+ 2nd fav game ever after FF VIII.
+ FFVII has an amazing story.
+ One of the best OST of all time.
+ Not padded with side quests to the point most of it is side quests like modern games.
+ Materia system offers a good amount of customisation.
    - The ending could of been a tad better.
    - Character models while exploring were dated looking even for the time.

P.S I'm sorry, all you fans of childhood memories, but 1997 is the year when Fallout was released and, at last, we have something to compare jRPG against. And, excuse me, but I consider scoring FF7, or any other jRPG, higher then 3 an offence to creators of Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment.

My second favorite FF, Cloud is most likely the most iconic FF character to ever be created, with tons of spin off games, and characters used in multiple games from different eras, and franchises, that should tell you something, this game is as FF as you can get, an almost perfect game, with almost no negatives that come to mind, an easy in my opinion 10/10.

The thing is that I can't imagine how amazing would be if I played the whole thing not knowing anything about it, the characters, the story, the passing, the music, everything is an ambitious piece, the graphics are obviously from the PS1 era but they have aged so well, this game has everything, comedy, horror moments, kaiju, doublecrossing, philosophical stuff, really just everything. There are a few issues with the controls or in more than a few battles, because of the camera angles I couldn't heal or revive the right character, but just that. The story is so masterfully crafted that even when I think I knew everything (because of my friend and well... the internet) I was so invested and wanted to see how it will unfold next.

This game made me reconsider all the classics that I still haven't played and set a really high bar for all the others FF that I still have to play, a true masterpiece that everyone should play, so if you haven't played it before, just give yourself a favor and go right ahead.

A dark and enthralling story and intriguing characters are marred by over-bright Lego-like models with bowling pin arms and frequently disappearing facial expressions that pop scathingly out of dingy pre-rendered backgrounds; it all cheapens the presentation into farcical puppet theater. Sluggish performance and gargantuan load times reduce the battles to frustratingly unresponsive slideshows; even the menus exhibited noticeable delays. Weird graphical issues such as the landscape wobbling and warping as the camera moves, characters shimmering as they animate, and textures and triangles randomly popping in and out shatter the immersion; FMV sequences reminded us of mid-80's ray-tracing demo reels in their primitiveness. The whole colour range seems limited to dismal greys, browns, and the occasional blue or yellow. To top it all off, the entire screen is covered by an ugly, noticeable, dithered mesh that had us wiping our televisions until we realized what it was.

All this leads us back to the sinking sensation we've had for a while now: that for all the "wow" factor, this new 3D generation of home video game consoles isn't quite ready for prime time yet. Even last year's Super Mario 64 on Nintendo's 64-bit powerhouse, for all its technical impressiveness, felt like an unfinished product in many respects with its blurry, repetitive textures, seams, and sharp pointy edges; as much as we wanted to like it we kept pining for a bigger and better sprite-based Mario.

And that's why we feel so disappointed with VII; there are so many good ideas in here that are wasted on technology that's not quite there yet. Square know how to make an enthralling epic fantasy RPG; the narrative techniques and core gameplay of 'Fantasy' keep on evolving and improving. The new cyberpunk-style near-future setting and the new hero Cloud's devil-may-care attitude are all welcome departures for the series; Square somehow manage to blaze new territory while still masterfully merging the familiar fantasy elements. The musical score is, as always, outstanding. And yet the whole experience is ruined by a mushy, clunky, glitchy presentation that just feels unprofessional.

So in short, we feel that VI - even with the narrative glue falling apart a tad in its second half - is still the superior Final Fantasy experience with its polish and smooth responsiveness, but this one will certainly leave its mark in gaming history. And not all hope is lost. Technology has always evolved in fits and starts; no doubt in a decade or so 3D hardware and software developers alike will have worked out the kinks and VII will get the epic cinematic sequel - or remake perhaps? - that it deserves. Until then, here's hoping the current crop of consoles is just a phase.

