Without a doubt my favorite Final Fantasy game. While I also enjoy 6 and 8, 7 hit all the bases for me, and I don't think it'll ever be topped. The story, characters, music, and battles are awesome. Definitely the best FF game in my humble opinion.

The "Remake" did not even compare. It's a decent game, in it's own right, but was not able to recapture what makes the original game as incredible as it truly is.

** This Metacritic score is incorrect as it is missing numerous mainstream publication reviews from the time of it's release. In actuality, it's true Metacritic score is closer to a 97. [I added every mainstream critic review, for the PS1 version, listed on Wikipedia (I looked each one up individually to make sure they were accurate) and divided them by the number of reviews given.]

** The true user score is also very significantly higher than shown here, as there are a very high number of fake, hate reviews made by people (trolls) bashing the game because of it's popularity. Most of the hate reviews read as if the people who wrote them had never actually played the game. Almost all of them mention things about the game that are completely falso. Often times mentioning things that do not even exist in this game. And there are tons of these hate reviews on here. Literally, hundreds.

By far the best video game ever made! It's sick that this masterpiece was done in a year of development time, 25 years ago. It's sick that this masterpiece was done in a year of development time, 25 years ago. I played it first in 1997 and I love to see other people experiencing this masterpiece so I search for playthroughs and new player reviews all the time. Okay, let's mosy over and start with the most important thing in this game. Story 10/10: The best story ever written! It's just so awesome. Great plot twist all the way. Great buildups, great lore and world building. All characters have their moments and has different reactions to different important scenes in the game, depending on which party you choose. That's great for replay ability also. All the villans and plot points make sense too, and you fight no one just for being a bad dude. Those things that don't make sense is part of the story and gets explained later, it's genius and you go to a lot of places here where you never ever thought before the game started. Soundtrack 10/10: Best soundtrack of all time?Yeah, easily! There is no other games that has this many great songs in it and the songs are in all genres and both beautiful, foreboding and hopefull in the same time. Yeah, sure FF9 and FF6 has almost as good tracks and games like Donkey Kong Country 2 and Age of Wonders is also in the top but FF7 has a broader range of diffwrebce in tracks and still more consistent hits it perfectly. It got so many songs with hint and bits from several other songs in them. That's genius. All village themes are beautiful. The main theme is the best song ever. All the fighting music and boss tracks are awesome and the planet and character related music like city of the ancients, Cosmo Canyon and Cids theme is so beautiful. Graphics 10/10: The lego characters got so much life and emotions. They are charmy and funny. The backgrounds are just beautiful and they are art all through the game. Even 25 years later they look stunning. The battles are cinematic and the Summons so cool, but they should be able to skip in all ff games when you summoned them once. The cinematography in this game is just so much before it's time. It's ridiculous. They used great camera angels, cuts and pans in all the right places and the cutscenes where mind blowing for its time and still holds up today. Gameplay 9/10: This is the weekest part of the game and the one thing that hasn't aged like fine wine. It's still masterfully done but the controls is a little bad some times in the world and some of the minigames really sucks. It's clear why they did go for one or two big minigames per game in ff8-10 instead. But the ambition was there and it's still alot of fun. The fighting is great and the materia system is so flexible and you really crave new materia even though you can clear most of the things without them. The limit breaks are so awesome but the fights are a little slow now so x3 speed battles are useful in the new ports. This game got the best Characters in any game. Yeah Cait sith sucks but even him got some great moments. One last thing I want to say is about the humor in this game. It's so hilarious and funny some times. The honey bee inn. Taking Tifa's underwear in her room. The turks talking about wich of the girls they are in to. The date scene with barret. The scenes where Heidiger rages in Costa del Sol and Hojo is sun bathing and stuff like that is so great and they nailed it. It's also the best paced game of all time and after huge, heavy story bits you always get to something really light like go snowboarding or fly an airship. I **** love this video game! Expand

The reality of the past is quite entertaining, and it is great to see both the future and the past revealed throughout the game. I can see nothing to complain about with FFVII. The story is excellent, the world is well thought, and the gameplay is solid. I believe that it has yet to be surpassed in the RPG genre since everything went 3D. There are those games where everything comes together to form an experience, this is one of those rare wonders.

