Final Fantasy VII is not flawless but it is easily one of the most ambitious and compelling games I have ever played. The sheer scope and ambition puts even other quality RPGs to shame and there are very good reasons why it is still considered a masterpiece. There are certain aspects of the game that haven't aged well but that does not make the game overrated. If anything I would say FFVII is underrated because to this day there is no other Final Fantasy game that dared to attempt so much. It combines so many ideas and genres in a way that makes sense. The story is epic, complex, and well crafted yet very different from other RPGs that came before it. There are some plot holes and a few parts are convoluted but overall it is very well thought out and is far deeper than most game stories. The characters are iconic, well developed and compelling. The soundtrack remains in the conversation for the best of all time. The visuals have aged very poorly but the visual concepts themselves are still distinct and appealing. I can still remember the first posters when the game launched and there are so many moments throughout the game that are immediately recognizable. The gameplay itself may seem primitive now but at the time it attempted to mix many gameplay elements. I still can't think of any other RPGs that allow you to ride motorcycles, birds, airships and submarines all in one game. There is so much that the game does well that the areas that it falls short are easily overshadowed. I don't think it is perfect or the best game of all time but if they did the Remake right and fixed the few flaws it could be the best of all time.

Gameplay 8 - While the battle system starts off quite primitive, it layers new elements in a satisfying way and by late in the game there are actually a lot of ways to approach combat. Each character has many limit breaks that keep things interesting and while there aren't as many summonings as in FFVI they are far more cinematic. The thing that sets the gameplay apart from other games in the series is that there are so many gameplay elements outside of combat. There are stealth sections, puzzle sections, motor cycle chases and even submarine exploration. The game even has sim elements.

Story/Progression 10 - The story is the best part of FFVII. Even though it isn't perfect, I still think it is one of the best video game stories of all time because of how many great ideas it blends together and how it does things that I haven't seen in a game before or since. It has one of the most iconic openings in a game and from there it immediately drags you into a world that is bizarre and yet quickly understandable because of how well developed all the ideas are. It isn't like any other stories in the series but at the same time it still has a familiarity to it. It has so many themes that mix into the gameplay, world, magic system and lore. It has one of the best villains in fiction yet ultimately even Sephiroth is not the central problem within the story, he is just a conduit for bigger environmental and social problem. He is not a dark lord, he is a complex person dealing with his own problems that are understandable because of the complex circumstances of his life. I could discuss the story of FFVII all day and still have more to say about it. It does have moments that are convoluted but I can't think of many game stories that offer more.

World 8 - The world is vast, complex and full of variety. Every location offers something new and memorable. Unlike most RPGs that came before it, the locations are all unique and even the way you interact with them can be different. It can be a bit annoying to traverse sometime, the game does make you back track a lot and sometimes getting from place to place is not intuitive. The world building is great though, it feels like each location in the game serves a believable purpose. Some of the areas seem a little out of place and messy in terms of their design but that also adds a sense of realism to the game.

Characters 10 - There is a reason why FFVII has some of the most memorable characters in gaming history. Not only are the characters iconic looking they are also very well fleshed out. Sephiroth isn't just just a badass with a big sword, his story is incredibly complex and layered. His own journey is full of twists and turns even more so than the protagonists. He evolves and earns his place in the story rather than simply existing as the final obstacle like so many other game villains. Cloud is also far more than just an icon, his story is one of the most unique of any Final Fantasy hero. His very identity is at the heart of his character arc and the story is as much about him discovering himself as it is saving the world. Unlike most stories that have a pretty straight forward female lead/love interest, FFVII once again breaks convention. Aerith and Tifa are both very well developed and both are more than they initially seem.

The story is engaging and deep, there are many story arcs that combine with each other, and the mystery goes till the end of the playthrough.
The game is known from one of the biggest plot twists in the history of the video games, and it's still valid in 2023 (of course if you avoided spoilers).
The mechanics are classic-JRPG, turn-based fights, which could be repetitive, especially with random encounters, but honestly, you don't have to grind, if you don't want to.

FF7 showed the western world that the story in the RPG can be written very well, immense and compelling. Also, let's not forget about brilliant soundtrack made by one and only Nubou Uematsu. One of the best soundtracks in video game history, up to this date. The game is packed with mini-games, I don't think there's so much diverse content in any other Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy VII for sure is one of the best RPG adventures of all time.
If you can stand dated graphics and some gameplay mechanics, such as platforming segments, it's perfect 10/10.