Moments later, our hero, still unnamed, got off a train with the purpose of destroying a mako energy reactor, something that was being detrimental to the health of the planet. In this way we got into the skin of a former soldier who had become a kind of terrorist, but really was a mercenary who works for Avalancha, a formation that fought against the Shinra organization. The emotion of these first minutes would catch us instantly, but everything that was to come was going to hook us much more to the command of our console (or computer keyboard, although I prefer the PSX version). The fight to save the planet was going to lead us to discover a man named Sephirot, ex-soldier with a mysterious past, who was much more powerful than any enemy seen before, and who would not hesitate to destroy everything in his path in the face of dementia...

I have no doubt that the system of subjects, invocations, objects, limits is the best system ever created in an RPG. This also offers plenty of freedom of operation, as well as fun and tension in every fight that is impossible not to enjoy and praise. We managed a Cloud in the environment for which we advanced, we moved by the pre-rendered funds and in the moment in which we had to fight, the screen changed. We went from polygonal and anarchic characters -virtually speaking-, to a much more balanced and compensated in combat, where we did manage all the members of our team.

As we were discovering locations and advancing in the plot, we could move around the map with complete freedom, although this depended on the means of transport that we had. With the boogie we could cross small rivers, which was an advance compared to the race on foot; with the ship "Strong Wind" we could explore almost any location on the map... And I say almost, because we would have to use the chocobos (a kind of colored ostriches) to access the last corners of the planet, where we would be waiting for succulents rewards.

Final Fantasy VII at the time of its release, certain aspects were seen as revolutionary, a plot that focused on the development of the characters, a unique battle system and 3D graphics...

To finish with this brief summary about Final Fantasy VII, I am going to talk about the duration of the title, since the game can last 150 hours if we propose to complete all the challenges, for example kill the "Weapons" of the planet by which we move, which are huge enemies that will make things very difficult, get all the materials, the chocobos cited or learn all the parallel stories that lead to Sephirot, Shinra and Cloud. I also want to highlight the excellent soundtrack, orchestrated, with unique melodies, as well as some more special ones for romantic, sad, happy, relaxed or tension moments.

And I will not talk about the scenes, which is something that cannot explained by words and one should witness them with one's own eyes.

The greatest masterpiece ever delivered by the world of video games.

Final Fantasy VII is not flawless but it is easily one of the most ambitious and compelling games I have ever played. If anything I would say FFVIIFinal Fantasy VII is not flawless but it is easily one of the most ambitious and compelling games I have ever played. The sheer scope and ambition puts even other quality RPGs to shame and there are very good reasons why it is still considered a masterpiece. There are certain aspects of the game that haven't aged well but that does not make the game overrated. If anything I would say FFVII is underrated because to this day there is no other Final Fantasy game that dared to attempt so much. It combines so many ideas and genres in a way that makes sense. The story is epic, complex, and well crafted yet very different from other RPGs that came before it. There are some plot holes and a few parts are convoluted but overall it is very well thought out and is far deeper than most game stories. The characters are iconic, well developed and compelling. The soundtrack remains in the conversation for the best of all time. The visuals have aged very poorly but the visual concepts themselves are still distinct and appealing. I can still remember the first posters when the game launched and there are so many moments throughout the game that are immediately recognizable. The gameplay itself may seem primitive now but at the time it attempted to mix many gameplay elements. I still can't think of any other RPGs that allow you to ride motorcycles, birds, airships and submarines all in one game. There is so much that the game does well that the areas that it falls short are easily overshadowed. I don't think it is perfect or the best game of all time but if they did the Remake right and fixed the few flaws it could be the best of all time.

Gameplay 8 - While the battle system starts off quite primitive, it layers new elements in a satisfying way and by late in the game there are actually a lot of ways to approach combat. Each character has many limit breaks that keep things interesting and while there aren't as many summonings as in FFVI they are far more cinematic. The thing that sets the gameplay apart from other games in the series is that there are so many gameplay elements outside of combat. There are stealth sections, puzzle sections, motor cycle chases and even submarine exploration. The game even has sim elements.

