This is as unsettling and absorbing an adventure as you could hope for.
-
With eye-popping graphics and outrageous sound effects, Alone in the Dark excels at being creepy.
-
Total Video GamesTruly a fantastic game and shines like a diamond stone. With the limitations of the PlayStation, the developers have still managed to cram every last bit of detail into this one. Go out a buy it. Now!

The prerendered scenery would be stunningly beautiful if it wasnt so darn creepyits some of the best scenery on the PlayStation.
-
This game is tough but from my general experience, this is what survival horror games are all about.
-
It does enough things right to merit the attention of the few gamers still willing to put up with 32-bit "RE" gameplay (circa 1996) in the year 2001.
-
An above average survival horror game with a few new twists and a compelling story.
-
Even with the graphical limitations of the PS One, the game still looked good enough to scare the wits out of us, and often seemed more threatening and tense than the "Resident Evil" games.
-
Graphically the game is unequaled on the PSone, but things like poor scripting, painful voice acting and tired puzzle elements reduce the overall appeal significantly.
-
a satisfying horror game with many of the sinister elements that made the original so good. But its failure to do anything new that "Resident Evil" hasn't already done (other than a cool flashlight) leaves this zombie hungering for something more. Brains, anyone?
-
It has enough graphical flair, intriguing storylines, and just down right creepiness, to make you forget this is being played on a 6 year old system.
-
Even with its dodgy graphics and other niggling problems, Alone in the Dark will still make you jump - even with the lights on.
-
AID:TNN comes off, despite its graphical wizardry, a little sophomoric. The majority of the cinematic cuts and voice acting are god-awful-bad, and not even in that charming, maybe-they-meant-it, B-movie Resident Evil way.
-
With versions in the works for both the PlayStation 2 and the Dreamcast, though, owners of multiple consoles are probably better off waiting for the graphical enhancement that will come with a more powerful console.
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyIllogical puzzles, vague directions and objects almost impossible to spot against the backgrounds cause you to waste too much time wandering the same rooms again and again. [Sept 2001, p.147]
