main storyline that way. After all, the Switch has multiple user accounts, right? Wrong. Apparently I have to buy another game copy AND console if I want to experience the game I paid for in full. Or delete my son's island and start over, which I'm not about to do. This is an incredibly poor design choice on Nintendo’s part. Not allowing separate islands? Or allowing multiple players in a *multiplayer game* to have full access to the game features? Ridiculous. This may be the last Nintendo console I allow in my household. I will certainly be scrutinizing their software with independent reviewers very closely before allowing any future purchases in our household. Expand

I know nintendo behaves like the apple of the gaming world. But one island per console is ridiculous. Buying multiple games for one console would plain gready, but trying to force you to buy a whole new console to have your own save is taking the “P”. Might be able to stomach it, if nintendo actually brought out proper family sharing

I like it so much, it's a fun game, very reminiscent of the old Animal Crossing games. But, the inability for users of the same switch to have different islands isn’t cool, even above, only the first player on the switch can complete assignments from Tom Nook and other characters. If 2 or more people play on the same switch It become bored for the other players. Thats why i give a 2 to the game

I’m very frustrated at this multiplayer couch co op settings. What a major disappointment.
Why would Nintendo not add split screen or allow others to perform tasks ( pockets, phone, map etc).
Sure the multiplayer online might be fun IF you have a second switch AND a second game otherwise I’d skip this game altogether if looking to play at home with friends.

RIPOFF! $60. for a one-person game. Can't even buy and use another. No idea my wife wouldn't get her own experience crafting and controlling development. My gosh, you can have multiple users in Breath of the Wild which is magnitudes more complex. This is easily solvable and simply unforgivable.

Cute, fun, laid-back time-filler. Bad value proposition, however. Not a great deal of content for the price.

Passing events/occurrences is frustrating. Missing (not being able to experience at all due to time/schedule constraints) meteor showers and more is a bother.

RNG with Redd’s artwork is especially bad.

So I was play enjoying the game but I didn't mean to time travel and now I can't go back to my original file and I don't want to retry the game because I like my villagers and I was wondering if their should be a save file where when you can go back to a old save as in you make a save and a few months of you playing you can go back to that first save but you can't go to your future island?

This game is absolute garbage I can't believe Nintendo of all people somehow messed up animal crossing it takes too long and the controls are like playing Call Of Duty with the resident evil tank controls. I can't believe it... After digging nearly 400 hours into New Leaf on the 3DS, I was patiently awaiting the next iteration on Nintendo's newest console. I was just as excited as everybody else was when the game was first teased and then announced; getting hyped to yet again to be fully immersed in the island life.

It's too bad that this game was such a magnificient disappointment!

I started to play this as soon as I got it as an Easter gift, I started putting in many hours and... something wasn't clicking. Unlike New Leaf, where I would have sleepless nights waiting to enter my village for the next day, this game gave me no such feeling. I also played New Leaf consistently for about three years, yet this game became boring to me after about a month. So what gives?

Firstly, there are a few positive things to praise the game for (although mostly minor in the grand scheme of things). The graphics are gorgeous in the game, and the miniscule details added along with them like Villagers now doing activities is so fun to see! The Soundtrack, while it is inferior in comparison to the wonderful soundtrack of previous Animal Crossing games (Especially New Leaf), is still very nice to hear and I enjoy the songs.

