Just what we expect from Team Ninja. Almost perfect SoulsBorne game which is unique and fresh in combat and atmosphere. Learning curve of combat is hard but necessary. They did turn with that after Nioh like Fromsoft did with Sekiro after Dark Souls and it is awesome!

Incredibly poor game design. The entire game is gatekept by a single, reflex related ability - deflect. If you cannot get the deflect down you can not progress out of the tutorial. But to have two phases that rely on reflexes ONLY is a really, really poor game design choice. The only reason why it is not receiving a 1 from me is that it was made available on Game Pass so at least all I was out was time and space on my SSD.

I was able to get to the second phase multiple times but the pace of the deflects changes drastically. Also the deflect window is inconsistent and the hit boxes for the first boss are obscene, making any dodging impossible. The same is true of the second phase. If it were a single phase I could understand it. I think I will stick to From Soft games. At least there I can find multiple ways to progress.

The parry system feels extremely good and tight, it can however make the game rather easy as soon as you master it. After some training, only one boss took me more than 3 tries. The combat shines most on 1 vs 1, struggles when there are multiple enemies, due to lock on and camera issues.

The level design is better than in previous games, it helps a lot that there is a jump button now and levels do get way more verticality. Overall those levels feel much better here, but they are still average at best.

Systems like the smithy, skill trees, Ninjutsu and magic feel slightly weaker than Nioh – more streamlined and less crazy to master them. It is better for casual players, as a huge Nioh fan it was a bit disappointing from time to time. Furthermore I dont feel that there is a need for that hub area.

A solid game with great gameplay, but it stands in the shadow of Nioh, which is superior in many ways.

In general it is a really good game with the main mechanics very well polished, but with too much customization and options (in terms of character leveling, spells system and all that stuff) for my taste.
One of the main reasons I loved Sekiro (9.5/10 for me) was that you have 1 simple, yet balanced mechanic (parry) and 3 things you level up (HP, damage output and your left prothesis).

Some of boss fights are epics (hard by the Way) like Lu Bu and Dong Zhuo.

This game is easier than Sekiro.
The armor variety in the first few chapters is also not very promising, with only a few different armor pieces that look pretty similar. In general, a very fun game with moderate replayability potential. The good thing is that you always have one or two side missions to level-up up before charging to the main battlefield.

In terms of difficulty, it can be likened to a fast-paced version of Elden Ring, making it kind of a challenge. The battle system is unique, with DEFLECT requiring you to counter your enemy's attacks within a split second. Cheesing your way through boss fights is not an option most of the time. This game has a steep learning curve, so GIT GUD.

Character creation is a standout feature, offering extensive customization options (Unlike Elden Ring, you look ugly no matter what you do.)

The story is best appreciated by those with knowledge of the Three Kingdoms universe. The identity of the blindfolded boy remains a mystery until the end, leaving room for educated guesses (I guess we are looking for a sequel?). The dialogues are filled with fine details that closely resemble the history of Ancient China. It's understandable why some reviewers didn't rate the story higher, given the challenge of fitting a 400-hour story into a 40-hour game.

For trophy hunters, there are no missable trophies, but three roadblocks to getting the platinum.
    1) The first boss (Who the hell designs a first boss with two phases?)
    2) The boss riding a horse (appears halfway through the game, and you can't miss it. Unfortunately, grinding before this boss fight is out of the question, as I did not find an efficient grinding spot before the fight.)
    3) The final boss (If you care, you can grind to max level and make the final boss a cakewalk.)

    Some complaints:
There is room for improvement in the equipment system. While there are many options to choose from, only a few of them matter. Additionally, 1-star to 3-star equipment becomes useless after the first few chapters of the game.
I wish there were more tutorials available. Many of the game's mechanics are left unexplained, leaving players to figure them out on their own.