The best 16 bit rpgs can't touch this - yes, including Chrono Trigger. I am suprised myself at how my second experience has so transformed my views and feelings about this game. I think the main reason why is that I had a grasp of the complex plot (with a bit of help from plot analysis articles by fans) much better this time around. The story and characters and music are what really lifts this game above most other story driven games. Having said that every aspect of the game is well designed including the battle system. Final Fantasy 7 hit the right spot at the right time. It made Final Fantasy popular in the west, created a legacy and a loyal fanbase as much as some haters. It is without a doubt a really great praiseworthy game even if it is not the best Final Fantasy (At least FF6 and Tactics are better for me) or best RPG of all time (Closer to it back then). It was also the end of an age as FinalFinal Fantasy 7 hit the right spot at the right time. It was also the end of an age as Final Fantasy was a Nintendo exclusive series on NES and SNES but the N64 was still based on cartridges and Square did correctly assume that 3D was the future of gaming. Sony had its PlayStation ready that would become Nintendo's nightmare and it was well suited for Squares needs. The rest is gaming history. The game itself has the theme of an evil corporation Shinra Inc. destroying nature for profit and lying to the public on the front. Behind it there is a more serious thread as past events haunt the present and our characters are getting involved. It focused on the main character Cloud Strife a former Soldier of Shinra as he is recruited by his childhood girlfriend Tifa Lockheart for the resistance organization Avalanche. Avalanche want to save the world from Shinra and is framed by them as terrorist organization (They have actually a point here). This starts the events of the game. The story itself has a lot of twist. The characters backstories are all connected to Shinra at some point and everyone has solid reasons to participate in the events. There are even 2 hidden characters for you to find. It handles also serious themes as human vs nature or the price of progress, what actions are justified or abuse of power by organizations. I enjoyed the main story, side stories (especially Wutai) and individual backstories of the characters. Also there are tons of side activities like Chocobo racing (and breeding), tournament battles, snow boarding, a rail shooter and more. There are also 2 super bosses later on that will give you nightmares if you are unprepared. The magic system uses Materia which is condensed life force. It comes in different flavors. Green for magic like healing or elemental spells, pink for status increase, blue for supporting, yellow for special abilities and red ones for summons. There are useful combinations to use and test. The Materia gain also experience points and get better (stronger spells / effects). On the highest level a new Materia is created with the lowest experience level. In addition there are also some hidden items, learnable enemy skills (special Materia needed) and like said before 2 hidden characters. The battles are well designed and some are challenging. The Materia are well integrated into the game and you will enjoy the effects. The summons are epic especially the final Knights of the Round which devastates nearly all enemies in 1 use (hard to get as you must bread the best Chocobo available). The graphics were beautiful and awful at the same time. They had not get 3d character models right at this time. Look how it improved in FF8 and FF9. The battles and especially the CGI sequences however were breathtaking. ILM made the CGI if I remember correctly. The soundtrack however still holds up today. Special warning for the German version. The translation was bad and even Square noticed it and got a better translator for the next game (minor celebrity back then in the gaming community). Also has one of the saddest moments in gaming. I think I can give you a few tips here: Read a FAQ about missable content as there is critical good stuff affected. Having 7777 HP is devastating for your next enemy, always level up your Materia with equipment with double growth (triple exist but is rare), bread special Chocobos as there are non reachable locations (with excellent stuff), some learnable enemy skills are awesome and enjoy the game. Almost forgot that it has not only serious parts but also sometimes great humor. Overall this game is nostalgic as it was for many the first Final Fantasy they played. It deserved a place in gaming history as it created a legacy. Still worth playing gameplay wise but some parts have not aged well. I still have fond memories and replayed a few times. Expand

Nowadays is even a worse experience to play it, the loading screen, the ugly visuals, specially in 3D form, sometimes they remind me of popeye. I give it a 6. soundtrack earns a 10.

This has to be the most overrated RPG ever, and it has many reasons for it, back in the day rpgs where not that famous among the masses, and this game, appeared on the new sony machine, giving amazing graphics for its day, convinced many people to switch to sony instead of nintendo too. This is the first RPG several thousands of players played for the first time, and well it was good! But for those many of us who knew square magic since the days of the nes it was ok at best. Now i compare and see i love way more the visuals on the snes, those little characters with big expressive eyes, somehow managed to provoque a better emotional reaction from me, than the blocky shaped ones from the 3D games.

If you haven´t played you dont miss much, but if you're a rpg fan play it, is not bad, but is not even among the best final fantasies. Which in my opinion are ff4, 5, 6 and 9.