With that out of the way, let's get into the many negative aspects. For starters, there's nothing to do! In New Leaf you could shop on Main Street, do errands and play minigames with villagers, visit the island with friends, go thrifting, enjoy tourneys and other special events, and plenty more! New Horizons is just... bare bones (which is quite applicable for the state of the game as a whole.). Special Characters and many shops have been gutted from the game. As you can see in some other reviews here, the developers also promised frequent updates to the game which would add in more content and even gave me and others the hope that many characters and shops would return... Nope! A year in and the updates have been incredibly lackluster, adding in nothing of note ( Well except for content that was ALREADY IN PREVIOUS GAMES). Holidays and Tourneys are God Awful in New Horizons. For example, in a New Leaf Fishing/Bug Tourney you would be competing with all the villagers in your town on catching the largest bug/fish. Whoever caught the largest by the end of the day would be placed in the top 3 and receive a trophy and maybe even special furniture for their achievements. In New Horizons the tourneys are... You against yourself? They instead opted for simply catching the most bugs/fish in an allotted time limit to get a prize. That takes away the fun and soul of a tourney. You would also think the events would be better but that is also a lie, some events are months long where all you do is the same stuff (cough cough wedding day). Speaking of soul being ripped out, let's talk about the villagers. It used to be fun and charming talking with your villagers everyday in New Leaf. You would slowly build up friendships by visiting each other's houses, completing errands, playing games, etc... In New Horizons this has all been sacrificed and Villagers have been made cute objects to look at instead of actual living villagers... The big gimmick of this game is the customization of your island with terraforming, decorating, and crafting being buffed or newly added features. Crafting becomes monotonous and grindy when you have to grind resources from your island day after day, making none of this new system fun for me at all. Animal Crossing should be a game where I can escape the stresses of life and relax, not have to grind for some stupid iron ore in a rock! Oh and by the way Nintendo, drip feeding through updates is not how you make previous Animal Crossing players want to come back to your game!

It pains me to say it but I really cannot recommend this game. Another reviewer here mentioned how this game is more like a "Happy Home Deluxe" where the game is great with decorating and customization, but forgot everything else that makes Animal Crossing Animal Crossing. If you want a true Animal Crossing experience, pick up a 3DS and play New Leaf, by far the better game. I entered this game thinking this could be one of Nintendo's greatest series, now I'm left shivering at the future of Animal Crossing Games.

It is very tedious to find the iron, stone and clay, the terrain, it becomes very repetitive, after a few days pass, the developers did not know how to implement it well.

    Music is just MEH

AC ACCF and ACNL, has great music, which made identifying the games in an excellent way, especially new leaf, it has the best music of the entire saga, examples are, 1am, 8am, 1pm and 5pm, you can feel it identified.

    In New Horizons?

His music can be meh, bad, mediocre, I say that his music is very repetitive and bad, it does not fit the environment, which in this case is an island, for me, almost all of them are bad , with the exceptions of 12pm, 8pm, 3pm and 5pm, which do give a tropical atmosphere.

Its graphics are good, to be a 2020 game on switch, although in the animal neighbors, many do not convince me, they look a little plastic, cheer them up, but that is forgiven.

    The mechanics are terrible!

In later installments, Nintendo was forgiven, that you could only generate a world, for 4 players, but in new horizons, that is no longer forgiven.

It's just ridiculous, like that one island? If the switch, being a more powerful console than the wii u, can support several maps, that is, do I have to pay another $ 400 for a switch and the game? it is no longer tolerable.

The animal neighbors, they became someone without personality or soul, in new leaf or later installments, your neighbors wanted to meet you, you could see their personality in them, they were like people or friends of yours, that you could do many things, such as invite them to your home .exchange things, play among others.

In new horizons, they just became puppets without personality, you can no longer do that, which later installments offered you, they are careless and you cannot talk to them so much, I limit myself a bit to that.

    updates.

The updates, from 1.0.0 to 1.9.0, could be in the base game, it is an excuse, so that Nintendo can extend the life of the game, in my opinion, the updates themselves are bad, almost not brings nothing new, just a couple of sets and the events, which could be in the base game, as I repeat.

