Oct 9, 2024For players of the original, this should get a steady nostalgia drip going. But coming to this series fresh makes for an overlong, dated and tedious experience.

Oct 29, 2024The level design and combat have improved a lot. There have been missed opportunities to improve the weakest moments of the original and in the narrative, although there are few changes and they are subtle details, some scenes lose strength while others are reinforced. All in all, Bloober knows how to maintain the tension and has earned his place to continue working in the franchise.[Recommended]

Oct 3, 2024It’s an interesting time to revisit Silent Hill 2, considering the original has been in an abandonware state for years now, and the only remastered version available isn’t great. In the official sense, the remake is the current retelling of the story. It’s a faithful interpretation of the events that transpired, capturing most of the big and small story moments while fleshing out some details in between. When considering the legacy of the original game over the past 23 years, however, it’s hard to imagine the Silent Hill 2 remake will be able to replicate that as well, for fans to spend decades discussing its new endings and narrative additions with contrarian analyses. At the very least, it’ll make for another figment to theorize about.

Nov 7, 2024Silent Hill 2 came from a time when video game narrative was far less settled. Silent Hill 2 didn’t know it was a classic; its team was just trying to make something meaningful. And while it has many obvious inspirations, it synthesizes them instead of merely recreating them. It is something all too rare in video games: something entirely its own. Since Resident Evil 4 and Naughty Dog, a narrative-driven AAA game has come to mean a narrow set of things. Silent Hill 2 is a game with many ideas, but its remake has essentially just one: reconfiguring the original game into the 3D action mode of other horror remakes. Playing Silent Hill 2 is a reminder that video games can do everything. Its remake is a beleaguered, crafted, tepid example of what they’ve found themselves stuck doing instead.
