If you loved Until Dawn you will love The Quarry!

As someone who has been obsessed with the work of Supermassive Games since 2015’s Until Dawn and has continued to love them through the rocky yet still entertaining ‘The Dark Pictures Anthology’, I can honestly say this game reaches the same heights as Until Dawn and House of Ashes and, in many ways surpasses it.

The story is enthralling leaving me dying to see where it goes at every turn, the acting across the cast is phenomenal with particular kudos to the performances of Siobhan Williams as ‘Laura’, Ted Raimi as ‘Travis’, Miles Robbins as ‘Dylan’ and of course the wonderful Brenda Song as ‘Kaitlyn’. The variety of choice and effect is also a highlight, alongside the new ‘Paths’ system - this game's answer to the ‘Butterfly Effect’ - that helps to show you the impacts of your choices and is displayed to the player through delightful retro 80’s inspired VHS Movie boxes.

There is also an updated collectible system for collecting Clues which feels more connected as new information becomes available to you as you find more. The other ‘collectible’ systems are also stellar, the ‘Evidence’ system which relates to specific major clues that help to build an abundance of evidence to prove that the events that take place at Hackett’s Quarry are in fact Bizarre yet Bonafide. The last collectible system is Supermassive’s newest variation on ‘Premonitions’, which in Until Dawn were Totems dotted around the environments that foretold possible futures. In The Quarry you instead collect Tarot Cards, specifically the 22 main arcana, each one giving you a glimpse into the future. However only one Tarot Card can be viewed each chapter so it still allows some room for mystery even for the avid collectible hunter.

The other change in this game is the many differences to the ‘gameplay’ aspects of The Quarry. This includes pressing directional buttons to avoid falling whilst running from an unknown threat, mashing the - in my case - ‘X’ button to keep yourself steady whilst moving across narrow places and lifting heavy objects, pressing ‘X’ once again to ‘interrupt’ certain scenarios whether that means calling out to whatever is hiding in the woods or attacking someone or something that may or may not be trying to harm you (I’m trying my best to be as vague as possible). There are also segments where you will have a gun and be able to shoot these unknown aggressors by shining a flashlight over them and firing, just make sure to analyse your surroundings and don’t be too quick to pull the trigger cos it may end badly for you. The final aspect of gameplay and quite honestly my favourite element, is ‘Don’t Breathe’, in these segments you must hold down the ‘X’ button to hold your breathe as you hide from an attacker, watching carefully as they move around and waiting for the perfect moment to make a break for it and get the hell out of there.

In terms of game modes there is single player, which is just your regular old story, couch co-op where up to 8 players can take control of the playable characters and try to survive the night and Movie Mode, where you can select predetermined outcomes and watch them unfold without lifting a finger. There’s also an online voting mode of sorts but that is unavailable in the current build of the game.

I really enjoyed The Quarry and definitely recommend it to any fan of Until Dawn or The Dark Pictures Anthology or even just fans of the horror genre in general. It is a spectacular game filled with gore, witty banter and the occasional awkward and unnecessary tripping over a branch that we all love from classic 80s slashers.

However! The Quarry is a full price game, some would say an overpriced game which is completely understandable! As a fan of gaming and someone who is willing to pay more to support their favourite developers, I’m happy to fork over the £60+ it costs for this game but you should know what you’re getting into, this is a interactive movie game, which means that there is minimal gameplay, a lot of walking around and long ass cutscenes, if you’re not a fan of that, then don’t buy The Quarry. To those who are on the fence, I can’t say whether or not you’ll enjoy it yourself because that is the beauty of this subjective medium we call video games. I absolutely loved it but I can definitely understand your apprehension, in that case I’d recommend waiting for a sale or purchasing a physical copy which are often much cheaper. There is also a deluxe edition which adds some more content which I believe to be a little unnecessary, apart from the 80s throwback costumes which I personally love the art direction for.

I hope I’ve helped in some way to better your understanding of The Quarry.

Thanks for reading, and remember! “What Doesn’t Kill You, Will Make You Stronger!"

