But all of that quickly faded away to give place to an extremely dull world, full of copy-paste missions (if you can even call them missions). The plot is uninteresting and very boring. Most of the gadgets are actually useless so you cannot try to vary your own approach to the game either. I also didn’t like car handling, it feels very unrealistic. I don’t mind arcade style, but the cars in this game are boring to drive.

I strongly believe that what could have saved this game is an extensive coop mode. A coop mode as in do missions together and use synergies of multiple approches on an objective instead of one always similar and linear way. Unfortunately, that is not the case at all since the coop possibilities of WDL are very limitative.

Ubisoft continues to deceive on its deliveries. I am pessimistic for the future, and so are their shareholders judging on UBI’s stock price.

It's a beautiful game, but the mechanics felt like a big step back from Watch Dogs 2. WD2 is the best in the series. This one tries to go to dark and spooky at times, but doesn't quite sell it. I personally think WD should keep the somewhat lightheartedness of WD2.

No spoilers. I haven't played any Watchdogs game before.

Pros: Setting of London felt very accurate and nice to see somewhere I can recognise places I've been. The dialogue is generally very well done and feels very genuine, and this is true across an accurately diverse London society The recruitment and play as anyone mechanic is definitely engaging and it's fun to develop connections

The gameplay, although repetitive, is fun at heart
    Looks great

    Cons:
Gameplay isn't diverse, feels like every mission is formulaic. Infiltrate, hack, shoot. It's also not very challenging, it's easy to lose police/enemies. Particularly after a mission you will have to escape an area but sometimes this is literally walking out the front door. This makes the side missions particularly unattractive, as for the most part they don't offer anything new.

The dialogue can be a bit weird sometimes. I think this is a by-product of having to have so many variations for what your characters say in response to a standard line.

There are a lot of bugs. None game breaking that I encountered, but common enough to be immersion ruining and a bit disappointing. Things like invisible vehicles, your character exiting a moving vehicle with ease. It seems mostly around the vehicles to be honest.

The story is okay at best. I enjoyed following the threads but none of the different branches felt particularly long or standout. The "central" storyline also felt weak and I think this was a consequence of a standard cast of characters.

I didn't hate this game, and enjoyed it for the most part, but I didn't think it was particularly good. I wouldn't recommend it for full price at the moment

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watch Dogs Legion is sadly a mediocre game that removes a lot of mechanics that were in Watch Dogs 2. New gameplay is not introduced, instead of a RC toy car you get a remote controlled spider, which is very strong and can be used to beat almost all content in the game. The people you play as are random so there is a chance your spy character might be very unappealing to you and there is no way you can change that. The main story feels way too long in my opinion, you do the same style of missions over and over again until you destroy all the evil organizations in London. The highlight of this game are ironically the side activities, I had more fun playing the kick up side game where you juggle the football as long as you can and also the darts side activity. You cannot pickup weapons from enemies for some reason as well. In watch dogs 2 you could purchase many different weapons and customize your loadout. In WD Legion you have 4 weapons to choose from and that is it. Hacking feels much weaker, there is no signature blackout hack or the mass shutdown hack. Ubisoft should probably put this franchise on hold if they cannot come up with a more fun gameplay loop. Expand

Third in the watch series and although for me it doesn't hit the highs of the second game, it's a lot more playable and fun than the 1st. The idea of being able to recruit and control just about any NPC in London is probably one of the games biggest selling points, unfortunately, it's also one of the reasons it isn't as much fun as Watch Dogs 2. You can keep recruiting operatives up to a limit of 45, but they all feel like a hollow shell. Because you can chop and change between them, its unlikely you will really care what happens to them. This takes away some of the interest as they are little more than drones doing your bidding with zero character development.

Graphics are good and crisp, if not particularly ground breaking for next gen. Cars handle badly, but they always did in this series, but there is a startling lack of variety in vehicles. As far as I can tell all the same models are all the same colour. For an open world game, there really isn't a lot you can do except play the story, so don't expect the depth you would find in a GTA game. Sound is ok, only playing in stereo so I can't comment on any 3D performance.

This game is not groundbreaking, but it also isn't a bad game. It's better than average, is fun to play and for an early next gen game, isn't as buggy as I imagined it would be. People giving it 0 and saying it's the worst game ever are just overreacting. Not sure what they expected from Ubisoft, its as if they've not bought one of their games before. Personally, I really like their games and will hopefully have this game finished soon.

Also the gameplay mechanics are too basic for a hacker based game. There are not many ways to approach a mission. The result is that you always end with a shootout. The story itself was ok at best. The plot twists made it interesting but other than that, it was not memorable. Also, recruiting your team is not fun at all because of the ‘if you something for me, I will join tour team’ quests.

Watch Dogs Legion had SO much potential, but has unfortunately just fallen short of the mark. I still had a lot of fun playing the game, but I feel like with just a bit more time and resource this could have honestly been a contender for game of the year.

Starting with what it did right: the gameplay is a lot of fun. There are so many ways to tackle different missions, from walking in there all guns blazing to stealthing, or sending in your spider bot to scope the area and take out some enemies, to using drones to evaluate what lays ahead, setting drones to betray the enemies to start the attack, hacking cameras, setting traps etc etc. Even though a lot of the missions are actually very similar, this variety in approaches means that you can have a lot of fun doing things in different ways. I also really enjoyed the storyline and the main characters. Bagley especially is absolutely hilarious at times.

