They give these games 0's because of their own hatred for something that succeeds so well. Mindless, fake gamers.

Every single person I know in my life that I've shown this game to back in 1997 was in complete jaw dropping awe at how gorgeous the cutscenes, music, gameplay, story, and characters were. This game looks like crap now, sure, but back then it looked amazing. People who complain about graphics are obviously too young to appreciate how great they were when it was released. This is called living through the era when each generation wowed you, no matter what. This game was released only a year after the PS1 was released so obviously things would improve throughout the years. This happens with every generation of consoles. Developers figure out how to make games better looking every year....

Flawless game for its time. 10/10 and I cannot wait for the remake.

Why I gave 0 for this review: because I hate the story that Aerith must be dead. Maybe Aerith may become alive in FF VII REMAKE. Square Enix already altered the story...

I will give score 7 if Aerith were alive in the original FF VII, really. This is a good game, but not the best.

I was completely surprised and intrigued when you find out Cloud may not be Cloud, though it felt slightly forced (Tifa should have said something way earlier). And FFVII is much more a game than modern RPGs. There's a lot you have to figure out on your own and some alternate directions the story can take in addition to sidequests. It's much more interactive. Also, I was surprised at how long the game actually took to finish and all the content and areas there were to explore. The monsters were....freaking random, but original. I loved the pre-final battle against giant Sephiroth where you had two parties to use. It made me a little disappointed when I got to the real final battle (talk about slow and tedious). But I really did fall in love with it when I played it. The character development is incredible and I loved the whole package despite a few complaints here and there. Expand

You will explore every corner of a huge planet, from the huge and futuristic city of Midgar, to the lost Forgotten Capital, hidden temples, deserts, snow, underwater and a little bit of outer space and everything fits together in a perfect mix (science vs magic). The game is very unpredictable (especially when disc2 kicks in) and never gets boring even though it is 50 hours long. However stay away from the recently released spin-offs Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children! Sephiroth is an example of one of those game villains who just "don't" die. The earlier villain offering, Kefka, from Final Fantasy VI was manical, psychotic, and succeeded in scorching the earth. When he died, that was it, he died. Onto the parts I loved. I loved having a nice variety of characters to choose from. I loved the materia system, exploring the world and finding new bosses to kill. The Golden Saucer was awesome, lots of minigames and other things to do. More RPG developers need to learn players love having a mid-game hub to do other tasks rather than advancing the story. It's a shame square hasn't learned from their success though, as newer games in the series usually lack anything with 10% of the depth of the Golden Saucer.

Main villain was weak, but it's still a great RPG experience, a far gap between a 9 and 10 though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some people commenting here are very jaded. I recently tried to re-play this game, and over 15 years later, it was to a certain extent tedious, but considering how many great RPG's have come out and how far game development has come in that amount of time, it's really no surprise. However, to those saying the story was horrible, perhaps you play alot of shooters with extremely linear and copy pasted stories. I am HUGE on story development, and must say in today's era of gaming, that aspect is truly lacking. The story of FF7 was one of the deepest and most immersing I have experienced. It was intricately written and placed, each main character had their own background fleshed out (which is alot more than most games can say these days), how they all came together, some purposely, some seemingly random. The characters played off each other very well, to the point that you feel as if you're part of it while they convey their emotions into you. When Aeris dies, you almost feel yourself die a little inside. When you learn of Cloud's mysterious past, you find that most of what he believes is not necessarily true, and that he lived vicariously through Zack n Sephiroth. His tortured, twisted, demented mind shows exactly why he is a man of few words, and little emotion. The many twists throughout the story, I found at the time to be quite unexpected and enthralling. Each little FMV sequence and dialogue tying this illustrious narrative together. Not to mention the sand-box aspect of the game, where there are so many side-quests, that involve more than just stupid fetch quests (the side quests of today's RPG's), that sometimes also add to the story, or tie up a loose end, were imaginative and great. The arcade! Awesome! In today's RPG's fetch quests are all of the sidequests. That and crafting items, lame... If you can honestly say you dislike this game, or think it's overrated, you are missing a part of your soul. Or you enjoy the horrible re-hash of Oblivion that is every RPG coming out these days, which every single one is lacking in story, but it's ok, you can mash the A button all day and feel satisfied. I'll enjoy what yesteryear has to offer, while you drone the simple minded, lackluster stories, un-artistic, button mashing crap of today's generation. You are probably the same people that hated the new Duke Nukem, because it didn't have really-real-realistic graphics and it wasn't MW3. It's people like you that killed awesome epic gaming, in exchange for marketing research that makes every game these days a remake of last year's game of the year... Bring on some more epic Turn-based RPG's, screw these brainless idiots! Expand

