Trek to Yomi is truly beautiful, simple in its execution of delivering a Kurosawa, monochrome style story that will allow you to play through 3-4 times thanks to a path choice midway through the game. The combat is simple and familiar to anyone whos played a game before. Light and heavy attacks can be mixed and matched, most of which you will find and learn as the game progresses, as well as the ability to alter simple light attack stokes using the right stick, to strike upwards, for example, which does add a little depth to the combat depending and what enemy you are facing. However, this will largely go unnoticed by those who will choose to just press square to win, which seems to be a valid tactic in this game, until you face a boss at least.

Visually is where this game shines. The camera is not a concern here with it either being in a fixed position or panning along with you as you move through feudal Japan. Little collectibles are scattered through the levels, often in little hidden pathways that are not always obvious but not so difficult to spot either if you are actively looking, which if you're anything like me means you will be hugging every wall of the scene to see if there is a passage hidden or obscured for the chance of treasure or a sweet stat upgrade. Whether trekking through a village situated on two sides of a river below a gorgeous waterfall or preparing for a showdown with a bandit chief, framed by a burning torii gate, it's always a feast for the eyes gazing on scenes so symmetrical it would give Wes Anderson a hard on. You might struggle to take it all in a single shot. Even more incentive to play through the game once more for that alternate choice path.

For the price, I don't think you can go wrong picking this up. It's great that there are still people that want to make video games that can be considered art. I would argue that this should be considered art.

Visuals are stunning and the gameplay is addictive. Not the most complex combat system but I don’t always want that. The Atmosphere is amazing and so much care went into the ambiance.

Personally I love Japan so a game based in Samurai times is something to look forward to,
THE GOOD: It is Akira Kurosawa 'style' game, with great music, sound effects and amazing camera angels, this 2d/3d or whatever they call it is absolutely amazing imo, it is not just a basic left to right it is so much more!!,
also the 2nd part of the game reminds me a bit of Nioh... in a good way

THE BAD one is mainly fighting - finishers are great, there are many moves You will unlock yet still certain enemies needs to be fight within a specific move set otherwise it is super hard to kill them and that makes it repetitive and boring.

If You like samurai and 2D games this one is for You!

Trek to Yomi was a enjoyable game with great black/white visuals, story is awesome, and the bosses are also great. To begin, love the game to even go for the platinum and pass is aproximately 6 times. In contrast, the only negative was the buttons but overall liked the game a lot.

All Japanese Samurai sword-fighting action adventure games set in Feudal Japan, especially those paying respects to the legendary Kurosawa Akira style of flicks with grain filters, and most importantly with Japanese voice over, are totally beyond AWESOME !!!!!!!

All sizzle, no steak. The gameplay is utter trash. Complete waste of time and money. Looks nice on the surface, but the animations are stiff and weird so even the aesthetics are ultimately second rate.

You want a good samurai game, play ghost of tsushima. Yumy suffers from horrible frame rate, repetitive combat. Agat, Tsushima is better in every way

The biggest Repetitive **** in my entire Lifetime I ever played. Tank Control from the 90's Playstation (Resident Evil Style), Story is from Absurdly to Boring, Fighting System are Horrible,
Who wants play a great Samurai Game, should play Ghost of Tsushima. You can play with Noir filter aka "Akira Kurosawa" it's a thousand times better than this. This Game is your Money not worthy.

This is one of the worst games I've played in recent times. Eurogamer has a whole article about how poor this game performs on next-gen consoles even though it's basically a gameboy game. The combat is something you'd come up with yourself if you were a first-time game developer. It's just light attack and heavy attack with a couple of obvious combos. Parrying is uninspired and the flow doesn't feel right. Frustratingly, there's numerous times when you can choose between two paths but when you pick one, you can't go back to the other, meaning you miss collectibles. The fixed camera angle from Resident Evil 1 is immersion-breaking. The combat is incredibly repetitive. If you like the theme, just play Ghosts of Tsushima like every other sane person - that's one of the best samurai games of all time. This is trash. I'd rather eat bob all day than ever play this again. Shame on you, developers. I appreciate the indie games scene but I didn't pay £450 to play Tetris. I hate everyone. Expand

Absolutely stunning game, probably the visually most beautiful I have ever played. Different to some reviews I find the combat great fun and a challenge. If you like old Japanese films a la Kurosawa this is almost a must play.