Story/Progression 10 - The story is the best part of FFVII. Even though it isn't perfect, I still think it is one of the best video game stories of all time because of how many great ideas it blends together and how it does things that I haven't seen in a game before or since. It has one of the most iconic openings in a game and from there it immediately drags you into a world that is bizarre and yet quickly understandable because of how well developed all the ideas are. It isn't like any other stories in the series but at the same time it still has a familiarity to it. It has so many themes that mix into the gameplay, world, magic system and lore. It has one of the best villains in fiction yet ultimately even Sephiroth is not the central problem within the story, he is just a conduit for bigger environmental and social problem. He is not a dark lord, he is a complex person dealing with his own problems that are understandable because of the complex circumstances of his life. I could discuss the story of FFVII all day and still have more to say about it. It does have moments that are convoluted but I can't think of many game stories that offer more.

World 8 - The world is vast, complex and full of variety. Every location offers something new and memorable. Unlike most RPGs that came before it, the locations are all unique and even the way you interact with them can be different. It can be a bit annoying to traverse sometime, the game does make you back track a lot and sometimes getting from place to place is not intuitive. The world building is great though, it feels like each location in the game serves a believable purpose. Some of the areas seem a little out of place and messy in terms of their design but that also adds a sense of realism to the game.

Characters 10 - There is a reason why FFVII has some of the most memorable characters in gaming history. Not only are the characters iconic looking they are also very well fleshed out. Sephiroth isn't just just a badass with a big sword, his story is incredibly complex and layered. His own journey is full of twists and turns even more so than the protagonists. He evolves and earns his place in the story rather than simply existing as the final obstacle like so many other game villains. Cloud is also far more than just an icon, his story is one of the most unique of any Final Fantasy hero. His very identity is at the heart of his character arc and the story is as much about him discovering himself as it is saving the world. Unlike most stories that have a pretty straight forward female lead/love interest, FFVII once again breaks convention. Aerith and Tifa are both very well developed and both are more than they initially seem.

The entire first disc is a boring crawl and the AWFUL graphics are seriously distractive. I’ve never before experienced a big budget title where the graphics almost destroy the experience. The overworld character models lack detail and the colours are at times a pain for your eyes.

Final Fantasy VII is what got me into gaming. Twenty years later and all the countless titles I've played, yet I'm still utterly convinced that nothing will ever match the experience I had playing Final Fantasy VII for the first time. This game is what many would define as a classic and I'm so happy that it's getting a remake.

Dated and overrated. Final Fantasy VII gets a 7/10. It's not a bad game and it's not a bad story, but there are obvious flaws about this game. If you just look at a lot of the positive scores, they're without any sort of merit. I cannot in a modern era of gaming, recommend the original game or any of its ports.

If you just look at a lot of the positive scores, they're without any sort of merit. I cannot in a modern era of gaming, recommend the original game or any of its ports.

    Points against:
Lack of engaging challenges, aside from two optional bosses and the Arena.
Long boring stretches where nothing occurs in the game.
Several characters are given little to do or provide to the overall story. If Barret, Red XIII or Cait Sith were cut from the game, would the overall narrative be affected?
Aside from limit breaks, characters are mostly interchangeable for combat.
Loss of major character is severely overplayed by the fan community. The narrative buildup and expectation of this event is not shocking or surprising.
Most minigames and sidequests are not interesting. Chocobo breeding is a slow painful process.
Weak villain: Never from a gameplay standpoint did Sephiroth ever feel like a legitimate threat. While the narrative does provide some moments to display of the villain's threat, he never feels like a threat when the time comes to finally defeat him.

    Upsides:
Entire Midgar section has steady challenge growth, utilizes all characters effectively in the narrative, and gives each character a role in terms of combat capabilities.
There is a lot of variety and options as far as distractions go. The Arena is by far the best inclusion in the game, as it tests a players capability while also providing handicaps. Completing the Arena challenge offers useful rewards.
Some visuals are still haunting and some story elements are absolutely perfect. The Midgarsormr on the pike is a perfect way to elevate Sephiroth and is an awesome display of visual terror. Flashbacks and critical moments, even for characters that aren't that great (Red XIII) are handled beautifully.
Reno and Rude are by far the best NPC duo included in a game series. From the dialogue between the two and the engagements that they find themselves in opposite of the main party, the Turks definitely deserve praise for standing out from the other side characters.