FF7 has many playable characters and everyone is well made. Some are more interesting than others, but Red XIII, Vincent Valentine and Tifa Lockheart are my absolute favorites. Then there is characters like Caith Sith, that I don't give a damn.
Main character Cloud is fairly good but I have never really understand that why he is so popular. He is pretty boring character when compared to many so good ones. Red and Vincent both have more interesting story than Cloud's. Even the romance with Cloud is not very catching. Cloud and Aeris sure make a great couple and with that fact, this game have one of the most shocking moments ever in Final Fantasy. Tifa and Cloud are not very interesting as a couple.
FF7 has very interesting story with all little side stories. There is surprises and I was really interesting about Sephiroth. It is little stupid with end on Disc 2.
With many other characters, FFVII is build well. Characters have stories and real background.

Gameplay might just be the best in whole series. I like FF8 and junction system, it gives a lot of variate and challenge, but FF7 has Materia system, that works better in bigger picture. Using MP is good idea and with large amount of different materias and combinations, with red, purple, grey and yellow materia, it all work and give you a lot of freedom, how to build your team.

World is large and there is a lot to do. Many things are fun and give you a lot of freedom. There many strong monsters, secret stories and mission and even few team-mates are optional. But there is also those bad things that do not work that well.
Chocobo raising (Golden Chocobo) becomes frustrating and man items in this game are missable, which is one of the biggest things I dislike. Then there is bad design, why there is final limit break, that is one of the weakest of them all max dmg 9999, once. These things just frustrate me.

But one thing I really dislike in this game, is the graphic. Graphic do not make game, but this graphic is one I despise. That is the one thing that makes FF8 that one bit better than FF7. Graphic is good in fighting, but why the overall character graphic have to be some **** LEGO block. It has some value, but in long run, I dislike it.

With all this, you might think that FFVII is bad game, but it is not. Final Fantasy VII is one of the best PS games ever and second best Final Fantasy game ever made. Game has a lot of weapons and materia, with Battlestyle and Materia system, that make battles really fun and give a lot to do.
Every character has own style with limits and weaponry. There is many team-mates and majority of them is more than just fine, they are great.
FFVII gives so much to do and it is fun to build characters with superb materia and defeat monsters that are really hard cases. With every rare materia and weapon to be found, this is huge game and well made one. There is bad things in this game, but overall, they can be put aside.

I think this game could have used better ending and more cutscenes, with overall better graphic, but well, that is why remake is coming.
Final Fantasy VII is great game and finale is one of the best in the series. Sephiroth is villain that becomes better than any other character in the game, every way.

The frickin' characters are generic. I hear from people who complain about FF XIII for having generic characters with only one emotion throughout the game when this is just the same. I don't really know of a time throughout the game when Cloud wasn't angst or Barret wasn't 100% morally good but an arse at the same time. Gotta admit the story's fun but as always the critic in me, whilst playing, drifted towards optional things after all what's the point in having side orders if they don't look appealing. The result: I wanted more side quests! They were amazing and hooked me in big time. The main plot to the game starts off well but if you're like me and you're playing the PS4 edition however you've played the PSOne version in the past then you'll take notice of the lack of "insert disc blah" which actually works against the game. You see something big happens after the first disc which leads to a bit of chill out time at the beginning of the second disc which is appreciated however you don't get that feeling when it just continues. You don't get that brake, even for a few seconds, which adds so much thought into what happened and what's going to happen. I know you can stop after that point but if it just continues then you want to keep playing. The PS4 does add some cool features such as R3 which now speeds up the in game speed. When you sit through a slow 10 minute animation of several characters getting off of a train again and again it kind of gets tiring so this feature is much appreciated. We also get what I like to call the "why bloody hell would you want to press this button in any way whatsoever even if you were held at gunpoint that's a bad idea" button. Or R3 and L3 pressed together which turns off random encounters. Why is this a bad idea? No encounters=no points (xp)= screwed when fighting a boss. You also get a button that counters this by just healing you. All in all I enjoyed this game but not as much as FF X. Not the game's fault it's just that I grew up with X.
Big question: would I recommend this game to someone who hasn't played an RPG before or the current strand of RPG games.
Answer: No. FF VII is very much a veterans RPG. Don't know how RPG mechanics work? Welp then you're screwed. However if you've played FF games in the past then I do recommend this one! I'd probably say get your hands on FF X HD first to get used to the way these games work as the others sort of throw you in with no help. Unfortunately the line between traditional RPG and action RPG has been blurred since this game so those who are used to playing current RPG will definitely need some adjustment periods in order to get through this one however I enjoyed the crap out of it :D

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were some RPGs before this one, but no doubt after this game this style got a lot of attention from a variety of players. This game have a complex and interesting story, a charismatic villain and a not so bland main character.

