  1. One of the most addictive portable NHL games you’ll buy this year. No offense to the wonderful Gretzky games, but when it comes to a truly deep NHL hockey experience this is the series you will want to own.
  2. NHL 07, despite its faults, manages to be the best NHL game on the PSP and a good rookie attempt by the folks at EA Sports. If you were just waiting for the NHL series to make its portable debut, NHL 07 won’t disappoint.

The controls are tight, especially shooting. We would like to see the checking system tweaked a bit so players aren't so magnetic. Great puck physics make for exciting, organic goal scoring.
  4. NHL 07 for the PSP is a slightly watered down version of its bigger sibling’s hockey game but that’s only to be expected due to its limited processing power. But what the PSP manages to capture is the fun and ultimate playability of the next-gen console version.

Electronic Arts must have heard our wishes for a PSP hockey game withouth Gretzky's name in the title, because NHL 07 is like a dream come true. [Holiday 2006, p.86]
  6. Clunky settings options, graphical hang-ups, and occasional artificial intelligence fouls bring the game down a peg or two, but mostly this is good hockey that handles the portable translation well.

EA's ice hockey annual trades gamepay depth for arcade accessibility and speed. For our money though the PS2 offers a greater challenge. [Nov 2006, p.103]

NHL 07 is a fantastic and impressive game on the PSP. From what I can tell, it’s pretty much NHL 06 for the PS2 ported to the PSP withNHL 07 is a fantastic and impressive game on the PSP. From what I can tell, it’s pretty much NHL 06 for the PS2 ported to the PSP with updated rosters but without the Skill Stick feature of its bigger console sibling (since there’s no right analog stick on the handheld console). Other than those two items (and possibly the menus), it looks and plays (and sounds) the same. And that’s a good thing. The skating and puck physics are on point, the character animations as well as the highlights/instant replays and cut scenes are very well done, body checking is fulfilling, and just the overall look and feel of the game are very satisfying. The same announcers that are present in NHL 06 are here as well and they do a good job of narrating the action without repeating themselves to the point of annoyance. I have not played any other hockey games on the PSP since this game scratches that itch for me, so I can’t make any comparisons. What keeps this game from receiving a 10 are the initial load times and some weird glitching once I was in the Stanley Cup Finals. Load times are very slow when you first start. From the time you open the game until you get to the menu screen is a minute and a half. It’s a full three and a half minutes until you’re actually at puck drop if you’re playing a season. That’s a long time to wait on a handheld, but, once you do start playing, there are no more load time issues even between periods. As for the glitching issue, once I got to the Stanley Cup Finals, I ended up playing and winning something like 10 straight games in the Best of 7 series because after I’d finish a game, my progress wasn’t saved (even though the PSP looked like it was saving and writing to the memory stick). I have no idea why that happened and it didn’t happen at any other point during my season. One last thing I’ll mention is the game’s camera angle/orientation. The default view is an east-west/left-to-right view, most likely to take advantage of the PSP’s screen dimensions. However, you can go in to the Settings and change the view before you start playing. However, once your game starts, you can’t change the orientation/camera angle for some reason. I thought that was a weird decision by EA to exclude that option. But, just to confirm, you can change the camera angle so you’re not stuck with the default east-west view. Me, I like the north-south view since that’s what I was used to playing on NHL 94 for the SNES and NHL 06 for the PS2. But this is a great hockey game, one I keep coming back to play again and again. If I figure out how to change it I will update this game to a 10/10. Full Review »