That being said, if you include the other games and movies in the Final Fantasy VII universe, it gives the characters a life of their own. When the Final Fantasy VII story is viewed as a whole, it is one of my favorites of all time. The graphics were amazing for their day, but are older than a majority of the people writing reviews. If played on PC, there are various mods that help smooth the character models out tremendously. The music is still among the best ever composed for a game, my favorite being Jenova's theme. If you are not fond of the low quality music, there are mods to replace the music faithfully with high fidelity versions of the songs. The original PlayStation version actually had better quality music than what is available with most of the ports even today. When the remake is released, I hope for dual modes of combat, turn based slow combat for people like me to play games to relax, and active action combat for those who prefer that style. The political and philosophical parallels still apply today, maybe even more so. Like all great works of art, the metaphors and symbolism in the game could literally be studied for years and still not fully explore their meaning. Expand

Kefka. Hilarious clown jerk type like the joker but insanely evil and power hungry. He pretty much ruins the world. Mean while Sepiroth is just a emo kid who burned a town down.

Terra is a mysterious person with a very interesting past that's slowly relieved to the player in a awesome way. Turns out she's actually way more awesome than you initially suspect. At first you think she's just a basket case but you soon learn she's godlike..

Cloud is a emo kid wanna-b-tough guy with mental problems.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were some RPGs before this one, but no doubt after this game this style got a lot of attention from a variety of players. This game have a complex and interesting story, a charismatic villain and a not so bland main character.

The character development is very simple, we just basically level up, but the magic system is very fun. The planet in this game is a living entity and produces “materia”, which are solidified “life stream”, the stuff the planet gives life to any being. We equip materias in our weapon and armor, and they level up as we kill enemies. Our characters can use magic and special powers depending on which materias he has equipped. The battle system is turn based, as most classic RPGs are, and we find aleatory battles as we walk around.

In the beginning we start in Midgar, a big city full of technology, while in the rest of the world they seem to be between medieval times and pre-modern technology, as it’s common on Final Fantasy titles. This city, Midgar, is sucking the life force of the planet to power it’s machines.

In Midgar the technology is far advanced, they were able to create soldier clones to serve them, and they have super-human powers. Theses soldiers have no family, but they implant false memories in them, so they think they are like any normal person. You are one of those soldiers, fight as a rebel against the Midgar government, or Shinra enterprises, to save nature and the planet, as everything is dying around the city.

Soon you find your true enemy, another clone soldier called Sephiroth that had discovered his origin and rebels against Midgar, using his superior powers to kill a lot of people in the Shinra Headquarters, the main building and enterprise behind the mining of the life stream from the planet. His motives are revenge, and soon after he discovers a menace to the planet and will try to use it to his advantage, bringing humankind to the brink of extinction.

This is just the very beginning of the game, the story is profound and full of details. Everything is grand and ambitious about this game, it was a revolution at the time. I’m glad to see they are doing a remake, this game deserves, it was a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy VII is one of those games that has many things I don't like, but it also has many things that are more than marvelous. This game has one the best villains ever created, best Final Fantasy villain ever, Sephiroth.

FF7 has many playable characters and everyone is well made. Some are more interesting than others, but Red XIII, Vincent Valentine and Tifa Lockheart are my absolute favorites. Then there is characters like Caith Sith, that I don't give a damn.
Main character Cloud is fairly good but I have never really understand that why he is so popular. He is pretty boring character when compared to many so good ones. Red and Vincent both have more interesting story than Cloud's. Even the romance with Cloud is not very catching. Cloud and Aeris sure make a great couple and with that fact, this game have one of the most shocking moments ever in Final Fantasy. Tifa and Cloud are not very interesting as a couple.
FF7 has very interesting story with all little side stories. There is surprises and I was really interesting about Sephiroth. It is little stupid with end on Disc 2.
With many other characters, FFVII is build well. Characters have stories and real background.

