    Soulless yet almost serviceable as a light hack ‘n slash Valkyrie Profile spinoff, Elysium is a 15-hour chore of ugly visuals, repetitive combat, and a mundane plot.

    Despite the cliche of the angry video game reviewer who “doesn’t even like video games,” it’s not that fun tearing down the work of people who haven’t done anything catastrophically wrong. Because there is nothing about Valkyrie Elysium that is outright bad or broken. It’s just the experience as a whole is so dreadfully dull.

    Valkyrie Elysium will appeal to fans of the franchise and those who want to try a fun experience with an emphasis on combat. The former will find a new vision of the series that maintains the essence and does not clash with the previous ones; The latter, on the other hand, will be fascinated by a title full of beautiful environments and action-packed battles. [Recommended]

    Valkyrie Elysium feels much more like a spin-off entry in the Valkyrie Profile franchise than a full-fledged new main title. Its smaller scope, budget, and design lend it a “PlayStation 2 game” feel. The game’s combat is its saving grace, alongside some fun character interactions. Without the Valkyrie name and branding, Elysium could’ve very well been written off as a somewhat generic action game.

    This game feels like I'm chewing through plastic. The only good thing about it is the battle system, but after probably 4 hours of playing, IThis game feels like I'm chewing through plastic. The only good thing about it is the battle system, but after probably 4 hours of playing, I can totally see this gets old pretty fast. As for the rest… the visuals are flashy, but very restrained, story is just one huge WTF so far (Odin being a bearded man in the intro, and now it's a gentleman in a white coat? What?…). The whole thing feels extremely "plasticky", no life, no enjoyment, just numbers and button mashing. Enemy AI is so braindead it's not even funny - you basically just fly between them and hit these couple of buttons (and do combos if you feel like you want to screw the camera even more - oh yeah, I forgot about the camera which is very very broken…).

    So yeah. Demo looked kinda nice, bought the full game, played 4-5 hours, and I can't really make myself spend more time on this. Money paid are money paid, but time is more precious thing, especially comparing to spending it on a game like this one. Oh well     … Full Review »

    Soleil have taken the bizarre decision to turn one of the most beloved cult classic RPGs of all time into a cheap, forgettable third person action game. We have enough of those.

    This game falls flat on everything that made the original games great. Characterization, art, story - you can tell even Sakuraba mailed it in for this one. It's all just completely uninteresting. Disappointing for newcomers, disappointing for long time fans. It's such a shame. It's SUCH a shame. And Square will probably look at mediocre sales figures as "proof" that no one wants a Valkyrie game any more. We do, we just want one that actually respects the other entries in the franchise.    … Full Review »
