I can't stand most other RPG or action RPG aesthetics. The Valkyrie is smoking cute and the intermission area is so beautiful. The action is fun and is constantly fresh. The downsides are enemy variety and some might complain that the environments are bland. However, I really enjoyed the environments. They did a such a great job with what I imagine the developers limitations were. It is a very creative and smart game. Something was drawing me to this game, and the negative reviews kept me away. But one review from Happy Gamer on YouTube that was positive, changed my mind. I'm so glad I gave this game a try. For me, it's the best. I'm obsessed with it. If you're into this, cheers! I hope more games like this come out. The Valkyrie is such a cool character! Expand

I haven't finished it and not planning to continue the game so I don't die from boredom, the game screams "we need to make quick bucks so let's charge the players 60$ for a sh!!ty game with boring, over-used plot about ragnarok and odin so we can call it a day" very disappointed, I read a review that said the game feels like plastic and I couldn’t agree more.

Had some fun moments but ultimately a drab, uninspired, and frustrating experience. Some really odd design choices, the most egregious to me being fighting wave after wave after wave of enemies just to get an elixir that you can’t carry any more of because you have the maximum of 3.

The design is pretty, a bit empty at times, and I wish there was more ability to backtrack and explore. They could have made a little more of puzzles in the environment, but as I said before, not bad for a comfy chill out game.

It’s a basic hack and slash in terms of gameplay, but it’s satisfying getting up into hundreds of hits in combos, and the spells look beautiful.

If you’re looking to test your gamer muscles, this might be too little for you. If you want to cozy up and kill some monsters of a night, this is a fun way to do it.

✔️Visuals & character designs look good.
    ✔️End level scoring.
    ✔️Linear designed levels.
✔️Abundant selection of melee weapons & spells.
✔️Combat takes a stylized approach by offering flashy combos that are able to be preformed.
    ✔️Decent voice acting.
✔️Offers additional difficulty modes. I see this as an inherently good thing when games offer it.

    Cons:

❌Cannot load a manual save made at a crystal on a "game over" screen, nor is the option available to trigger an additional auto-save made near the crystal. Your manual save is only accessible to load through the title screen. How a basic feature like loading a manual save at a game over screen didn't make it's way into the game is beyond baffling.

❌The Valkyrie's knocked down recovery animation is far too slow.

❌With certain weapons, when initiating a charged attack, reminiscent of the UTs found in Ninja Gaiden, the Valkyrie doesn't stay put to do the attack but instead continues to plunge forward, often missing the target entirely. The windup frames in which these attacks can be preformed should also be trimmed down.

❌A god awful camera. Probably one of the worst cameras the genre has produced. Switching between the hard and soft lock-on can help minimize the issues. But it's time for action games to adopt a camera similar to Ubisoft's For Honor, where the camera goes through the wall and boundaries that confine the player go translucent.

❌No button mapping. Much like the need for action games to adopt a camera similar to For Honor's, it's time button mapping becomes standard. Shinobi did this in 2002. What's the excuse?

❌Frame dips into the teens when there's a lot of magic prevalent on screen.

❌Both physical and magical attacks don't register. This isn't a case of an enemy guarding. Your attacks will just go through them.

❌To make up for the lack of mid-attack dash & guard canceling, the speed in which your attack animations take place should be faster. You're only able to dash cancel the recovery frames of attacks. This was the fair trade off in Ninja Gaiden, which was further punctuated with fairly good enemy hitstun. You had to commit to your attacks, but the speed in which your attacks took place were fast and allowed for your reflexes to be more properly utilized. There's none of this in Valkyrie Elysium, which necessitates the use of the same fast weapon over and over, becoming a monotonous over time.

I cannot recommend this game at a price higher than $15 USD. It has good ideas but they are poorly executed and the game lacks basic features.

The story leaves a lot to be desired. I am about half way thru the game and yet I haven't really felt a since of urgency. I think I have an idea as to where the story is going. Yes, the game is short (12-13 hours), but that doesn't mean you can't flesh out the world a bit more. Hell, the Einherjer have more substance than the main character. I know she is supposed to be like that, but a little more about her creation and/or training would help.

The camera can f**k off and die in this game. Too many times did I get caught in a corner and just resulted to smashing the square and circle buttons to get free.

I would probably be a bit more fond of this game were it more like 29.99 or even 34.99, but a 59.99 game this is not worth. Luckily for me I borrowed it from a family member and I recommend you do the same.

The combat is pretty solid. Using a combination of elemental breaks, spells and the soul chain to link combos always felt satisfying to pull-off. The inability to dodge cancel can make the flow of fighting feel a little clunky though as you'll be locked into an animation and will tank hits knowing full well you saw it coming but couldn't do anything about it. The inability to dodge cancel can make the flow of fighting feel a little clunky though as you'll be locked into an animation and will tank hits knowing full well you saw it coming but couldn't do anything about it. But when the combat clicked, it really clicked for me.

One disappointment was that you don't get a nibelung valesti attack until late in the game and it doesn't work in conjunction with the combo meter. It feels like an afterthought .

The music is quite good and compliments the games environments and visuals nicely. I'd say it has more of a soothing quality though and is something that you enjoy playing in the background. It never ever really took front stage for me with no real iconic pieces of composition.

The gameplay loop can be a bit repetitive as you keep playing on. Whether it be a main quest or a subquest, the basic structure is to follow the objective waymarker killing enemies along the way and then defeating a boss or horde of enemies. The exploration is very light and there are only a handful of moments where you truly go off the beaten path. Even then, things like quests and Hollow Blossoms are shown on your map so it's not really exciting when you pick one up. And chests are usually not worth the trouble to pick up since they're usually filled with a small amount of gems (that you pick up plenty of through combat) or replenishing items. The soul chain ability is heavily underused in these exploration segments.