This game is awesome. It is a cinematic horror story with clear influences from Quantic Dreams games, full of countless branching paths diaolog options and quick time events. A lot more than I expected! I was entertained all throughout! There has been a sting of disappointing games but The Quarry does not. Graphics were good sounds and music good. Felt like you were watching a real movie and deciding what happened. Choices felt weighted with consequences as well. I like what they did with the first two character arches and then flash backed to what happened and it was playable to that was a treat! A section in and around a police station was the highlight, given its closer focus on a smaller number of characters and a tighter section of the story.

Some of the characters were annoying, (Ryan in particular), but that comes with the territory with Supermassive Games, and to be honest it's kind of part of the charm.

The ending was a real anticlimax. It ended very abruptly and there was barely any pay off from the relationships built during the game. The game hinted throughout that there would be a confrontation with police at the end, this doesn't happen. You're just rewarded with a "podcast" to listen to over the end credits. Disappointed. Did they run out of time or budget?

    A Successor to Until Dawn?

The Quarry is Supermassive Game's most recent outing into the Horror genre. This time we follow a group of camp counselors as they navigate the dangers of the night at Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp.

The game in many ways feels like a sequel and successor to Supermassive's hit game 'Until Dawn', following the formula of a group of Teenagers surviving a Horror scenario as they await the safety of sunlight to end the torments of the night.

Supermassive shows us improvements with more realistic graphics for both its characters and environments, and adds large open areas for us to explore and admire the views of virtual nature. The game also has a large amount of accessibility options that provides players of all skill levels to immerse themselves in its story, and the cast is the most diverse of all the games we've seen from Supermassive thus far.

However, the game unfortunately suffers from even more dumbed down characters that feel irrelevant after their first potential deaths, and an unsatisfactory conclusion that can make you feel like you're stuck in a Horror movie yourself. It's also worth noting that Supermassive made a lot of promises about the game that never came into fruition, which makes the game feel rushed and largely incomplete.

Its saving grace is the sheer variety in story-branching, as there are over a hundred different endings, and every character has unique scenes that depend on the previous choices you've made.

If you enjoy horror in general, this is your go-to, especially because no other decent horror games will release this year. The story is captivating, and keeps you guessing a lot, especially whether you made the correct choice in certain situations. When you choose a path, it almost always makes it very clear how the choice will be said in the dialogue, either aggressive or calm. There is no in-between, so it is very easy to always choose the “correct” choice, but is that also the best choice in that situation? I do feel like sometimes you have to get aggressive towards someone to spin the story a little. Also, a little bigger point of critique would be that some scenes look fake, for example; If you would see a character in a certain situation, it would be obvious to the eye what needs to be done, or how one would react in that situation, but the character either does something that’s totally not logical or just acts like it’s retarded so the main story line can go on the way it’s supposed to carry on. These smaller details do not damage the overall feel of the game, it’s just something I picked up on and thought could use some better finishing work.

Is it worth $70? No. Watch this game on a YouTube walkthrough (theRadBrad!) or wait for it to get a decent discount. Although it has multiple playthroughs, I do not feel the game changes its mayor plot lines so $70 feels too much.

Commendations should be given to Supermassive Games for making a horror adventure with numerous outcomes and it will entertain if you've got some buddies over or want to indulge in a horror night of your own. However, the characters are full of unlikable teenaged morons and 2015's Until Dawn is far superior to this effort.

Отличная игра. Очень скучная и затянутая в начале, но к середине набирает обороты. Бал 7 из 10, так как очен. Провисает динамике, сократить бы на 2-3 часа и вообще было бы отлично.

We have again, in classic 2022 beta style, a female lead, who is strong, and a male side kick, who is a weak fool. This propaganda constantly see, where female's are empowered and men are made fun of and portraited as weak and silly.
Multiple times, the female yells and screams at the male, but the male has to excuse and apologize, even he didn't do anything wrong. I guess that is kind of realistic, but still, it sucks being a normal man, and then play a game where a beta man apologizes for a females bad behavior.
Can we just please get past this gender-swap LGBT satanic ideologies and go back to normal times?

    ....