In conclusion, this game is not for that fan of ancient animal crossing, if you are looking for a delivery, that you simulate a life with animals and feel identified, because this game is not for you, play new leaf, city folk and that of game Cube.

but if you want to hang out, this game is for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I got Animal Crossing New Horizons in March.
First it was really interesting and I played almost the whole day, but when I was finished with the main part ( having all the villagers, having all shops/ houses and being happy with how my island turned out) it got boring very quickly. I didn't play for weeks now because I have nothing to do. I have to say that Animal Crossing New Leaf was much better except for the graphics. The villagers were fun and you could to talk to them without them telling u the same few phrases over and over again like in New Horizons. Also it had much more shops and locations like the island with its mini games, the hairdresser and many more. In conclusion I think New Horizons is a fun game but compared to New Leaf it's being left on track.
Also it's bothering me, why couldn't nintendo just take New Leaf upgrade it a little bit and leave it there, bet that would've been outsold too in no time...

Also with all the updates, and knowing what people are most upset about they have not fixed the issue of one island per switch. It is unrealistic to expect everyone in the household will have their own switch just for this game. It was more reasonable to think that with the 3DS and even then multiple cartrigas got you multiple islands. On the GameCube multiple memory cards meant multiple saves. On the switch it’s one island per switch and everyone who uses that CONSOLE (as much as they want it to also be a handheld, it’s a console) has to live on the same island and only the person who starts the file actually gets any real say in how the island progresses. That makes it so that no one else really gets to enjoy the full game. If you have multiple family members sharing a switch that want to play the full game prepare to be disappointed. This fix would not be hard but they chose to ignore the issue in the hopes maybe people will buy more consoles? The new update coming is so large they definitely could have made this part of it and they didn’t. Now that they finally “finished” the game they released too early over a year later they are starting to release paid dlc? Not surprised they are mostly concerned with money and not their actual fan base. Expand

Animal Crossing New Horizons emphasizes the customization aspect of the experience more than ever before, giving players the option to place indoor furniture outside as well, but most importantly the power to shape the island's landscape to create rivers, cliffs or change the appearance of specific ground tiles. This greatly enchances the decor possibilities, as well as providing much more furniture and clothing options than New Leaf. Even with this, New Leaf offered many more shops and a greater sense of progression with time, whereas New Horizons's town feels stale and empty with only a couple of shops and almost no upgrades. Compounding this problem are villagers, offering an embarassingly low amount of lines of dialogue that start repeating themselves after mere weeks. Furthermore, their personalities have been simplified and infantilized, leaving most interactions feeling artificial. The new crafting mechanic tries to add some flavor to the acquiring of items and furniture through resource management, but its great potential isn't explored nearly enough as it ends up being more of an annoyance, with tools breaking too often. With all these downgrades, uncertain new mechanics and the usual repetitive nature of Animal Crossing's core activities, New Horizons ends up being little more than a visually pleasing but hollow display of aesthetics and virtual possessions.

This game is fantastic and I even enjoy the one island with multiple people (it should be an option but that's how I intended to play it anyway) but the fact the first person has the entire control of the island is egregious. I bought it and let my roommate play it first while I finished up work and by the next day I loved the town already at which point I discover (which had not been mentioned anywhere prior to the games release) that he had all the control in perpetuity and there is nothing I can do about it. Now I'm five days in and not going to delete it but oh my god please Nintendo, let us at least switch the island representative if not let everyone spruce up the town. And while you're at it let everyone have there own island to keep that dream alive for the rest of the reviewers here.

PS. I agree with the other people that mentioned it's odd none of the official reviewers really mentioned this.

I was very excited to play this game. Animal crusting is a great series and the island concept sounded really fun. Sadly, the game progresses very quickly and they throw out the entire deserted island concept within the first day. I went from camping in a tent to having a house in about 4 hours. It feels like I'm going to have done everything there is to do within a month.

And that doesn't even touch on the multiplayer nonsense. You're limited to one island per console, so player two doesn't get a full experience. Player 1 controls the island, every other player is just a permanent visitor with very little control. If I hadn't started the game the same day as my girlfriend and waited a week or so to start playing, I'd be dropped in a "deserted island" full of houses, people, and businesses.

Don't bother buying unless you plan to be the only one playing.