The character development is very simple, we just basically level up, but the magic system is very fun. The planet in this game is a living entity and produces “materia”, which are solidified “life stream”, the stuff the planet gives life to any being. We equip materias in our weapon and armor, and they level up as we kill enemies. Our characters can use magic and special powers depending on which materias he has equipped. The battle system is turn based, as most classic RPGs are, and we find aleatory battles as we walk around.

In the beginning we start in Midgar, a big city full of technology, while in the rest of the world they seem to be between medieval times and pre-modern technology, as it’s common on Final Fantasy titles. This city, Midgar, is sucking the life force of the planet to power it’s machines.

In Midgar the technology is far advanced, they were able to create soldier clones to serve them, and they have super-human powers. Theses soldiers have no family, but they implant false memories in them, so they think they are like any normal person. You are one of those soldiers, fight as a rebel against the Midgar government, or Shinra enterprises, to save nature and the planet, as everything is dying around the city.

Soon you find your true enemy, another clone soldier called Sephiroth that had discovered his origin and rebels against Midgar, using his superior powers to kill a lot of people in the Shinra Headquarters, the main building and enterprise behind the mining of the life stream from the planet. His motives are revenge, and soon after he discovers a menace to the planet and will try to use it to his advantage, bringing humankind to the brink of extinction.

This is just the very beginning of the game, the story is profound and full of details. Everything is grand and ambitious about this game, it was a revolution at the time. I’m glad to see they are doing a remake, this game deserves, it was a masterpiece.

Final Fantasy VII is not flawless but it is easily one of the most ambitious and compelling games I have ever played. If anything I would say FFVIIFinal Fantasy VII is not flawless but it is easily one of the most ambitious and compelling games I have ever played. The sheer scope and ambition puts even other quality RPGs to shame and there are very good reasons why it is still considered a masterpiece. There are certain aspects of the game that haven't aged well but that does not make the game overrated. If anything I would say FFVII is underrated because to this day there is no other Final Fantasy game that dared to attempt so much. It combines so many ideas and genres in a way that makes sense. The story is epic, complex, and well crafted yet very different from other RPGs that came before it. There are some plot holes and a few parts are convoluted but overall it is very well thought out and is far deeper than most game stories. The characters are iconic, well developed and compelling. The soundtrack remains in the conversation for the best of all time. The visuals have aged very poorly but the visual concepts themselves are still distinct and appealing. I can still remember the first posters when the game launched and there are so many moments throughout the game that are immediately recognizable. The gameplay itself may seem primitive now but at the time it attempted to mix many gameplay elements. I still can't think of any other RPGs that allow you to ride motorcycles, birds, airships and submarines all in one game. There is so much that the game does well that the areas that it falls short are easily overshadowed. I don't think it is perfect or the best game of all time but if they did the Remake right and fixed the few flaws it could be the best of all time.

Gameplay 8 - While the battle system starts off quite primitive, it layers new elements in a satisfying way and by late in the game there are actually a lot of ways to approach combat. Each character has many limit breaks that keep things interesting and while there aren't as many summonings as in FFVI they are far more cinematic. The thing that sets the gameplay apart from other games in the series is that there are so many gameplay elements outside of combat. There are stealth sections, puzzle sections, motor cycle chases and even submarine exploration. The game even has sim elements.

Story/Progression 10 - The story is the best part of FFVII. Even though it isn't perfect, I still think it is one of the best video game stories of all time because of how many great ideas it blends together and how it does things that I haven't seen in a game before or since. It has one of the most iconic openings in a game and from there it immediately drags you into a world that is bizarre and yet quickly understandable because of how well developed all the ideas are. It isn't like any other stories in the series but at the same time it still has a familiarity to it. It has so many themes that mix into the gameplay, world, magic system and lore. It has one of the best villains in fiction yet ultimately even Sephiroth is not the central problem within the story, he is just a conduit for bigger environmental and social problem. He is not a dark lord, he is a complex person dealing with his own problems that are understandable because of the complex circumstances of his life. I could discuss the story of FFVII all day and still have more to say about it. It does have moments that are convoluted but I can't think of many game stories that offer more.