She is constantly yelling at him. "Go get the tools". He comes running with the tools, like a little dog, like a man-slave.... She looks at him like he is stupid. "Why didn't you bring the entire tool box".
"You just said tools" he says.... She roles her eyes. For the x1000000 time in the game.
This game, tells that men are useless, idiots, fools, weak, stupid. Even thought he just fixed a car and made it run again, he is too stupid to break a lock. So the strong independent woman breaks the lock, while the man are looking for the side.

This is no way this game wasn't written by a lgbt member, or a man hater. No way. The writer of this story has a very bad relationship with their dad and hates all men.
Why do you keep putting mentally unstable people in charge of writing stories? This is a Naughty Dog story all over again.

This disconnect detracts from the overall experience, as most arguments arise from the foolishness of the male characters, while the females consistently make wise decisions. Personally, I find some of the dialogue for the male characters to be unbearable. Perhaps it would have been more effective to have an all-female cast, as it could have heightened the pace of the game. In fact, the entire plot could have unfolded without the inclusion of male characters.

However, despite these setbacks, the actual story of the game is quite entertaining. The graphics are visually stunning, and the music adds a compelling teen horror ambiance. Regrettably, The Quarry falls short in terms of delivering on its promised horror elements, as it ultimately becomes predictable with minimal scares. While I understand that it is intended as a teen horror experience, it would have greatly benefited from a stronger emphasis on horror and less focus on teenage drama.

Regarding the ending, it can be described as passable. It neither evokes strong positive nor negative feelings. The inclusion of an unnecessary epilogue feels superfluous and could have been omitted entirely.

In summary, The Quarry boasts impressive graphics, captivating music, and solid performances. However, it falters in terms of character dialogue, decision-making, and an overly predictable ending. Considering the strengths and weaknesses of the game, I would rate it a 6.5 out of 10.

It looks amazing, the setting is great, the story is simple but effective, and the characters are surprisingly likeable. I'm so sick of the stereotypical **** girl and the brooding-but-secretly-cool guy characters but they were written and performed well enough here that it didn't bother me. It's definitely light on gameplay, but the amount of choice and consequence throughout keeps it immersive and fairly exciting, While I didn't find it particularly scary, I really appreciate that Supermassive hires real actors, which helps you to get invested in the story. It isn't the masterpiece that I think these devs are capable of, but I had a lot of fun with it and loved the whole mood and pace of the storytelling. Characters like Laura and Max, Dylan, Travis Hackett, even Abi and Ryan (who grew on me), were all great and really had me hooked on their respective narratives.

The one big downside is that I kept thinking how i just paid CAD$90 on a game that lasted 2 evenings. It would be amazing if it was a full-length, 20+ hr game that spans many days. I would totally follow the camp throughout the whole summer as a slow burn mystery starts to unfold. I imagine in the future Supermassive will go beyond the single-night story and maybe adapt a great horror book into a long, epic story where you follow characters in their lives and things slowly start to unravel and go nuts. Maybe something with a serial killer or something that doesn't rely on revealing a creature and then just fizzling out. Maybe Quantic Dream will beat them to it. Like a modern and up-to-date, not-terribly-cheesy Heavy Rain.

I love what Supermassive is doing, and this particular story should have been a home-run for me, but I can't help feeling a little disappointed after ending it. I think we'll see a masterpiece from this team, but it's not The Quarry