And do me a favour, if you like this game...try to get a glimpse at Grandia. They are like prodigy siblings...one being the darker sinister, the other the light heartedly, joyful one.

It's a good game but overhyped nonetheless. The plot and world might be great, but I can't get truly immersed and take anything seriously when characters look like LEGO figures instead of actual human beings. I liked FF 8 more for that reason.

That being said, if you include the other games and movies in the Final Fantasy VII universe, it gives the characters a life of their own. When the Final Fantasy VII story is viewed as a whole, it is one of my favorites of all time. The graphics were amazing for their day, but are older than a majority of the people writing reviews. If played on PC, there are various mods that help smooth the character models out tremendously. The music is still among the best ever composed for a game, my favorite being Jenova's theme. If you are not fond of the low quality music, there are mods to replace the music faithfully with high fidelity versions of the songs. The original PlayStation version actually had better quality music than what is available with most of the ports even today. When the remake is released, I hope for dual modes of combat, turn based slow combat for people like me to play games to relax, and active action combat for those who prefer that style. The political and philosophical parallels still apply today, maybe even more so. Like all great works of art, the metaphors and symbolism in the game could literally be studied for years and still not fully explore their meaning. Expand

Moments later, our hero, still unnamed, got off a train with the purpose of destroying a mako energy reactor, something that was being detrimental to the health of the planet. In this way we got into the skin of a former soldier who had become a kind of terrorist, but really was a mercenary who works for Avalancha, a formation that fought against the Shinra organization. The emotion of these first minutes would catch us instantly, but everything that was to come was going to hook us much more to the command of our console (or computer keyboard, although I prefer the PSX version). The fight to save the planet was going to lead us to discover a man named Sephirot, ex-soldier with a mysterious past, who was much more powerful than any enemy seen before, and who would not hesitate to destroy everything in his path in the face of dementia...

I have no doubt that the system of subjects, invocations, objects, limits is the best system ever created in an RPG. This also offers plenty of freedom of operation, as well as fun and tension in every fight that is impossible not to enjoy and praise. We managed a Cloud in the environment for which we advanced, we moved by the pre-rendered funds and in the moment in which we had to fight, the screen changed. We went from polygonal and anarchic characters -virtually speaking-, to a much more balanced and compensated in combat, where we did manage all the members of our team.

As we were discovering locations and advancing in the plot, we could move around the map with complete freedom, although this depended on the means of transport that we had. With the boogie we could cross small rivers, which was an advance compared to the race on foot; with the ship "Strong Wind" we could explore almost any location on the map... And I say almost, because we would have to use the chocobos (a kind of colored ostriches) to access the last corners of the planet, where we would be waiting for succulents rewards.

Final Fantasy VII at the time of its release, certain aspects were seen as revolutionary, a plot that focused on the development of the characters, a unique battle system and 3D graphics...

To finish with this brief summary about Final Fantasy VII, I am going to talk about the duration of the title, since the game can last 150 hours if we propose to complete all the challenges, for example kill the "Weapons" of the planet by which we move, which are huge enemies that will make things very difficult, get all the materials, the chocobos cited or learn all the parallel stories that lead to Sephirot, Shinra and Cloud. I also want to highlight the excellent soundtrack, orchestrated, with unique melodies, as well as some more special ones for romantic, sad, happy, relaxed or tension moments.

And I will not talk about the scenes, which is something that cannot explained by words and one should witness them with one's own eyes.

The greatest masterpiece ever delivered by the world of video games.

There are a small handful of games that no matter how many times I play them or how much time passes since I first played them, they still evoke the same reaction from me every time. These are the best games ever made and FF7 is one of them.

It's important to note that after 21 years of age this game can still stand up in terms of storytelling and gameplay even after time has rendered its graphics mostly archaic. 21 years. It's difficult for an entertainment product of any kind to have that level of longevity. Even movies struggle to not age badly after that sort of period of time but FF7 manages it.

The storyline ebbs and flows brilliantly, leading you from one set piece to another in a way that keeps you wanting to find out more even when you practically know the script by heart. The characters make you empathize with them and their missions and despite the odd bit of script now reading a little poorly (in part due to translation issues) you find yourself rooting for them the same way every time.

