  1. As far as the franchise goes, Metal Slug XX is pretty accessible, and most action-oriented gamers will enjoy it.
  2. Still, for its budget price ($19.99), Metal Slug XX more than delivers on its promise of old-school mayhem.
  3. The game features a good coop mode, but only a few hours of gameplay is just not enough.
  4. Even though Metal Slug has not evolved, it is a still a fun game, but game design changes would definitely be welcomed in the inevitable Metal Slug 8.
  5. I expect only hardcores and nostalgic gamers to truly enjoy the game. Everyone else will probably play it a handful of times and set it aside.

The same fast, tough, silly run-and-gun you'll find in nearly every other Slug. [Apr 2010, p.79]

I can't really recommend Metal Slug XX if you're not already an established fan of the franchise, and in all honesty, I have a bit of trouble recommending it if you've already purchased Metal Slug 7.
  8. The campaign is super-short (clocking in at a little under an hour from start to finish), but this is a game that is meant to be played over and over again. Just don't expect much in the way of innovation.
  9. Metal Slug XX does a good job of offering safe, predictable Metal Slug action while suffering from not doing anything special to make it stand out in this series.
  10. The game plays just like side-scrollers of old and doesn't really apologize for not trying to do anything innovative.
  11. If you're a Metal Slug fan/PSP owner who hasn't had a way to play this entry in the series before, XX is worth checking out. It's a tough recommendation for everyone else.
  12. Metal Slug XX is a textbook entry to the series. The familiar terrain is nice, but it may leave some unsatisfied.
  13. For players who've never had the chance to partake of Metal Slug's particular brand of madness or for those hopelessly devoted to the series, Metal Slug XX will certainly be worth the time invested. For those (like myself) who may still have feelings for the Slugs but can't deny having been there and done that, there's not much reason to sign up for another tour of duty.
  14. Metal Slug XX does not entertain as the past chapters. Without a brilliant level design, the SNK classic is just an old school scrolling shooter suitable for old time fans.
  15. It's too hard for its own good in places, making it far too easy to just exasperatedly credit-feed to see the end, but with a ridiculous amount of practice and ninja skills almost everything is (probably) survivable. Even with all that, though, Metal Slug XX is merely decent enough in its way and little more.
  16. There's about as little to legitimately rave about as there is to complain about. Metal Slug XX is a formulaic romp that should remind people who have ever played any other game in the series of every other Metal Slug game they've ever played. No risks were taken, no innovative ideas were uttered, and no minds were blown,. That said, it's still a fun time.
  17. The complete lack of innovation will kill this brand. Consider buying only if you can't live without your daily metal slug fix.
  18. As elaborated as it can be, Metal Slug XX hardly stands out from the previous episodes of the saga, because of the lack of this sense of madness that made us ride some cyber-mammoths once.
  19. Exactly the same we've been playing for the last fourteen years. The Metal Slug series really need some innovation as soon as possible.

It lacks precision controls and Game Sharing, but this shoot-em-up still brings plenty to the table. If you're a fan, don't hesitate.
  21. The great graphics and expressive characters aren't enough to make this two year old port worth $20!
  22. The game is almost universally unforgiving and doesn't seem to want to let the player ease into its world and actually learn. Rather, Metal Slug XX prefers to pummel you with a difficulty that's more unfair than it is legitimately challenging.

Their are 6 playable characters and 7 playable missions, but the design of the levels feels like they rushed them and in return they made an okay game, it could've been much better. Full Review »

Nice cartoony graphics, humorous and with a big variety of big guns and bad guys to blast. A little old fashioned but retro gamers will lap it up. Full Review »

Some ugly, blurry backgrounds coupled with nothing new, a botched "remake" job that has it's sprites occasionally be a wrong color with some boring as hell levels that feel they were outsourced to some random dolts. The bosses are easily this game's best feature with their lively appereances, sporting all sorts of surprises and mostly great designs. (being everything the rest of the game isn't.) This "enhanced" version of metal slug 7 adds the worst metal slug announcer (personally) only slightly updated backgrounds that still look like ass, 3 alternate paths with only 1 being clearly visible, and an OP waifu. Don't bother playing unless you want to try the bosses yourself or you're *that* starved for more metal slug, this game should've just been a boss rush. Full Review »