Innym elementem rozgrywki jest chodzenie i naciskanie 'x' w pobliżu przedmiotów, ale nawet ten aspekt szwankuje. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion this story is better than Until Dawn and the characters had potential to be better than the characters in Until Dawn, but Supermassive dropped the ball. Half of the characters you never really learn anything about after the introductory part of the game, they either get the Jessica treatment or turn into a monster no matter what you do. They say that every character has the potential to be the “main character”, but in reality it can only be 4 of them and out of those 2 you can tell who the final boy and final girl are easily. To top all of that off you don’t get ANY closure from the ending at all, just a status report on every character. Nothing to show how their relationships went, nothing to make us feel like “Awww I’m glad I kept this person alive.” Just a stupidly long podcast you have to listen to the whole way through to get the Epilogue trophy. Graphics aren’t awful most of the time, but some characters faces are far better than others. The water is literally laughable. First time I saw it I thought my TV was breaking because it was so **** bad. Literally laughable. Music was amazing in this game, I loved it so much. I loved the different clues and the evidence you had to collect and how they all related to one another. I just kind of wish there was a way for them to have hidden exactly what was going on for longer so we had to find the clues to tell us what was happening. After we find out everything it almost feels like “Well what’s the point of collecting these anymore?” Death rewind is a cool feature BUT the problem with some of the character’s deaths are that if you didn’t get some obscure easy to miss item at the VERY beginning of the game they’ll die if you don’t make the right choice. So if your favorite character dies in an encounter and you think “Oh well let me do my death rewind and pick the other option.” Nope you can die in that option too. You have to death rewind all the way back to chapter one, find that obscure easy to miss item and then they’ll live. But that’s okay, there’s another way for them to live as long as you found another kind of obscure item the previous chapter with one of the two characters that may or may not be alive. This might just be a petty complaint of mine, but I feel its still valid. And my final complaint, I wish there was a way to save the Hackettes (minus Kaylee, because I don’t think there could be a possible way to keep her alive) and to save all of the Counselors. Like the game acts like the Hackettes are the enemy, but ALL game they were trying to keep the Counselors alive until Laura’s dumbass comes in all guns a blazing and kills Kaylee. Who knows maybe Jedidiah and Bobby would’ve kept protecting them if Laura didn’t shoot Constance in the **** face. (I haven’t played through to see what happens if I don’t struggle for the gun so idk if they do or not, but I still can’t be mad at them for not doing it since Laura killed Kaylee)? It honestly felt like they were like “Ya know what? Werewolves aren’t a big enough threat, we need to make this family, who have been protecting these kids all night long, attack them in this house. Yeah that’ll be good.” It wasn’t good. I didn’t feel good about killing these people who just lost a family member and risked their lives for these stupid ass counselors all night. This game had the potential to be such a great game, much better than Until Dawn and better than the Anthology Series, but seriously. They dropped the ball hard. I originally started this review off at an 8/10, but as I wrote and continued to think about everything this game has to offer I lowered to a 6/10. Expand

-The choices are not always clear about what they will mean. A character died because of this, and it was so annoying, that he/she died not because of me but because of the game.

-The hide method is too easy, it doesn't feel stressful at all, just hold the x button.

Graphically it’s a marvel (most of the time). The general movement and facial animations are outstanding, I would say best in class. Lighting is also a technical masterpiece the way it shines on hair, skin and material is nothing short of spectacular. At some points you can question if the non-playable sections is real footage. I particularly like the use of depth-of-field which blurs the protagonist rather than medium/long distance environments. This effect is used very well and I hope more 3rd person perspective games use this or at least make the feature optional.

The voice acting and mo-cap is also stellar, although I think the writing sabotages the great work the actors and actresses have put in. What I mean by that is that the game is supposed to be survival horror, and while the acting is highly rated, the lines themselves diminish the horror element. Most characters rarely look or feel scared in relation to their current situation. In place of dialogue that would make the player more uneasy/nervous/fearful, the writers over-do clever quips, cheesy/humorous one liners or have the characters ignore horrific events with a blasé attitude. This completely destroys the tension in my opinion and results in a playthrough that just isn’t scary. Even less so on a repeated playthrough when the mystery has already been unravelled. And just to clarify, this isn’t a singular character playing the joker, it’s the majority of them. And it’s not just at the initial character building stage, it’s throughout the entire ordeal. They just don’t act like they are in any real danger and it’s atmosphere breaking.

The story itself is serviceable and does everything I suspect the makers intended. It’s not too convoluted, a bit predictable and contains the typical teen horror tropes that we expect; a Jock, Loner, Nerd, the Pretty Girl (on the outside at least). A few of which are well written and others that are completely unbelievable/un-relatable or just plain annoying (the latter kind of being a good thing in the case of a decision making game of life and death). Again, some of the characters and their actions completely suspend the immersion.

Overall I would say 7/10 based on the great technical feats that the devs have pulled off, amazing acting from the cast, but points deducted for the writing decisions which distracted me from the horror genre I expected the game to focus on.

Cheesy dialog, cringy cutscenes (A lot of them).

Uninteresting story, it drags a-lot about 4 hours and nothing happens, and the game only 8 hours long.

