I genuinely suck at Souls/Borne games. I was disappointed when I found out it wasn't a ninja Gaiden type hack and slash. With that said. This is a very solid souls-like game of an alternate history of the French Revolution where the demons/monsters/enemies (including your player character) are highly advanced automatons powered by intricate clockwork mechanisms and weapons. I'll come back and write more, but so far this may be one the most underrated games I have found in a while.

It has that strange disconnect between attacking the enemy and feeling it connect (think DS2). A interesting initial concept that they managed to sully with their own immature grandstanding. It wasn't needed in a game that was (again) initially different enough to be special. But once this appeared it served as a reminder how average the game is. If they just hadn't tried to put a hat on a hat then more people could've been fooled.

It's like something I've never seen before, the levels are so mazy, huge, sprawling. At first they're somewhat small and slightly linear, but as you progress through the game and unlock things like the grappling hook (which adds verticality to the levels) and progress some side quests to access side areas they become huge. The writing leaves something to be desired for sure, but I think this game has one outstanding strength that counterweighs all the shoddy stuff in it; the level design. Expand

At least the first maps are very boring "boxes", and the world seems very steril. There is not much athmosphere to dive into. I need to note here that Elden Ring and the Demons Souls remake are among my all time favorites which i played both 250 hours+. And this game is just really far away from the gaming experience the fromsoftware titles give you. The handling and animations are clumsy, the hitboxes and weaponranges are hard to spot. In general the animations and gameplay are the major issue that makes the fights challenging and not the mechanics, like it should be. I really dont want to hate on this game, actually it is better than most of those "soul-like" clones and if you are really into this kind of games, it might be a good game for you. But it just doesnt soak you in or motivates you with a tight atmosphere and really challenging and versatile fights. Expand

The variety of enemies and weapons was nice, many different playstyles could be utilised. The lore and world building were pretty in depth and engaging for the most part, though a lot was delivered through groups of characters just standing around and talking.

Interesting and refreshing concept, but the mechanics needed to be tightened and the difficulty increased.

Level design is also very interesting, because again it may not be as good as From games, but it has Metroidvania mechanics that make you go back exploring to unlock new areas and secrets.
Some areas might look "empty", and sometimes confusing to travel at first, but in general there are a lot of shortcuts and secret passages that will help you.
CS is always good, the stun mechanic really gives you a huge advantage against most enemies and bosses, and weapons are different and fun to play.
NG+ is very good because it adds new enemies (mostly different element based and reskins), weapons, and even lv. 4 modules, love this, and it was helpful while doing a 2nd for the platinum.
DLC is also good, new huge area with more new enemies (three new this time), weapons, modules, and a boss.

During the first 5 hours I thought it was a great game. The combat was good, the animation of attacks was beautiful, and the map was complex. 9/10.

At the 15th hour, the setting began to work against the video game, since all the environments were identical, urban biomes of the illustrated Europe repeated over and over again; monotonous, understandable but monotonous. At the same time, the story was weak, and the combat became repetitive. 6/10.

I take away one point for cutting out an entire area of the final product and selling it separately (700kb for 15€, literally just opening a door to a map that you have already downloaded). The fact that it is a frequent practice does not make it respectable. 5/10

Finally, after 25 hours and probably in the last map (Bastille) I fell off a wall and plunged into an infinite fall through the ground. I went back to the menu, re-entered the game, and the autosave put me back in the infinite fall; there is no more save files and it didn't even allow me to teleport back to the checkpoint. Game over. 2/10.

I have played souls-like games with less budget and at the same time are more interesting, more enjoyable, and have more personality (Code Vein, Hellpoint, Let It Die). Steelrising may seem good at first, but it lacks soul, identity, and ends up feeling generic af. There are games in the same genre with much less visibility and much cheaper that deserve attention. I would never recommend Steelrising to a souls-like genre fan when there are so many superior options available.

I hope that if someone reads this it will be useful to them.