Very well done in my opinion the change of response times due to type of weapons and overall weight of the equipment and the fatigue system

    Speaking of flaws:
    - definitely the camera handling is annoying at some times,
    - perhaps it was possible to create a greater balance in the difficulty curve, better managing the alternation of challenging and easy bosses
    - some doubts also on the growth of character characteristics, which at the beginning seems to be a bit confusing

Nice Level design, quite Nioh-ish but more vertical (another Sekiro influence).
Not-so-good graphics, levels and characters looks quite updated for a PS5 game (models from a DW game maybe?), but some bosses are very good in the other hand.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is sadly a step back compared to the Nioh series. It's not a bad game by any means, it's just average. Gameplay, which is it's best aspect has changed dramatically from Nioh and now feels more like Sekiro(only easier). Faster, visceral and more personal, also the addition of "jump" mechanic gives more options in combat as well as exploration. An issue that makes it's return from the first Nioh is the very small enemy roster (bosses are more) and halfway through the game you've seen all there is to see, that affects difficulty because you have nothing to surprise you anymore. Areas are also boring, everything you see is something you've seen before, no surprises here, lazy work from the developers would be the proper word. Visuals are fine but certainly not next-gen,if you played Nioh you know what to expect.
Music and sound effects are adequate.Voice acting in English language is below mediocre, better play it with Chinese or Japanese voice.Story, which was never Team Ninja titles strongest point (I don't mind) is a convoluted mess, characters come and go with very little time on the spotlight and by the end of the game i could hardly remember 1/3 of them. Maybe someone who has knowledge of Chinese history can understand it better and feel more familiar. Multiplayer is also an option and this time you can even invade other players(which is good), also if you don't like to get invaded there's a setting to turn it off so you can enjoy play with friends without any harassment. Speaking of multiplayer, i played since the day Wo Long got released for about fifteen days, it was very laggy, more than FromSoftware titles, maybe developers fixed the servers later or plan to. Also, Wo Long just like Nioh has NG+ cycle and so on, haven't played though.
I may sound harsh but the truth is i expect more from Team Ninja, i enjoyed Ninja Gaiden back in the day and loved their more recent works,Nioh 2 especially. Wo Long isn't as good.

Enemy attack rng is literally unfair and unreadable, 2 red attacks in a row with no chance of parrying both. Serious balance issues. An entire aspect of the combat system, special effects, which are a super dumbed down version of special attacks from Nioh 2, becomes literally irrelevant and unusable partway through the game due to how open it leaves you to attacks. Boss fights last about 3 times longer than they should even at full fortitude. Serious downgrade to how weapons work overall vs Nioh 2. Dumbing down of the combat customization in comparison to Nioh 2. Boring generic characters. Boring nonexistent story. Controls and gameplay overall feel far to frantic and cluttered, the developers just said "make it like sekiro". While the game is more stable than sekiro by a wide margin, the rhythm and feel of the gameplay is somehow less polished and like an imitation. Level design is lacking on a level I did not think possible. Everything looks the same and I run in circles constantly. Just...I don't even know. Too many things to count. I had hope that they had learned from Nioh 2, but they DEVOLVED TO FURTHER DEGENERACY.

After getting further into the game, the quality, especially in level design drops *dramatically*. Copy and pasted, linear, boring levels, that you MUST explore EVERY INCH of to PROGRESS. One of the WORST, LEAST ENJOYABlE souls likes ever, by far the most linear.

This game is simply superb. The combat is outstanding and the expiration is fantastic. Each level has so many interconnected path ways and secrets to find I can’t believe how well team Ninja pulled this off. My only con for the game is the story. I have trouble keeping track of the all the characters. Otherwise this is an easy recommend for anyone who likes souls style games and/or Sekiro.

It's a worse Nioh 2 in every way. In fact, they 100% stole Nioh 2's entire story line and even reused the enemy designs. It should have been a 20 dollar DLC that kept Nioh 2's awesome combat but instead we get this horrific magic system tied to a morale score that will take you the entire level to get high enough to use you good spells making magic worthless.

The combat is boring, you'll find a good portion of your attacks just going through the enemies and if you run out of stamina which is super easy to do, you get stunned by a stiff breeze.

I'd stay away from this one, even in co-op it's a boring slog of a game.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a game which takes some time to warm up to, but when you do it unravels an experiance full of intense gameplay and challenging combat. It takes a different approach to telling a Three Kingdoms story and feels very much like it ties nicely into the world of Dynasty Warriors, which lands really well.