World 8 - The world is vast, complex and full of variety. Every location offers something new and memorable. Unlike most RPGs that came before it, the locations are all unique and even the way you interact with them can be different. It can be a bit annoying to traverse sometime, the game does make you back track a lot and sometimes getting from place to place is not intuitive. The world building is great though, it feels like each location in the game serves a believable purpose. Some of the areas seem a little out of place and messy in terms of their design but that also adds a sense of realism to the game.

Characters 10 - There is a reason why FFVII has some of the most memorable characters in gaming history. Not only are the characters iconic looking they are also very well fleshed out. Sephiroth isn't just just a badass with a big sword, his story is incredibly complex and layered. His own journey is full of twists and turns even more so than the protagonists. He evolves and earns his place in the story rather than simply existing as the final obstacle like so many other game villains. Cloud is also far more than just an icon, his story is one of the most unique of any Final Fantasy hero. His very identity is at the heart of his character arc and the story is as much about him discovering himself as it is saving the world. Unlike most stories that have a pretty straight forward female lead/love interest, FFVII once again breaks convention. Aerith and Tifa are both very well developed and both are more than they initially seem.

The game is known from one of the biggest plot twists in the history of the video games, and it's still valid in 2023 (of course if you avoided spoilers).
The mechanics are classic-JRPG, turn-based fights, which could be repetitive, especially with random encounters, but honestly, you don't have to grind, if you don't want to.

FF7 showed the western world that the story in the RPG can be written very well, immense and compelling. Also, let's not forget about brilliant soundtrack made by one and only Nubou Uematsu. One of the best soundtracks in video game history, up to this date. The game is packed with mini-games, I don't think there's so much diverse content in any other Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy VII for sure is one of the best RPG adventures of all time.
If you can stand dated graphics and some gameplay mechanics, such as platforming segments, it's perfect 10/10.

When the Final Fantasy VII story is viewed as a whole, it is one of my favorites of all time. The graphics were amazing for their day, but are older than a majority of the people writing reviews. If played on PC, there are various mods that help smooth the character models out tremendously. The music is still among the best ever composed for a game, my favorite being Jenova's theme. If you are not fond of the low quality music, there are mods to replace the music faithfully with high fidelity versions of the songs. The original PlayStation version actually had better quality music than what is available with most of the ports even today. When the remake is released, I hope for dual modes of combat, turn based slow combat for people like me to play games to relax, and active action combat for those who prefer that style. The political and philosophical parallels still apply today, maybe even more so. Like all great works of art, the metaphors and symbolism in the game could literally be studied for years and still not fully explore their meaning. Expand

Every big game since has had to borrow something from the grand cinematic scale in which FF7 is told since. People who nitpick it for having base combat aren't seeing the bigger picture of what it contributed. Expand

Moments later, our hero, still unnamed, got off a train with the purpose of destroying a mako energy reactor, something that was being detrimental to the health of the planet. In this way we got into the skin of a former soldier who had become a kind of terrorist, but really was a mercenary who works for Avalancha, a formation that fought against the Shinra organization. The emotion of these first minutes would catch us instantly, but everything that was to come was going to hook us much more to the command of our console (or computer keyboard, although I prefer the PSX version). The fight to save the planet was going to lead us to discover a man named Sephirot, ex-soldier with a mysterious past, who was much more powerful than any enemy seen before, and who would not hesitate to destroy everything in his path in the face of dementia...

I have no doubt that the system of subjects, invocations, objects, limits is the best system ever created in an RPG. This also offers plenty of freedom of operation, as well as fun and tension in every fight that is impossible not to enjoy and praise. We managed a Cloud in the environment for which we advanced, we moved by the pre-rendered funds and in the moment in which we had to fight, the screen changed. We went from polygonal and anarchic characters -virtually speaking-, to a much more balanced and compensated in combat, where we did manage all the members of our team.

As we were discovering locations and advancing in the plot, we could move around the map with complete freedom, although this depended on the means of transport that we had. With the boogie we could cross small rivers, which was an advance compared to the race on foot; with the ship "Strong Wind" we could explore almost any location on the map... And I say almost, because we would have to use the chocobos (a kind of colored ostriches) to access the last corners of the planet, where we would be waiting for succulents rewards.

Final Fantasy VII at the time of its release, certain aspects were seen as revolutionary, a plot that focused on the development of the characters, a unique battle system and 3D graphics...