The story starts small but evolves into a brilliant, thorough, engaging epic. You connect with each and every character in the game. Be it the ones you control or the ones you face. You never lose track of your main goal but can spend hours exploring and then continuing on your focus. As you progress you develop your characters, learn more about their history and the major plot. Everything is just so perfectly synchronized. The atmosphere, music, scenery, characters, combat and enemies ties together in such a great epic adventure I had never in my life experienced. It's now been 13 years since the release and at the time the graphics and cinematics were beyond what you would expect for the console. As time went by and the Final Fantasy franchise slowly rotted into the ground, releasing games that would never compare to this classic. Changing a system that was far from broken and generally tearing up the name, this game stands out as the best achievement of Squaresoft. I keep trying out their newest installment only to stop half way ending up back where I started. Graphics is not as important anymore. I would rather play a good game with outdated graphics than a shallow cosmetic excuse of a game. If you haven't tried this game yet, you're in for a treat irrelevant of the graphics. Expand

One of my all-time favorite games, and my favorite Final Fantasy game. It's a long and good game with lots of character and excitement. The combat system and game mechanics i general is rock solid, the characters deep and the plot complex, but not too over the top either. A must-play for all fans of the series and RPG's alike

The characters are extremely charismatic, with an extremely good protagonist (people hate him because he is lazy and traumatized, but that's exactly where he's a good character) and the whole game system (from battle to menu) is extremely addictive. You'll have plenty of time of fun here, about 60 hours for those who take their time and make some of the sidequests, more if you wish to unravel every detail of this huge game that tops the content of many of today's behemoths. In short, the most defining RPG of the 32-bit era! It's existence spawned a slew of inferior spin off games and movies, but most importantly helped establish the genre and it's transition from 2D to 3D. Good Plot, hours worth of side quests, great music, rewarding, & addictive. Visuals are obviously dated, but remain charming and were amazing for it's time.

FF VII it changed the RPG genre. It provides deep and satisfying gameplay. Soundtrack is pretty neat and memorable. But FF VII story is a bit unfocused and confusing. Example: Group of terrorist(AVALANCE) thinks that the best way to earn equal rights to the people is to destroy city's powerplants. But if you are a RPG fan this game will stun you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy VII is truly a work of art, and I honestly mean that with my heart and soul. This game had dazzling graphics for the time of its release, revolutionized the gameplay of the genre, has an amazing soundtrack, and beautifully delivers its central themes.

FFVII is not like the previous entries in the series. Instead of a medieval or steampunk-like world, it takes to a world more centered around technology, but still retains fantastical elements. I feel some kind of introduction is in order: the planet in its core holds something called the Lifestream, which is magical energy drawn from the life on the planet. This energy can be harnessed as mako, and this mako is where materia and the magic materia grants its users come from. A human-like alien race known as the Cetra land on Gaia and settle with the native humans about 2000 years prior to the events of the game. Around this time a being known as Jenova arrives as well, and infects the Cetra with a terrible disease. The Cetra build massive robotic Weapons to kill Jenova, but Jenova is sealed away before they can use the Weapons. They are put into hibernation; by the time this has happened, there are only a few Cetra left in the world. The only other aspect of the story you need to know for right now is that a city known as Midgar has basically become the center of commerce on Gaia; however, Shinra, the corporation in charge of manufacturing the planet's mako and using reactors to power almost everything in Midgar, is the real entity that is ruling. Shinra is highly corrupt and is draining the mako from the Lifestream, which is killing the planet.