To compare this game to anything else, I would suggest considering this as a nice blend of Sekiro, for it's setting and split second parry style combat and Ninja Garden for it's loose, dodge-heavy gameplay. If you aren't a fun of crushing and hard games, this isn't the game for you, as you will die over and over. The first boss you come across is one of the hardest and cruelest starter enemies I've ever had to face and it forces you to 'get gud' right away to be able to beat him. I can see why some people really don't like this game, as it seems to have a "love it or hate it" reception. But if you like all things "Soulsbourne" and "Sekiro", you will feel right at home with Wo Long. Though, I suggest trying the Demo before purchasing as this gives a really nice idea of what to expect for this title.

    .
    Let's start with the good:
    - Graphics look great. Sure there's better stuff out there, but this is a good-looking game.
    - Upload/Download to and fro PS4/5 versions. Wish more games had this feature.
    - Fairly deep item/equipment build customization. Similar to the Niohs but slightly simplified.
    - Great trophy list (if that's your jive). Makes you experience the full game with minimal pointless grinding for it's own sake.

And with that out of the way, here's what sucks:
The parrying! Don't get me wrong, I've been gaming for over 35 years and Sekiro is in my alltime top 5. This game just didn't do it right. Like, at all. Weapon swings (from every weapon) are too slow to really synergize with fast-paced attacking and parrying, so for most boss battles and a few trash mob fights, you're just going to have to wait out and parry parry parry parry until you break their poise.
Additionally, lots of enemy attack animations don't accurately reflect the timing of the parry, so you're forced to memorize which ones you do early or after the attack actually hits. When you make a game with tight parrying, this is uber important, but Team Ninja didn't seem to bother with that level of polish.
Also (more noticeable on the PS4 version) sometimes the parry input doesn't even register. This is kinda crucial, because then if you want to ensure you don't eat an axe to the face, you're tempted to press the button twice. HOWEVER, some genius decided to map dodging to the same button, as a double tap, so then you end up dodging instead, which gives no offensive benefit, and simply allows the enemy's spirit gauge to recharge.

I really, really wanted to like this game, but it felt like a total chore after the first few hours. Team Ninja was one of only 3 dev shops which I'd buy their stuff no question, site unseen. However, since the first DLC from Stranger of Paradise (base game was freaking awesome, don't get me wrong), it seems like their simply pandering to the elitist faction of the Git Gud club. Great games don't come from a nuclear arms race to see who to make the most challenging one. They come from solid mechanics and decent software performance, both of which were completely left in the dust on this title. Too many critics are giving this an inflated score because they're afraid of their base thinking they're just not Gud enough to enjoy it. Call a spade a spade, this game's not that good.

We'll see, maybe they can polish this up and tweak a few things. I hope they do. It has the potential to be quite good and fun, but right now it's mostly the opposite of those things.

There’s build diversity and the deflect system adds a lot of the addictive nature of the fun. I played the beta demo back in last Sept, it was a more challenging game but still fun. The released version is a bit easier than the beta demo for 2 reasons:

    1. They increased the parry timing’s window to make deflects easier to pull off. They were very hard in the beta demo.
    2. The ā€œstaminaā€ gauge still lets you perform actions when it’s in the negative. There’s a big risk in doing so but it doesn’t stop you like I’m the beta demo.

The performance on PS5 is good. No problems or noticeable dropped frames during times of intense combat. I have 10 hours into the game and encountered mild stuttering a few times at random spots like running around a corner with heavy terrain but no enemies. There isn’t a pop-in problem like on Xbox. At this time, PS5 is the best optimized port of Wo Long.

Gamer creds: I’m a Soulsborne fan that’s played everything from Demons Souls to Elden Ring but haven’t played Sekiro (yet). I tried Nioh 2 but bounced off it. Nioh 2 felt too aggravatingly unfair. Wo Long feels different, is more approachable and provides a generally fair (but not perfect) challenge.

Watch out for that stage 1 boss though. He’s a gatekeeper to make sure you nail down how to deflect a critical attack then counter attack.