Gameplay might just be the best in whole series. I like FF8 and junction system, it gives a lot of variate and challenge, but FF7 has Materia system, that works better in bigger picture. Using MP is good idea and with large amount of different materias and combinations, with red, purple, grey and yellow materia, it all work and give you a lot of freedom, how to build your team.

World is large and there is a lot to do. Many things are fun and give you a lot of freedom. There many strong monsters, secret stories and mission and even few team-mates are optional. But there is also those bad things that do not work that well.
Chocobo raising (Golden Chocobo) becomes frustrating and man items in this game are missable, which is one of the biggest things I dislike. Then there is bad design, why there is final limit break, that is one of the weakest of them all max dmg 9999, once. These things just frustrate me.

But one thing I really dislike in this game, is the graphic. Graphic do not make game, but this graphic is one I despise. That is the one thing that makes FF8 that one bit better than FF7. Graphic is good in fighting, but why the overall character graphic have to be some **** LEGO block. It has some value, but in long run, I dislike it.

With all this, you might think that FFVII is bad game, but it is not. Final Fantasy VII is one of the best PS games ever and second best Final Fantasy game ever made. Game has a lot of weapons and materia, with Battlestyle and Materia system, that make battles really fun and give a lot to do.
Every character has own style with limits and weaponry. There is many team-mates and majority of them is more than just fine, they are great.
FFVII gives so much to do and it is fun to build characters with superb materia and defeat monsters that are really hard cases. With every rare materia and weapon to be found, this is huge game and well made one. There is bad things in this game, but overall, they can be put aside.

I think this game could have used better ending and more cutscenes, with overall better graphic, but well, that is why remake is coming.
Final Fantasy VII is great game and finale is one of the best in the series. Sephiroth is villain that becomes better than any other character in the game, every way.

    + Sephiroth
    + Well made playable characters
    + Stories
    + Gameplay with Materia system
    + So much to do

    - Block style graphic
    - Missable items
    - So many bad design ideas

El sistema de combate es excelente y no cansa, a pesar de sus más de 40 horas de duración.
También hay que destacar que toca el techo gráfico de PS1.

I don't really know of a time throughout the game when Cloud wasn't angst or Barret wasn't 100% morally good but an arse at the same time. Gotta admit the story's fun but as always the critic in me, whilst playing, drifted towards optional things after all what's the point in having side orders if they don't look appealing. The result: I wanted more side quests! They were amazing and hooked me in big time. The main plot to the game starts off well but if you're like me and you're playing the PS4 edition however you've played the PSOne version in the past then you'll take notice of the lack of "insert disc blah" which actually works against the game. You see something big happens after the first disc which leads to a bit of chill out time at the beginning of the second disc which is appreciated however you don't get that feeling when it just continues. You don't get that brake, even for a few seconds, which adds so much thought into what happened and what's going to happen. I know you can stop after that point but if it just continues then you want to keep playing. The PS4 does add some cool features such as R3 which now speeds up the in game speed. When you sit through a slow 10 minute animation of several characters getting off of a train again and again it kind of gets tiring so this feature is much appreciated. We also get what I like to call the "why bloody hell would you want to press this button in any way whatsoever even if you were held at gunpoint that's a bad idea" button. Or R3 and L3 pressed together which turns off random encounters. Why is this a bad idea? No encounters=no points (xp)= screwed when fighting a boss. You also get a button that counters this by just healing you. All in all I enjoyed this game but not as much as FF X. Not the game's fault it's just that I grew up with X.
Big question: would I recommend this game to someone who hasn't played an RPG before or the current strand of RPG games.
Answer: No. FF VII is very much a veterans RPG. Don't know how RPG mechanics work? Welp then you're screwed. However if you've played FF games in the past then I do recommend this one! I'd probably say get your hands on FF X HD first to get used to the way these games work as the others sort of throw you in with no help. Unfortunately the line between traditional RPG and action RPG has been blurred since this game so those who are used to playing current RPG will definitely need some adjustment periods in order to get through this one however I enjoyed the crap out of it :D

Solid game when it first came out. Materia system was good on paper but in reality it was very limited by forced links and dev design, and at the end of the day, because the game offers no real challenge till the end, you were leveling most of that materia just because you could. Playing 19 years later can get frustrating.