Trust me, I could go into MUCH more detail, but as far as background knowledge goes, those are the essentials. Now, at the risk of skimping out on indicative game elements, I'd like to go over something most people skip: the central plot themes. Yes, FFVII is greatly inspired by both real-life and mythology, particularly from the persecution of Jews and Judaism, but what I'm talking about are the literary themes, for lack of a better word. FFVII heavily revolves around nature versus technology, loss, and identity. The entire plot is a nature vs. technology scenario: AVALANCHE, a team that vows to stop Shinra from killing the planet (also where most of our main characters come from), is fighting Shinra itself. As the story progresses, it eventually becomes the world versus Jenova, and the ones who were fighting for the planet suddenly must go against it to save all mankind. There is also loss in this game. I think we all know about the tragic loss of one of the main characters early on in the game, which was actually inspired by the passing of the mother of the producer and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. This is definitely the most heartbreaking loss, seeing as you've spent hours and hours of game time grinding with and learning more about this character--before you know, you yourself have grown attached to this fictional character portrayed through polygons and text boxes, and you start to feel sad, maybe even hurt by the death of this character. Now, aside from loss, there is also identity. There are identity crises and regaining of identity EVERYWHERE in this game. Our primary main character doesn't even remember his memories correctly until almost two-thirds through the game! Identity is dotted throughout this adventure, and I think it is so masterfully woven into even the gameplay elements itself.

Now, you're probably asking by this point why I gave the game a 9 and not a 10 if it seems like I love it so much. Well, to tell the truth, I do think this is the best story I've ever heard and if I could give it a 9.5 I would, but this is not a book or a movie. It is a game, and as a game it is sincerely great, but it is not perfect. I personally think that any game where grinding is basically required is automatically not perfect. The gameplay is your typical RPG, and is still engaging to this day. What's also very engaging are the pre-rendered backgrounds; that is, you have to stare at them for a while to understand where to move. They did not age very well, but they do give the game a different feel, a different style than games before it, and that I applaud. The music is one of my favorite soundtracks in the series. I love it so much because it feels like it came from the SNES Final Fantasy games and was updated with the PlayStation sound chip. The battle themes make you pumped up and the town themes fit the mood of the locales and are comfortable in the background while talking to NPCs. I seriously recommend a listen if you have the time.

The Completionist is currently doing a multiple part review of this game and its various successors. He does more justice than I could ever hope to do in 5000 characters.

It's not the best game ever, but it is an amazing story. FFVII really is a work of art and I hope it will forever be recognized as one.

+ 2nd fav game ever after FF VIII.
+ FFVII has an amazing story.
+ One of the best OST of all time.
+ Not padded with side quests to the point most of it is side quests like modern games.
+ Materia system offers a good amount of customisation.
    - The ending could of been a tad better.
    - Character models while exploring were dated looking even for the time.

For the time it came out it was amazing, a trailblazer. The story remains with you years later. Yes, the graphics have aged and the UI is a bit clunky at times but when it came out it was something else. A true gem. It could be remade at some point to add more rounded edges, but its mini-games, story, and everything else was spot on.

God I was so hyped for this, and the first few hours of the game that take place in the cyberpunk city TOTALLY live up to the hype. After that it is awful.

First, it is so beautiful, each shop, each house, each room is hand drawn and unique, which makes the world feel so real, this is a special accomplishment [no assets used]. The city feels real. The grind feels well paced and fun.

After you leave, you instantly feel that tugging in your heart that you should stop; seriously even with a guide and the speed and deathproof boosts that the Nintendo Switch version offers (which I forced myself not to use for 16 hours], even with that it feels like a lifeless hollow grind with no point. This game falls off a cliff taller than the one in Death Note. I do not joke. So many of the reccomendations from people are people who played it back in the day and use the annoying, time wasting, dumb grind as a way to wind down because they don't bother to deep breath or meditate so they can play a real game like Bloodborne or Dragon Quest IV on the DS.

