May 9, 2016Each individual piece of the game does not do anything innovative or new, but together it creates an experience that is unmatched even outside of the platform.
-
Apr 26, 2016Really, it's hard to find anything wrong with Severed. It obliterated my conceptions of how a touch-based game can play, it looks breathtaking, and it gave me a reason to break out my Vita.
-
Apr 26, 2016DrinkBox has really outdone themselves, and have made an absolute classic.
-
Apr 26, 2016Severed is quite simply a handheld tour de force without equal.
-
Apr 26, 2016As challenging as it is rewarding, Severed is a reason to dust of your PS Vita and get slashing.
-
Jun 7, 2016Severed is not without its share of flaws, but they're overwhelmed by the amazing atmosphere that creates tension and even fear while you're slicing you way through this Dia de los Muertos-inspired adventure.
-
May 30, 2016Severed is a great game, drawing from the classic dungeon crawling adventures, with an interesting gameplay model and unique visuals. Unfortunately, full playthrough is a little bit too short - it's a pity to part with such a good production after seven hours of fun.
-
May 23, 2016An amazing video game for a dead device. We are glad that Drinkbox Studio decided to release this Vita exclusive for us. Severed is the PS Vita's swan song.
-
May 18, 2016Severed sports a solid story and a great combat system.
-
May 16, 2016If this is to be the Vita’s swansong, it’s a fantastic one.
-
May 10, 2016Severed is the kind of game that comes along once a generation, and helps define a console.
-
May 8, 2016Severed is a modern take on the old-school drpg genre. If you own a PS Vita, you should definitely own Severed.
-
May 4, 2016After all, a Vita exclusive first person dungeon crawler RPG with touch controlled combat seems rather long in the genre definition, and a rather insane proposition all things considered. However, despite all odds, they’ve managed to craft a title featuring a fantastic world that begs to be explored, and a combat engine that’s intuitive and the finest use of touch controls since Tearaway.
-
May 3, 2016There are few titles more deserving of being called one of the truly essential experiences for the Vita than Severed. If you own the latest PlayStation handheld, do yourself a favor and pick this up: you won't regret it.
-
Apr 26, 2016DrinkBox has succeeded in not only making a fantastic game, but also making the PlayStation Vita relevant again in a time where most have left it for dead. Severed is the call to all gamers to dig out their dusty Vitas once more, as the neglected handheld has quietly acquired one of the must-have games of 2016.
-
Apr 26, 2016Grievances aside, Severed is loaded with ambition and is so slick, stylish, and damn pretty it'll melt your eyeballs.
-
Apr 26, 2016Severed is a game that's a perfect fit for the Vita, and with Drinkbox's special sauce mixed into the wound it's one bloodbath you won't want to miss.
-
Apr 26, 2016If Severed does turn out to be the Vita’s swan song, Sony can hang its hat knowing that the Vita’s last hurrah was a grade-A banger from a premier independent developer.
-
Apr 26, 2016The promise of the Vita was console-quality experiences on the go, but Severed isn't that. Rather, it's the sort of expertly executed cocktail of mechanics that would work as well on a comparatively diminutive smartphone screen. So while Severed may be something of a swan song for the Vita, it's also a reminder that great games are bigger and more lasting than the platforms that contain them.
-
Apr 26, 2016With an emotional story and touch-based combat that feels both clever and natural, Severed is an excellent game that will stick with you long after you’ve finished playing.
-
Apr 26, 2016At the end of the day – Vita exclusive or not – Severed is a joy to play, a pleasure to explore and a bloody great game in its own right and because of this, it is very much deserving of your time, money and attention.
-
Apr 26, 2016As was the case with Guacamelee, let's hope that Drinkbox decide to publish versions of this fine old school RPG for other platforms than the Vita as well.
-
Apr 27, 2016Severed is one of the best PS Vita games ever, and the touch controls are used well. The game is a constant surprise full of smart gameplay features, items and magical powers. It is very fun to explore this world as it keeps on challenging you until the end.