This game is good if you’re playing it by yourself on a single switch, but playing as part of a family on a single switch is horribly broken and crippled by Nintendo’s predatory business practices. Completely hobbled by the awful decision to only allow ONE main character (the first person to begin the island). All other people/characters on the Nintendo Switch console who join the island are blocked from core story content, from progressing the island, and from unlocking recipes. They are essentially "guest" characters, for temporary and throwaway use.

This is not communicated anywhere in the game, so it's possible to go weeks or months building your island before realising that when your flatmate or sibling leaves/moves out, you will be completely blocked from progressing because they were the "main" villager.

    Absurd, terrible design decision.

In brief: it's impressive that Nintendo managed to create a family game that in no way caters for families.

The issues with the primary resident versus other players is are well documented, so I won't rehash them here. What's particularly disappointing is that anyone could have foreseen this: it's a family game and, given that there's only one island per Switch console, more than one person is likely to want to play it (unless you've got a very small family).

It would not have been difficult to allow players 2+ to contribute to things like building new houses, but instead they're just left out in the cold. In this particular case they can read the construction sign, but cannot see the requirements or provide materials without sending them to the primary player.

It makes a certain sort of sense to only allow one person to make significant modifications to the island, but even then it would not be a particularly big ask to allow the primary player to grant the rights to players 2+.

Similarly, resources like rocks are relatively limited and are handled on a per-island basis: that is, if one player harvests the rock (by hitting it with a shovel - you can get up to eight items per rock without destroying it) no other player can harvest that rock the same day. Because of this, sharing resources between two people is challenging – three or more must be a nightmare.

Nook points to get tickets to semi-random islands to harvest are a partial solution, but the rate at which one can gather Nook points slows rapidly as you progress through the game to the point where this looks like it's going to cease to be viable very soon (5-6 days into the game).

Overall I'm really, really disappointed and I generally expect a lot more from Nintendo when it comes to games that can be played by the whole family. I'm not sure what Nintendo's goal here is; perhaps that we should have a Switch AND copy of the game per member of the household? If so, that's a losing bet, for sure.

-One island per console. Families or couples are locked behind whatever the first player profile has done. You cannot progress if the other islander has played less than you. This is absolutely intentional by Nintendo as to entice you to have one Switch per person. Greed.

-Online multiplayer is a joke. Even when you have people added as best friends, you cannot place any furniture. It gets incredibly boring very quickly when all you can do is fish and catch bugs with friends. At least on New Leaf you could go to Tortimer's Island, to meet new people or with friends, you could play minigames and grind expensive bugs and fish.

-No dream towns, which was a fantastic way to check out themed towns. On that note, now it's much harder to theme your town as shops etc are not in a separate instance i.e high street.

-Duplication glitch has absolutely demolished the trading community. Anyone that isn't cheating cannot buy anything for a reasonable price anymore. How there hasn't been a small patch for nearly a week now is crazy.

It honestly just feels like a big step backwards for the franchise. Some pros so it's not all negative below:

    -Graphics are beautiful

Can't believe the game only allows 1 island per console. Absolutely terrible.

I was really looking forward to playing and creating my own island on the switch. My girlfriend loves Animal Crossing more than I do so I let her make an island and play the game first. Come to find out that I can't even play now because there's only 1 island. It's just very upsetting. Please fix the console situation

**** that **** with the "only one island per switch"
I literally just bought the game before I found out and now I'm stuck with it.
The game's apparently good, but **** that anticonsumer bull****. Why did you change it instead of keeping what you had before? It was so cool when my brother and I figured out that each switch profile had a different save in BotW. That was one of the major

Still mainly a PC gamer, bit I really like the switch. Please don't ruin it.
And whatever bull**** article I clicked to get here, **** off. This is definitely worth a review bomb, especially because it's the only thing is consumers can do to be heard.

The couch coop is awful. Absolutely awful. The inability to access your pocket, having to scroll through aaallllll your tools. No option for split screen and being forced to follow player 1. Not being able to talk to villagers or participate in any activities. It’s just straight up bad. I find playing as player 2 to be worse than just watching someone play.