To finish with this brief summary about Final Fantasy VII, I am going to talk about the duration of the title, since the game can last 150 hours if we propose to complete all the challenges, for example kill the "Weapons" of the planet by which we move, which are huge enemies that will make things very difficult, get all the materials, the chocobos cited or learn all the parallel stories that lead to Sephirot, Shinra and Cloud. I also want to highlight the excellent soundtrack, orchestrated, with unique melodies, as well as some more special ones for romantic, sad, happy, relaxed or tension moments.

And I will not talk about the scenes, which is something that cannot explained by words and one should witness them with one's own eyes.

The greatest masterpiece ever delivered by the world of video games.

There are a small handful of games that no matter how many times I play them or how much time passes since I first played them, they still evoke the same reaction from me every time. These are the best games ever made and FF7 is one of them.

It's important to note that after 21 years of age this game can still stand up in terms of storytelling and gameplay even after time has rendered its graphics mostly archaic. 21 years. It's difficult for an entertainment product of any kind to have that level of longevity. Even movies struggle to not age badly after that sort of period of time but FF7 manages it.

The storyline ebbs and flows brilliantly, leading you from one set piece to another in a way that keeps you wanting to find out more even when you practically know the script by heart. The characters make you empathize with them and their missions and despite the odd bit of script now reading a little poorly (in part due to translation issues) you find yourself rooting for them the same way every time.

The gameplay system in this is my favorite amongst the FF series. It's not needlessly complex but rewards an experienced player for knowing its ins and outs. It's accessible but nuanced. You could play this game slapping any materia in any weapon or you can garner the knowledge to make set ups and annihilate everything you face. The amazing thing is that it never feels less satisfying to do every time. In my recent playthrough, racing through it all somewhat it still felt satisfying to unleash limit breaks and finally break over 1000hp per hit. It still felt rewarding to level up both yourself and your materia to new heights and attack bosses with ferocity. It takes a very special sort of game to be able to do that. I think part of it is what the game gives you, it gives you bit by calculated bit. You can jump the gun here and there if you know how but by and large its that waiting and the results of that waiting that become addictive.

Graphically, in its day, this was stunning. The mixture of FMV backgrounds with the game graphics on the front had been done before but it wasn't just the graphics but the brilliance of the design. Midgar still looks remarkable to this day. The Golden Saucer also. Towns felt alive. There was so much to see and to do in each of them they never just felt like places the designers could plonk down some shops and a save point.

I struggle to think of a more iconic game soundtrack than this one. There are so many themes from this that are a huge part of gaming history. The opening strains of the battle theme or even better the boss theme. The WEAPON theme, Aeris' theme. They have all stood the test of time fantastically well. The only thing I can consider comparable is the soundtrack to Super Mario 64. Between the two of them they're amongst the best loved and remembered scores to gaming ever.

The scale of the game back in the late 90's was unbelievable. A three disc game was pretty much unheard of back then and the game is an easy 20 to 30 hours even when you know every part of it by heart. There is a wealth of things to see and do and yeah modern RPGs may dwarf its content you only have to look at what else was around in 1997 to realize just how incredible of an accomplishment this game was from a technical standpoint, a gameplay stand point, a writing stand point, a musical stand point. It simply ticked every box.

I've played the vast bulk of the FF series and I never felt they got it this right again. FF8 made this look arcane graphically but the story was all over the place, the draw system was flawed, as was the GF and Limit Break set ups. They seemed to want to always re-invent the wheel which is my major gripe with it. Most of 7 was perfect and a few tweaks what was already there would have benefited the series immensely. Instead they kept chopping and changing and as such, though it's just persona opinion, they never reached this height again. Each game before or after this has had plot work that made me stop caring or characters that were just too zany. Whilst I know I'm talking about a game where a cat rides a gigantic stuffed toy in battle wielding a megaphone that always felt like the exception to the rule. The rest of it was fantasy but in its own vein believable and relatable and that is what made the story and it's characters so brilliant, so timeless.

Once every year or so I'll fire this up and it draws me in every single time. I'm sat here now 15 hours into a new play through when I have a backlog of vastly technologically advanced games to be playing but there is something to be said for the charm and I suppose above all the nostalgia that FF7 invokes in me. It's a brilliant game, yes, but it reminds me of my childhood and in turn reminds me just what a brilliant medium of entertainment video games can be at their finest.

And this is one of the very finest.

9.6/10, this game is so fun to play. Leveling up feels better here than in any other RPG. I love actually using the items I have in this game as I tend not to do that in other RPGs. Equipping new stuff is good, and grinding doesn’t feel like a chore. If you have a PS4, buy this game.
