Its not as bad as the professional critics have made it out to be. First I would like to point out that 'World Championship Poker 2: Featuring Howard Lederer' was well received by the critics yet almost all public reviews were very low scores as many were incensed by the game randomly freezing up, effectively ending your progress. How was this fact not picked up by the pros? Its not as bad as the professional critics have made it out to be. First I would like to point out that 'World Championship Poker 2: Featuring Howard Lederer' was well received by the critics yet almost all public reviews were very low scores as many were incensed by the game randomly freezing up, effectively ending your progress. How was this fact not picked up by the pros? World Series of poker's AI is very difficult to judge. I feel some of the critics must have lost some big hands and automatically blamed the A.I. for their loss, I can't tell at this stage (I will update you guys on the A.I when I play the game even more). The graphics are fine but repetitive, the sounds are good, the voices are terrible, annoying to say the least, but you can turn that down. The presentation and career mode are good. The major downer for me is the game speed that appears to be very random. While you're playing, you'll eventually find yourself pressing the x button as fast as you can to get the game moving faster (the x botton skips graphical short scenes of your opponents actions), its cute at first but you realise its very repetitive and tedious. And then the strange thing is how the game speeds up too quickly during showdowns, one second you're all in and then the next you'll see a close up of the character who won the hand. You hardly have time to figure out who won by yourself, you spend a few seconds later examining each other cards to see what went wrong because as soon as the 5th card is displayed, you have miliseconds to look at it. It kind of takes the fun out of showdowns. Overall, its nowhere near as bad as the critics make you believe. Its not amazing either. I would pay attention to what the public has written and wait for World Tour Poker before making your decision. Expand

This is a great game for poker fans. The graphics are solid, the sound is just ok, but it's poker, we don't play for the sound effects. AI is solid and plays both smart and less skilled players. The rewards are soso and sometimes distract from the game when you just want to move onto the next hand. If you're not a poker fan this title won't do alot for you. If you're not a poker fan this title won't do alot for you. But for a portable system this title works very well. Online play is good and depends mainly on who is online when you log in. My only real complaints about the game are that you can't speed up the action in the omaha style matches, which makes them slow and tedious. My other complaint is that because it's trying to show the whole table at once with 4-9 players at a time you really don't get much chance to "read" your opponents. Most of the time you're just playing hunches and hoping for the best. the big names in the game, like Chris Fergusen does add some nice touches. I was thrilled the first time I eliminated him at the final table. But 90% of the time you don't even notice they're there until near the end of the series. Best advice for newer players, try to win big during your first table then fold any hand not rock solid til you get into the final tables and know you're in the money. If you like poker and are looking for a good game on the go that doesn't require reflexes and keen eyesight, this title is very solid. Expand

The graphics are worse than PS1 quality, the core game mechanic is flawed in that AI players don't seem to actually know how to play poker, and the sound designed can be summed up as a horrendous collection of .wavs that teach you to turn the sound off every time you load the game.

ONLY play via multiplayer, and even then only if you're somehow all trapped in a pitch black

I can't understand how can someone rate this game with more than 5. It looks like crap. Textures are horrible, models are low polly, AI is terrible. Only good thing about the game is a online play.

i was expecting a lot from reader reviews on ebgames, but as much as i want to love this game, the production quality is so low. but i will say the AI is pretty good, and makes for a quick poker game on the go.

This is a great game. I disagree with some professional reviews that the AI is poor, it is actually very good. Some loose players, some tight players. Some dumb players, some smart players. It's production quality isnt that great, like graphics, player voices and reactions. But all in all, it is a really fun game of poker.

This is by far the worst game I've had to endure in my lifetime. I have been playing poker for 15 years and I spend countless hours watching WSOP on TV. I feel I'm experienced enough to qualify my remarks just from my experiences in casinos. First off voices and/or little sayings during gameplay is irritating. First off voices and/or little sayings during gameplay is irritating. Secondly and most importantly, the "AI" in the game is a joke. I have lost count on how many times I've gone all in before the flop with pocket aces and the computer calls me with only a 7/2 off suit. Sure enough a 7 7 2 drops and I lose. This is not an isolated incodent by far. I have watched "the pros" in the game make the most irresponsible calls that they themselves would never make. I've also noticed that the computer rarely if ever stays in if you do bet megarly to try to generate some chips in the pot. The computer plays as if it already knows the outcome and the only way to bypass the BS is to constantly save after each hand won (which are few and far between). The graphics are alright which is why I gave it as high a rating as I did, but otherwise I suggest taking your $20 and flushing it down the toilet...that way you can end your misery quicker. All in all...WSOP 2005 sucks!!!!!!! Expand

I read the professional reviews after I had already purchased the game. I must say that the reviews are missing the point. While the game does in fact lack heavily in the graphics and sound department, it is a solid poker experience. I truly doubt that anyone who even thought about picking up this game did so to see spectacular graphics and hear quality sound. I'm certain that they did so to enjoy a relatively realistic poker experience on the go - and this game delivers. As mentioned in other user reviews, the AI varies from poor players to great players, and in that way it does a good job of simulating a true table. Not every single player you ever play with will be highly experienced and make the best decisions all the time, if the game ran that way how much fun would that be? Expand

This is a great game for the aspiring poker player -- especially begineer to intermediate -- it will hone your skills at the basic level until you can go for it online -- sometimes I simply cannot understand how a 'niche' game can be reviewed by mainstream reviewers more used to playing FIFA, Tiger and Shoot-em-Ups! There's essentially no reason to pick up World Series of Poker. Scratch that, there is no reason to pick up World Series of Poker. Regardless of the fact that it's a portable version of Hold 'em, Omaha and whatnot, it's still not worth snagging.

And hey, you don't have to worry about getting fitted for cement shoes later, am I right? I just wish the presentation was a bit more illustrious.

Another cynical exploitation of a fad, but hey, at least it's portable. [Dec 2005, p.139]