Areas for improvement would be the environment itself. I'm British and I was so excited to play a game based in London, but for whatever reason it just doesn't end up that exciting to play it. It all seems a bit grey and dreary and didn't provide the same level of excitement as San Francisco did in Watch Dogs 2. Maybe they should've added some countryside, or just brightened things up a bit - I don't really know - but for whatever reason it left me disappointed.

The police system is good but basically never used. I can only remember 1 mission (plus courier missions) where the police came after me; even then it was only with 2 out of 5 stars. I don't know why they didn't use this more to test your skills at escaping. There were some fun missions with obstacle courses for drones and spider bots. I would've loved to have seen more of these and perhaps even time trials or races. Drone races and car races could've added a bit of exciting new content to keep things varied. The car races could've even had certain hacking power-ups to make it more than just a straight racing game. Missed opportunity there in my mind.

The 'play as anyone' system definitely led to some fun characters and missions, but a lot of the recruitment missions felt very samey and once you have a few characters with powers/weapons you like, there's not much point anymore. Maybe they could have tailored certain missions to be suited to certain specialists. E.g. tell you in advance that you'll want a hacker or a drone expert for the next mission so you are encouraged to switch around. Otherwise I tended to play it safe and use my hitman since she had the best weapons and I didn't know what I was likely to encounter. It would have also been good if you could upgrade your characters in some way - either by buying 'training' upgrades or swapping powers and weapons between characters or something. There were some cool characters I recruited but basically never played with since they were underpowered compared to others. The money system is really poor. You can only spend money on clothes, appearance (hair, tattoos, make-up etc.), car colours and weapons skins. You're also really limited in the money you can earn. I maybe got a total of 200,000 during my playthrough and some of the stuff costs around 15,000 so it doesn't leave much to play with. There is no good way to earn a decent amount of money as far as I know. Would've been nice to use money for more than just cosmetics and be able to actually buy weapons, cars and more powerful abilities for individual characters.

Ultimately it is a game that I have a lot of love for and would definitely recommend. I hope they don't give up on the series and the play as anyone idea as they have tons of potential if tweaked a little!

I've been a fan of the Watch Dogs series since the beginning. Legion was a dramatic departure from previous games however, because there is no set character. Anyone off the street can join Dedsec and the characters are different for everyone.

One thing that's the same for everyone, user character dialog is short and minimal for everyone, and there is absolutely no character development. That is the downfall of this game. You don't become attached to your characters because the story isn't built around them. There is a "permadeath" option for characters and if your character dies they are gone for good. But you won't feel bad.

There's still a story, and still non-interactive characters to push it along, but I honestly did not like playing a character that is truly a nobody and doesn't really talk except for useless British one-liners to agree, disagree or comply.

Graphically on the PS5 it looks good and FPS is high enough. There is some raytracing in the puddles and window reflections. The vehicle and people physics are at times laughably poor however. GTA V, a 6 year older game did it much better. I expect way more from a AAA title like this. As of this writing there are a few graphical glitches in the interface also.

Overall the game was fun enough for me to finish, but much less fun than Watchdogs 2 because of the lack of character development, and far less polished too. And now to get into the other issues:

Half my trophies are on the PS4 and half are on the PS5. They are split up. The autosave system fails often, losing hours of play time. You better use the in menu cloud save AND back up saves to USB if you upgrade to PS5 midgame, because once you do it starts you at the beginning as if you never played.

Install size on the PS5 when installed from a PS4 disc is 70GB, because both the FULL versions of each game are required on the hard drive. You can download the "PS5 upgrade" for free but it's actually the entire game installed separately. Select version PS5 to play. Pull out the disc, put it back in and it defaults to PS4. Start the game and it starts at the beginning and your save is gone! I sh1t you not! If I didn't use the Cloud save and/or a USB save backup I would have rage quit this game. Be very careful if upgrading a PS4 disc to play on a PS5. Ubisoft botched the save system and the PS5 upgrade system BAD.

I expect some improvements and fixes with updates over time, but as of this writing December 2020 that's where it stands.

While its dystopian, futuristic London may smell of Grand Theft Auto open worlds, Watch Dogs Legion's approach to recruiting any NPC differentiates the formula in a unique way, creating a fascinating blend of freedom, action, stealth, and roguelikes.
  2. 60
What you end up with is an experience that shows a ton of promise, but ends up being entirely average. It’s hard to call Watch Dogs Legion a bad game outright. It’s a serviceable, if traditional, open-world game with a boring story and novelty mechanics that play out better on paper than in execution. The PS5 version makes expected improvements to visuals and load times, but isn’t a standout example of a “next-gen” title.
  3. 65
Watch Dogs: Legion is a far more palatable experience on PS5 thanks to its vastly-improved load times and splendid visual upgrades. The only real technical gripes are that there’s little in the way of DualSense implementation, and the framerate, while steady, hasn’t been upped. Its base problems of open-world fatigue and messy storytelling are still problems that can’t be so easily fixed and still remain a significant barrier to enjoyment. It’ll give you a dazzling trip to London, but you wouldn’t want to stay there.
