This game has creeped me out no end. It’s scary as hell with a properly spooky atmosphere that will really pull you in. And if that’s what you’re looking for this Halloween, I’d thoroughly recommend you give it a go... If you dare!

Simply put, Silent Hill 2 is a complete horror masterpiece. It is a superb thought-provoking story that hit closer to home than I had expected and it is propelled by a new combat system that really helps create the feeling of desperation. Sublime graphics, haunting environment design and truly chilling sound design and score help make this the quintessential horror game. I have never loved horror. But I truly love this game.

Silent Hill 2 Remake sets a new golden standard when it comes to remakes. The story is carried over completely intact, honoring the original narrative while adding depth where appropriate. I absolutely loved exploring the expansive, redesigned environments, which are more immersive and atmospheric than ever before. Bloober Team has exceeded expectations by creating a version that maintains the game's legacy and takes it to new heights. Those are indeed love letters in their own right. But I am now convinced that absolutely no one on the planet loves any video game more than the entire team at Bloober Team loves Silent Hill 2. The amount of analysis that must have gone into understanding every minute detail of the original, and then the loving devotion and commitment to capturing all of it to bring it into modernity unspoiled has made this a uniquely passion project. Boiled down, there’s almost none of Bloober Team that is actually in this game, and yet Bloober Team’s poured everything they had into it. That is nothing short of total reverence to a masterpiece.

Silent Hill 2 effortlessly ranks alongside the greatest horror games of all time and is an absolute must-play. Congratulations Bloober, you nailed it.

I cannot recommend this enough to fans of the series and anybody new curious about jumping into Silent Hill as a series for the first time with this remake of Silent Hill 2. This is an absolute must play for 2024.

Since Silent Hill 2's epic and crazy journey starts because of a letter, it's fitting to say that this remake is a love letter. Not only to the OG masterpiece fans, but also to the genre. It feels fresher, smoother and more intense than ever. Great visuals, better gameplay (both in combats and puzzles) and the classic story everyone knows about. This is exactly what we always wanted in our restless dreams. To come back to this town.

That being said, enough of rough edges remain that could put some players off – ironically the same rough edges that make it so successful for me. These echoes of some of the less positive aspects of the original game, as well as some performance issues on console, are the only negatives in a game that more than does service to the legacy of Silent Hill.

At the same time, Bloober keeps the spirit of everything that made Silent Hill 2 a classic, but also accentuates it in smart and reasonable ways. It feels sickeningly intense to fight creatures, it feels menacing and foreboding to explore the town’s foggy streets, and the characters actually feel concerned and responsive to the things happening around them. I never thought we’d see the day when Silent Hill 2 would get such a shine, but here we are, and it is gloriously terrifying.

We cannot deny that Bloober surprises us; The result has been very good and I am happy to say that Silent Hill is back and again we will be back in that place that will feed our worst nightmares.

Not to mention, the game expands on the original in almost every way possible. The gameplay loop, however, is simple compared to other games like Resident Evil, and this may lead to a feel of repetition as the adventure goes on.

Diving back into this Silent Hill 2 completely rebuilt by Konami is like returning to a childhood village dear to our hearts decades later, or coming across a fiery declaration written by a person with whom ties have been broken... everything is there as in memories, but everything is different too. James Sunderland is back, accompanied by his eternal demons. If our hero has doubts about the necessity of his coming to the heart of the cursed city, we no longer have any: this trying journey is a dream for fans, as much as it will be a nightmare for others. Within this striking story of which we are the Eros (and Thanatos), the infernal round trips to the confines of darkness - even more numerous than in 2001 - will leave tourists on the side of the road. Bloober Team has written a love letter primarily to Silent Hill 2 fans. A letter at least as powerful as the one addressed to survival horror fans 23 years earlier, written by Team Silent.

Silent Hill 2 is still that video game capable of disturbing and captivating every kind of person, thanks to its moral ambiguities, tragic love story, and exploration of the depths of the human soul. Bloober Team has managed to craft a work that remains faithful to the original, expanding and layering the experience, offering a modern take on the myth while drawing from the same sources of inspiration that guided Team Silent twenty years ago. The ancient, sensual, dark magic that permeated James Sunderland’s journey through hell is still powerful. From here, if Konami has the courage to keep its promise, the series can be reborn.