My other issue (and this one is huge, in my opinion) is the limitations placed on each console. The fact that it is not only 1 island per console, but that’s it’s only one primary player per console is ridiculous. I’ve heard people argue that this is the same as what they did with new leaf... it’s not. The switch is a $400 FAMILY console. It has numerous games marketed to families and groups. It is NOT reasonable to expect people to spend $300-400 on a second (and third, or fourth) console PLUS the additional costs of $90 per game just so everyone in a household can have the same experience.

Nintendo screwed up. The single player content is amazing, but the absolute fail when more than one person in a household wants to play all but ruins the entire game for me.

My roommate bought this game for us to play on my switch. I let her play first on the primary account and I just spent the past few hours playing on a second account. I can’t progress the island at all leaving me hardly anything to do after just starting the game. I’ve lost all interest in playing the game already.

Everything about the game is awesome, except that you know get one island. If you share a switch only one player get to truly experience gameplay. The other person just runs around with minimal objective and less opportunities. If you are a solo player you will very much enjoy the game, otherwise- don’t spend the money.

As someone who bought this game expecting to share it with the family, I am disappointed that everyone besides the first player gets to make the essential decisions for the island. There was not even a warning about this. Clearly this is a greedy ploy from Nintendo to get more people to buy their own consoles.

If you aren’t the “island representative”, you have absolutely no control over your own experience. You can’t even name the island you’re on or unlock items at your own pace. You aren't playing the game, you’re letting someone else’s experience dictate what you are able to do.

You can’t even buy another copy of the game if you want your own island. No, that’d be too easy. Instead, Nintendo decided that each console is only allowed to have ONE island each. Want your own island? Be ready to pay $360 for another switch and a separate game cartridge. Absolutely ridiculous and nothing but a blatant cash grab.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This otherwise wonderful game is hamstrung to the point of unplayability in a household by the fact that the first user controls the progress of the island. This would be fine if you could start multiple islands, but, surprise, Nintendo artificially capped each system at 1 island in a blatant attempt to sell more consoles.

Allow multiple islands or fix multiplayer, having both of these critical flaws completely ruins the local multiplayer.

The game is currently broken and does not allow you to make amy progress whatsoever if you're not the first person to open the game.

So if you try to open the game on your profile after someone already did, the game forces you to play on someone else's island and you can't do anything at all. Just run around catching sih, bugs and shaking trees for eternity.

This game could be fun if both my wife and I could enjoy it. However, it's only fun for one person as the second person to make a character is locked out of submitting things to the museum, inviting and moving villagers, and other decisions.

It's a gimped experience for everyone but the first player with no option to make multiple islands.

    -no cooking
-almost no interactions with furniture (ex: you can't play the guitar or watch tv, they are just there)
-1 island per switch -incredibly bad co-op -item durability Everything is there to prolong your game time and sell more Swtiches. No depth or mechanics, only shallow visuals. If you're not after collecting animals for your island like Pokemon, you'd be better off

I wanted to play this game, but because I share my Switch with someone else, I can't create my own save file. I can only build a house in their town and that's it. I thought that the whole point of this game was to create your own town. And that the point of having different accounts on your Switch was so that everyone could create their own save file. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is basically perfect. Full of wholesome content that helped us cope with the COVID-19 pandemics, the game keeps the heart of its predecessors while innovating enough to make it unique. It may not have won Game of the Year but it'll be the game we all remember from 2020, for sure.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a stunning new instalment in the Animal Crossing franchise, hindered only by its lack of immediate content, quality of life issues and missing returning characters and features While future updates will give the game long-term playability, for those already sipping vacation juice on their five-star islands, island life feels pretty mundane right now.

It’s full of detail, pretty small things, and surprisingly well working simulations and systems – everything polished in such a way that the player really does care about everything that’s going on. [06/2020, p.40]
