Transformers: The Game

Obviously, this is a game targeted to a specific audience, and while non-Transformers fans will find a few moments of fun, I can really only recommend this game to diehard fans or perhaps new converts after this summer’s movie. With some serious control issues, casual gamers may lose their momentum before the story and gameplay can capture their interest.

The PSP version was really a letdown. Aside from the counterintuitive controls, the backsliding graphics, and the very short play time, I would just say that I felt completely disappointed by my Transformers: The Game experience on my PSP.

It feels like a product rushed out the door to accommodate a movie release.

There are no broken levels or glitchy gameplay, but there isn't any fun either. I never felt like I was this huge Transformer; I felt like a heavy robot kicking things to death.

There’s no disguising the fact that this is a tedious and frustrating game.

Only fans of the license should buy this game. It’s got almost everything you’d expect from a Transformers: The Movie game. It’s got robots, it’s got explosions, it’s got Peter Cullen. What it doesn’t have, unfortunately, is fun gameplay.

If you don't have a multiplayer posse, you're left with a functional, but easy and uninspired PSP game that's functional without being pretty.

The best thing that can be said about the PSP version of Transformers: The Game is that it's not as bad as its PS3 compatriot. [Sept 2007, p.83]

This is the epitome a game that was quickly thrown together with the most basic and juvenile concepts videogaming has.

From the outdated graphics to lackluster gameplay, the game possesses more shortcomings than strengths, making it impossible to recommend to anyone but the Transformer faithful.

Ranging from moments that made me want to chuck the system out the window because of crushing boredom or infuriating rage, no part of this game demonstrates something that hasn't already been trounced by a better offering somewhere else. Stay away.

Envision the dullest possible game about giant robots beating one another up, and then find a way to make it even duller. That's Transformers in a nutshell.

Play the DS or 360 version instead.

Transformers The Game is painful to play, unenjoyable, and frustrating. Do not approach. Do not buy. Do not taunt. It is lethal and is suspected of fatalities is six states and two Canadian provinces.

If you're that desperate for some new Transformers action, you'd be better off sticking to the console versions. Or better yet, track down a copy of Atari's old PS2 game based on Transformers Armada (sure, the cartoon kinda sucked, but the game was aces). In the meantime, this game should be the first thing to jettison when Astrotrain starts requesting that we lighten our burden.

The Transformers formula was meant for videogames. Giant robots destroying cities as the forces of good and evil struggle for supremacy. It's too bad the PSP developers weren't able to parlay that into a semidecent game.