The einherjar "puzzles" are, honestly, a joke. You never have to creatively utilize their abilities to solve any of these and anytime you approach one the appropriate character speaks out anyways telling you exactly who to use. It's a cool idea, but the way it was implemented is very underdone.

Graphically, the game does look dated. Character movements can be pretty robotic and lip movements are never synced with the voice audio. Only during certain cutscenes are they synced, and there aren't a lot of them in the game. The visual style of the game is sort of in between a more realistic look and something like that of cel-shaded graphics. Personally, I feel like the cel-shaded style cheapened the overall look of the game and would've preferred that they didn't include it. Environments are fairly well constructed with either a lot of foliage, buildings, or broken rubble. But, they aren't all that interesting to explore. And you'll have to revisit these areas several times to complete subquests.

Story-wise, it's nothing really special. I won't spoil anything here, but the main gripe I had was actually surrounding the einherjar. I really liked all 4 characters and liked the idea of focusing more on their stories rather than on a larger cast of characters like in the original Valkyrie Profile. However, we don't really get much during the normal progression of the story. You can unlock what the game calls memories which are basically audio files you can listen to if you want to learn more about an einherjar's past. While it does add some extra context and depth to a character, the fact that they're a missable unlockable and not implemented in the main game is more of a detriment. It doesn't feel nearly as impactful as the scenes that would play out for characters in the Valkyrie Profile. However, near the end of the game there are some genuinely great cutscenes with great cinematography that had my attention.

After completing the main story and all the side quests, the impression I got was that the game could've been much more. There are glimpses of brilliance but I really get the sense that the team was held back by limitations. This is apparent to me in the final chapter as, at least for me, the game managed to capture some magic and I could see more polish here that showed what the team is capable of. There's a solid setup consisting of great combat, memorable character designs, a potential for great character interactions, and interesting exploration mechanics. It's just that the game never fully taps into that potential.

Valyrie Elysium is an action JRPG that brings Nordic floklore into another adaptation that, is a good one if you are into action JRPGs: Lots of combat, plenty of perks, skills, weapons, cool enemies and boss battles, and a very good cast of antagonists.
Nevertheless, I felt kind of down to see how "anime" this game is, and instead of opting for a more traiditional Nordic art, the developer decided to include their Japanese version of the Sagas... I love the Valkyrie's design, the monsters, the stages, the envoronments, the music... but I hate the design of Odin, he looks like a Final Fantasy character and we already have plenty of those... conversely, the Valkyrie's design is amazing, and one of the antagonists looks like a female version of Kain from Final Fantasy IV... it is awesome!
Visuals in this game are 3D but it's kind of cell shaded sometimes, as you can see the characters silhouettes. skills and magic look amazing, and the more you develop them, the more gorgeus they look... just wait until you get Nibelung Valesti, you will want to unleash that attack in the plethora of foes you will encounter out there.
The supporting cast is forgettable, the Einherjar, maybe save the first one you get, is cool, but the rest do not add up, really, they are useful in battle but for the development of the story I really did not care about them.
Instead, Valkyrie is a cool character, I like her, and her design is awesome. She is a fierce warrioress, and she cna wield multuiple weapons once you get them, but I felt so comfortable with the initial sword that I never changed it. Her relationship with Odin is what makes most of the plot, but other antagonists from Norse mythos will appear and they will also contribute to the development of the story, but in the end I only care about Valkyrie's fate, I did not care about the rest of the cast.
The battle system is fast paced, and you can unleash several combos that linked with the elemental damage that your Einherjar can unleash, proves devastating for all enemies depending on their weaknesses. Boss battles are hard, and actually, this game is hard even in lower difficulties, but it never felt unreasonable or unfair.
The music is the main protagonist of this game... the soundtrack is magical, is pure, is holy, is pristine, is pretty, is charming, is one of the best musical scores I have ever heard in a video game. It transported me, it made the journey easier, it made me want to love this game, and it is basically what hooks me into playing it... the transition of the soundtrack from your exploration into battle is simply amazing.
My main complaint about the game is that, even though the game is not open world or like Valkyrie Profile, which I'm totally fine, I did not like the way the side quests were created: You have to go back to the places you already visited to fetch items, kills monsters, or do other things... it felt repetitive, but you want to do it, as this is the way in which you can make your characters more powerful, but after almost 24 hours of gampley, doing this over and over felt too repetitive.
Bottom line I enjouyed the journey, the main character is a bliss and watching her develop her skills is amazing, the antagonists are very nice, and even though the story is not that immersive, I enjoyeed blasting my way through foes so I could help Valkyrie... I just hope that we could have more entries of this franchise, and that Square Enix can give us a little bir more Nordic style... Hilda, Fenrir, and Valkyrie per se were incredible well designed, but with Odin the allfather, I got completely disappointed.
this is not a hack and slash, you need to understand how the combo system works, otherwise you will die a lot in here... go grab it, it is a different game, another addition to Nordic Sagas, and a very good one indeed even with some silly design choices, you will enjoy it!

Valkyrie Elysium’s world and characters based on Norse mythology are fascinating, and its speedy combat is exhilarating. It’s too bad that the title feels like it could have used a little more polish, and the button mapping doesn’t match the game’s systems. The game lacks a bit in volume as well, and its world and characters could have been fleshed out even more.

I was excited going into Valkyrie Elysium because of what I had heard about the series. While after my time with it that excitement certainly has dulled, not because of the combat but just because everything around it just kind of felt ‘meh’. If the world was more populated or at the very least more interesting there would be much more here to really sink one’s teeth into, as it stands once players are done doing Odin’s bidding they will find little reason to return in my opinion.