Perhaps it's the excellent soundtrack; one in which every single track sticks with you for a lifetime. There's nothing generic about any of the music, it's all just sublime nostalgia nearly 20 years later. OR maybe it's just the epic story line that brought us one of the most memorable, intriguing villains in video game history, and one of the most iconic heroes of the time. There's a lot of different aspects of this gamer that make it not only a 10/10, but my favorite game, above all else. My second favorite game of all time is Starcraft - I spend hundreds of hours in UMS games in Starcraft. But the overall quality and experience of FFVII was unreal at the time. In modern times it is rare that we get a game with so much heart and soul poured into it, one with a soundtrack that sticks with you for years and years and one that has a long, interesting story to go along with a unique gameplay experience. That simply doesn't happen much anymore, if at all. FFVII is much more than a mere video game. It's a work of art and a powerhouse ofa consoel seller. How many people do you know who bought a Playstation back in the day jsut to play FFVII? That's precisely how I ended up with mine. Before that, video games were casual fun for me. FFVII left me in awe and lusting for more. It shocking my imagination into overdrive and propelled me into the world of the wonders of technology. I couldn't believe how beautiful the game was at the time. The game is simply a wonder of technology, art and storytelling for the time. And it's loved so deeply and broadly that now, even after they said it would never happen, Square is remaking this masterpiece. We can only hope that the remake brings us a fraction of the joy and wonder we had with FFVII way back in 1997. Expand

FFVII is one of those games that has an almost Sanctified reputation. Released in 1997 it was to JRPGs what Enter The Dragon was to kung fu films, taking what was a very niche interest beloved by the knowledgeable few, and turning it into THE must play gaming genre for the next few years.

The problem is, like Enter The Dragon (within its own genre), FFVII isn't really that good... It just came along at the right time and struck a chord with the 'masses', and became this legend within its own time.

It's not an inherently bad game, it's just not as good as previous games in the FF franchise and other JRPGs released subsequently also highlighted its many flaws. But because it was the first game to achieve real market penetration, it gets all the plaudits.

What's good about the game.... Well, it's certainly cinematic, using the CD-ROM format to its best advantage with decent Full Motion Video (FMV) to set up (and then pay off) the more rousing, and of course the more saddening, moments as the narrative progresses. I also like the inclusion of mini-games and the potential to effectively 'unlock' bonus weapons/armour/materia etc. (although the same things were done a hell of a lot better in FFIX!!)

Things which aren't so brilliant.... It might be down to a poor translation, but the story makes no real sense, especially towards the end when the twists are revealed and the loose ends are (supposedly) tied up. The graphics, whilst certainly impressive and diverse, haven't aged well at all. The subsequent FF games on the PS1 look so much better. And in terms of the music, it's a very mixed bag. Some music in the game is considered to be very iconic, whilst other pieces are unbelievably boring.

And what's bad......? Well, a top drawer RPG (of any kind, let alone a JRPG) is defined by its characters, the narrative, and (ultimately) by how the characters develop and grow as the story progresses. FFVII has some of the blandest and least interesting characters ever which, coupled with the nonsensical story, never draw you in. Add to that the 'Materia' system (which allows any character to equip every type of magic/skill/summon, regardless) and there's no real individuality. You tend to choose a specific group and, beyond the parts of the game which demand someone else is in the team, stick with them.
Different characters don't open up the narrative, in fact it's unbelievably linear, you never feel like there is a World out there that is existing beyond the small area of the game you're currently in.
Go back to a village at the end of the game, one you visited near the beginning, and everyone just says the same thing and are seemingly oblivious to the goings on.
It's just lazy, and disappointingly so!

