Aegis Defenders is a beautiful game with an intriguing concept and fun gameplay, but it can be rough around the edges, the platforming isn't necessarily something to write home about. Playing alone can feel quite stressful and unfair. Aegis Defenders is best when it pins you in an arena with a buddy at your side and waves of enemies to tackle. In those instances, it provides more than enough gameplay and fun to justify its $20 price tag.

In the end, Aegis Defenders proves to be a solid title with appealing visuals and well-established mechanics. More gripping in its co-op mode, this twelve-hour campaign can be a harsh journey if you try to fulfill it on your own.

With great art and an interesting idea at its core, Aegis Defenders still would have needed quite a bit more refinement to really stand out.

Aegis Defenders has several points in its favour, such as well-designed gameplay mechanics, a quality plot and its good audiovisual environment, but as it becomes clear, a good game is more than the sum of its parts. The game's puzzles quickly start feeling repetitive and its difficulty level comes off as exaggerated, which contribute to put Aegis Defenders in the territory of games that could have edged towards a much more memorable status.

Aegis Defenders is an average, run-of-the-mill indie game. It had some worthwhile goals, like hybrid tower defence and action gameplay mechanics with Lost Vikings character puzzles. The most interesting quality is that there is a two-player co-op mode, which changes the dynamic of the game drastically. The real shining moments are during the defending the target portions of the levels, since teamwork actually matters and doing these alone can be a bit much to manage. With a bit of polish and tighter balancing, this could have been a real darling.

If the developers were to take the tower defence sections and spin that into an entire, dedicated game, Aegis Defenders could be really something worthwhile. That side of the game is truly enjoyable. But it's let down by trying to be something more than that, and the platforming and "exploration" elements just don't gel well with the good stuff to make this game as cohesive as it needed to be.

There is some good gameplay and a lot of fun ideas, great character and world design, but it just never gets past the fun you have in the first few levels. Not only does it never surpass the first few levels, it actually gets much much worse.

I hate myself for bashing an indie title but on the Switch this game controls really badly. The number of times I died because the dash or jump button failed to register is shameful. Commig to this after Celeste just feels bad, it feels like my controller went back to NES days and can’t handle two simultaneous button presses.

As you progress what was fun tower defense in the first few levels slowly transforms into gimmicky levels with a redundant difficulty curve.

By level 5.1 I realized that despite my desire to finish this game, I am not having any fun. Maybe it’s cos I’m not playing co-op, maybe it’s cos I want this game to be a tower defense and it isn’t (you don’t get enough resources to play it TD style, you need to spend most of your time shooting) and maybe it’s cos this game tries to be a platformer but doesn’t have the control,s for it. Either way, I am not having fun, which is a shame since the potential is there and the game is interesting, just amateurishly made.

I will come back and revise my review if the game gets the fun patched back in, they did fix some of the **** difficulty issues, but I doubt it.

TL;DR Don’t bother. It just isn’t good enough.

I unfortunately wasted a good amount of time playing this before quiting, don't make the same mistake. Full Review »

Never quite finished Aegis Defenders. It seemed like a game I'd enjoy but I set it aside for a while and could not get back in it.

Never quite finished Aegis Defenders. It seemed like a game I'd enjoy but I set it aside for a while and could not get back in it.

Game(s) like: Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare (real time tower defense) maybe mixed in with some simple 2D platforming

    Pros:
    - Awesome concept

    Cons:
    - Both the platforming and the tower defense were just ok
    - The tower defense especially was not enjoyable. I could put a defense down and the layout made it unclear if it would actually hit certain entry points
    - I personally did not like the graphics
    - Gather resources between waves felt unnecessary