I seriously warn you that overall the game is **** and, if you can get it very cheep on sale, if you truly love jrpgs, I highly encourage you to get it just for the first few hours, because at first it really is actually as good as they say!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy is without a doubt THE BEST GAME that i have ever played. Pair it up with Crisis Core (PSP) and Advent Children (animated movie), and you're in for the ride of your life. The story of each character is so perfectly described that you can only feel like you've known them for your entire life.
Fx (SPOILER!) Aeris' death scene surprised me! the fact that Square Soft had the balls to even attempt a move like that, chills me to the my bones.
You get so much enjoyment out of this game. There are countless possibilities. Choose your party, what materia, armour and weaponry they have. It's got amazingly entertaining stuff such as: The battling, Exploring of the map and of course the Chocobo Racing and breeding.
I was left with a little tear about to roll down my cheek, because i felt like i was saying goodbye to a part of myself, which i invested in these characters. And also because i wanted more.
This game woke more emotions in me than any other game, book, movie or TV-series ever managed.

Go play this game! and if you have already, go play it again.

Bought this when it first came out for the PS1, the most epic game EVER! I bought a PS4 Pro just for the remake. Gameplay is excellent and the storyline will tug on your emotions. This is a must play for any fan of the RPG genre.

Final Fantasy VII is what got me into gaming. Twenty years later and all the countless titles I've played, yet I'm still utterly convinced that nothing will ever match the experience I had playing Final Fantasy VII for the first time. This game is what many would define as a classic and I'm so happy that it's getting a remake.

some people say that zeldaOot is better, but zelda has some unpleasant dungeons and ff7 is more replayable
ff7 opened the door to the role in his generation to the casual,
a phenomenon at the height of Mario and sonic in an era without internet

Zack's death makes me cry too :( :( The story is amazing. Cloud missed his life, he wanted to be first class soldier but failed. It makes him endearing. His memories are false, Cloud was third class soldier, it is Zack memories. They got merged together.
I checked SPOILER !!! Sorry for my poor english (╬▔皿▔)╯

Although it has a few flaws such as drawn out animations and storytelling that can be hard to follow. This is one of the greatest rpgs of all time. Play this on the switch or emulator and you'll have a great time.

By far the greatest Final Fantasy game and most definitely my favorite game of all time!

The story is deep. Following Cloud along his adventures with Avalanche. Then the story takes a twist, getting deeper, and putting you on an even bigger journey. And when you begin to figure Cloud out, they throw in a large twist. Making nothing seem the way it appeared to be. I loved the twist of

And when you begin to figure Cloud out, they throw in a large twist. Making nothing seem the way it appeared to be. I loved the twist of this game. And like most of the Final Fantasy games, the ending is always incredibly emotional and touching.

Sound Track: I love the sound track from every final fantasy game. In fact, I even go to sleep to it playing at night. The hardest part, is hearing the song and fighting the urge to play the game again. The soundtrack is flawless.

Gameplay: I loved the combat system. The use of Materia. The fact that you can switch your game play by switching, and linking new materia. This was a brilliant idea. If you wanted a magic user, give them magic based materia. Needed a fighter? Fighting materia to increase your strength. Then, get the weapons with linkings, to combined two materia, to make a deadly combo attack. There was so much greatness to this system. The mini games were also awesome. I loved the first mini game, defending the town by buying soldiers to walk down a pathway fighting. This was such a fun little mini game. And then coming to the arcade, allowing you to take a break from all the fighting, to just play through fun games, and get rewarded for it.

One of the best RPGs ever made. The world is vast and open, the towns rich and lively, the characters memorable and likeable, the story epic, the music iconic, the emotions are all there and it all works wonderfully.

Its a Masterpiece but i gotta admit the graphics aren't really the best and it gets annoying when you randomly get into a fight for walking too far but but it still remains as the best jrpg game of all time

Uno de los mejores RPG de la historia, para mí el mejor de los que jugado. Gran argumento, personajes carismáticos, batallas por turnos apasionantes y un mundo lleno de secretos y minijuegos. Obra maestra.

In remake combat is amazing, characters actually feel real etc. Would i have liked it in 1997? Well no, because then i would have played it in 1997. Instead in 1997 i played true classics like resident evil (1996). But 2020 remake of FF7 actually made me interested in this series. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Brought RPGs into the Western spotlight and contained the most debated plot twist of an era. [Feb 2003, p.97]
  2. You can play the game time and time again. Always finding something new, from a new piece of materia to a new place, to defeating the ultimate weapons. The story twists and turns all the time always keeping you guessing as to what will happen next.
  3. Without a doubt, FF7 is one of the top Final Fantasy games out there. It is also one of the best RPG adventures of all time.