Overall, this is a game that 'modern' gamers would probably look back on and wonder what all the fuss was about. For someone like me who was 21 when the game was released, I look back on it and remember being impressed by the 'leap' into the 32-bit gaming world.... But having finished the game twice, by the middle of 1998, I didn't play the game again until 2014... And having finished it a third time, suspect I won't be dusting off the CD's again for perhaps another 16 years!

This game has it all, massive customization, GREAT storyline(the best), huge plot twists, tons of hidden things only found when using an online source or the original Brady Game Guide. This is truly the only RPG game I've 100%ed and it's not because of it's simplicity, but because the storyline sucks you in and doesn't let you go.

When this games remake is released in 2017 I am seriously considering purchasing a PS4 just so I can play it. Playstation has paid for "temporary exclusive rights" so it will probably be on PS4 for a year or two until XBOX can have it, and I just can't wait that long.

The graphics were actually terrible even in their time. The Playstation was in no way a weak system, ever. But this game seemed to mistake the system for an N64 with cutscene capability, and was designed as such. Even for the Nintendo 64, a consumer would balk at the graphic design student quality textures, with terrible shading and singular drab colours. Note that the PS1 was a 128-bit system, and the N64 was a 64-bit system, and the two had wildly different graphics capabilities. Square Enix did not seem to take that into account when making this. Everything looks unpolished and deformed, with even the titles of that year all exceeding it in graphical quality by a significant degree.

The music also suffers, being below even MIDI quality at points. Even entries of the series on the same system grossly surpassed it. Hell, even Final Fantasy VI, which was on the SNES, a 16-bit cartridge system, had higher audio fidelity at points. I can only surmise Square Enix did not have a very easy time understand the system specifications or what a CD-ROM could hold.

The characters are bland, seeming like either cliches or characters from a dime store novel. Here's what you have: Brooding Character 1 w/ past regrets and obligatory big sword, Innocent young flower girl, Angry black man with machine gun arm, Brooding Character 2 with a gun, Obligatory airship engineer, Mutant dog, Cat with Megaphone, Obligatory ninja, Love interest, and last but assuredly least: Generic psychopath with obligatory big sword, watered down Oedipus Complex, Messiah Complex, and the personality of styrofoam. These are terrible even for a low budget game.

The story is nothing special, although it decides to condone eco-terrorism and make the main villian need a patsy in order to have any definite power. It basically is this: Bad company poisons the world, Captain Planet and his crew come to save the day, then main character crossdresses, and then more Captain Planeting until the story basically whittles down to two almighty balls, fetch quests spanning many hours, meaningless exposition on an already cringeworthy cast, and bad Freudian element implementation. And then apotheosis, followed by battling inside a person's brain against someone you just killed. Then sequels.

Gameplay isn't anything to write home about. Dumbed down to an insulting point, the game handholds you through poorly designed linear plot areas, makes the magic system a brainless chore, throws constant minigames at you that serve no purpose, and ultimately just wastes your time. Three discs of pain, and nothing more.

This game, most notably, has some of the most obscenely terrible quality control, as there was a debug enemy in a plot-relevant point of the game in the NTSC-J region.

I only wish there could be -1.

You basically cannot have high expectations on graphics, mainly because our modern consoles look like reality, i think we have achieved a peak in graphics nowadays, nothing can compare to these modern graphics.
However, the main role of a gamer is not complaining about graphics. That's easy indeed, our role is to contextualize a game for the period it was released. For example, i cannot give a 4 to the original super mario because of the graphics, that was the best they could do at the time, it doesn't matter if there is another, better-looking NES game, that was released 5 years later. Technology evolves continually and dramatically and even FFXIII graphics look very aged for a 2015 player (when it was released, about 5 years ago, it looked like a film). So we are in 1997. The environmental graphics are pre-rendered and let me say that(even today) they look beautiful. The character's graphichs, however, aren't that good. They barely resemble a person, but i honestly don't think this is important. Final Fantasy VII world is beautifully constructed, it has a lot of places, villages and cities, forests, caves, all very well designed and rendered. Villages look alive, tons of things to do, places to explore, who could ask for more?
Characters and story are probably the best part of FFVII. Characters are more complex than they appear on first sight. Even the apparently most stupid character in our party has his own dreams, likes, dislikes, loves and interests, and a story behind that defines and fits him/her perfectly.
Story is very good, full of plot-twists, complex but well explained and music...well, Nobuo Uematsu is a genius of soundtrack... what are you expecting from him?
Overall, this game is truly a masterpiece in every aspect. Great story, Great combat system, Great Music, Great graphics. Do yourself a favor and play it if you've never done it. You won't be disappointed!