Every character blame everything on either the bears or the wind with no thought about it.

The butterfly effect are almost gone. whatever choices you make, it bears little to no consequences
    about it.

The game is too dark and foggy to see.

The Characters seems childish and make stupid decisions along the way.

You can only walk. there is no running mechanism.

If you finish the game and would like to go back, there is chapter select. but once you hit any chapter in the chapter select after you finish the story, the game completely overwrite everything you done up until that chapter you selected, and you cant go back to chapter select until you finish the game one more time.

There is little play game here compared to until down, which had a lot of choices.

    The ending is somewhat terrible.

like until downs totems, there is cards in which you can see the consequence of your actions. However, no matter how many you collect, you can only choose one to see per chapter.

Sometimes, the character faces looks weird up close.

The playtime between each character is distributed unevenly. sometime you will play with one character for 10 to 15 min, and then it completely changes to another character in which you play with him/her for 1 to 2 min.

The story wasn't that engaging, i had little to no care about the characters.

Sometime the characters contradict themselves which is weird.

    Pros:

    Interesting concept

The graphics is a lot better, but that should be expected.

    The monsters looks terrifying.

Multiple ending, some are interesting and some are not.

The game has ten chapters. However, the first 4 chapters nothing really important happens.

Great voice acting but cheesy and cringy dialog.

There are interesting scenes when you miss-up or when you want a character to die.
The collectables are interesting, in which its necessary to understand the back story.

The gameplay is also disappointing: You get bored to death by the super easy quick time events but get killed by the enemies in an instant because shooting is way too hard.
A good amount of decisions lead to instant death as well which is super fun and lot of the dialogue choices seem to come out of the blue. There are a ton of scenes that straight up make zero sense. For example when Kaitlyn tries to block the door with a small chair which doesn't even reach the door handle, it would only work with a doorknob anyway.

i signed up for this site just so i can rate this game. I played Until Down, an amazing game. But this quarry is a disappointment ... I bought it for € 55 and will try to sell it for € 45 as soon as possible because I think it will be worth nothing soon.
graphics 10 points, story 1. Until dawn is 100 times better game.

The "Butterfly Effect" System is also seems less punishing. Felling like no matter what you do to another character in a negative way. doesn't seem to impact any outcome differently.

    4/10

I would of liked to give it more seeing I love this Dev team. But unfortunately the impact was not there for a game changer in this particular series.

The cast is top tier, the majority of the dialogue is engaging and humorous and the plot overall kept me playing. However, this is not a horror game, it is a pick your path story with some horror tropes. A complete absence of tension and gameplay related risk (Reformatted QTEs are ridiculously easy) make for a pretty spook free experience. Expect an idle experience.

Don't buy it if you don't like horror stories with stereotipycal characters. The game isn't a game after all, there is no point in making decisions if they don't change anything... (the story isn't great either)
These games have their bases in the story with decisions to make and in the acting which is garbage honestly...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Our butts were burning so much that I've decided to create an account and leave a review on this *hm* piece.
Even though, graphics is pretty cool, the plot is an absolute disappointment. Werewolves are looking like freaking recycling of vendigos from the Until dawn.
And wtf is underneath the limits of "you can not use the mode of saving a character" in couch co-op? Are you kidding me? Why?
So, if we were playing as 1 player and were just passing the controller - it's ok, but for the couch co-op - hell no!
And of course, if you finished the game in couch co-op, you can't choose the chapter and play as a single player. I believe these magnificent limitations were designed by

Game looks amazing, there is little interaction(its more like a movie). But I can't recommend it since its a 9 hours at most game, with such a garbage ending that left me so unsatisfied I wont recommend it to anyone.

Completely unacceptable to be charging $60 for this. You're better off finding a classic CYA on sale or even the original Until Dawn instead... Expand

Worse than Until Dawn. Too many missables. No sorry devs, I don't want to replay your games a second time for collectables. You take yourself way to important if you think thats the case.
The game is pretty, but blurry af.
    Controls are very, very clunky.
    VA's are good.
    A lot of weird animations.

