There are many missteps in this game, but it is worth playing if you like low-poly adventure games and don't mind the short length.

The level design for temples leaves a lot to be desired. I had to reference walkthrough videos for every temple because the layout and objects activated by switches are not intuitive. For example, several times I would activate a switch, which would lead to a cutscene of an object near me, then I would get lost trying to figure out how to get to the referenced object. Often, the switch also activated a doorway in an earlier part of the dungeon, but with no indication that I'd have to backtrack to that door.

Also, I feel that this game could have been better if it had either voice acted dialogue, or done away with the dialogue completely. There is an attempt at world building, but the core loop boils down to asking a villager where to go next, then just flying north, east, south, or west until you get there.

Sound design was good, with good use of contextual sounds in temples. The song choice in the overworld is unobtrusive, but I personally didn't like most of it.

As previously stated, it is short, but I do not fault the game for that. I like short games, but I felt that the ending was poorly handled.

Overall, the game makes enough mistakes to lower it's rating, but I did enjoy it enough to finish.

While the flying for this game is super relaxing and easily the best part of this game, it may be the only great part of it. The story was interesting to me at first but slowly gets less interesting as time goes on because it's told to the player in the same repeated and kind of lame way. The puzzles aren't very interesting, and the dungeons aren't enjoyable to go through. The movement and animations just look unpolished and the game doesn't feel fully refined just yet. The art style is kind of appealing to me personally but the polygonal character model could've been benefited by having more facial features for interactions. The music is fairly subtle and not exactly notable. For a typical sale price of $2 there are certainly worse games you could get out there but I'd recommend just saving up a bit more and wait for games that are significantly better at sale prices of $5 or $10 (personally I highly suggest Okami HD if you're looking for a Zelda-like experience which is what this game seems to be inspired by). Anyway, for the cheap price I think it's just mid so 5/10 if it was like $20 it'd probably get a lower score but it's fine for its price but nothing too special. Expand

The depth of emotion that the story dips into is remarkable considering the game style, with the music and sound effects combining to create a specific atmosphere within it. There is little to fault in here, other than how its saves possibly could be made clearer from the start to avoid needing to replay the first part more than once. A sequel wouldn't make sense for the story, but it would be fantastic if other stories are told in a similar way to AER: Memories of Old, with its unique ways of getting information across. Nothing new seems to be added post game, but the moving story is reason enough to replay it and get lost in its skies once more.

Overall, the game is just an exceptionally pleasant experience. Nothing it does is truly groundbreaking but almost everything just gels together into a very cohesive experience both aesthetically and in terms of gameplay. It’s an exploration game that has both a world you’ll want to see coupled with a means of traversing the world that’s just plain fun. What more can you ask for in such a game?

AER: Memories of Old teases its potential with some amusing bits - namely the rich atmosphere and the bliss that comes with soaring through the skies as a bird. Still, it feels a bit like Zelda-meets-Myst - with much less detail or interaction. Tough to recommend, unless you find great value in a characteristically passive, serene adventure game.