Set in France during the time of the Revolution, but with clockwork and alchemy thrown in, Steelrising looks fun right from the start. The clockwork automats you're fighting are great- looking and becoming more and more aggressive the further into the game you proceed. Combat, however, begins to be a bit stale after a while. You hit them once or twice and dodge, that's mostly what you'll be doing. The stamina meter is once again present, because why do something else than Dark Souls, but there's a twist that with a well- timed button press, you're back to full immediately, which is a nice addition.
Most of the levels look really good, although the city parts do feel very alike. What's worse, the game is VERY linear for such big maps. You go where the devs want you to go, in that order, and nowhere else. Want to backtrack to a previous place? You can't, you need a kick or a grappling hook now. You got the grappling hook and a mid-air dash? Wonderful, it's exploring time, you might think. But nope! More than once, I managed to jump on a big gate leading to a new area, with enemies clearly visible, but was stopped by an invisible wall because I didn't follow the dev- approved path. This actually happened so many times that it completely ruined the fun for me. Again: why make such huge maps if you can't explore? Why put a carriage right next to a wall and then stop players from trying to jump up on it and see what's on the other side? The game is still, after so many months, a buggy mess. Once, I even managed to jump over a fence (I know! I was surprised too!) and I returned after a bit because it was very obvious this was the end of a rather long side-quest that I had just begun, so I opted to play it in order to not make the game crash. Usually, a gate magically opens in a place you've been 20 times before because sidequest, but this was yet another oversight. I also got stuck quite a few times in a sliding animation where there shouldn't have been one so I had to restart the game. again. Fortunately, the autosaves are a-plenty and I never lost more than 5 minutes. Still, it was aggravating. Almost as much as Aegis being able to kick down a stone wall (after unlocking that) but still being hampered by a few thin wooden boards that block your way. Better look for that dev- approved path again!
Even worse, the game feels not entirely finished. I got stuck on a pebble, and even on a flat surface, I hit enemies through the floor or solid wall, and I even fell through the floor myself once or twice! Is this 2008 again?? In some places, rubble or even a whole house is floating a few centimeters of the ground as well (just look after you beat a cavalry boss). Also, most of the NPC's look really alike, even in the many cutscenes. Oh, and speaking of looking alike: when you're halfway through the game, you have seen all enemies, save from some bosses. No new ones are going to be there, it'll be all the same ones, but sometimes with a new alchemical element, which is a shame.
Because the enemies do look great, with a speical chef's kiss to the bosses. They look absolutely magnificent and imposing, with the Executioner taking top place. It's a shame they're defeated so easily, because the bosses were where I had the most fun, combat-wise. Seriously, use the frost gun and/or some petrification grenades and every single boss fight is a breeze.
I should also mention that the various weapons, in stark contrast to one useless armour set after another, are immense fun to try out. You have your heavy halberds, chains, batons, guns, fans, twin swords,... And all of them are really fun to experiment with and change. You'll be a bit stuck with the same ones for a while though, because the linear game doesn't want you upgrading too much up until the very end.
I should also mention that story-wise, the game is at least very good. You will have quite a few conversations with NPC's you managed to find or rescue, and politics will start to happen, in a fun way. Sometimes, you will even have to make choinces that impact which ending you'll get. It's not a huge deal, but it was fun to ponder what the people were going through, and how their would- be saviours are definitely not an easy black or white when it comes to morality.

So, in the end, I would put this game under the "a good try" category. The story, NOPC and weapons are well done, but it's way too linear, there's WAY too many bugs and glitches, it's far too linear and combat gets very repetitive after a while. I finished it but wasn't even interested in playing the DLC anymore.

Steelrising is a good soulslike game, with a very wide range of weapons, fun combat, and great exploration. However, it lacks in the technical aspect, which disappoints a little due to the lack of care and brings some graphical problems, frame drops and crashes.

For a first foray into a new type of action game, Steelrising is an okay attempt. The skeleton of a good game is there, but all of its aspects need various levels of tweaking to get the recipe just right. Some things like combat just need a fine tune to be more reactive and smoother. Others like the level design need a firmer foundation to allow for more engaging and palatable exploration. It’s far from the worst game and won’t eat up too much time, but it’s not the most solid entry into the genre.

While lacklustre in some areas, Spiders leverages Steelrising’s daft premise for a 8 wonderful action adventure in a Paris steeped in history and robotics. [Issue#20, p.66]