without doubt the best game ever made. The story, character and music are unchallenged even today. Many argue that it is due to nostalgia. let me say. it isn't. I have played countless of rpgs before ff7. Secret of man, chrono trigger, breath of fire etc.. are extremely good rpgs. Then ff7 came. A game like no other. I eagerly await the announced remake=)

Almost 20 years ago I got my first part time job, and spent my very first paycheck to buy FF7. I didn't even own a Playstation at the time, I just got the game because it was the most beautiful thing ever made that would ensure I'd save up money from my new job to buy the PS1 with. And it was worth it. FF7 was simply the greatest game of it's generation.

Sure, other PS1 games had better graphics... years later when the PS1 had been pushed to it's limit. But FF7 was the best of the best at the time it was made.

Ignore the hipsters who hate things just because the masses enjoy it. There is a reason FF7 is considered one of if not the greatest Final Fantasy games ever made. It pretty much single handedly created the US market for JRPGs.

And remember, just because a slightly emo main RPG character is cliche these days, this is the game they were all trying to copy. The original is never cliche, no matter how overused the concepts became afterwards.

FF7 was a generation defining game, like Pong. If you can get past the graphics these days (they are unbelievably crude by today's standards), this is a must play. If you can't get past the graphics, well then I can only assume you only care about shiny graphics and there's always Fast and Furious N+1 for you.

I really cannot understand all of the praise which this game gets, in my opinion it is average at best.

A poor storyline, sub par graphics (even for when it was released nearly 15 years ago), terrible voice acting, painful inventory system. There are some redeeming features, such as the hard battle encounters, numerous side quests and the large number of characters, but they just cant

I have finished the game twice now, with a gap of over 10 years in between, and it hasn't aged well

This is the most memorable game you can find, and the best. There are so many epic characters, fantastic gameplay, lovely world map, and AWESOME story!

You have many interesting and epic hours if you want to do the story, and even more fun hours if you want to do all of the side quests. This game has also very high replay value, because when you are finished with the game, you will miss

The soundtrack on this game is a Masterpiece, you will love it! There are many emotional parts on this game, that is hard to forget. I know the graphics are not perfect, but it's very nostalgic!

This is the greatest game of all time in my personal opinion. Play this game NOW!

One of the best if not the best RPG ever created. The game play is easy and intuitive and yet fun, the story and the atmosphere are engaging, the character development is cured. Every other rpg owes to FF7 a great debt

This game may be the benchmark that all other story-based games can be compared to and modeled after. The storyline keeps you hooked, wanting to play more and more despite your body telling you that you need sleep and food.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's not much to be said about this timeless masterpiece that hasn't already been said. FFVII takes all of the ingredients which were good in the SNES entries and brought them to the PS. There's nothing this game lacks and whether one finds the graphics outdated or to "have aged badly" is a matter of taste, not fact. From the inspiring materia system to the optional characters, from the open world with hidden secrets to an amusement park with dozens of minigames, from the epic plot with twists never seen before in video games... It is silly how much backstory a game can have when you need atleast 3 playthroughs to remember it all. When I bought the PSone classic port version of the game from PSN and played the game again I was delighted to notice that Aerith notes in the beginning of the game that "there's this materia" she has which is "useless", only to remember that it is the precise materia that will save the world later on in the game.

All the characters have well-developed motives and each are strengthened by a brilliant leitmotif ala Nobuo Uematsu. The optional bosses are fun to run with challenge runs and are in fact rather difficult if one doesn't pay attention to his/her character builds and materia use.

This is a game that never will be forgotten.