-
Apr 26, 2016Quotation forthcoming.
-
May 3, 2016Severed is a great experience that comes perilously close to overstaying its welcome.
-
Apr 29, 2016An interesting dungeon crawler with a distinctive artdesign and tight touch controls. This is the kind of game that makes it worthwhile for Vita owners to be patient.
-
Apr 26, 2016Atmospheric, deep and challenging, Severed is a great addition to the PlayStation Vita catalog.
-
Apr 26, 2016Severed is an interesting mix between the exploration of classic dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Master and a combat system inspired by recent mobile games like Fruit Ninja and Infinity Blade. A good way to add more value to your PS Vita. The game is maybe just a bit too hard.
-
Apr 26, 2016DrinkBox Studios pushes the boundaries on the Vita’s unique hardware once again. Although from a technical perspective it occasionally lets them down, Severed’s unique combat system and beautiful art style carry the day on what is a fun, if not short-lived, dungeon crawler.
-
Apr 26, 2016Though my playthrough only lasted around five hours, I wanted more. Shortly after I finished the story, I dove back in to explore every path I didn’t already venture down with my new powers in tow. The draw to keep playing and exploring immediately after I finished is a testament to how much I enjoyed Severed.
-
Apr 28, 2016Like I said, the combat was outstanding, and the world in which it takes place is gorgeous and vibrant. Not only that, as a Vita diehard, it pains me to give an exclusive for the system anything other than a rave review. But I have to be honest here — and the unfortunate truth is, as good as Severed may be, it's hard to shake the feeling that it could've been even better.
-
Apr 27, 2016Severed is a good touch game with a curious and innovative combat system that includes interesting mechanics. On the other side, Severed is a very good short game that shines on its metroidvania style and the environmental puzzles design.
-
Apr 26, 2016Severed is Drinkbox Studios' vision of how the dungeon crawlers should be updated. A "metroidvania" adventure that's pure fun, with a fantastic combat system (that focuses on Vita's touch sensitive screen) and some mechanics, like the limbs and guts amputations, that make it a different experience. It's a game that, once it hooks you up, won't release until you finish it. A 8-9 hour trip that will make your Vita sing.
-
Apr 26, 2016Interesting dungeon crawler that looks pretty good but doesn't last enough to be excellent. Besides that, it's almost too easy, even though it's cheap.
-
Apr 26, 2016If a colorful, morbid, corporeal, dungeon-crawling Punch-Out!! isn't sweet enough to sell Severed, consider it a vision of a world where the PlayStation Vita remained a stronghold of original and endearing creation.

Playstation Official Magazine AustraliaJun 9, 2016Severed is an unusual game that remains compulsively fascinating, making full use of PS Vita’s strengths – feeling like it couldn’t exist anywhere else – to craft a quietly moving tale. [July 2016, p77]
-
May 4, 2016Severed is a great game with a lot of depth that will have you thinking about it for a long time to come.
-
Apr 29, 2016Severed is exactly what you would expect to see on PS Vita more often. What we expected to see, to be fair. Something different, something new, that uses the console in a very smart way, just like Tearaway did a few years ago.
-
Apr 29, 2016Although definitely still a niche title, Severed takes one of the oldest and inaccessible genres in video games and reinvigorates it, giving it much wider appeal than its contemporaries such as Demon Gaze and Operation Abyss.
-
Apr 28, 2016A fantastically strange and unique first person adventure that manages to make touchscreen controls seem fresh and interesting again.
-
Apr 27, 2016An incredible eleventh-hour treat for fans who have invested their time and money into the handheld. If you enjoyed Guacamelee!, you’ll find a lot of what you loved in that game has returned. Vibrant colors with a unique “diorama” artstyle really pop off the screen, and its inventive gameplay successfully combines touch-twitch antics and old-fashioned role playing.
