As much as I’d love to give it a perfect 100, Civilization VII isn’t quite the full evolution of the Civ formula it was hyped up to be. Don’t get me wrong—it’s still a fantastic game, just not as refined or complete as it ought to have been, with some oddly incomplete systems and uneven pacing. But if you can look past that? Then, sure—this might just be the perfect 4X experience you’ve been waiting for.

With some slip-ups in terms of pacing and shallow unit management, Sid Meier's Civilization VII brings innovations that benefit the agility of actions and the customization of the experience based on compositions between eras and leaders. And with solid mechanics and neat visuals, it continues to be the greatest reference of the 4X genre of this generation.

Staying fresh and relevant is no easy feat—even for a giant like Civilization. The seventh entry in the legendary series, born from the visionary mind of Sid Meier, reshuffles the deck of its historic gameplay, presenting itself as a well-crafted, engaging title, albeit in a more streamlined form. Some hallmark features of past Civ games disappear, new ones emerge, and others are reimagined. Yet, Civilization VII remains a high-quality strategy experience, highly recommended for fans of the genre—though certain elements could have been refined further. It may not be an undisputed masterpiece, but it is undoubtedly a deep and rewarding game, challenging players across a journey as vast as human history itself. The question may be: is Civilization VIII better or worse than its predecessors? The question is irrelevant, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is simply different and offers a fresh take on one of gaming’s most beloved franchises.

If you're a new player looking for your next strategy game fix, you definitely can't go wrong with Sid Meier's Civilization VII. However, other than the ages system, I'm hard-pressed to think of what I'm excited about in this new entry when I could just play the previous installment.

Civilization VII dares to experiment and change its well-established foundations to offer a different gameplay experience based on managing crises and changing eras. The game certainly has its flaws to be corrected, but it's well on its way, thanks to its new approach.

Civilization 7 lays a solid foundation with its addictive gameplay and rich content but feels incomplete without key historical figures and a post-space race era. While expansions will likely refine the experience, the base game still delivers that classic "one more turn" appeal.

Sid Meier's Civilization VII brings innovative changes to the franchise, with civilizations evolving through three eras and leaders no longer tied to a single nation. Victory conditions have been reworked, removing the religious victory. Despite graphical improvements and strategic flexibility, the game may feel less deep than its predecessor and has minor issues on PS5.

Bold changes in direction and mechanics culminate in a mixed result for Sid Meier's Civilization VII. The thrill of outwitting your opponents and seeing your chosen society thrive is alive and kicking, but the fragmented nature of the ages mechanic and issues with non-military paths to success undermine the foundation of this societal evolution.

Despite its UI issues and missing features, Civ VII is still an enjoyable and addictive experience. Its new mechanics provide a fresh foundation which will no doubt be expanded on over the coming years with more content. If they can get over the substantial formula changes, hardcore fans of the series are more likely to be forgiving of the game’s shortcomings and probably won’t regret their purchase, but more casual players may want to sit tight until the title has been patched and padded out with more content for a more complete experience.

Civilization VII feels like an Early Access title with a premium price tag. Its foundations are solid as ever, and it's still fun to play. But there are fewer reasons than before to jump ship into the latest chapter of the illustrious series, especially as Civ VI is around. Give it a year, and we'll talk again.