The gameplay system in this is my favorite amongst the FF series. It's not needlessly complex but rewards an experienced player for knowing its ins and outs. It's accessible but nuanced. You could play this game slapping any materia in any weapon or you can garner the knowledge to make set ups and annihilate everything you face. The amazing thing is that it never feels less satisfying to do every time. In my recent playthrough, racing through it all somewhat it still felt satisfying to unleash limit breaks and finally break over 1000hp per hit. It still felt rewarding to level up both yourself and your materia to new heights and attack bosses with ferocity. It takes a very special sort of game to be able to do that. I think part of it is what the game gives you, it gives you bit by calculated bit. You can jump the gun here and there if you know how but by and large its that waiting and the results of that waiting that become addictive.

Graphically, in its day, this was stunning. The mixture of FMV backgrounds with the game graphics on the front had been done before but it wasn't just the graphics but the brilliance of the design. Midgar still looks remarkable to this day. The Golden Saucer also. Towns felt alive. There was so much to see and to do in each of them they never just felt like places the designers could plonk down some shops and a save point.

I struggle to think of a more iconic game soundtrack than this one. There are so many themes from this that are a huge part of gaming history. The opening strains of the battle theme or even better the boss theme. The WEAPON theme, Aeris' theme. They have all stood the test of time fantastically well. The only thing I can consider comparable is the soundtrack to Super Mario 64. Between the two of them they're amongst the best loved and remembered scores to gaming ever.

The scale of the game back in the late 90's was unbelievable. A three disc game was pretty much unheard of back then and the game is an easy 20 to 30 hours even when you know every part of it by heart. There is a wealth of things to see and do and yeah modern RPGs may dwarf its content you only have to look at what else was around in 1997 to realize just how incredible of an accomplishment this game was from a technical standpoint, a gameplay stand point, a writing stand point, a musical stand point. It simply ticked every box.

I've played the vast bulk of the FF series and I never felt they got it this right again. FF8 made this look arcane graphically but the story was all over the place, the draw system was flawed, as was the GF and Limit Break set ups. They seemed to want to always re-invent the wheel which is my major gripe with it. Most of 7 was perfect and a few tweaks what was already there would have benefited the series immensely. Instead they kept chopping and changing and as such, though it's just persona opinion, they never reached this height again. Each game before or after this has had plot work that made me stop caring or characters that were just too zany. Whilst I know I'm talking about a game where a cat rides a gigantic stuffed toy in battle wielding a megaphone that always felt like the exception to the rule. The rest of it was fantasy but in its own vein believable and relatable and that is what made the story and it's characters so brilliant, so timeless.

Once every year or so I'll fire this up and it draws me in every single time. I'm sat here now 15 hours into a new play through when I have a backlog of vastly technologically advanced games to be playing but there is something to be said for the charm and I suppose above all the nostalgia that FF7 invokes in me. It's a brilliant game, yes, but it reminds me of my childhood and in turn reminds me just what a brilliant medium of entertainment video games can be at their finest.

And this is one of the very finest.

Sorry if that was a spoiler but if you haven't played FFVII yet, you're no gamer, anyway. ;) Just kidding, of course. Overall this will be a great experience for anyone. Expand

    Polygonal Perfection

Final Fantasy 7 is one of those games we've all sort of unanimously agreed in horribly overrated, but still one of the best games we've ever played. Its usage of everything that made the previous games so special combined with an interpersonal story about identity and death make it something worthy of recognition.

Much like the rest of the PS1 era, FF7 is more about its characters than anything else. Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith and everybody make this game what it is, even the disgustingly janky polygonal art style can't ruin how beautifully these characters are written, even the optional characters, Yuffie and Vincent are written in such a way you'd be mistaken for forgetting they're optional, hell Vincent got his own spin off for Seventh Heavens sake. Though everybody is written immaculately, Cloud is where this writing shines, though FF9 is my favourite, even I must yield to how amazing Clouds writing his. His story revolves around his identity and the identity crisis he goes through as a result of the story and events before it, I won't spoil it here because I think it's something you really should experience first hand, particularly through this game, since the Remake kinda spoils it early on and it's a reveal better placed later in the story.

Combat is Final Fantasy combat, not much to say really, it feels good and it's as fun as turn based can be but if it doesn't please you, luckily the HD Remaster has Cheats that let you bypass the combat and just enjoy the story, though I do recommend you at least give it a go and see if you like it first.