-
Apr 26, 2016Severed is very original and engaging, but it's hard to tell what audience it is addressed to. If you want to know what dungeon crawling, a touch of RPG and a heavy dose of touch screen feels like, Severed is your game.
-
Apr 26, 2016Top marks to Drinkbox for daring to be different, and using the PS Vita's touch screen to create a unique gestural combat system. The action can be somewhat repetitive at times, but Severed's story is compelling enough to keep driving you on. That, combined with the beautiful-looking graphics deliver a dungeon crawler that's well worth experiencing.
-
Apr 26, 2016Severed is a fresh and interesting dungeon crawler from Guacamelee!’s developers Drinkbox Studios. A little bit easier than expected, it's filled with a solid gameplay mechanics and a great use of Vita’s touch screen, Severed is definitely one of the best indies of 2016.
-
Apr 26, 2016It takes a while to grasp, but once the game picks up steam, it becomes an intriguing experience that's unlike any other game on Vita to date.
-
Apr 26, 2016Across Severed’s seven or so hours, you get to experience some of the best touch screen gaming around.
-
Apr 26, 2016Severed takes a gimmick in touch-based combat and actually manages to successfully wrap an entertaining game around it. The eerie, ambiguous, yet beautiful, world helps but I found that enough new aspects were added to the combat to keep it interesting until the very end. If this is the Vita’s swansong then it’s going out on a wonderful note.
-
Apr 26, 2016Drinkbox Studios’ Severed is a touch-based, action RPG with an interesting premise, incredible visuals, and fun gameplay that simply overstays its welcome a little.
-
Apr 26, 2016While a touch-focused first person dungeon crawler might sound crazy on paper, Severed's unique brand of combat is as deep as it is engaging. Oh, and the visuals and soundtrack are bonkers to boot.
-
Apr 26, 2016Overall, Severed does a lot of good with its excellent and challenging combat, intricate dungeon maps full of collectibles, unique and visceral upgrade system, and a fantastic presentation.
-
Apr 29, 2016Quotation forthcoming.
-
Jun 29, 2016Though its bewitching world and stimulating combat are brought down by some counterintuitive mechanics, it’s still a provocative tale about fate and the human condition that left me contemplating what it really means to be part of a family, and the sacrifices we make for the sake of those we love.
-
May 19, 2016You have to commend Severed for using the Vita's touchscreen heavily for its gameplay. And while that use of the system works and is mostly enjoyable, it's not always entertaining.
-
May 6, 2016Severed is a story about love. A girl’s love of her family and Drinkbox’s love for Vita. Repetitive combat and a tough difficulty spike limit the enjoyment, but there’s no reason every Vita owner shouldn’t at least give it a go.
-
May 4, 2016Vita owners thirsty for new titles will rightly give an arm and a leg for this one, but they should know ahead of time that it can be hard on the ol' swipin' appendages.
-
Apr 26, 2016Severed is an unconventional turn-based RPG where the young Sasha will have to find out what happened to her family. It is a dramatic story with personality, but lacks consistent gameplay mechanics and a proper combat system.
-
Apr 26, 2016Severed starts as a fun take on touch combat, but ends as a tiring journey that neglects its cooler features.
-
Edge MagazineJul 5, 2016A frustrating step backwards for a studio that can do better. [July 2016, p.122]
-
May 3, 2016The unique concept should be applauded, but can't keep the game from becoming stale after a while. Unfortunately, flawed input registration drags the experience down even further.
-
Apr 26, 2016If you're the kind of person who appreciates tailored Vita titles, then you'll more than get your money's worth here. It's just a shame that the studio fails to cut the foray off before it gets stale.
-
May 11, 2016It pains me greatly to say it, but this one is a whiff for a studio with a previously-perfect record. For those who need something to play on the Vita, I would strongly encourage them to pick up either of the Mutant Blob titles, and Guacamelee is an absolute must-have. Those are genuinely great works, and despite my disappointment here, I still call myself a Drinkbox fan... I'll just forget that Severed exists while I look forward to what they do next.