Alot has been removed: relationship building, butterfly effect, collectables are far less, the QTE's have been dumbed down to the point where they are just pointless and boring. Whenever someone is attacked there is alot of weird silence and lack of reaction. Scenes sometimes end very abruptly, audio repeats itself occasionally when entering a new scene. I could go on but I don't want to waste too much energy as I've already wasted too much money aswell. It just feels unfinished and quite honestly lazy, really wanted to enjoy it but one of the most disappointing games ever for me Expand

The Quarry is an unfortunate example of a title that falls flat in multiple aspects, leaving players yearning for a more engaging and immersive experience. The game struggles to deliver a compelling gaming experience and leaves much to be desired in terms of gameplay, writing, and overall execution.

One of the most glaring issues with The Quarry is its lackluster gameplay, which leaves players questioning whether it can even be classified as a true video game. The interactions are limited, and the player's agency is severely restricted, resulting in a passive and unengaging experience. The lack of meaningful gameplay mechanics or challenges contributes to a monotonous and unfulfilling journey.

Additionally, the game's difficulty level is disappointingly low, offering little to no challenge for seasoned gamers. Puzzles, if they can even be called that, are elementary at best, and most players will find themselves breezing through the game without any real sense of accomplishment. A lack of challenge can be detrimental to player engagement, as it fails to hold the player's interest and can lead to a sense of boredom and detachment.

The writing in The Quarry leaves much to be desired, as it feels amateurish and lacking in depth. The dialogue and overall narrative seem as though they were penned by a 13-year-old, lacking the maturity and nuance that are crucial for a compelling story. Characters' motivations and emotions come across as shallow and one-dimensional, making it difficult for players to connect with them on a meaningful level.

Furthermore, while the character faces may appear visually appealing at first glance, their animation and movement quickly shatter the illusion. The uncanny valley effect is evident as characters' expressions and body movements feel stiff and unnatural, detracting from the overall visual experience. This lack of attention to detail in character animation undermines the game's attempt at visual storytelling and immersion.

Adding to its lack of immersion, the choices presented in The Quarry do little to impact the overall narrative. Unlike the meaningful choices seen in games from developers like Quantic Dream, where decisions can have significant consequences on the story's outcome, The Quarry's choices seem superficial and fail to leave a lasting impact on the game's direction. This lack of consequence leaves players feeling disconnected from the experience, as their agency feels inconsequential and unimportant.

The culmination of these shortcomings ultimately leads to an anticlimactic and underwhelming ending. With no sense of accomplishment or resolution for players, the conclusion leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, leaving players questioning the time and effort invested in the game. An engaging and satisfying ending is essential to leave players with a lasting impression and a sense of fulfillment, but The Quarry fails to deliver on this front.

In conclusion, The Quarry is a disappointing and lackluster gaming experience that falls short in almost every aspect. The lack of meaningful gameplay, unimpressive writing, awkward character animations, inconsequential choices, and anticlimactic ending combine to create a tedious and unfulfilling journey. As a "videogame," it fails to deliver on the most fundamental elements that make gaming enjoyable, leaving players bored and unsatisfied. Overall, The Quarry is best left untouched, as it offers little value to those seeking a genuinely immersive and captivating gaming experience.

Holy crap this game is boring. I’m barely an hour and a half and then I’m ready to blow my brains out. The acting feels like it’s at half speed.

The Quarry does a fine job as a spiritual successor to the renowned Until Dawn, yet takes a few steps forward when it comes to character development and atmosphere building. Unfortunately, it sacrifices a few elements in the process which makes it a not so scary interactive movie more than a video game. Still, for lovers of the genre and Supermassive Games legacy – it’s a treat you should not miss.

This game, or interactive movie if you prefer, is a great experience for horror fans. The story, gameplay (minimalistic as it is) and the acting are some of the best I've seen in this genre yet. While there are some things that do break the immersion, it's still an experience for lovers of visual novels and horror fans alike.

The Quarry sits comfortably near the top of the interactive movie genre. Equal parts clever and terrifying, it earns its ten-hour runtime with a series of twists and turns that are sure to delight. There’s action, romance, comedy, and unbelievably disgusting violence. Supermassive Games have delivered a rollercoaster that serves as a fabulous follow-up to Until Dawn, so anyone who enjoys the genre will be in for one hell of a ride.
