Oct 2, 2025Despite its shortcomings, Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree manages to stand out among roguelike games thanks to its visuals, combat, and progression.
-
Oct 2, 2025Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is a captivating roguelite thanks to its narrative concept and artistic style, but it struggles in terms of pacing, variety and difficulty balance.

Sep 30, 2025The most heart-wrenching aspect of Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree comes when you successfully complete a run. You’ll have to sacrifice whichever character you designated as your Kagura, and seeing your eight dear friends slowly disappear one by one actually hits hard. The theme of sacrifice is strongly woven into the narrative of this game, and it’s probably the most powerful thing about it. If more of the game’s beats hits as hard as this one, it would be easier to recommend. Ultimately, this is just another decent roguelite action game, albeit one with a couple of interesting ideas and a lot of personality.

Sep 29, 2025Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is an ambitious roguelike that tries to innovate within a saturated genre, blending narrative and gameplay through the village of Shinju, where the generational cycle adds emotional weight to each run. Despite its strong art direction, memorable soundtrack, and some creative ideas—such as the dual-sword system and the presence of the Guardians—the game suffers from excessive dialogue, unintuitive menus, technical issues, and mechanics that don’t always work well.

Sep 19, 2025Towa and the guardians of the sacred tree is charming in it’s style and soundtrack, with a unique gameplay that let you control a melee and a mage character simultaneously. But it is no more than a nice appetizer.

Sep 18, 2025Towa And The Guardians Of The Sacred Tree is sadly a frustrating, repetitive, poorly balanced experience. It's a shame, because there is a decent amount of heart present, backdropped by beautiful designs and a stellar soundtrack. Unfortunately, the gameplay loop quickly becomes completely mindless, combat is a chore, bosses feel cheap, and your game clock counter just keeps going up while the emotions of the story never hit. There are some nice ideas here, but the execution and implementation still does not lend itself to an enjoyable Roguelite title at all.

Sep 18, 2025Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is a game with a fantastic concept that's sadly held back by factors like an unsatisfying progression system. Those who are fans of roguelikes and enjoy the character designs will still have plenty to enjoy in this title and its charming atmosphere, though, and seeing a company as large as Bandai Namco still take risks with smaller titles like this is always enjoyable in the current industry.

Sep 18, 2025As beautiful to look and listen to as it is, Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is a very Japanese take on Hades with some clever gameplay twists but fails to capture the snappiness and and immediacy that the roguelite genre requires to be actually engaging.
-
Sep 18, 2025Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree might look like it's following in Hades's footsteps, but looks can be deceiving and there’s a lot more to Brownies Inc.’s latest than a cursory glance would suggest. Stuffed with intriguing, if regularly overwhelming, ideas and demanding mechanics, Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree does enough to stand apart on its own merits.

Sep 18, 2025It's visually pleasing and fun to play in short bursts, but it's not much more than that, and since Hades II is only a week away, this doesn't feel particularly important to check out in the grand scheme of things.