Sent to the stake before it could even justify its communication blunders, Silent Hill 2 Remake has now had its revenge. Not only has Bloober Team delivered a modern reinterpretation of Masashi Tsuboyama's game with this remake, but the Polish studio has also managed to capture the very essence of what it represented, namely an agonizing and anxiety-provoking dive into the tortured and painful mind of James Sunderland. The themes addressed have an even stronger resonance today, since it deals with domestic violence, toxicity, child abuse and even suicide. Not everything is perfect, mind you, and we would have liked more up-to-date animations, a more flexible combat system too, and perhaps a more marked character design, but the incredible atmosphere that emerges from the game manages to make us forget these technical errors.

Bloober Team delivers us a remake of excellent quality that nevertheless brings with it some elements that are not entirely convincing. Fans of the series will appreciate the faithfulness to the original material and the fact that this blends well with the few but evident changes in terms of gameplay. Unfortunately for Silent Hill 2, in 25 years of fog under the bridge, a lot has passed and in town for some time there has been a new sheriff called Alan Wake 2, who has shaken up the horror genre, becoming the new benchmark.

Ultimately, the Silent Hill 2 remake has managed to dispel any doubts we had in our hearts, delivering a product that is respectful of the original and capable of preserving its powerful message. Today, like twenty years ago, we are in the presence of a work capable of crossing the boundaries of the traditional narrative of the medium, touching delicate chords in the souls of the spectators while an unprecedented horror unfolds inexorably before their eyes. If you are a fan of the genre, you have no excuses. The city is waiting for you.

Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 Remake is an interesting game. It successfully freshens up the presentation of the original story while tastefully expanding the gameplay through a modern gaming frame. Their handling of boss fights, monster behaviours and puzzles makes this title a fun time through and through, despite the depressing nature of the atmosphere and story. The new takes on characters offer increased depth through new facial capture and the voice actors successfully revise some of the more complex, awkward dialogue exchanges in a manner befitting of the original title. Akira Yamoaka slays with a fantastic remix of the soundtrack and Ito does some masterful redesigning of the horrific creatures. If there was a way to remake Silent Hill 2 this was it.

The story in Silent Hill 2 is rock solid, which is partly due to the excellent voice-acting. The revamped boss fights, soundtrack and visual presentation are also excellent. In that respect, the remake is more than successful, although we must point out that the combat can become somewhat repetitive due to the much longer duration of the game, and the resolution and frame rate are not stable either. Some points to consider, but otherwise Bloober Team does an excellent job here.

Silent Hill 2 is the rare game that isn't over after we've finished playing. It's a state of mind, and it waits for us to return. [Issue#404, p.108]

Bloober promised a “safe” remake that respected the legacy of Silent Hill 2, and they’ve delivered a game that takes its iconic horror to new places, without unnecessary baggage or cheap shocks. Instead, their version of Silent Hill 2 is stretched to expand on the dread while the nightmarish town has never looked more beautifully terrifying. It’s a terrifyingly faithful reimagining that’ll scare veterans and newcomers alike.

This Silent Hill 2 is more beautiful and bigger than ever- And those are just two of the problems with this fantastic remake. What can I say, it's complicated.

Overall, I think Silent Hill 2 feels more like a side-upgrade than a full upgrade to the original. It's incredibly faithful and respectful while it modernizes large chunks of the game, but some of those modernizations go a tad too far for my taste. Silent Hill 2 is largely successful at what it is trying to do, which is to present a version of the game that is more polished and modern. It doesn't eclipse the original version, but for anyone who didn't grow up playing PS2 games, this is the easiest version of the game to play.

Bloober Team found the balance between innovation and respect for the original work. What made Silent Hill 2 an unforgettable title is still there. However, horror is a gimmicky genre, of emotions and impacts, and repetition is its greatest enemy. Because if the scares are repeated, they are no longer scary, but frustrating. Silent Hill 2 Remake has the same pacing flaws as The Evil Within or Silent Hill: Downpour: it's a satisfying game that sees us reach the credits with a good taste in our mouths, but when we recap, the overall experience deflates more than once.

It might not have you sold in the first few hours, but stick it out until Brookhaven Hospital and you’re in for a white-knuckle ride straight into Hell.