The music in FF7 is truly amazing, Uematsu really outdid himself with 7's ost, everything from Bombing Mission to One-Winged Angel is a delight, every time I go back and play this game I always find myself humming along to The Oppressed or The Turks, and no matter how many times I get into Random Encounter fights, Fight On! never gets old, and hey the entire OST is on Spotify now, so we can finally headbang to Those Who Fight Further on the train... As long as you don't mind the glaring anyway.

The story is somewhat unremarkable when taken on its own, it's good, just not GREAT, however when combined with the Prequel game Crisis Core and the Sequel movie Advent Children, it really is quite special, I recommend playing FF7 proper first, then at some point going through again with Crisis Core and Advent Children on either side of the game, it really does make it much more engrossing.

My only real complaint is... the graphics, good god this game is ugly, the shift from the NES to the PS1 was not kind to poor old FF7, character models look ridiculous with their stupid blocky stub hands and their dead expressions, especially when placed right between FF6 which looks stunning and is real eye candy to those of us who like Sprite based graphics, and FF8 which didn't look great when it released, but with the HD Remaster on modern hardware, really does look quite beautiful, it just exemplifies how atrocious FF7 looks.

Overall, despite its shortcomings, FF7 is still an easy 10 in my mind, perhaps its my own bias because FF7 was the first proper JRPG I played, or maybe I've simply been indoctrinated by the internets love of this game, whatever the case, I truly do love Final Fantasy 7 and urge you all to play the original at least once.

First things first, while I don't believe it is a masterpiece I still think it a great JRPG title and a must-play for fans of the genre.

The story felt mind-blowing at times and had an interesting villain with a great design but at times also felt too sentimental and far-fetched. Overall still great though. The open-ending could have been better but it was a good conclusion but left a few questions unanswered.
The characters are quite likable and interesting and the main party feels very diverse. Sometimes I felt like the characters could have been explored more though side-quests and dialogue but they still had solid personalities. I also enjoyed that some of the characters were pretty comical.
The turn-based combat was also enjoyable and it still felt flesh although a bunch of enemy designs and skills felt really random and out of place. That's one of my main complaints and what holds the score down the most.

The bottom line is: if you're a JRPG fan you should definitely play this one at least once. The story has a solid length and there are tons of side quests and stuff to do. The experience and the characters will stick with you although the writing could have been better in some occasions and the enemy designs and skills could have been more serious.

Once I actually bothered to learn the Materia system I enjoyed it much more. It was full n moving around peoples Materia and creating the best team I could. I think story wise it was great. Some confusing moments for sure, but it didn't bother me too much as I don't need to understand every detail personally. (I've played kingdom hearts games it doesn't get more confusing than that). One problem I had with the game was figuring out where to go. I liked the pre rendered backgrounds...but sometimes they made navigating where to go hard and confusing. There were multiple parts in the game where I needed a guide to know where/how to go. Maybe that's just me though. Random encounters made that process even more stressful. But that was really the only major flaw I could think of with the game. I think once I got the highwind I didn't have any problems with that actually. It made navigating the world faster, easier, and more fun. I actually came to love the graphics personally. Once I got highwind I explored the workd more, got all level 4 limit breaks and all ultimate weapons for cloud Tifa and cid, who were my 3 favorite characters. The blocky character designs and 3D backgrounds. At first glance some people may say they are ugly, but to me they had a unique charm that I've seen no other game have. The word was so fun and full of life, I think the soundtrack was the biggest part of this. The soundtrack of this game is one of the best I've ever heard honestly. Ahead on our way, the main theme, Aerith theme, tifas theme, and one winged angel were my favorites. I LOVED the game. I'd say it was incredible considering it's 23 years old! In conclusion, I would personally say it's definitely worth a playthrough in 2020. I played it without any mods, just how it was on the PlayStation 1 and t was so much fun! Final Fantasy VII is truly a timeless game. Even after 20 years, it's still regarded as one of, if not THE greatest RPG of all time. Even after 20 years, it's still regarded as one of, if not THE greatest RPG of all time. While I definitely don't agree with that statement, I can't argue against the massive impact that this game has had on the industry. I do think that the game has quite a few flaws, and some really big ones at that, but as a whole, it's a really great time. As much as I love the characters, story, and music, the highlight of FFVII is easily the Materia system. It's simply a ton of fun to experiment with different materia combinations, just to see what happens. Like, do you want to turn your enemies into frogs with every hit? Just throw an Added Effect + Transform on your weapon and there you go! Or would you rather inflict instant death upon every hit? Well, an Added Effect + Destruct will get the job done. I seriously cannot emphasize how much customization you have over your characters with materia. It makes the game worth playing just by itself. Now, as much as I absolutely love the majority of FFVII, there are some serious problems that the game has. My biggest issue with the game is how the story is presented. Now, don't get me wrong, the story of FFVII is great. Genuinely one of the best in the series. My issue is how they decide to tell it. At multiple points in the game, everything just screeches to a halt, and a plot-dump of information is told all at once. Not only that, but they decide to tell it in a somewhat unorthodox, kinda vague way. I get what they're trying to do, they're trying to tell the story in a way that makes you think "Wow, that was such an interesting way they did that!" But they do such a poor job of explaining things, that you're more than likely left confused at what happened. I appreciate the effort of them trying to explain the story in a different way, but I think they could've handled it better. However, once you do understand the story, it truly is great. I personally think FFVI has the best story in the series, but this one comes close. In short, I really love this game. There are some aspects about it that I realllllly dislike, but the good very much outweighs the bad. If you've never played FFVII, I really do recommend it, it's a game that I think everyone should try at least once. It's amazing at best, and inoffensive at worst. Expand