I barely heard about this game back when it first launched but I do remember hearing a Youtuber I trusted saying he recommends it even with how flawed it is and I can definitely say I agree with him because while I'm positive you'll find it enjoyable, it is no way underrated because the flaws drag it down from being a classic. Before I actually talk about what I don't like about this game, the first thing I can say is that the black and white aesthetic feels incredibly cinematic and immersive tricking you into thinking you're watching an old movie in a good way and since this game was made with the black and white aesthetic from the ground up, it's for sure better than Ghost of Tsushima's Kurosawa mode. The music, voice acting, and the environments are pretty good at making sure your immersion isn't broken and stays with you all the way to the end. There's 4 separate weapons here and they're all unique and the fact the game takes advantage of the PS5's adaptive triggers is a nice bonus. You can even earn new moves via exploration and this can encourage you to keep an eye out for hidden spots in the environment to see if there's something for you to grab or even take down enemies without getting your blade out. Now that I've gotten all the positives out of the way, this game was some major problems that prevent me from both recommending this game and playing it again. The first major problem I have is that the story while completely serviceable isn't compelling and doesn't make me feel anything when things go bad which in turn, makes not even bother getting into the lore which that genuinely feels like an afterthought with how the game never asks any questions about our characters past making it difficult for me to connect with the characters either. While the way the camera is shot can be cinematic, there are times when the environment gets in the way of the camera totally messing up your focus. The puzzles are WAY too easy even for an indie game and I wouldn't be surprised if even someone who hates puzzles solves them quickly. I'm not kidding when I say the game is kinda broken since once you gain access to a few special moves, you can legit just spam those moves on the enemies over and over and there's pretty much nothing the enemies can do about it ensuring the enemy variety is meaningless and you don't even need to pick up any new moves and considering new moves are found only in exploration and not naturally throughout the game, that's a genuine failing on the developers part; and NO, the bosses aren't gonna encourage you to find those moves either since as long you can master your parrying and dodging, you'll pretty much be just fine. But tbh, easily the worst part about this game is how the gameplay is both unsatisfying and not smooth; no joke, whenever I entered the final boss in Chapter 6, the game wouldn't respond to my inputs for more than a second causing him to get a cheap shot at me and considering some of the trophies involve defeating bosses without getting hit, that's downright aggravating, one tiny complaint I have is that I wish the range was better since some enemies are so close to my sword when I feel like it should've hit them, but also how the game's hit registration is inconsistent because sometimes both me and my enemy will swing our swords and even though it should've hit us, nothing happened leaving us wide open. Overall, while this game is not totally unsalvageable, it's also certainly a little disappointing and after 18 hours of this game, I'm genuinely left unsatisfied since I know this game could've been so much more but alas, this is what we got. If you think this game is interesting, go in with an open mind, otherwise I don't think you should bother. Expand

Trek to Yomi is a mixed bag.
The Unique visual style is the biggest selling point, but also something that isn't always working in the games favor.
Some parts of the game are just to dark, if your character is in the foreground its totally fine but in some scenarios your character tends to wander off into the distance and its hard to tell what actually is going on. Also the subtitles

Also the subtitles are in white, they sometimes overlap with the white environment.
Let's talk about the gameplay, the game has a parring system which doesn't really work.
There is also no reason to learn any of combos.
Fighting kinda fells repetitive and is sometimes frustrating.
But the Game is cheap, has a very distinctive Visual Style and the short Story (3 - 4 hours) makes it perfect to entertain you on a boring day.

The difficulty is just weird, I played it all on medium but then couldnt beat the final boss until I put it on easy. The combat depth and range of weapons are decent, but the blocking is horrible.

What could be improved: The enemy combat ai and facial expressions in cutscenes could be improved. The story is not very interesting, elaborate or memorable enough... An unexpected switch of setting/story focus mid way through the game did add some novelty. In addition, a lot of concepts/phrases were used too often: "you could have saved them" was said like 300 times.

My conclusion: Overall I had many fustrating moments in combat, but at least there were many respawn points and the music and visuals carried me forward - although i wish i could have included the story as a pull factor. Took about 5 hours for me to complete, if it had taken longer or if I had paid more than 10£ I might have give this a 5 instead of a 6. I can only recommend it if you really like feudal Japan, short experiences, or really want to try a flawed but unique game to take a break from AAA titles. I'm giving this game a 68/100

At eight hours in length on a single playthrough Trek to Yomi is a compelling enough story that makes strong use of cinematic techniques to tell a samurai tale in a novel way. Its approach could easily be imagined on the silver screen but its interactive medium makes for a compelling combat-heavy side scroller with enough mechanical depth to warrant multiple playthroughs.

It’s a shame that despite a story about finding balance, Yomi doesn’t manage to achieve that itself, being a handsome cinematic homage on an indie budget, but sadly lacking the smooth and satisfying swordplay to back it up. [Issue#15, p.78]