Silent Hill 2 Remake turns out to be a surprisingly conservative and safe game that neither revolutionizes the original nor desecrates it. The changes it brings are primarily due to the benefits of modern technology. The modifications and innovations that Bloober Team has indulged in are a bit timid, but they would not be possible without a thorough understanding of the original and what made it a legend. And that is no easy task.

Silent Hill 2 is a great way to visit – or revisit – one of the most dread-inducing destinations in the history of survival horror.

It stays faithful to the original (to a fault at times) but breathes enough new life into it to simultaneously ensure that long-time fans will appreciate the respect shown, while newcomers won't find it antiquated.

While it may be an unnecessary project, Silent Hill 2’s remake keeps the original’s haunting essence intact by staying true to its unsettling atmosphere, off-kilter tone, and uncomfortable moments. It’s a respectful revisit that only veers off course when it tries a little too hard to add pounds onto a sleek horror game. Even with some extra weight, the tortured story told here is every bit as harrowing as it was in 2001.

In faithfully recreating the original game while providing new surprises for returning players, [Silent Hill 2] justifies not only its own existence, but also the viability of a large-scale Silent Hill revival.

All things considered? Silent Hill 2 Remake is an almost excellent game that just couldn’t help itself. It does so much to impress, but the obnoxious elements are so consistent they ensure Team Silent’s masterpiece is far from bested...I never want to see another Mannequin again in my life.

It’s hard to dismiss the value of this remake when it created in me this new understanding of this cherished, 23-year-old story. It’s my appreciation for the original title that painted this newer perception. The onus is on Konami to make the original, and the rest of this series, more widely available so others can see the full context. Meanwhile, I hope Bloober Team’s success builds a bridge for a new audience to experience the still-inimitable original title. Maybe they needed this shift in perspective.

Some restraint when it came to the length of the remake would have done wonders. But aside from the needless bloat and technical problems, there’s still a lot to like. Remaking Silent Hill 2 could have gone horribly wrong, and maybe this modernization won’t replace the original for some, but it’s at least a worthwhile new perspective.

The remake of Silent Hill 2 is a small step for the players, but a big leap for Bloober Team. Those familiar with the original will undoubtedly ask themselves more than once whether the Polish creators have definitely gone the right way, but no horror fan can pass by this title indifferently.

However you approach it, Silent Hill 2 is an atmospheric and rewarding horror game up there with the Resident Evil remakes for reinventing a classic. While its strict adherence to the past can feel a little constrained at times, and a few things are lacking as a result, it nails the feel of the original well. Despite a scattering of minor issues, any negativity comes more from a place of believing the new Silent Hill 2 Remake could have been better, than it actually being bad. The whole thing ultimately delivers and does a good job of making the series feel meaningful and relevant in a way it hasn't for years.

Much like James Sunderland, we have returned to Silent Hill, but what was once our special place has changed. Thankfully, enough of what made it special remains and will likely warm the cockles of nostalgic fan hearts and newcomers alike, even if you’ll have to look past some of the garish new additions in the process.

It's been a great pleasure for me personally to experience one of the modern classics that are considered seminal to the conventions of the genre, and I have to applaud much of Bloober Team's work here. That doesn't change the fact that there are aspects of Silent Hill 2's foundation that appear slightly shaky to me, and your immersion and enjoyment will be dictated by how forgiving you are of a story that becomes a little too thin as the game progresses.

Unlike Resident Evil, Silent Hill 2 is sparing with scenes of pure horror, save for the infrequent encounters with unkillable nemesis Pyramid Head. He comes at you every so often with a giant blade, his metal mask shielding him from your bullets until he decides to go away again for no apparent reason. Less is more – in terms of visual style and tension-building – can be effective but the long periods of nothing dramatic happening in drab locations border on monotony. And that’s the last thing you want in a scare-em-up.

Those who loved the original will immensely enjoy stepping back into this dead town. But modern gamers who have no association with the history could likely find it a bit bland compared to today’s more speedy, interactive games.

As a regular representative of the genre the new Silent Hill 2 is quite good, and should deliver lots of fun to gamers that like this kind of games. But as a remake of one of the most important horror games in history this new version looks extremely mediocre, which in my eyes is a greater crime than making a simply bad game.