Compared to Nioh, the game is rather easier, more friendly and forgiving and offers a more simple, watered down edition, both loot and builds wise. Not so like Diablo, just easier to access. I have no complains gameplay wise. Sound is good. All is good and fair. I have heard people who have spent 3 thousand hours on nioh complain about bs fights and the game being unfair but this is nonsense if you ask me. You just have to learn in order to win. If you don’t want to learn then don’t play it. I feel much more at home with what the game wants me to learn and do compared to e.g. hollow knight or something. To me this is to Nioh what elden ring is to Dark souls, although way more simple and to a much smaller scale. Dark souls and elden ring are giant games, Nioh and Wo Long are only big big games, see what I mean. And Nioh 2 is my most played game on ps4. That’s because of the Diablo factor and because the first Nioh run is the tutorial. Here you can practically build from the start and the first mission is the tutorial. Expand

It’s the 21st century can’t believe developers are still releasing games which rely on perfect timing.

Reason the fromsoft games were fun was even though you died a lot you were encouraged to learn from your mistakes and use these to improve.

If you can’t get the timing spot on you will struggle multiple times.

When you’re overloaded it affects timing but unlike the souls game which affects the characters speed this piece of rubbish gives you no indication you’re overloaded.

There’s no way to increase your weight limit so you have to contend with being overloaded permanently.

There’s no way to see if the equipment you’re picking up is useful or not till you’ve picked it up.

Very inconsistent one character first time I killed him I got 4000 qi.

Started a new game and killed him again got 1000 qi wtf is that about.

If you try the training mode to improve your skills but have too much equipment you can’t discard any equipment but can’t complete the training mode because you have too much equipment. If you then try to exit the training mode there’s no option.

If you do master the parry it’s pointless as it’s different for each weapon you use.

Come on team ninja it’s not April Fools for a month is this an early Joke and did you honestly play test this pile of crap you released a patch fixing bugs 3 day after this was released.

Not sure of what you were trying to achieve with this I’d but a fromsoft title without reading any reviews but wouldn’t buy anything you release ever again even if your titles had perfect reviews.

Will be trading in this rubbish as soon as I have the chance.

No Ki-pulse. No switching things up. Omnyo (Magic system) is in no way near as good as in the Nioh Games. What we have instead are generic light attacks that can't be switched Up and 1 strong attack that's pretty much unviable to usw.
The Game really pushes you to adapt to the parry system. Wich was kind of fun during the first 10 hours, but when there is NO other way to beat any midgame and above Bosses, or duels vs the Story NPCs than to sit back, learn every parry window and spam that stuff, it get's old pretty fast. Your melee-attacks won't do decent dmg, your Special moves will neither, even worse, in most scenarios you'll get punished by Bosses spamming their Specials whilst you perform yours. Or you'll get punished by their Specials while you try poking away with your non-cancelable light attacks.

They tried mixing up the Nioh formula with sekiro, wich could have been a good Idea, If they wouldn't have kicked out everything that made Nioh 1 + 2 Special and different from the other soulsborne titles.

My greatest disapointment really is in the forgettable, unbalanced, one-way-approach and boring combat. Even the always repeating enemies where WAY more fun in the Nioh Games. I platinumed every Fromsoftgame and their DLCs, same for both Nioh games and def played them Up and down, back and forth for thousands of hours. Yet I don't think I'll touch Wo Long again after beating the final boss...I really wish I would've waited for the Reviews and could refund the game, wich really saddens me to admit.

Hope Team Ninja will do better on the next Game. Wich, I hate to admit, won't be a pre-order.

You can parry and jump, and no more die when falling, you have martial arts. However, the Nioh 2 has Oni mode, Junjutsu, tons of skills and combo, and weapon mechanics. As a fan of soulslike, this hits the mark. The controls make for good combat, the camera, while customizable, can be slow, and the story will take you for a ride. WO Long truly takes what Onimusha does and makes it a great soulslike experience. This is truly a great successor to the Onimusha series and proves those types are not forgotten.

This game feels like a step backwards. The exploration is a lot less rewarding, the combat is much more minimalistic, and the challenge is turned up to 11. Perhaps for some diehard action junkies this will hit the spot, but I have no desire to force myself to use the unforgiving parry system, so this is a pass from me.