The world is probably the best part, Midgar is one of the most creative places I've ever seen in gaming. And the exploration! It still blows my mind that you could go down an alleyway and then go through an entire part of the story that you otherwise wouldn't even know about. This feeds your mind to explore every nook and cranny that you find.

The music is amazing as well, never have I ever seen a game encapsulate a moment more than this game's music, from that iconic opening scene from Midgar to running around the Shinra building and fighting freaking giant robots on a crashing elevator.

THE MINIGAMES ARE SO WELL MADE! It just continued to blow my mind more and more how much this game pushes its limits, when I felt and saw that motorcycle minigame nearing the end of Midgar, now that was insane.

I could go on and on about this game and how amazing it is, if you haven't played this game, you NEED to.

    Cheers.

Fantastic game, it has a very good story, striking scenes that make anyone feel emotional, I know that the graphics are not the best, but that doesn’t take away the note of this incredible game! 10/10

My favorite Final Fantasy game. My first FF game too. I loved every second of it. I don't remember any other game that I've cried so hard like this one. The game that changed everything.

Masterpiece! A pillar of the videogames' history! An emotional story. Final Fantasy VII it's not just a game, it's a life expirience, an expirience that EVERYONE must try least once.

I played the PS1 version just a little while ago and I ADORED it! the music, the characters, the story, every little thing really touched me. I just simply loved everything about it, and Im usually one to be a contrarian. I dont want to spoil anything at all just so you go play it yourself!

This game spanks. Been my favorite since it came out.

I met a fellow gamer girl recently, we got on well until I asked what her favorite FF games were and she listed them backwards with 7 as her least favorite.

That's when I knew it wasn't gonna work out.

One of the best games ever made. Easy. The story is amazing. The characters are awesome, with lots of party members to choose from. Music is some of the most memorable of all time. Chocobo breeding and racing! This game is simply incredible.

My second favorite in the FF franchise. I love the setting and characters, the materia system, the limit breaks, the side content, and music.
Cons: Slow paced battles especially with summons, graphics don't age well and you sometimes can't see where to go, and bosses aren't unique.

Still, the best game I have ever played. I have replayed this game at least 7 times over the years. And that is is at least 50+ hours each run. I actually teared up at some moments. This game defined me as a person and a gamer as I was growing up as a kid, as what I hope to expect in other RPGs and final fantasy's, but none have. Expand

I'm so glad that I've finally experienced this legendary game, it's definitely the best old school Final Fantasy game I've played.

The music is fantastic and very iconic, One-Winged Angel is awesome and gave me goosebumps.

The only things I disliked about the game are the annoying minigames that affect the pacing, and the unnecessary filler in the middle of the game, but other than that there isn't anything else that bothered me that much.

Even after all those years, this game managed to surprise me and even make me feel emotional, it's such a big game, and probably even a masterpiece for its time, I'm honestly impressed.

    Final Rating: "Amazing" ~ 9/10.

The art is also great. From the characters and objects, to all the different environments, and tiny details in the houses, I just think it looks so *cool*. The cut scenes have also aged somewhat, but still very charming to see.
I played the game on the switch, which has a few useful features such as 3x speed, and turning off random encounters. Overall a great game, should definitely be played!