Terrible difficulty 1st boss. Makes the game not fun at all and you basically get stuck unless you learn parry combos. How anyone finds this fun or how it made it through any play testing is insane. I'm swearing off team ninja products if this is the way its going to be.

TLDR: A fun Sekiro-inspired reconfiguration of Nioh. It isn't perfect but the condensed way it incorporates other games better ideas is pushing the studio forward. I'm interested to see where they will go from here.

    Good:
It is Nioh condensed and given the Sekiro treatment,
Graphics are pretty even if the maps are poor,
When the combat clicks it's fun but imperfect next to games like Sekiro (If I'm mentioning it a lot it's because the game is blatantly based on it),
Cool weapons normally not seen in games like this,
Original setting (to Westerners at least)

    Bad:
The same poor level design as Nioh,
Enemies and bosses that can one shot you (it's just troll game design),
Lots of visual noise and a cluttered hud make it hard to focus on the various meters,
The deflect button is also the dodge button,
It basically is Nioh 2 : Remixed,
    Unintuitive RPG system,
    Its short,
Occasional graphical problems, enemies disappearing from a few steps away,

An average mix of Nioh & Sekiro that comes nowhere near the quality of its peers. Main takeaways:

    - combat can be fun but just like Sekiro - there's only one right way to play, not much room for different styles & builds. - boss fights are cool and interesting visually - presentation looks early PS4 era, worse than Nioh 1 - story is pure trash - it's confusing / nonsensical, badly

    - there's a lot of loot and RPG mechanics, but most of it feels meaningless, with little impact on gameplay (no matter your build & gear it's a parry-counter game)
-game's cleary made on a smaller budget: production values, enemy variety, weapon/armor/gear & environmental design all suffer
    - halfway through the only reason to keep playing are the bosses - exploration becomes boring and combat extremely repetitive because you're fighting the same rehashed enemies over & over again

It's still fun and exciting at times to fight in Wo Long but after Nioh 1 & 2 I expected much more from Team Ninja... and honestly can't they hire a good writer to tell a decent story?

Hope one day Team Ninja will also take inspiration of Fromsoftware in terms of level design and art direction. because environments and ennemies are quite boring. Not very entertaining when you decide to make a die/retry kind of game. Dont trust the high score. I dont get mainstream media these days...

Amazing combat with just the right innovations and a lot of interesting mechanics that really switch up the formula to create its own unique identity in the genre. A true must buy if you are a souls fan.

Gave me a choice of pronouns on the character creation screen. Nice of them to be inclusive of everyone, including smooth-brained bigots who get mad at nothing.

Combat is clunky and story is poorly written and boring. The biggest problem is the way you parry, it's the same as dodge which is a poor choice. They should have just done what sekiro did where L1 is parry and circle is dodge. I wouldn't get this game at full price, just wait until it's on sale for like ten dollars.

Where in Team Ninja Souls clones you will definitely hit a point where you will have to quit life or quit the game due to gigantic difficulty spikes.

What makes this even worse in Wo Long, is the absurdly bad Spirit gauge mechanic that literally punishes you for doing anything other than normal attacking. It's not fun, it's annoying.

We've went from challenging games that revolve around game knowledge and figuring out what you have to do, to games that revolve around dev egos and for that, I blame FromSoft. Using your design inconsistences against the player is not challenging.. it's bad, lazy and unintelligent game design and you should feel bad for it. 3/10 and I hope this game bombs so bad that Team Ninja would think twice next time they make such a cheap game.

I love the souls games from "From Software", there is a good balance of difficulty. The level design is great on those games.

For this game, it is complete trash. Graphically, it is worst than Sekiro, a ps4 game that released 4 years ago. The difficulty is ridiculous and you can only play one way. Time Parry or get destroyed. The first boss after playing 30 min destroyes you. I am out.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a lovechild between Sekiro and Nioh games with some Chinese mythos and history sprinkled on the top. It is a truly great combat experience that is drawn back by somewhat convoluted storytelling, lackluster decisions to simplify magic and attributes and severe optimization problems. With that said, it is a really fun experience that any fan of the genre will surely love.
